Cursor moves on it's own on my 24" imac

My cursor moves on it's own. I do not have a trackpad, or Timbuktu (not sure what that is?) I have used apple support on this once all ready. They had me do a restart from the system disk, run Disk Utility, unplug everything wait and then replug, zap the p-ram, dump a preference panel. But none of it fixed the problem. The cursor just shoots off to the side or the top or bottom depending on what it's closer to. I bought a new mouse, and still had the same problem, so I returned it. I upgraded to the latest OS, still have the problem. The problem continues when I'm working in Photoshop and Illustrator, which is really frustrating because it suddenly streaks across the page while I'm painting (in PS) or if I'm working an anchor point in Illustrator it suddenly pulls it off the page.
Can anybody help me fix this once and for all?
I really appreciate any and all suggestions.

Restart the computer, as long as you're at it do a SMC reset:
SMC RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • In large PDF files my cursor moves around the page at warp speed. It does not seem to make any difference if I slow it down with Sys Prefs. This is not only in preview but also other programs to open PDFs.

In large PDF files the cursor moves at warp speed with a mind of it's own, I've tried slowing it down in Sys Pref with no luck. On small files cursor action is normal. This happens in Safari, Preview and other programs that use PDF files. Sorry to say this does not seem to be a new problem with 7.# I've had it with prvevious versions of operating system Right now I'm using a Apple wireless mouse and key board. Using the USB keyboard and mouse the same problem does not go away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Trackpoint moves on it's own..... (Lenovo X220T)

Ok, most of us know about this problem but I've not heard of any solution and I am becoming convinced that it is a software issue and not just a hardware/design flaw....
If one were to hold on the trackpoint, pushing it in one direction or another for too long, the computer starts to take control over the pointer and it fights against the direction you want to go. If you let go at this point entirely, the mouse cursor moves all on it's own.
A work-around so far, is to occasionally let go of the trackpoint during use, and if you do this often enough, the problem just doesn't happen in the first place. But sometimes it's easy to forget this, and when that happens, it's an annoyance to an otherwise awesome design that overall just works...
I want to work with the community on fixing this if we can, or getting help from the developers/drivers if need be.
One thing, I have noticed, is that if you get the problem to occur (or purposely strive to re-produce the issue) the only way to get it to stop is to wait several seconds until the cursor completely stops moving.  If you try to fight against the cursor, or move in any direction, you just end up delaying the amount of time it takes for the issue to go away, so it's best to just sit and wait it out for a second while this is happening.  You could literally keep interrupting/fighting against it, and it will continue on in error until you give up.  Because of this, I suspect that an adjustment in software or drivers might make it possible to completely correct this nagging and long standing issue that if I am not mistaken, spans multiple Lenovo systems (not just the X220), but I could be wrong on this, I only have this machine to test....
When I first looked up this problem a while back, one poster mentioned that it's part of the design of the stick, counterbalancing itself, but since if even you help it and push it in the direction it wants to go, it still continues in error until you simply wait a period of time.  And with that observation I'm questioning if there isn't more to it than just hardware counterbalancing in the joystick, but rather an issue with the ways in which the driver interacts with the hardware under these very specific circumstances.
I really would love to see this issue fixed.  It's been here since I bought the laptop on day 1 and exists both on the factory Windows 7 install that I still have on this machine and as well on my Windows 8 install.  On the Windows 7 side I am using Ultranav drivers and on the Windows 8 side I am using generic Synaptic drivers and the problem is identical.
If you are trying to reproduce the problem yourself, one strategy is to push the pointing stick very gently, but consistently in one direction without letting up, consistently keeping the same pressure until you see the cursor stop itself/fight against your input, and then let go and watch it move on it's own in the opposite direction.  You might have to try this several times until you get the right pressure but soon enough, if your system is like mine, you will spot the issue and find it fairly easy to reproduce if you try.
If anyone else has been experiencing the same behavior (occasionally or frequently) it would be useful if you could just post that you run into this issue also, just so that it can be clearly defined as a widespread issue that would appreciate some attention.  Of coarse any additional observations concerning this phenomena would be extremely welcomed.
Thank you very much, hope to get this one fixed.  TrackPoint / pointing stick is hands down my favorite built in laptop mouse style, and with practice I have learned to simply avoid this unfortunate behavior more often than not, but it still pops up despite my best efforts and it's rather frustrating as I am sure you either already know or could imagine.  -cheers

