Currently using AirPort Extreme but it has issues

I use an iMac running Lion.  About 3-4 days ago the AirPort Extreme was blinking yellow .. I looked at cable modem and it was fine .. so I went to Utilities, clicked the AirPort icon and it said I needed an update.  Everything worked well but then I got the yellow light again .. after clicking into AirPort icon and finding nothing amiss I looked at the AirPort 'box' itself and the light was back to green.  Is this a signal that the AirPort Extreme is dying?  Do I get another Extreme or go for the Express?  Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the status light is staying a steady green, then it would be operating normally. If it continues to randomly flash yellow, with no errors being reported, then you may want to look at the base station logs to see what it "sees" are the issues that are causing it.
To get to these logs: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logging & Statistics tab > Logging and Statistics > Logs tab

  • I currently use Airport Extreme Wanting to extend using another apple airport express

How to set up Airport Express when already using Airport Extreme to extend range.

Extending the range of an 802.11n network
AirPort Utility makes it simple to extend the range of an 802.11n network if you are connecting another 802.11n base station. Connecting two 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations greatly simplifies the WDS setup process.
To extend the range of an 802.11n network:
Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the network name and wireless password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Error 9672 when trying to print using airport extreme

I have just purchased a new imac running os x 10.5.1 and an airport extreme base station. I have a canon pixma mp530 printer and have on occasions successfully printed using the printer with the airport extreme but it has been inconsistent and I have never been able to locate the printer drivers in the utilities folder. So I thought I would download the latest drivers located in the canon website claiming that they were os x 10.5.1 compatible. Now I am unable to add the printer to my printer list in the finder as I get a 9672 error message and my screen freezes and I still have no printer in the utility folder. I have a ibook running tiger and the printer when connected to both the ibook and the imac using a firewire works perfectly. Has anyone else had these problems using a printer wirelessly or is there something I am missing. The internet works with base station with no problems.

Despite being a total newbie, I good the damned thing to work--At least for now.
I first unplugged the airport and then the printer. Plugged them both back in and then went to Canon's site to redownload the drivers. Restarted the Macbook pro and to my astonishment it worked. Again, at least for now.....

  • Setting upp a used Airport extreme

    Hey
Just got myself a used airport extreme, but cant seem to figure out how to set it up. I downloaded the Airport utilities 6.1 for OS X Lion, but the app cant find it. tried using the reset button, without any results. I would also like to dual plug it to my excisting router, which im pretty sure is a posibility. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
if its any help, here is my Ethernet ID on the airport extreme: 0024369F 15BS

Reset it with a "hard reset":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Download and install AirPort Utility if you do not already have it:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
    Tiger: AirPort Utility 5.3.2
    Panther: AirPort 4.2
There is a Windows version also.
Launch AirPort Utility. It will lead you step by step.

  • I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes does this occur with the new extreme?

I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes. Does this occur with the newer version?

    1)  If the reception comes and goes as a result of wireless interference from other sources in your home and around the home...other wireless networks in the neighborhood....or...nearby cordless phones.....then a new router is likely to experience the same issues. See this Apple support document for symptoms and fixes of wireless interference.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
    2) If the reception comes and goes as a result of an aging power supply in the older AirPort Exteme or another component that is intermittently acting up, then a new router should take care of that.
What we cannot tell you is whether 1) or 2) applies to your situation.  If possible, it would be good idea to take the older AirPort to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

  • I am trying to hook up my Airport Express to my current network and AirPort Extreme but keep getting the same error message: "This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information."

I am trying to hook up my Airport Express to my current network and AirPort Extreme but keep getting the same error message: "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." Any thoughts?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

  • HT1998 My iPAD can use the internet through my airport extreme, but the airport utility does not see it so I can't create a guest password.  What am I doing wrong?

My iPAD can use the internet through my Airport Extreme, but the Airport Utility does not see the device so I can't set a guest password.

If your Mac is using the Lion operating system with recent updates, it will be necessary to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Select the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Remove the check mark next to Create a closed network
Click Done, then click Update to save the new settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart

Just spoke with Cisco about the router.  They said the router is compatible with the E1500.  They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1).  They told me I would have to change it if that was the case.  How would I do that?

What sort of Internet connection do you have and who is your Internet Service Provider?
What is the make and model number of your modem?

