Cursor jumps when typing

I see a bit of chatter on this here and on the web, but no solutions that I can find.
When typing in a document, in wordpad for instance, the cursor (and text entry point) will suddenly jump elsewhere.  Typically up a couple of lines.  Since it happens while typing, I end up corrupting the document.
Disabling the touch pad does not solve the problem.
Clues?

Just throwing a thought into the pot; I note that the touchpad has been turned off and the cursor is still "jumping", is the press to select function for the trackpoint also turned off?

  • Cursor jumping when typing in browser - cured by opening pages

    Hello,
When typing in a browser window (Chrome, Safari, and Firefox) my cursor was jumping around. This made all my words jibberish. If I typed extremely slowly, I could get it to work. Did a restart with no success. Unplugged my computer from the internet and plugged back in to see if that would have an affect. Problem persisted. I did not power down the modem as a family member is working on a project with a severe time crunch. Out of curiosity, I opened Pages to see if my words would get jumbled there. No issues. Tried browsers again. Now they work. I am concerned about a virus because earlier today I downloaded Ubuntu for my sister whose Windows laptop has some serious issues. Not sure if this was a coincidence or if someone over at Ubuntu is playing games with me. Any opinions about what happened/is happening would be appreciated. A virus scan with VirusBarrier Plus found no issues.
    Thanks in advance,
    John

When you have a problem with a Mac, a "virus" should be the last thing you suspect, not the first. That's the Windows way of thinking.
"VirusBarrier" is completely worthless and you should get rid of it.

  • Cursor jumps when typing in all applications

As I type, in any application, the cursor jumps up and inserts itself into a line several lines above. It happens in Mail, Gmail, Pages, Notes, Text/Edit, Microsoft Word, and as I type this document. The problem has existed from when I first got the MacBook a month ago, and continues despite numerous suggested fixes by Apple Care. In addition to the trackpad I use a wireless optical mouse with the nano receiver plugged into computer’s USB port. Earlier I had the mouse in a USB hub; I stopped using the hub. No phones or electronic devices are close to the computer.
When typing I don’t touch the trackpad, but the heel of both hands hovers over its top right and left corners.
The cursor was jumping before I installed Office for Mac, and after it was un-installed during two OS re-installations; MS Word does not seem not to be the culprit. The problem is frequent but intermittent, and hard to isolate or find a trigger. Although not constant, it is distracting and time-consuming to untangle an affected paragraph. I need to use a mouse when typing, but also like to have the trackpad for scrolling and changing documents.
On the advice of Apple advisors, I have:
Erased and re-installed OS 10.9.5 (twice).
    Re-installed Pages, Numbers, Keynote.
    Re-installed Office for Mac (twice).
    Rebooted in safe mode.
Re-set PRAM and cleaned out RAM.
Repeatedly disabled/re-enabled trackpad. (SysPref>Accessibility), trying to isolate issue.
    Tried using another mouse.
Tried using trackpad only, no mouse.
    Tried changing fonts.
Monitored my typing to see if I am brushing any odd combination of keys (I type fast but make errors).
Could it be a conflict between mouse and trackpad? Am I mistakenly hitting an odd key or key combination? Could it be related to the heat of my hands hovering over trackpad? Grateful for anything that leads to a solution.
MacBook Pro (mid-2014), Retina display. OS 10.9.5 fully updated. 16GB RAM, 512 GB Flash

  • Cursor Jumps when typing an email reply

This is a weird thing once in a while while typing in a reply email on my Iphone 4 The cursor will jump down for no reason wiping out the text below. I since shut of the keyboard shortcut and it seems to be fine but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing this. Thanks

Does the cursor always drop to the bottom? If so, perhaps your hitting the text when trying to type the top row of keys.
Regarding troubleshooting, try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • Snapped cursor jumps when new plot added

I have an XY graph in while i have a "snap to point" cursor on. When I add a new plot to it.. the cursor moves plots.. but I would like it to stay still... if anyone knows.. why would this happen? not to mention.. how would I go about getting it to stay still. I have a attachment of what Im doing, on top is before adding a plot.. then below is when i added the plot.. (i have it set up so it changed the color of the plot when the cursor is snapped to its point, so thats what the color change is.)

You may also try either setting the Active Plot Property of the graph to the original plot number before and after adding new data or read the cursor's index position prior to adding the plot and simply resetting it to that position after the data is loaded.
    See the example attached.