Tremendous amount of useful, extra information, can't thank you enough for all that, however I'm not quite satisfied just yet.....
I feel there is certainly extra code that could potentially be written to further alleviate this problem, (and if there isn't), why don't they consider moving on to a modified Xbox/Playstation style joystick design instead, they don't seem to suffer from such effects....
Regardless, that information helps quite a lot, but I can't help but think that this issue can be further improved upon in drivers alone (without a hardware re-design).
I don't know how the stick works exactly, even with all this extra detail.  But I'm going to assume that the hardware can at the very least A. detect a change in pressure and that  B. It can also judge the force of the pressure some-how or another/to some degree (because if you start with no touch and then move to light pressure you get a slow movement or if you start with no touch and then move to higher pressure, you get a faster movement...)
Now if it can judge the force of the pressure from a stationary position and then accurately judge and display a light touch and also do the same for a hard touch from a stationary position, then that right there tells me, that it is feasible to have the software take some overall (averaging) measurements that it can store up, either into a more permanent profile, or for one (session 'aka until you release the stick).  This stored, change in information could possibly be re-used to more effectively judge if a resetting of the zero position is actually warranted or if it's potentially a known error.
At the end of this, I'm no engineer and I don't have enough detail on how the device works, but I would re-iterate in saying, I believe this can be further improved with more effort put into the software drivers and that also if this is a permanent nagging flaw in this implementation of a pointing stick design, then it's time for an updated implementation (aka modified Playstation/Xbox analog style, etc.) of this same great pointing stick design.
Thanks, and yeah, not yet satisfied but definitely psyched the first response was amazing, please don't let the conversation end here, thanks quite a lot.  -cheers

  • W500 Issues. Cursor movement, Web page aborts, uncontrolled scrolling, random page loading

Dear Reader and / or Correspondent,
I am experiencing issues with my Lenovo laptop computer and my Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. My issues’ are many and they all revolve around the phenomenon of either a ‘floating’ cursor that wanders across the screen; or, ‘jumping’ pages or windows that appear unasked for and uncontrolled.
The cursor moves across the screen even when it is not controlled by the user. It moves like it had a will of its own. Sometime sit refuses to move at all. But if a enough time is allowed it will resume submitting to the user’s direction. On other occasions, it leaps about the screen as though it had a mind of its own. If left on its own it will wander about the surface of my desktop or inside a lit or activated Window.
Coincidently, the windows or the ‘screens’ or the ‘pages’ displayed on the LCD panel of my laptop will randomly change their content or size. If I am surfing the Internet the pages or the screens may float or leap to or transition to a prior screen iteration or to a completely new screen or to a web page that I last visited several week prior all of the
This erratic behavior began after I installed all of the recommended software updates, improvements and security downloads from Microsoft and Lenovo last week. I was acting in response to their instructions to upgrade my software defenses following the release of the STUXNET malware.
Since this phenomenon began my last week I have been unable to use my Lenovo laptop in a professional and relaxed manner. It is constantly forcing me to correct its random maneuvers and unpredictable behavior. It is a great burden and it is very inconvenient.
By the way, this unpredictable and troubling behavior occurs when I am composing correspondence, visiting web sites and playing computer games. Just typing a simple email is a challenge because of this wayward behavior. I never know where the cursor will travel to on my laptop’s screen, when it will move and how often it will occur.
Suffice it for me to say that: “… it’s a real pain in the butt.”
Can any of you recommend a solution to this problem? Have you ever experienced anything like this issue? Is it a software issue? Or, is it a conflict between two or more software applications? Does the problem occur because a file has been damaged? Is a piece of hardware causing this error? Have any of you experienced a similar set of challenges?
Coincidentally with this cursor error I have lost the ability to access my email account. My account exists and the email is in the account. But my laptop will not link to the mail servers (Yahoo and ATT.net). My Outlooklink to my email account does not work either.
My laptop is a LENOVO W500 ThinkPad.
My operating system is a Microsoft Vista Business 64, Service Pack 2 operating system.
My laptop is configured as follows:
    CPU: T9400 @ 2.53 MHz Core2 Duo Centrinos
Video card: ATI FirePro v.5700 with 512 MB
    Memory: DDR3 4GB.
Mice: HID and IBM ThinkPad Ultranav Trackpoint and Touchpad.
My antivirus and security software is as follows:
Antivirus and Internet Security software: AVG v. 11.0
    Malware Defenses: Malwarebytes
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Spyware Doctor
    Windows Defender
COuld you please advise me what the possible source or cause of thee issues is ?
    Thank you.

