Curtain of Death?

I have gone through most of the Discussion boards & could not find anything related to my issue. My MBP is 3 1/2 yrs old & works fine. However, twice last night a semi transparent curtain came down & said I need to shut down using the power button & then restart. I did that (no other option) & then it happened again a while later. What is going on? It this considered the "curtain of death"?
The battery is fine & is still NORMAL. I am out of warranty now. Should I take it in to an authorized dealer?

My machine was patched to date 10.x.x.  I was lucky to get an internet connection and I selected the option to re-download Lion... its curruently being downloaded.  What if that doesn't work?
    Any thougths would be appreciated.

And you have a workstation? not a notebook.
Usually a driver or hardware, nothing that Disk utility will fix.

dude I was just having this problem. its a nightmare i know.
what system are you running specifically? all the specs lol. and then what os are you running?
I was having a kernel panic just about every time I booted up. I did a fresh install on my 2nd hard drive. not just a reinstall or an update but a completely new install. after that i ran the disk repair and repair permissions out of the disk utility. come to find out i had an incomplete install of leopard running so every time i tried to update or use safari it freaked out.
try that if you can I sure hope it helps. since it sounds like u tried removing all other peripherals and extra hardware.

  • Curtain of death after months of use

Hi folks hope all is well . After several months wit the Mac pro i am STILL getting these curtains of death and it is really getting to me. I am very reluctant to start all over and reformat this thing. If i do than i will wait for leopard than do it but in the meantime there must be a way to solve this issue. One thought is it is trying to connect with Idisk which is not on my desktop anymore but in my preferences but here is the latest console crash report. I have Tech tools Pro and also Tiger cache cleaner. Just wondering if there is a program to find the issue and solve it. Not sure how to read this crash. Here it is

While I've not come across issues with doing updates using wireless network connection I would suggest that you do what works for you. I find that most issues are avoided if you…
    1) Repair disk permissions before and after any update
    2) Use the combo updater rather than a delta updater that is offered by Software Update
    3) Don't immediately update and wait to see what, if any, issues arise with others
    4) Clone immediately before an update so if things go wrong you're covered

I recieved Tech Tools Pro and I will install that and test the whole system and maybe I can get this straightened out

Generally speaking, if I can't fix a system within the first hour or so of trying then I'm normally better off, time-wise, by biting the bullet and going with a clean install. Granted it has probably cost be time a few time although it straight out playing the odds. After a serious first hour attempt the odds of finding, and also being able to rectify, any problem goes down dramatically after this time. So, spending 2 more hours trying to find and fix a problem is normally 2 hours more for me to finish doing a clean install.
Like you, I realise that any time spent doing this sort of thing is time out of your life you aren't going to get back again.

Try trashing the Finder preferences which you will find at ~/Library/com.apple.finder.plist. The best way to do it is to do a restart, wait a bit, just drag it to the trash then restart again.

  • 2006 iMAC intel core duo Kernel Panic + Black Curtain of Death

I've had this iMAC since 2006 w/o a problem. Lately been getting the "curtain of death" and screen to restart the computer. Saw similar discussions about these Kernel Panics. Brought the iMAC to Apple Store and tech thought it was a bad logic board and recommended not to fix it ($800+). I have trouble, as did the tech getting it to boot. Today I got it to boot and before it crashed again, I managed to run the Hardware Test from the original OS disc 1. This showed no problem in both tests. Did get the panic log (see below) can anyone make heads or tails of this? Thanks

If you attempt to boot from an external HD that is set up as a bootable clone and it fails to boot that almost certainly points to the Mac having a hardware. The bootable clone would have had to be setup prior to the failure. Many people (myself included) keep redundant backups, I would recommend doing the same when you have either repaired or replaced the current machine. Macworld runs articles where users describe their own backup strategies, I'd recommend reading them and then deciding which works best for your needs.

  • Unusual crash occurence - Curtain of Death

After transferring my data from my iMac G5 20" PPC (Tiger 10.4.11) to my brandnew Intel machine, something weird began happening with the old machine. Without warning, a curtain-like gray screen - just like a theatre curtain at the end of an opera - descends with a text message in four languages - English, French, German and Chinese (I think) - ordering me to power off the computer. This machine is four years old and while it has had its crashes over, this has never happened before.
My first thought was virus. My second, well I have none. There was a lot of traffic between the old and new machines, and I used a CD and USB stick to move some ad hoc files after ending the bulk migration, but I can't make any sense of this. I can reinstall all the software, that's not the problem, but wonder if this might be a firmware, battery, something that has appeared coincidentally with the migration.
Oh, one more thing. Desktop icons don't seem to work now. I reinstalled the last Tiger update at that didnt change anything.
Anyone have any ideas on either issue?

This can be due to hardware or software. Often it is hardware but if you were transferring any files that affect the system then it could be a software problem. Were you really only transferring data files? Migrating from a PPC to an Intel Mac requires special steps.

  • Getting a "curtain of death".

Intel iMac freezes and curtain comes down with "you need to restart message". Works for a while then the curtain comes down again.

This is a kernel panic.  To learn about kernel panics visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.  We cannot help much without seeing the panic log.  See this article: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Post the log here to see if anything in the log helps to diagnose the cause.

