Cursor focus in text fields in Safari broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

Hi, I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook. Since then, whenever I am typing in a text field in Safari (e.g. Gmail's compose message contents field), the cursor freezes. I cannot move the cursor with either arrow keys or the mouse. I cannot select text. The only way to move the cursor is to click on a different text field (e.g. the email subject field in Gmail) and then click back on the location I want in the first text field. But even after that, I cannot move the cursor within that field aside from typing characters -- I still have to click back and forth between different text fields.
I have not had this problem in Firefox.
This seems like a minor thing but it makes Gmail unusable in Safari, which basically means Safari is useless to me now. Still, I prefer to use Safari for general web browsing since it is much quicker, so I am hoping someone can recommend a fix (preferably not going back to Leopard, although that is an option via a SuperDuper restore).

HI,
Other Safari users have experienced this issue but the issue resolved itself after uninstalling the Flash player plugin, then reinstalling, then repairing permissions.
Go here and follow the instructions. Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • PS3 and Safari crashes after Snow Leopard upgrade

How is everyone enjoying the crashes after their Snow Leopard upgrade? I can't save a photo using PS3, or download a photo to flickr or facebook without a crash. PS3 crashes, Safari crashes and work flow is at a crawl? Spoke with tech yesterday and they told me that this would stop if I downloaded Snow Leopard again, which I did, but the problem wasn't resolved. To top it off, I lost permissions on the iMac and can't use the computer. Please tell me where all of the accolades came from? Were the reviews done by people who actually work on their computers or by people who play on them? Oh, and another thing, lost my wireless access to the router and had to start all over. Be careful here, this has not been fun!

Excuse me, I meant to write CS3 instead of PS3.

  • ARD Viewing broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi all!
Most of our Snow Leopard installs went fine, however, one Mac mini is still being troublesome. It's a Core Duo Mac mini connected via Ethernet. Viewing or Controlling the computer from ARD console gives a black screen. Console.app on the client computer reports that AppleVNCServer crashes (see attached log).
I've repaired permissions multiple times and reinstalled ARD client several times. Remote controlling via a simpler VNC client works when ARD is set to accept VNC connections on the client.
    +sudo lsof -i :5900+ produces the following:
    $ sudo lsof -i :5900
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    AppleVNCS 403 wildam 10u IPv6 0x03a921f0 0t0 TCP *:vnc-server (LISTEN)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

Update: After having to re-explain the entire case because the last guy didn't write anything down, and after having to re-convince the 2nd level support guy that this is in fact a bug, I've got the case escalated to engineering, and they'll come back to me on wednesday next week (I can't, of course, speak directly to the engineer).
The problem presents itself with a fresh install of 10.6 and ARD Client 3.3.1 with a resolution of 1366x768. Symptoms are a black screen in the ARD console, with the text "Connecting…" flashing on the screen. The process AppleVNCServer crashes on the client at this time, see report over.
    I'll keep you all updated!

  • MathType integration broken after Snow Leopard Upgrade

MathType 6.0 no longer seems to work with Keynote after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to insert an equation from MathType it inserts the equation, but only as a HUGE image file that has to be resized. Worse, I can no longer edit equations in MathType once they have been inserted into Keynote. Even if I select and copy in Keynote and paste into MathType. Everything still works correctly on my machine that I haven't installed Snow Leopard on.
It's a big problem for me because my presentations use a lot of equations. Any ideas for a cure?

    Quit Keynote
    move the preferences file:
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote. plist
    on the desktop
    restart Keynote.
Maybe you will be forced to re-link MathType.
Tell us if it restores a normal behavior.

I was using this script in illustrator cs4 on a mac running 10.5 and all was good

I'm running an intel iMac, so perhaps it's something to do with that.

    tell application "Finder"
    try
set C to container of (newerPath)

    end tell
    end if
    return C as text
    end FetchFileContainer

I have a text field in my jsf page.By default I want to put the cursor into this text field.when a letter is entered into this text field, the data table below this text field must change depending upon the value entered into the text field. After this change also, the cursor must be in the same text field.
    how it is possible.
when I entered any letter in this field, there is a call to the server.the cursor must be in that textfield after the call.

