Cursor freezes, cursor freezes

Has anyone found a solution to  system freezing at stratiup after upgrading to Mavericks?

Hey advartec,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing performance issues with your Mac after upgrading to Mavericks. The following resources may help to resolve your issue:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly

Help!!!    My cursor freezes up on some web pages in safari.  They start fine then freeze.  A reload gives the same problem. I can navigate backwards using the cursor on the back arrow and I can reload the page. I can also close the page clicking the red dot.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • Having a problem with Firefox using Hotmail email. Inbox - as checking messages it freezes up or a 1 item window follows cursor and does not allow you to enter

I am having a problem accessing Hotmail email messages via Fireflox server. When I am in the Inbox, reviewing messages, it either freezes up or a "1 item" small icon window follows cursor and does not allow me to enter messages or do anything. Have to log off and start over. Suggestions>?

Can you detect any pattern to it, whether related to messages with attachments, or particular advertising on the page, etc.?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
(Usually the dialog will refer to live.com rather than hotmail.com, that's normal.)
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

  • Intel iMac 20" freezing up. Cursor, iTunes

I have had a new Intel 21.5" l iMac for 3 months and it started freezing up about a month ago. At first, it was just occasionally, but as time went on, the freezing happened more often, each time the same way: the trackball cursor and wireless keyboard would lock up, along with the entire computer. If I had music runnning in iTunes, it would stop, but if I was viewing a video clip, it would continue running and would not freeze. At that point, the only thing I could do was to emergency shutdown the computer by pressing and holding the Power button for several seconds. I could then restart it again using the Power button, as normal. I am not sure what to do at this point. I am thinking of reinstalling everything again but not use Time Machine reinstall the old files, since there may be something defective lurking there. But first, I'd like to hear if anyone else has had this same problem and what, if anything, they did to solve the problem. I have looked at the other "freezing up" problems, but none sound exactly like mime. I will appreciate any help in this matter.

I used to have the exact same issue (I have a 17 iMac with Core 2 Duo), and I discovered that it was my HP printer drivers that would start up and hog all CPU and RAM. I uninstalled the HP drivers, and everything works just fine. (In other words, if you have installed any drivers from HP for printers, scanners, or just about anything else, you should take a look under 'Activity Monitor' to see what processes are taking so much of your system power).

  • G570 USB mouse cursor freezing constantly

The problem will be explained lower but let me tell you how this was.
So I've had this problem like 1,5 years ago, after I bought the laptop. So I bought a cheap mouse for it back then, and I noticed that the laptop had problems with the USB mouse, fine, I thought it was the poor mouse, so I bought another cheap one, and it worked fine. Then I bought a gamepad, and again, this problem.
Today I bought a gaming mouse, and the problem re-appeared. I've been searching through the internet all day long.
Basically, the mouse cursor freezes constantly, also with that "plugged-unplugged" sound, but the touchpad works.
I've been looking all around, tried the mouse on another laptop and it works fine.
    I've tried:
    - Starting the laptop in safe mode.
    - Uninstalling/reinstalling the realtek USB reader or w/e its name is.
    - The device manager trick (I think you know what I'm talking about)
    - Been changing the OS many times after I bought the laptop, that problem persisted with the gamepad.
    - Tried different ports around the laptop.
None of them helped. BUT, I saw that actually it hangs when the CPU is throttling. I've changed my power plan to energy saver and the problem went away. I've changed the maximum/minimum CPU power, the problem went away.
But the frequency sets constantly at 800 MHz. What can I do to keep it at 2200 MHz (i3-2330M clock speed) and also keep the mouse working well?

    Hey Barrett_killz,
      Welcome to the forums
I would suggest you trying out a different USB mouse and see if that helps
Cant suggest anything else as you have already uninstalled and installed the Drivers

A few days ago my G5 started to freeze up while in use. It doesn't matter if in Safari, iTunes, Pages, etc. The cursor will not respond nor does any keystroke, force quit, escape, etc. I have to hold the power button down to shut the computer down. Then, try to restart. Sometimes restart will work and the computer will work for a while and then freeze again. Other times on restart, instead of the Apple logo at start up, I get a Zero with a line thru it, have to power off and restart again. When it does restart, the "spinning gear" takes a lot longer than normal to spin up and take me to the login screen. Have been told it may be my hard drive getting ready to fail. Have looked at disk utilities, S.M.A.R.T looks fine, "verified" and have verified disk, and repaired permissions. In case it is the hard drive, I bought external hard drive and hooked it up to Time Machine. The backing up to a long time, overnight, about 10 hours because it kept freexing up and I would have to shut down and try restarting again. Finally got everything backed up.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!!!   Could it be my hard drive is dying? Is the the normal chain of events or is it something else???

Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Why does Safari freeze when the cursor hovers across "Bookmarks"?

    Safari v 4.1
    Hi,
When I move the cursor over "Bookmarks" in the menu at the very top of the window, Safari freezes for about 5 minutes. It can also freeze when the cursor is simply passing under the "Bookmarks". When I'm moving the cursor horizontally across the entire screen, I have to keep the cursor well below the top menu bar to avoid freezing Safari. Otherwise Safari is working OK. I often Force Quit" Safari when this happens, but if I wait, it will unfreeze.
This is all about hovering, not clicking.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it.
    Thanks, Rafael

    Hi Carolyn.
First, about resetting. I've never done it before, and I recall hearing—but have no direct experience—that it practically wipes the slate clean. I've built a very sophisticated Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu, and because I'm a researcher, I never erase history. When I started using Safari a long time ago, I was told by Apple to regularly erase history. Then a couple of years ago I was told by someone I trust that it's OK to keep it.
I regularly empty Cache and remove cookies.
Are these the top 5 buttons?:
    1 Clear history
    2 Reset Top Sites
3 Remove all webpage preview images
    4 Empty the cache
    5 Clear the Downloads window
I got this list from Safari Help>Resetting Safari. I'm using Safari 4.1, but I noticed that this help page referred to Safari 5 in the 'Reset Top Sites' explanation: "Reset Top Sites: … Top Sites page reverts to showing the webpage previews displayed when you first installed Safari 5."
    As for the rest:
2 Reset Top Sites—I’ve never made use of this
3 Remove all webpage preview images—not familiar or I don’t recognize what it is.
4 Empty the cache—Fine with that
5 Clear the Downloads—window Fine with that
I’m letting you know about these details before I proceed with your instructions.
    Thanks for responding,
    Rafael
PS Since I'm asking about Bookmarks here, I've been meaning to find out something about my Safari Bookmarks.html that is exported, then backed up to one of my external HDs. If Safari or my computer crashes, and I re-install Safari, then import those bookmarks, are they re-created to look just as they do now in 'Show All Bookmarks'?
I have some old bookmarks (or 'Favorites' I think they were called) that, when imported (in an html format?), appeared as a long list, rather than as a neatly tiered record of folders and files.

  • Cursor Freezing

Several days ago my 2008 Mac Pro running 10-6-8 experienced a grey curtain freeze that required the computer to be restarted by the power button three times before it would work. Over the last few days the cursor has frozen three more times and it will work on restart.
In diagnostics I am getting this message:
    Power On Self-Test:
      Last Run:     10/8/12 10:13 AM
      Result:     Failed
      Failure Type:     Memory
Memory Slot:     DIMM 1/DIMM Riser A
Does this mean that the memory has gone bad in Riser A and needs to be replaced? I know it seems obvious that that would be the case but I
wanted to be sure. Do I need to preform any other test. I checked the memory to be sure it was correctly seated and it appeared to be.
    Thanks,
    Mary

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking for the OS X disk but haven't been able to find it yet. Can it be downloaded and if so how could a download be used?

I have to unplug and replug the USB dongle to unfreeze it.  This problem isn't due to my session, it also happen on a new 10.6 installation on another hard drive. It happens as I connect it on a USB hub or directly to a computer's USB port.

  • 10.6.8 cursor freeze

    Hi,
I clean installed a family member's Macbook Pro 3,1 with 10.6.8 and noticed the cursor will frequently freeze for between 5 to 30 seconds. The cursor freeze was evident prior to installing any 3rd party apps and does not seem to effect any other process happening at the same time. Trashing a file, ejecting a mounted drive or performing a Spotlight search (and some other random tasks) will result in the cursor temporarily not responding to trackpad movement. No information has been written to the logs to suggest a process error. I have reapplied the combo 10.6.8, repaired permissions and also checked the SMART status of the internal HD. Has anyone else noticed this after installing 10.6.8? Thanks

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • 2011 Mac Mini, 10.8.3, SSD - System CPU at constant 10%, frequent 0.5 sec cursor freezes