  • Slow download on Airport Extreme but all other systems go

Over the last year I have replaced previous laptops with intel MacBooks. Our D-Link g wasn't cutting it so I just purchased an Airport Extreme. It connects to my ISP via DSL through an ethernet connection to a Quicksilver running Tiger (AE is refurbished and compatible with Tiger). Wireless printing, wifi connection is strong but downloading pages is slow at times. Sometimes both the intel MacBook pros produce a message "you are not connected to the internet" while I clearly see that the connection is strong - it appears that it is a delay in the MacBook Pro recognizing that it is on line is the issue as it does then reload showing on line. It is a dual band and my cordless phone is 5 Mhz - don't know if this matters. Oddly if using my previous D-Link g, while connections dropped or was poor and wireless printing was completely inconsistent, when it indicated that the connection was was strong downloading was pretty efficient. Any ideas?
    Annexit

Just to clarify something... The current model AirPort Extreme is compatible with Tiger (and Panther and Windows and Linux and even Mac OS 9). The only thing that requires Leopard (Tiger for your refurb model) or later is the administration of the base station. That is, running AirPort Utility to set it up. Once it is set up, you can connect to it with any device that uses the standard wired and wireless protocols.
Just to confirm the cause is related to the wireless, try connecting one of your MacBooks with an Ethernet cable. If it works smoothly with a wired connection, then the problem is most likely related to the wireless connection. If the problem recurs with a wired connection, then the cause may be something else, such as network settings.
If you establish that the problem only recurs with wireless, run AirPort Utility and adjust the +Radio Mode+ setting to see if has any effect. My model is older, so I don't know what options are available. If all of your devices are 802.11n (with no g or b), you can try a setting that excludes non-n devices (if there is such as setting). You can try using a specific channel, instead of Automatic.
If you think the cordless phone is interfering, try turning it off temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • Green light on Airport Extreme but will not connect to internet

I have tried restarting computer and Airport Extreme but it will not connect to internet.  Unit has been working great up until now.  I have made no changes in system.
This Airport/time machine is 2009 version.

The Cisco DPC 3010 is a cable modem, so you will need to let the modem completely reset before you connect it to the AirPort Extreme.
It may be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and reconfigure it, but we will try a shortcut first to see if that can be avoided.
Power off the entire network.....all devices....modem, AirPort, computers, mobile devices, etc in any order that you want.
Be sure to disconnect the power cable on the modem, either on the back of the device or pull the power cord from the wall AC jack
Leave everything powered off for at least 30 minutes.  Longer is better, as it sometimes takes the equipment back at the ISP longer to completely reset and issue a new fresh IP address to the modem.
After the wait period, power up the modem first, and let it run for at least 5 minutes by itself. If your modem documentation states that the modem should be powered up for 15 minutes, then go with 15.
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a few minutes
Then power up other devices one at a time about a minute apart
When the entire network is back up, check the network.
It this does not work, you will have to start over again as above, except this time you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme.
To do that, power off the AirPort Exterme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme.....and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Power off the AirPort now, and start it back up in the proper sequence
If things still don't work, then you likely have a defective AirPort Extreme that will need to be replaced.

The first important thing to consider here is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, so that may likely have something to do with your difficulties.
If you want to continue to try this, the drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a drive at the port of the Extreme...even if the hard drive has its own power supply....because the port on the Extreme is under powered.
Most users who try this unsupported method have corruption difficulties sooner or later, but we do hear from some users who seem to be able to make it work.
The bottom line is that there is no support from Apple on this if you have difficulties, so you may want to consider a secondary backup plan for your important data.

  • Used Airport Extreme Show Old Location

I bought a used Airport Extreme 802.11ac on eBay. Now using any location services on Safari or Apple Maps shows me at the location of the seller. I have tried going into Skyhook and giving them its MAC address and my correct log/lat, but it has not helped. They say it should take effect immediately in most cases, but so far it has had no efffect.
Our iPhones pick up the correct location, so I have tried connecting my MacBook, and iPads to an iPhone's personal hotspot and also tried leaving both of our iPhones running both Apple and Google maps all day, and again this has not helped.
Is it just going to take a very long time for the databases that have that used Airport's MAC listed at the old location to finally pick up the new one?
Thanks for any and all advice.

Well, after waiting 4+ weeks I called Apple Support. (Luckily the Airport Extreme I bought on eBay was new/open box and with my dated proof of purchase Apple let me register it for the remaining warranty period. I mislabeled the original question as Used) A really helpful support person (like nearly every one at Apple I had encountered) worked with me.
We reset it again to factory settings, checked that my ISP provided Arris cable/WIFI router 's network showed my correct location (which it did) without the Airport connected,  then reconnected the Airport Extreme. But as soon as we reconnected it, both the Arris and Airport WIFI networks showed me back in the completely incorrect location. My support person consulted with another and they concluded that they needed to swap it out for a replacement, that this was not normal behavior after a reset to factory specs.
The replacement arrived today, and after setup immediately reported my correct location.