    Use DOM+JS.
With element.focus() you can set the focus on the desired element.
With the 'onkeypress' attribute you can execute some piece of Javascript on every key press, for example submitting the form or doing an AJAX request.

  • Positioning cursor in editable text-field

It is almost impossible to position the cursor in a text-field. Even though I have very thin finger it takes me more than two tries to position the cursor. Would be nice if on a future PlayBook-update the behaviour of text-selection and cursor-positioning would be improved. Works much better on Android-devices (okey, they often have a scrollball) and iPhone.

i dont have that issue with my fat fingers anymore with some practice. are you lightly touching or mashing while you select? i found mashing to make it less accurate. remember it is the first part that touches that makes the selection and not the top of your finger or thumb.

  • Text messages in Safari are garbled on Mac Pro after Snow Leopard install

When reading or composing my Yahoo mail text messages in Safari on my Mac Pro after Snow Leopard, the wording is very garbled. Looks like o's, s's, c's, some caps, with lots of spaces intermixed. Messages look ok on Firefox, on same machine. New messages and reading sent messages look ok on my MacBook and MB Air. When cutting and pasting into something else (like this window), the text looks fine. I can compose and send messages that look garbled, but the right words and letters go out. HTML messages look ok. Any clues for solution?

I have this happening in bunch of different HTML pages. Here's a screenshot of the same page in Safari (Version 4.0.3 (6531.9)) and Mac OS X 1.6.1 side by side with Camino:

Camino renders the page correctly. Safari is really unusable with this problem. Tried switching to and from 64-bit mode in Safari, didn't help either.

Safari 5.1.8 is broken in Snow Leopard. Application will show in menubar, but all menu choices are nonfunctional.

Run through this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
It might have to do with the way Safari works on the Internet and the rash of attacks occuring
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/mar/27/cyber-attack-spamhaus-slows-dow n-internet
I also booted up Safai today which I hardly use and it was incredibly slow as well.
I don't know if it's Safari or me not using it for such a long time.
If the above fixes don't work, all I can suggest is to use Firefox or whatever until this attack thing blows over and see after that.

  • Adobe Reader Plugins for Safari 5 on Snow Leopard

Our software uses Adobe Reader to open, edit, and save Pdf Forms.  Most of our customer base is on Windows but we now have some MAC users as well.  Everything works fine except using Safari 5 on Snow Leopard.  It appears as if the plug ins are not loading properly or at all when Reader 9 is installed.  When a user goes to open a PDF Form, nothing happens.
My personal Macbook which I have at the office, is Leopard with Safari 5 and when I download Reader 9, I can see the plugins in Safari and everthing works fine.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks

On Snow Leopard 10.6, you need to run Safari in 32 bit mode to get the Adobe Reader Plugin to load and launch properly.
    To do this,
    1) exit Safari.
    2) in the Finder go to your Applications folder, select Safari and do File->Get Info
    3) Check 'Open in 32-bit mode' in the General pane of that dialog
    4) Relaunch Safari
    5) Under the Safari Help->Installed Plug-ins you should now see the Adobe Reader plugin support.
I am able to get Safari to open forms inline in Reader this way.  I am not able to get the Adobe Forms with Adobe Javascript running in this mode.  Any insight on how this might be done would be helpful.  It does work in the Standalone Reader, but so far no luck enabling it in the Safari plugin.

  • How to sync Safari  bookmarks from snow leopard to a iPad Air?

How does one transfer, or sync Safari  bookmarks from snow leopard to a iPad Air without involving iCloud?

Give Xmarks a try, they have an iOS app as well. It will not sync directly to Safari on the iPad, you open the links through the app.

