Cursor Frozen on restart

My cursor is frozen--even after forced restart. Unplugging mouse doesn't help.
I have the log in screen, but I can't log in, restart, or shutdown, except by forced restart button.
Help please.
Thanks,
BH

Hi Beth in MN,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
Do you have an extra mouse you can try? Have you tried plugging the mouse into a different usb port. What port is it plugged into now? Keyboard port or usb port on the side of the Mac?
Did you have any specific application open when this occured?
post back and let us know if you can,

  • Mac OS 8.6 Cursor Frozen after print driver install and restart.

Installed Epson SC 980 Print driver on Mac OS 8.6.  After install, I was prompted to restart the computer.  Upon restart the window that contained the "Installer" button remains onscreen and the cursor is frozen.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Strange. Starting up with Extensions Off is supposed to prevent most extensions, including all 3rd-party software, and anything in the Startup Items folder from loading.
Can you tell if it is an app itself which is running? Or is it a window for a disk image or something similar?
You can also try resetting the PRAM while booting with Extension Off, just in case some non-valid instruction got set in PRAM (that should be a no-no for software, but mistakes do happen).
To do that, restart or boot. Immediately press the Command-Option-P-R keys, keep them held down until you've heard a total of three sets of startup chimes. Then release those keys and hold down Shift, keeping it held down until the desktop appears. If you have control over the machine then, you can do some hunting for the Epson software that's causing the issue and get rid of it.
Next level of user control to try is booting to a CD. If you have an OS Install CD, such as one for OS 8.6, which is valid for that machine, try booting the machine to the CD. This should render any software on the hard drive inert, and thus give you an opportunity to hunt the culprit down and remove it.

  • Cursor frozen, can't shut down

The cursor on my MacBook is frozen in position and won't respond to the trackpad. There's a window open in finder for resetting the pointer for an alias, but it doesn't respond to keyboard commands. In addition, I've been unable to shut down or restart. Oddly, the keys for making the screen brighter/darker and changing the audio volume are working fine.
    Any ideas?

Hey szandara and welcome to the forum -
It sounds like you have some sort of process that has locked up and you need to force quit that process. It would be hard to determine what that process is and at the same time, it would be hard to navigate the Activity Monitor in order to Force Quit it.
In order to shutdown your MacBook you can try pressing the Start Button briefly to display a window for Shutdown and then hitting Return to Shutdown.
I hope this helps - GDF

  • Mountain lion frozen on restart

I don't know why but I decided to download mountain lion on my 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro cos it didn't come with it.
Now after an easy installation it is completely frozen on "closing applications and preparing to restart..." screen for 1hour with the rainbow thing spinning
    What do I do?

Something went wrong during update, seemingly.
Force-shut-down by pressing and holding the power button. Then boot, see what happens. If trouble, boot from the recovery partition and go through the OS X install routine again.

  • My itunes on ipad is frozen. Restarting itunes or ipad not working. Help?

I downloaded a movie from itunes.  Now when I try and open itunes it freezes the app.  Restarting itunes and the ipad hasn't worked.  Any ideas?

    Hello ThatsmeMT,
You may need to force close all open apps, then restart (or reset as necessary) your iPad.
iOS: Force an app to close

  • IPhone frozen on restart

My iPhone has been freezing up a lot lately. Usually, restarting it will solve the problem. Today, however, it seems to be freezing on the restart screen. It's been like this for the last 3-4 hours now; either freezing on the apple logo, or going as far as showing the apple logo plus the moving circle "thinking" icon.
I can't get it past this! Everything is charged. I can access all my data through iTunes -- I synced all my contacts and uploaded my pictures thinking I'd have to restore. Every time I've tried to restore, however, I get an error.
    Any ideas?

Alright, I got it into recovery mode and managed to do a restore in iTunes. After the restore finished, I got a message saying my iPhone was restarting and to keep it connected until it shows up in the iTunes menu.
It got stuck again on the apple logo -- I don't want to say it's frozen because the circle "thinking" icon is moving (there has got to be a better name for that), but it's not going past that. It hasn't shown back up in iTunes yet either. I tried restarting it again with no luck.
Any other ideas? I appreciate the help.

  • Cursor frozen on new t440

    Hi everyone,
The cursor on my new t440 is completely unresponsive after a recent startup. Neither the trackpad nor track point work, and trying a usb mouse also proved unsuccessful, so I don't think it is a driver issue. Nothing changes upon restart or switching from sleep/hibernate mode.
I'm worried something might have occurred internally since it was on for a long time just before this, although I don't think it was overheating or anything. Has anyone here encountered a similar problem?
    Thanks in advance.

The definitive test would be to boot into a Linux live environment and see if it works there.

