Cursor problems with new mac pro and cs4

I am having a major problem with my cursor in photoshop cs4 extended.
any tool i select as soon as i touch it to the canvas the tool turns to a black mac arrow cursor.
this is extremely annoying and makes brushing anything almost impossible as i can't see the edge of my brush because it turns to an arrow as i try to use it. (it starts out at the correct size before i actually brush with it)
i have my brush set as normal and precise tools are set but this problem happens with any brush and tool setting
I have tried turning off Open GL advanced redraw, all that.
I have the stock nvidia gt 120 - is it a video card problem? should i have gotten the ati 4870?
should i reinstall cs4?
my system is a base octo 2.26 with 6 GB ram - no scratch disk setup yet - waiting on the drives and more ram to come.
thanks all...

um...not to detract from the other users problem but mine has nothing to do with displacement of the cursor
i have uninstalled CS4 suite, reinstalled it, repaired permissions and deleted prefs.
I am still getting the arrow whenever I click the cursor with any tool to the canvas.
I am a pro p-shop retoucher - this is making CS4 essentially UNUSABLE - i will only be able to use CS3 and all this after I spent 600 for the "upgrade"?
I have to teach at a retouching seminar soon and i will have a very poor working knowledge of CS4 as a result
I can't find any similar complaints at nvidias site or on here
any help is still needed!

  • Ongoing problems with newest Mac Pro and CS4

    Hi all,
I've just switched from a Final Cut Pro editorial house to a new company that bases production around the Adobe Production Suite using Premiere Pro CS4 for all our editing needs. From what I understand about this company (and this workstation) is that Premiere Pro CS4 has been buggy on this machine and this machine only. I find this strange as it is one of the newer high end mac systems available right now and is more than capable of crushing most video that will be put into it.
    In brief a summary of the problems include;
1.) Final exports rarely work, no matter the codec, bit rate, size, duration, etc.
2.) If AME CS4 does manage to successfully export a piece it will generally have random black frames right at every cut starting about halfway through the piece.
3.) Even so much as switching sequences within a project manages to bog the system down and crash it, thus making me have to force quit the program and occasionally restart the machine.
4.) After rendering the work area the machine suddenly becomes unresponsive and thus causes another crash/force quit scenario.
5.) Certain audio tracks will play for about 2min and 30seconds and then mysteriously go silent, while a clear and present waveform is able to be seen (however occasionally premiere will cut this part of the clip off!)
I will post the hardware and software specs below but I feel it is necessary to detail why I find these problems to be extremely peculiar.
Firstly the projects we have are generally shot on the 5D MkII. I understand CS5 has the ability to play these clips back through it's mercury playback system (after it's own internal conform) at real-time and allow you to edit as if it had been transcoded traditionally. We are planning on obtaining a copy of CS5 in the near future but I am currently worried if these problems may be associated to faulty hardware.
Upon my arrival I formatted every drive and did a clean install of OSX Leopard 10.6.5 as well as a fresh install of Adobe Production Premium CS4 (updated to most recent release). This leaves out any possibility of a plug-in such as the red giant filters or sapphire filters interfering with the rendering and exporting process. Nothing seems to work. Even throwing an uncompressed 8-bit clip into AME CS4 manages to crash it.
A coworker of mine had two great ideas on the problem the other day for me to test out. The first being that it could be a bad piece of ram. I figure this could be a possibility as I don't know the history of this machine and I noticed all the RAM slots are full of 1gig sticks (and two 4gig sticks) so there could be a bad one in the bunch. I went through the process of elimination leaving one stick in at a time and testing an export (extremely time consuming) and every time it failed. His second idea was to take my project file and associated media to the creative directors computer which happens to be a two year old Mac Pro running CS4 (on OSX Leopard). He has several plug-ins installed along with tons of additional applications etc etc. Sure enough I loaded up my project file consisting of a bunch of 5D MkII footage and it played back perfectly, exported perfectly, tabbed through sequences perfectly, and did everything it should!
My question is why. Why would his older machine work with this footage on the same version of Premiere Pro CS4 and not my newer, faster, shinier editing machine? I've done everything I can to test any theory I've come up with both from my own experience as well as through internet research. Deleted PList, emptied RAM, emptied Cache, reformat and reinstall, swap RAM around, tested different hard drives, etc. The problem is not isolated strictly to the H.264 files the 5D MkII produces either, as even the uncompressed 8-bit files I've brought in won't play nicely with the system either. It's such a bummer that my first experience with Premiere Pro had to be on a machine that has these horrible quirks but I feel it has a lot to bring to the table over Final Cut Pro and I would love to find a solution to this problem so I can get back to cutting!!
Thank you in advance for all of your help!

The move from FCP to PP is a good one, however, it's only half way there.
Next, move to a Windows 7 64 based machine using an i7 950 and 12 GB RAM at a minimum (with a GTX 460 or better as a seriously considered option), and then upgrade to CS5.
Chances are more than excellent that doing will resolve all your issues.

  • Serious Problem with New Mac Pro! Please help!!

