Cursor freeze on Macbook Pro

Hi,
I have a 2009 Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
I am experiencing a recurring problem with the cursor freezing and/or completely disappearing. This happens in virtually any program (i.e. it's not just in Safari or related to flash as far as I can tell). Nothing fixes this problem. Force Quit has no effect. The only thing I can do is push the power button until the Macbook shuts off and restart it. This is becoming more and more frequent and is really frustrating me.
I've searched discussions and googled the problem but I've yet to find a solution.

I too have a 2008 MBP.  I have never had a problem with it until these past few months. It finally froze up and the screen went black and could not get it to come back.  Took it to the Apple Store who sent it out for repairs.  Came back with a new logic board and a couple other things I do not remember.  Now the computere freezes a couple of times a day and needs a hard reboot. The fan runs loud and fast before it shuts down.  Sometimes on the reboot the screen looks like it has flood lights shining from the floor of a stage on stage curtains.  Makes it very difficult to use this way.  Took it back to the store and they could not get it to duplicate the problem.  Told me to take pictures if it happens again.  Took pictures this time and the time where the log-in screen is no more than a shadow behind the the black veil.  I did not have this problem prior to the repair.  While they got it running, I spend several times a day rebooting and rebooting, and rebooting.  Very difficult to work this way.  I too want to know why this seems to be a major issue with 2008, 2010 and 2011 MBP and there is no response from Apple.  I guess we are on the way back to the store-- a 2 hour drive each way. Will let you know if they find anything.

  • Cursor freezes on Macbook Pro 2011

I Purchased a 2011 Macbok Pro a month ago and every once in a while my curser freezes.  Do I need to download a driver to fix my issue?
    Please advise. Joanne

Any drivers would have been updated with the MBP 10.6.7 update. Have you tried adjusting the tracking speed or scrolling speed for the trackpad? You can find that in Sys Preferences. You can also try resetting the PRAM. To do this shutdown the computer. With your left hand hold down the option and command key. Power on the computer and immediately with your right hand hold the P key down wiht your little finger and the R key wiht your index finger so you have the option+command P and R keys all held down. Wait until you hear the Apple chime twice then release all keys and let the computer boot up. Try that and see if that helps. I'm assuming you're using the trackpad correct? Have you noticed if this happens while running on battery or using the power adapter? Hope this helps. Try that and keep an eye on it. Post back and let us know how it's going.

Cs5 Brush cursor problem, on MacBook pro, tried the latest update, and the genious dude had no idea of what to do! Apple any fix?

Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break.  1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned.  No restart, no power on/off - nothing.  Frustration.  If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.

  • I can't completely control my cursor on my macbook pro, and it keeps jumping to the right of the screen and switching my screen to the dashboard or utilities. Any ideas on what might be causing this, and what I can do about it?

If you have another pointing device installed, remember that the Mac uses "all sources live". You can literally use two or more mice or two or more keyboards at once.
Your trackpad, if that is what you are using, must be very clean. Any debris may be seen as another "finger".

  • Randomly freezing cursor on NEW Macbook Pro

I have a new 17" Macbook Pro - 2 weeks old. I noticed almost immediately that there was an issue with either the trackpad being unresponsive OR the computer
is thinking before acting. Anyway, the cursor freezes randomly - sometimes for a second, and sometimes for several seconds. I've been very conscious of how I'm tracking, I have everything turned off in the trackpad preferences.
Is this a software or hardware issue and will I need to bring the unit in for
    exchange or repair?
    thank you.

Reformat the drive using 'Zero all data' under Security Options and reinstall your system. If it still does it after that, have it looked at.

  • My cursor on my MacBook Pro has been freezing up in a weird way, usually when connected to the Thunderbolt display: the cursor can still move around, but I can't click on anything and have to reboot

I ran EntreCheck in case this is helpful in diagnosing the problem:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

When I open iMovie and scroll through my imported videos the rainbow cursor (sorry I dont know the correct name) appears and I can't do anything until it goes away. Why does this happen? How can I increase the performance of my MacBook to stop it freezing?
P.S I only have iMovie running when editing videos (nothing else is open)

  • ITunes freezes entire Macbook Pro

I bought a Macbook Pro back in December and it's great. I have consistently been having one particular problem that is irritating me quite a lot. I turn on my computer. I only open iTunes, the only thing running, and I'll start up some music. I go about my day working in photoshop and surfing the net and blah blah listening to music. A song comes on that I don't really like so I got in to iTunes to change it. Well, I go flipping through cover flow in itunes and play a song and suddenly my computer locks up. AH. My mouse is still fully functional and my music is still playing. My "loading" twilry rainbow circle cursor comes up and never goes away. My hot corners don't work. My keyboard won't work. Force quitting doesn't work. I can't do anything except listen to my music and move my mouse around. This has happened a number of times now. I have tried to wait and see if it ever unfreezes(I have sat for about 30 minutes waiting) and it never seems like it will so I am forced to hold down the power button. Now, I switched to Mac because it seemed that nothing ever went wrong with Macs and I wouldn't have to worry about things like this. It's very frustrating to lose files and unsaved work while listening to music. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but if someone could give me a little insight it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem. I, however, am running a Black 2.16 GHz, 2G Ram, 160G MacBook with the latest version of Leopard. My MacBook was running perfectly until the iTunes 7.6 update last January. Then I got the same results you all have been mentioning. Since then I have updated iTunes to 7.6.1 hoping for a fix, to no avail.
But a week ago, it all got worse. Last Wednesday, my MacBook froze, and not with iTunes. Since then, I can't use it for longer than a few minutes without getting a complete freeze, where the only way out is a hard restart. Not only that, but sometimes I don't even have iTunes open. When I do, though, it just happens quicker. I've had to do hard restarts up to six times in one sitting, until I gave up. I've fixed permissions, I've tried everything, but nothing. I even tried scanning for viruses. The first time it just froze again. I'm scanning it again as we speak, hoping to find a culprit and fix this once and for all.
In any case... I feel you all's pain. I hope we can find a fix for this soon.