  • IPod frozen - cannot restart - makes strange noises whilst trying to charge

    my iPod is dying!
the iPod froze while i was listening to my tracks and i tried to restart it (as i've done it before) and nothing happened. Then i noticed the icon that indicates that the battery is totally drained and i have to charge the ipod at least for 30mins before iTunes will recognize it again.
Ive charged it now much longer then 30mins, that icon has disappeared as soon as i connected the ipod to my charger and there is the black screen with the white apple, the ipod did get warm, still makes strange sounds as if it restarts or something and the screen goes grey and empty back to black screen with white apple. it wont stop doing it.
What is wrong with it???? Cant use public transport anymore without my ipod pls help, am desperate!

thanks - tried but unfortunately didn't help. At the moment, when i try to charge it i get the battery sign for a little while, then the ipod restarts again. over and over again. iTunes still won't recognize my iPod.
I've called technical support ("Hello, how's your iPod today? - well, what ya think when i call you guys???) and will go to the iPod store tomorrow in case they might be able to restore my iPod and recover the tracks that Ive got on it...fingers crossed.

  • Cursor Frozen During Powering Up and No Sound

I have a T-61 purchased in late 2008 and have had two annoying problems since the beginning.  The first is my cursor freezes/locks when I power up the computer.  I have to power off by holding down the power button, then turning it back on and trying again.  Most times it will work the second time, but I've had it lock up to five times before it would work.  This happens 25-30% of the times I power up.
The second problem is frequently I will have no sound when I power up the computer, no Windows theme as it turns on, and then when I try to use Windows Media Player, I get a window with this message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
To correct it, I have to turn off the computer, power up again, and sometimes the sound will be there, other times it will take 4 or 5 times before it is working.
I've called the Lenovo tech a few times, but they could not help.  I've also looked for driver updates, etc, and could find nothing.
Anyone have any suggestions other than putting in a warranty claim for a new hard drive?
    Thanks.

you can try to run a hdd diagnostic under bios to see whether there is any issue with the hdd.
also have you tried to reinstall the os before? did this also occurred when you did reinstall everything?

  • Frozen on restart after partitioning

I am installing Windows 8.1 on an iMac running Maverick. After going through the partitioning sequence the machine automatically restarted and now shows a gray screen with a 'forbidden' circle with diagonal slash throough it. the loading cogwheel has been running for 15 minutes with no sign of anything happening.

This probably won't help if it was actually a glitch in the download, but you could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, and repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do some hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • Cursor frozen in top left corner on the apple symbol

    How do I fix this?

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Frozen Mouse + Restart Hang

I was going about my day as usual. I rebooted because my wireless connection was acting up, however, as soon as my Mac Pro logs in, the mouse is unresponsive. It works for about 5 seconds, but as soon as it is finished loading everything it stops working.
My guess was that there was something strange loading in the startup, but there was nothing in the account settings besides the iTunes helper.
I use a Mighty Mouse, so I figured I would try a second mouse to rule things out. I plugged in a Kensington optical mouse but required a reboot for it to turn on, so I did. However, when I attempt to reboot, it hangs at the spinning wheel with my desktop background.
After a long time of waiting, I held down the power button to force shut down, rebooted, and the mouse seemed to work ok, but after a couple of minutes, the Kensington mouse ALSO stopped responding. Now I have 2 unresponsive mice, and a computer that I can't properly shut down... what could cause this?
    These are my specs:
Mac Pro 2 x Quad Core 3.0 GHz
    OS X 10.5.2
    Gjunkie

    USB or Bluetooth (wireless?)
Sounds like USB, so we'll go from there. Are you using other USB devices? Try unplugging everything but the keyboard and mouse. If you're using a hub, make sure it has its own power supply.
(By the way, you can shut down from the keyboard with Ctrl-Eject...no need for the mouse and no reason to force it down.)

  • Frozen Cursor - Satellite l55

cursor frozen mid screen...cant click on anything
    keyboard doesnt work
    same in safe mode
cant access control panel because i cant click on anything
tried fn - f9 to enable mouse as I was told this could be the problem, still doesnt work
    usb mouse doesnt work
rebooted in mini xp mode and it works so was told this isnt a hardware issue but a os issue, then told to slave my hard drive to different computer to get all my data off before uninstalling/reinstalling windows....
any easier way of doing this without losing any of my data?? Thanks!

Unplug the power connector and remove the battery. Wait a minute and reattach the power adaptor. See if the computer works now. The computer may just need to be reset and by removing and draining the power, that could have fixed the problem. If it doesn't, again turn off the computer and attach a USB mouse and keyboard. Maybe that'll work with the computer. If not, you may have to remove the hard drive and slave it to a working computer in order to retrieve your old data.