    HI, Ed and ~Bee —
Ed, a tiny complement — maybe — to ~Bee's successful solution...
I also use both an Apple Bluetooth and an older cordless LogiTech mouse. I keep them separated — except when I need to use the latter to help "re-connect" my Bluetooth mouse. I've noticed that if I forget and leave them near each other, my cursor begins to "skitter" something awful! Moving the LogiTech mouse a few feet away solves the problem.

  • Populating the screen field when the cursor moves to that field

    hi every one,
I want to populate the screen field(MODULE POOL) When the cursor moves to that field.
So can any one help me out with this.
    EXAMPLE..
I want to populate 'S10_TOT_PRICE' (Total Price). When the fields like 'S10_PIECES' (Number of Pieces) will be entered. I want to populate 'S10_TOT_PRICE'  without pressing any button on the screen nor when enter is hit. When the field 'S10_PIECES''  will be entered with some value and the cursor moves to 'S10_TOT_PRICE' . The Total Price field should be populated. Please help me out with this.

There are various ways in which users can interact with screens.
    Filling Input Fields
Users can enter values in any input field on the screen, or change the value using the mouse, in the case of radio buttons and checkboxes. The contents are placed in the corresponding screen field. Filling an input field does not normally trigger the PAI event. Exceptions to this are Checkboxes and Radio Buttons with Function Codes and input fields with Drop Down Boxes.</i>
So, i fear that you cannot "take hand" when user fill a numerical field to perform calculations and update the screen.

You are running Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. The program works just fine in Windows 8.1 64 bit when run Windows 8.1.
So do not go altering to another operating system. I know this first hand.
The immediate factor that needs ruling in or out is your video card/graphics card. Specifically "Does your Windows 8.1 64 bit use
a NVIDIA GeForce card? If so, that may be your answer. See Announcement at the top of this forum which describe the Premiere
Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce problem and gives the fix of how to roll back the card's driver version to get Premiere Elements 10
    to work for you.
Once we are assured that you are not afflicted by Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce syndrome and also know that your current
video card/graphics card driver is up to date, then we can move on to seek other factors that may be causing the problem.
For your convenience, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement about the issue as it appears at the top of this forum.
All the links and how tos that you will need are in this announcement.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches
specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then
the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The
typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA
nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1317675
Older NVIDIA GeForce drivers can be found

Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 - there be a good example. Seems to like the number 2. Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless. Does not start immediately upon turning on computer. Everything is okay from 10 to 20 minutes, then bang. Can deattach then attach keyboard and get a few moments of quiet. All this started today.