  • SAFARI FREEZES MY MACBOOK Pro retina  ALL THE TIME, HOW CAN I FIX IT ?

Safari freezes all the time my Macbook Pro and I have to restart it.

  • Cursor disappears on macbook pro windows 8.1

I have a MacBook Pro running Windows 8.1.  Over the past few weeks, while doing work (email, Word, Powerpoint  - basic office work), the cursor would disappear.  I would need to restart the computer for the cursor to reappear.  Today, the cursor has disappeared and I can't get it back with a restart.  I have read many posts on disappearing cursors but none seem to fix my problem.  All other functions (as far as I can tell) are functioning.  I am using the trackpad.  All features work except for the ability to see the cursor.  I have tried the following:
    1. Restart
    2. Power off / on
    3. Looking for additional microsoft updates and updating.
    4. Removing updates that have installed in the past 5 days
    5. Removing update KB2919355 (It wouldn't let me so it reinstalled it)
    6. Mouse settings - I tried changing scheme, size etc - no change.  I was able to select within Mouse Properties - Press CNTRL to see Mouse - this works.  When I press the control button - it shows me a target of where the cursor is but it doesn't show the cursor - WORKAROUND.
    7. Added a mouse - it connected, made a sound as it connected but same situation as cursor - functional but can't see the cursor
    8. Went to MSconfig and tried booting in Diagnostic set up - CURSOR REAPPEARED - but no idea which app is causing the problem.
    9. I went back to MS Config and did normal mode - cursor disappeared at restart  and disabled all the start up apps and restarted - still no cursor.
    10. I pressed all the FN+F1, f2,f3 etc. - no change
    11. I checked to make sure I was only using 1 screen (and not extending my screen).
I have an appointment at the Genius bar on Monday but there has to be an easy fix to this.  Any ideas?

Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break.  1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned.  No restart, no power on/off - nothing.  Frustration.  If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.

  • Screen Freeze from MacBook Pro to MacBook

When using Face time from my 2008 era mac book pro to a basic mac book of the same vintage, the screen freezes and the app bombs on the mac book. Is this a memory problem. No problem going from an iphone 4 to the mac book. Is it the mac book pro or the basic mac causing the problem? Anybody have any insight?

  • Magic Trackpad Update Freezes my Macbook Pro

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro and purchased a Magic Trackpad for it yesterday. It worked (minus scrolling, etc) without doing the 1.0 update. I ran the Update Programs function and it suggested the update - which I ran. Now my MacBook freezes with a spinning wheel at the Apple icon. I've tried all the standard way to fix it - boot with shift, command-v, command-s and nothing helps. Any ideas of how to manually (via Unix console) delete the last update so I can have my MacBook back? Thanks

Then again even with fully recharged batteries it is sometimes not as precise as the built in trackpad on the MacBook.

  • ITunes freezes my Macbook Pro

Hey everyone. I just purchased a brand new 15" Macbook Pro with a 128GB SSD. My first Mac after 13 years using PCs.
OSX Lion is the current version.
iTunes is also the most current version.
    All software is up-to-date.
Every time i open up iTunes, my Macbook begins to freeze. It starts with a small lag of a few seconds, and the longer iTunes is running the longer my Macbook becomes unresponsive. After only about 5 minutes, it gets to the point where nothing will move at all and I am forced to do a hard shutdown.
It's done it since the very first moment I had it, and i just recieved it from Apple 3 days ago.
What's the deal here? I am not overloading it with too many applications, in fact I can run nothing but iTunes and it does the same thing.
What could possibly be the issue?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Photoshop CS6 trial installation freezes my Macbook Pro

Hey all, a question here for you.
I have a 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro with 4GB or RAM running 10.7.4. Whenever I try to install the Photoshop CS6 (or any other trial for that matter), the install stops halfway through and freezes my computer.
I've made sure that I uninstalled all of my other CS5.5 stuff and even downloaded the Adobe Cleaner to clean my system out. I even went through AppZapper to get rid of all other CS5.5 stuff too and yet this still happens to me.
    Any idea what's going on?

    Hi Chaps
I had the same issues as most of you I have both a 27'' and a macbook pro 17''.
I Rang adobe support and the only thing I got out of it was being disconnected all of the time.
I had no issues installing on my 27'' but I had freezing on my macbook pro so I read all the ways you tried to install cs6 and this is the method I got ps6 installed.
my config for macbook pro is the icore 7 and 8 gig ram
    1. I unistaled photoshop previous versions and any left over folders associated with photoshop I deleted.
2 I went in to disk utility and turned of under preferences ""verify checksum"
3 I put my mac into safeboot mode and I had no issue instaslling ps cs6
4.rebooted my back and turned on verify checksum in disk utility preferences.
I hope this helps you out I have only just converted over to mac so I am not that technical with them yet.
Good luck and looking forward to hearing that what I did helped you
    Cheers