  • Screen jumps  when typing in CS5

I have just upgraded from MX to CS5 and notice that whenever I type text onto my pages in Dreamweaver there is a slight jump in the screen at each keystroke. this also occurs when I move the mouse over the border of a table. It is extremely annoying to have the screen flickering away like this when working - can anyone tell me what the problem might be? I have a Windows Vista - PC set up.

    Hi John,
Thanks for this suggestion. My computer is a fairly standard Dell
desktop running Vista - it has an nVidia GEForce 8600 GTS graphics
    adapter with driver 7.15.11.6731.
To see if the problem is with my computer, I loaded CS5 on my old
notebook running XP and with an Intel82852 GM adapter, and there is no
jump/flicker. So it must be a problem between Dreamweaver and my desktop
Graphic adapter as no other software causes this to happen. However,
Vista tells me this is the best driver software when I checked for any
updates, so not sure where to go from here.

  • 10.4.11 update and cursor jump

This problem occurs in Thunderbird, MS Word, Allgood Solitaire, Firefox, and so on.
I let Software Update download the 10.4.11 patch. I installed, rebooted etc. The cursor jumps when I use the trackpad, and also acts as double-click when I mouse-over a link, or hover over the deck in Solitaire. Action in Word was especially annoying -- cursor would select entire paragraphs or lines as I typed. I have to keep moving the cursor out of the window. The behavior for the window reminds me of focus feature in window under X-windows or Solaris, but here I can't tu
    rn it off.so
Cursor behavior improved somewhat after running Disk Utility and fixing permissions.

I think 10.4.11 mistakenly sets Trackpad Gestures/Clicking as a default.
    Here's the solution:
System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Trackpad
    Under Trackpad Gestures, un-select Clicking.
    Good luck!

  • FF was running fine. My cursor jumped out of the text box while i was typing and now no text box on FF will let me type in it? Help!

Basically as above, i opened a new tab to search for an article and as i was typing the cursor jumped out of the box without my realising. I placed the cursor back in the box and started but no characters appeared. I tried the URL bar and again nothing. I opened Chrome and it worked fine so clearly something ive managed to do but i have no idea what!
I didn't use any shift, alt or ctrl buttons accidentally. I have tried shutting FF down and reopening but nothing.
    Can anyone help please?
As an addition, why does the cursor jump out like that?
    Thanks

Hello darrendons, try disabling graphics '''hardware acceleration'''. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • When typing my mac keeps highlighting and deleting stuff or it jumps back into an old word and starts typing in the middle of it  what is going on??

When typing my mac will highlight words and totally delete them or it will jump back into something I already typed and start typing in the middle of that word... just started doing this about three weeks ago.  Any idea what is up???

    Found the problem! Very weird!

Wow! I would have never thought to look at the battery! This problem started for me after I closed the lid of my '08 MacBook Pro last night. This morning when opened ithe lid (which seemed a little difficult) and I started typing the problem was there. I read a bunch of similar threads but nothing helped (Tap to Click...). Then I saw the above from Macrumors and looked at my battery. One side is slightly bulging and is putting pressure on the trackpad bar from below. I can avoid the problem by typing with my hands off the surface of the Mac, suspended above the keyboard, but the battery needs replacing I guess. It must have overheated when I closed the lid last night, though it should have slept properly, sometimes Chrome or Flash running in Chrome won't let it sleep. I usually just manually 'sleep' it from the Apple menu without closing the lid.
    Side note:
I just had the whole MacBook refurbished by Apple for $300 a year or so ago, but they didn't change the battery then. Still a great deal...new display, logic board, display board, ram... I swapped the original 200GB HDD for a larger hard disk (750GB) from iFixit. It's been running great ever since but I have noticed some laggy text entry recently or since switching to Mavericks...maybe related to the battery starting to fail.

  • Satellite A100-165; while typing cursor jumps to other location

    Hi,
When i write with the keyboard sometimes the cursor jumps to another location,
Just right now it jumped to the "subject" input of the thread.
    It's pretty random where it jumps but very annoying, i am running a Toshiba satellite a100 165;
Anyone got any ideas what this could be?

    Hi
    I had the same issue
I didnt notice that I touched the touchpad surface accidently while typing.
This was the reason why the cursor jumped.
You can disable the touchpad using the key combination FN+F9
Furthermore the BIOS update would be advisable too.