If the same erratic behavior occurs when the external KB and mouse are completely disconnected, I think it's time for a Genius Bar appointment to have the problem diagnosed.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
You'll probably want to get the machine revved up ahead of time so it's misbehaving when you walk in the door, rather than count on it to act up — or not — after you and the Genius have been standing around waiting for a while. (BTW, I'm assuming that once it starts acting up, it continues to do so until you give up and shut it down. Is that true?)

  • A small but very irritating bug in Mail: after pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word such as "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.

When composing an email in Mac Mail I've noticed a small but very irritating bug: pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word, e.g. "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.
    Any ideas?

I just recreated this problem on my iMac (wired KB, no wireless KB) by changing Mail > Preferences > Composing > Spellcheck from "as I type" to "never". Then type a contraction ending in 're and the space bar causes the cursor to jump back as others have stated, to the spot 'r|e
Next, I went into System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, and turned off "use smart quotes" and the problem went away again.
From this point (smart quotes off, spell checking never), if I turn Smart Quotes ON, the problem returns.
The problem is dependent on the state of both settings.
The spacebar in Mail "works" if I have either of the following setting combinations:
Keyboard: smart quotes OFF, Mail: check spelling ANY SETTING
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: check spelling AS I TYPE
    Other combinations FAIL
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check spelling NEVER
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check Spelling WHEN I CLICK SEND
Looks to me like there's a bug in Mail > Preferences > Check spelling > NEVER and WHEN I CLICK SEND that interacts badly with Keyboard > Smart quotes ON.
    Thanks.

    Hello Jim.
It's probably one of three things:
    #your mouse is getting old (this behavior is common in old optical mouses);
    #you have software that is making your mouse cursor behave unexpectedly (I know of an option in Windows that will automatically move your mouse to windows buttons...);
#or you may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

  • How to avoid built-up for "cursor move" events?

I have a rather complicated program where several graphs need to be interactively updated according to cursors using "cursor move" events. The problem is that the recalculation is relatively slow and the behavior is less than satisfactory. Since the cursor position needs to be "tweaked" until the result is as desired, I cannot recalculate only at the "Cursor Release" event.
Lock front panel=enabled makes cursor movements tedious because the cursor movements is very
jumpy and non-interactive. Not user friendly!
Lock front panel=disabled queues up way too many move events and once the cursor is released
the graph continues to jump and recalculate for ages.
The attached demo (LabVIEW 8.20) shows one solution attempt that actually works pretty well: Skip the recalculation unless the cursor position from the event terminal is equal to the cursor position of the graph property node. This basically races through all unecessary intermediary recalculations on stale positions. However, the code can get complicated very quickly if there are multiple cursors.
In my opinion, cursor move events should not get queued up! The event buffer should hold only exactly one entry:
the most recent cursor position for each cursor. Can anyone think of a scenario where the extra cursor position trail is useful? The positions are pretty random anyway, right?
Does anyone have other (better!) ideas how to work around this problem? I definitely want to keep it simple and not throw lots of code at it.
The attached demo contains more details. It demonstrates the problem if "selective updates" is checked. If unchecked, it implements the above mentioned workaround.

    Thanks for the example.
The more I think about this, I strongly prefer my original method. It uses minimal code compare to the other solutions offered here. As a demo, I am attaching an implementation to a slide control.
    Fo those without LabVIEW 8.20.
All slide events have "lock front panel" disabled.
TIme delay is 500ms, simulating some complex calculation.
As you can see, it works extremely well:
NO shift registers, extra loops, queues, tuning parameters (min times, etc.), etc.etc.
Just a deceptively simple "equal" followed by a case structure.
The demo shows a typical recording if I quicky move the slide up and down, then release it. You can see that the raw event structure takes more than 40 seconds to stabilize while my selective solution follows the slider position almost perfectly despite the 500ms stall in each update.
See for yourself! Can anyone think of a drawback of this method? Even if the slide terminal is not in the same loop, a comparison of a local variable with the newval should do the trick just fine.