    Ok, long story short.
My Mac pro keeps crashing after I installed the latest 05-2007 security update. It seems to crash everytime I come back to the computer after the screensaver has been on for a while (its not the screensaver though) I reinstalled the newer v1.1 version of the update and I thought the problem had gone, but it hasnt as the computer just crashed again.
I cannot see any correlation to any other programs, and im 99% sure its not a hardware issue. It does not seem to relate to parallels, or the screensaver, or itunes, or anything!
And there is another crazy thing, when the computer restarts, it says that it recovered from a serious error and asks you to sumit a report, so i click the send report button and do you see a normal report window with all the code ? NO!!! Press report and the initial window just DISAPPEARS, nothing else happens!!! i.e it wont send the but to apple!! no wonder they haven't fixed it!!!
The history of the panic log is always the same error:

  • Display Problem with my Mac Pro and LG Flatron Wide Monitor in Mountain Lion

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my Mac Pro has display problems with my LG Flatron display.  The image is displayed with a black bar on the right and on the bottom.  And the left side of the content is not visible.  I tried every resolution available in the Display System Preferences, they are different in terms of how big the black bars are, and what part is not visible, but none of them are correct.  I held down the option key to try to detect displays or switch to resolutions that are not normally available.  When I restart the image is lined up with the display, but if the display ever goes to sleep or gets turned off, the image reverts to being off center, and the only way I can get it back is to restart...  The interesting thing is that this monitor works fine with the same machine if I reboot using BootCamp into Windows 7.  The Monitor also works fine, connecting the same connector to a Mac Mini, although that mac mini is running 10.6 and not Mountain Lion.  I've reset the SMC and restarted countless times, I don't see any other levers to pull or things to try...

That card is for a PC it may not give you Startup and Option-Boot screens.
The 7950 "Mac Edition" card has a very distinctive look:

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Davinci resolve render problem with new Mac Pro

    Hello,
we are having strange glitching effects (as shown in attachments) while exporting from DaVinci Resolve.
    The project is in 4K.
Maybe it is related to an heating issue? We have seen that it doesn’t manifests if we divide the exporting process into smaller chunks (single shots) but if we export the project all together after a while it comes up (like if it is correlated to the temperature of the graphic card).
    Details:
    Mac Pro (late 2013)

    DaVinci Resolve 11.1.1.006
    What should we do?
    Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same issue and to say that I'm FURIOUS is an EUPHEMISM!
This nightmare all started October 15th when I decide to make me a present and make my life easier upgrading my coloring gear with the "most powerful mac desktop" on the market.
After spending almost 11K not only I wasted time and money and lost clients but all this is still not over at today's date after a 3rd MAC PRO desktop replacement and after going through apple care to have my 2 D700 and logic board replaced on the last one!!!
Hours and hours of driving to the store, order a new replacement, wait days, reinstall drivers and softwares, render tests etc etc!!!
After hearing from the apple "genius" it definitely looks cool! there are people out there that make transparent enclosures!
It could look like an hairy armpit for what I care, I just want a machine that works for god sake!
Shame on you Apple! Shame on you Blackmagic! Advertising this machine and your software as the best combination out there for color grading!
    FIX IT NOW!

  • Movies grainy with new Mac Pro and 30"

I'm running a Mac Pro 2 x 3.0 GHz Quad with an OEM NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card and DVDs are grainy and lacking in color. The DVDs only look good if I reduce the window down to around 5 inches or so. Full screen is awful. The monitor is supposed to be a bit better than Apple's 30", I'm running a HP LP3065 - 30" I expected to be totally WOWed. Not even close...
Is it the monitor? The card? The Mac Pro?
    Thanks,
    Steven

    Steven Shmerler wrote:
The graphics cards that you can get at the Apple Store for the 30" boast they can run 2 - 30" screens. What on earth for? What is 2650 x 1600 good for?
    Steven,
Generally the higher resolutions are so you can get 'more' on a screen, but not necessarily 'bigger'. I'll use some poor examples (to keep the math simple for my old brain cells). Let's say I had a collection of photos, each 400 pixels wide and 300 pixels deep. If I had a 21" monitor (and let's assume the 20" is the width rather than the diagonal which is what the measurement actually relates to) with a height of 15" and it displayed at a resolution of 1200 x 900 pixels, I would get on that monitor 3 rows wide and 3 rows deep of photos (i.e. 400x300 three times). Physically, each picture would measure 7" wide and 5" deep.
Now let's take a second monitor with a resolution of 2,800 pixels wide and 2,100 pixels high. On the monitor I can now display seven photos across and seven photos down. To keep the pictures the same actual size as they were on the previous monitor, this new one would have to be 49" across and 42" deep.
If I displayed the original three by three grid on this new monitor it would have to enlarge each photo beyond its actual pixels and the quality would suffer accordingly.
People use larger monitors so they can see more of a document, an image, a video clip, whatever within one screen, but almost always what they look at is smaller than it would be on a lower resolution screen, although they see more without scrolling.
A 30" display will never display movies full size at the quality you are expecting.
TVs use different technology, but the principles still hold true. What BestBuy will be doing is making sure that what they display is high definition, whether this be cable TV channels or DVDs to show the best quality picture they can. This doubles the resolution of standard def. TV which looks mediocre on large TVs.
If watching movies is your prime need then you may well be better off with a smaller monitor with lower resolution.