  • Re: Cannot update Safari on OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8

So what do I do when websites inform me that Safari 5.1.10 is no longer supported, while I am strongly opposed to surrendering OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro? The Snow Leopard OS is by far the best operating system ever made! And the Lion operating system on my iMac has been a disaster that has cost me $$$$ in downtime. I NEED Snow Leopard for important work I cannot accomplish with Lion. Furthermore, all the reviews I've read about Mavericks and Yosemite suggest those systems are also loaded with problems.

Thanks, QuickTimeKirk and Eric, for your comments. However...
I have Firefox and I hate it, because it's ALWAYS being updated. I spend too many work-related hours on the Internet, and the disruption caused by updates is a nuisance, especially when most of those updates have no major effect on performance or utility. Safari seems to be built from the inside out to work smoothly within the OS with little or no further attention.
Apple is the world's richest company at over $700 billion, about double Exxon Mobile, the #2 corporation. Couldn't Apple manage to issue a Safari update for Snow Leopard? Either that, or rid the newer operating systems of all their bugs. What's the hangup?
What bugs? Why would Apple spend money supporting a six year old system that has not been issued an update for four years? And why not support every other old OS X before? Because the hardware is growing to old to run the new releases of Safari etc. If the latest version you can update to is not satisfactory and you refuse to use an updatable third party browser, or update to a modern OS X (I am not sure what 'bugs'  you are referring to, you failed to mention) then you are locking yourself into some tiny little corner with a couple of friends where Apple would never bother looking or, for that matter, spend millions supporting.
If you make your choices and they are not realistic or possible, then you should consider changing your habits as millions upon millions of others had done.
    Good Luck
    Pete

  • Scripts broken under Snow Leopard?

I wrote a script using AppleScript Editor. After several tests, running it manually from within AppleScript Editor, it seems to work just fine and does what I want it to. So, I saved a copy of the script as "run only". Supposedly, I should now be able to double-click the run-only script in order to run it without opening the editor. But, when I double-click the file, I get two pop-up windows. The first says: "Unable to read the file because the script is not editable (it was saved as run-only)", the second says "The document 'myscript' could not be opened."
Are scripts broken under Snow Leopard?

    sauljaffe wrote:
That's absurd. What purpose does the "run-only" option have then?
that's needed when people publish applications they created and don't want others to see source code. this is done to all commercial software to protect against software piracy. you can do it to your own home made programs too if you want using that button.
If you can't run it, and can't open it with the editor, then you have a file on your system you can only do one thing with: move it to the trash.
There must be a way to save scripts so they can be run without opening the editor first.
of course there is. you save the script as an application. then to run it you double-click on it.
If "run-only" isn't it, then what is it?

  • Why do HOME and END ignore focus in text fields?

I just noticed that the HOME and END keys seem to ignore focus in a text field on webpages.
Normally, they go to the beginning and end of a webpage, which is perfectly fine with me. And in fact it's quite useful on really really long webpages.
However, when my cursor is in a text field (“focused”), I expect HOME to go to the beginning of the line and END to go to the end of the line. However, this is not the case.
    1. Does anybody know why this is the case?
    2. Does anybody know if this can be changed to my desired behavior?

    Well, I'll be damned!
I feel a bit sheepish, but I'd never noticed that that was the way Home and End worked everywhere. For some reason I had assumed it was Safari-only. Once I read your post, I was purposely mindful about the keys I was using, and I realized that I'd learned to automatically use ⌘← and ⌘→ when editing text elsewhere. Weird.
I think this probably arose from the fact that my first Apple computer was a laptop, and since Home and End are built into the arrow keys on the smaller keyboard, I suppose it was enough to mask the difference.
    *Follow-up question:*
Is there a technical / usability / official reason for this discrepancy? I remember being taught the function of Home and End in computer classes in Elementary School (late 80s and early 90s for me). Some of the computers in these classes were Apple and some where PCs. (I acknowledge that Apple during that time is not the same as Apple after Steve Jobs returned as CEO, but if the cause of this difference is Apple vs. Microsoft related, then I thought it was possibly relevant.)