Hi.  I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM. I have an SSD installed in it as the primary drive, along with another internal 2TB drive and an external USB 2TB drive for media. This machine is mostly used as a media server and player.  It's been running Mountain Lion since I bought it (refurb) last year.  I upgraded to 10.8.3 as soon as that came out, and was running for a while without any problems. This evening, though, I started to notice some problems.
The main issue is that the CPU (well, one core) seems to be constantly under load. Under Activity Monitor I'm watching the system load (but not user load) hover between about 8% and 12%, all of the time.  But looking at the program list, I don't see anything taking up more than about 2% of CPU, and that is taken up by Activity Monitor itself.
The annoying way that this manifests itself in the UI is that if I'm just randomly moving the cursor around in a circle, I can watch it periodically hang and freeze for about half of a second every 3-4 seconds or so. Meanwhile, everything else on the system also seems to freeze up for about half a second at the same time, which makes watching Netflix extremely irritating. (With Netflix the sound plays as normal, but the video freezes briefly every few seconds - I verified this in both Firefox and Chrome so I doubt it's a browser thing.)
I've already tried some troubleshooting steps myself. (None of this has worked yet.)
I saw a lot of messages in console about "mdworker deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd", which googling around for led me to this page; per the instructions there I booted into safe mode, waited a bit and rebooted, and now I don't see those messages any more. (I didn't mess with the sandbox.sb file, about which, really? Apple implemented this in Scheme or something?)  Just to be on the safe side, though, I disabled Spotlight indexing with sudo mdutil -a -i off.
I opened Disk Util and ran a verify on all three disks, no errors.  I found one or two permissions that needed repairing on the startup SSD and repaired them.  The problem persisted.  I also cleared out my caches with Maintenance while I was at it.
As a side note, even when I rebooted in safe mode, I was still seeing the same behavior (periodic half-second mouse freezes, system CPU averaging a constant 10% or so in Activity Monitor).
I also spent some time reading this other thread which looked like it had some very useful advice (unlike that poster, though, my Spotlight processes aren't crashing).  So I went ahead and followed Linc Davis's first set of instructions in that thread.  Here's what I've got for steps 1 and 2.
    1. Activity monitor
Highest-CPU process is Activity Monitor at about 1-2% CPU
    CPU: User 1%, system ~10%, idle ~90%
System memory: Page outs 0, swap used 0 bytes
Disk activity: Reads in/sec 0, Writes out/sec 0 (these infrequently spike up to about 40 or 50 max)
    2. System log
I put up a gist for this here.  It's my last 50 messages or so, probably some are coming from the most recent reboot.  I can see the "IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending" messages which I presume are linked to my cursor freezes, but nothing else looks obviously suspicious to me.  The stuff about "menucracker" is down to MenuMeters; I uninstalled it and rebooted at one point just to check, but it didn't seem to make a difference so I reinstalled it.
As far as kexts go, the only one I had that wasn't Apple was SoundFlower. I actually need that one, I use it to stream files from Plex, but I went ahead and uninstalled it anyways, and it didn't make a difference.  My launchd lists start up sickbeard, sabnzbd, and plex, but I've manually quit all of those and the problem persists, so I highly douby any of them are to blame.
Any advice greatly appreciated.  Is there a better way that I can see what exactly is causing the high system CPU load, like can I list processes by number of kernel calls or something?  I did try top and ps but I didn't see anything obviously different from Activity Monitor in their output.

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
    ??? it is a mystery! ???

  • New condition baffling mouse cursor freezes if I put it on a flat surface even with ac plugged in

    Hi all
I am now really stumped.  Here is the situation
ac adaptor plugged in mouse freezes
UNTIL I plug in WIRED and working lan cable.
if I unplug the lan cable from the router the mouse cursor freezes.
NOW that would be strange enough BUT if I unplug the LAN cable the mouse freezes again as expected UNTIL I lift up the S10 ( doesn't matter how I do it) the mouse starts to work again!!!! with the ac plugged in. So now you are all thinking it's the ac socket !!! nope thought about that and it's got nothing to do with it.   The mouse freezes the moment I put the computer down on a flat surface or even near it.
It's as if the bloody thing is effected by proximity to a mass ? anyone got any ideas

    Hi majorkong,
Additional ideas are possible shorts internal to the system.  I definitely have a reason to believe that the unit has a hardware problem.  This is either through the touchpad, touchpad cable, or on the motherboard.
As I see here you have already communicated with us before.  Here is your previous thread with us.
    Have a good night.

  • Photoshop CS2 cursor freezes

Since I updated to OSX10.4.3, some brushes in Photoshop CS2 cause an application freeze, with the rainbow beachball and "Application not responding" in the dock. The brush cursor still moves and becomes the cursor for everything else running, including the Finder. Adobe's forum shows others with this problem but it has happened for me only since 10.4.3 update. It seems to occur with Scatter brushes more often and happens with either the mouse or a Wacom tablet. I am saving more often since I lost 1+ hour's work when the cursor went AWOL. Photoshop has always been nearly bulletproof until now. I never had brush cursor problems before 10.4.3.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if not in use, is the Wacom tablet still connected during these cursor acts? What if the tablet is removed?

Yes, all I can tell you is that Finder does not have that function in ML. Your system is "working as expected".