  • Printing problems with new Macbook Pro and Canon I9900

I would like to know why my printed output on the Canon I9900 is showing up much darker than the image shown on the screen. I have installed the latest driver from Canon and am still having this problem. I have tried the different Colorsync profiles listed for the Canon and have not seen any improvement. I am using 4x6 matte paper by Kodak and have selected the correct paper type and settings.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi there,
I would like to know why my printed output on the
Canon I9900 is showing up much darker than the image
    shown on the screen.
The answer to your question is simple; colour on a monitor is made differently than colour on a printed image. Monitors combine Red, Green and Blue (RGB) in a process called Additive colour while printers use Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) with a process known as Subtractive colour. The matching of what you see on the screen to what you get printed is a time consuming (and expensive) process and often subject to a users preference.
For the home user this process is often too complicated. If you accept that what you see is not what you will get then half the battle will be won. However, that doesn't mean that you cannot get good output on your printer. A number of applications give you the ability to adjust your output. You just need to experiment with a number of settings to get a 'workflow' that you prefer. If you can tell me which application you are using to print from I may be able to offer some values that will help.

  • Big problem with new Mac Pro

Last night I left my computer to do some work, I set it to no sleeping but turn off the monitor. This morning I couldn't get any video feed from my computer, so I had to force it to shutdown. Now I try to turn it on and it won't boot completely into OS X. I see the Apple logo and then a sky blue screen but it just stops there. I tried to boot into the DVD installer that came with my system and the same thing! It will not boot into it completely! Stuck at blue screen. What's going on?

One thing I have learned over the years, a severely corrupt directory on a drive will prevent booting. Why? because even a CD/DVD still will try to read and mount the drive and detect other system volumes.
As a test, pull the drive and try rebooting. Then install OS X to another drive if you don't currently have a bootable clone.
Disk Warrior preventative maintenance or at first sign of trouble is pretty much a 'must.'

Do you have Parallels installed by any chance?  There is a known problem that causes symptoms similar to this.  You do not need to actually be running Parallels at the time and nothing in ActivityMonitor would point to Parallels.  An update corrects the problem:

  • Odd Wireless Mighty Mouse  behavior with new Mac Pro?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac pro and Wireless Apple Mighty Mouse & Keyboard.
The mouse however is not operating properly, it is jerky and slow to respond on a intermittent regular basis. I can move the cursor around the screen but it will stutter and jerk slowly then pick up ok?
I had the mouse and keyboard with my iMac and it worked fine. I have run all updates and re-installed but to no avail. The keyboard is fine.
I suspect it's a hardware issue with my new mac Pro but i'd love it if someone has any other possible causes.
    Thanks.

Hi, there's a quite a few people with similar problems, including myself.
My keyboard likes to drop it's connection for no apparent reason, which in turn likes to mess up my mouse and cause it to stutter for a while. Pairing up new devices can do this too, I've found.
It's been thought that some Mac Pro's came with their WiFi and BT wires incorrectly fitted, if you have a search you should find a link to the tutorial if you want to try switching them around.
That said, it didn't make any difference to my BT keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, so I switched them back.
I've been hoping for a software fix, but no joy so far, glad I got a three year warranty as standard.

    Hi Folks,
I have a new MAc PRo and just loaded final cut studio 2 and flash 8 onto it.. I know have no option in the quicktime conversion setting to export to FLV?
Please any help would be huge at this point...
Oh.. I loaded After Effects 7 to the new Mac PRo and I get the Export to FLV option from AE so what is the deal?

Hi Todd, I bet you upgraded from a PPC machine.
The real problem here is that Flash 8 is/was not a universal binary (i.e. an app that is supported on both the PPC and the Intel Macs).
So the included "FLV Exporter" QuickTime component does not show up in the export dialog even if it's installed as it just does not get loaded.
    (Should be in "NameOfSystemHD/Library/QuickTime").
If you update to Flash 9/CS3 you get a universal binary app and QT exporter component and it will work again on your (Intel) Mac Pro.
Btw., the Flash support that was in QuickTime had nothing to do with export - especially not with FLV - but with playback of Flash content.
Addionally, AE 7 isn't a universal binary either, so you will suffer some pretty serious performance losses.
    Best regards, Oliver

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter

It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • After having yet another problem with my MacBook Pro and having to wipe the drive, I am now unable to sync my iPhones etc without erasing all the music on them. Is there a way around this? I have no other library!

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • I have a new mac pro and can't get a side scroll bar.  What can I do to get this?

I have a new mac pro and can't get a side scroll bar.  How can I get this?

The scroll bar is now set to appear automatically when you start scrolling with a trackpad or scroll wheel mouse. If you are using an mouse without a scrolling device, you should change a setting.
In System Preferences, click General, and in the Show Scroll Bars section, click the option for how you want it to work. If you want to see them all the time click "Always."