  • Descending Gray Curtain of Death

Over the past few weeks I have been increasingly experiencing a non-recovery reboot message. It happens with no consistency or discernible pattern (at least that I have been able to ferret out).
What occurs is that, without warning, a transparent gray overlay descends over my display and a dark gray box with the power button in the background appears in the center. The white text in this box informs me in 4 languages (English, French, German, and Japanese) "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
When I hold down the power button, the system powers down, of course. I power it back up and the Apple message that the computer was rebooted without warning appears and asks me to send a report to Apple. I have on more than several occasions done that, describing what I was doing just prior to this gray screen of descending death appearing. I haven't been able to find this described anywhere, but has anyone else seen this and what can be cause? Norton Antivirus scan reveals nothing.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

    A. You have a Kernel Panic
    http://www.google.com/search?q=mackernelpanics
    B. Don't use Norton AV with 10.5.3, if you must, make sure you have v. 11
    http://www.symantec.com/norton/products/overview.jsp?pcid=ma&pvid=nav11mac
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/security/index.html
Most kernel panics are hardware related, RAM, USB devices and even cables, sometimes software.
More important than "permissions" is repair the boot drive directory, but there are a number of links to FAQs on K/Ps from Google result.

  • Mac Pro DVD Drive "Perma Sleep" - Any thoughts?

I have a MacPro with the following DVD drive in it:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:
    Firmware Revision: AB09

This morning I was burning a CD-R from iTunes. The burn finished and the system locked up with the "curtain of death".
Upon reboot I found that the DVD drive will spin at boot up, will eject from the keyboard, but it does not respond to any disc inserted in it. When inserting a disc, there is no spin up, no response from the system. I have inserted:
    - Blank CD-R
    - Blank DVD-R
    - Recorded CD-R
    - Purchased (factory made) CDs and DVDs
none of which respond. In response I have attempted:
    - Resetting the machine, left it un- plugged for several hours, still not working
    - Resetting the PRAM by booting with CMD-OPT-P-R
    - Facing towards Cupertino and offering a bowl of corn flakes as snackrafice
None of which worked. Any thoughts, or is it take it to be repaired time?
    Thanks
    Bruce

Sounds like it is toast. You can get an immediate replacement at the Apple store. DIY replacement is very easy. OWC has a video on how. You can also find a replacement at a greatly reduced price from Newegg or OWC, but the immediate gratification will be missing during shipping. If it's under warranty, the Apple store should give you a new one, or I think they should and not have you wait for one to be shipped or require you to bring in your MP. Thes things are heavy!

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • Boot Camp causes Kernel Panics on Startup

    Hi all,
I just purchased a new MBP. I had installed everything and transferred all of my files from my previous notebook (via Time Machine). System was working very well.
I wanted to install a windows partition via boot camp. used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 50GB partition (leaving >200GB of free space on my main partition) for windows 7. Installed this perfectly fine.
Started up OS X again, and was using that for the rest of the day. Played a game in Boot Camp for an hour or so just now. Now, every time I try to boot to my OS X (10.6.4) partition, it kernel panics. Grey curtain of death.
I booted into the backup disc, and repaired the drive using Disk Utility. This found some errors and supposedly fixed them. Permission repair went likewise. Still no luck booting into OS X (but I can use the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 partition just fine).
While trying to resolve this issue, I tried to reinstall OS X over the partition that would not boot up. Erased ONLY that partition and tried to install. Install appeared to work fine, but when not booting from the CD (after the installation finished) it panicked again.
The only way to resolve the issue was to completely repartition the drive and reinstall OS X.
Has anyone else had this problem, and resolved it? I would really like to be able to use boot camp...

I would recommend cloning your system to another drive in addition or instead of using TimeMachine so you have a bootable backup. Also for booting from to run repairs, and if/when you turn to 3rd party disk repair programs like Disk Warrior.
I suspect it has more to do with 10.6.4.
Did you install the Apple SETUP drivers and such in Windows 7? the Boot Camp 3.0.x and 3.1? your OEM DVD has those, and likely has more current than what was provided last year even.
Panics are often external USB cables, devices, RAM, but hardware, and sometimes from drivers. But I doubt it has to do with Windows 7.

  • Dying Mac Pro

My Old Mac Pro Dual 2.6 has an intermittent boot up failure.
It ends up giving me the "curtain of death" after trying to boot up..The grey curtain comes down from the screen top and tells me I have to restart.
I've pulled extra ram, removed hard drives, run Disk Utilities and been able to boot up with a my old install disk and run a file check on the HD and it shows the drive needs no repairs.
I've changed the Pram Battery and zapped it a few times too.
After running the install disk utility..it usually starts up and runs fine without locking up. But as soon as I power down and restart using the HD...the "curtain of death" falls once again.
The display screen whoch used to be white...now has some weird pattern under it too and is not pure white anymore.
I've taken out the video card and cleaned it off to get rid of any dust inside if that may have caused th problem.  It didn't fix it.
    Ideas/ Suggestions???
    Ideas, suggestions?

    http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d13/drshame/FrozenSplitApple_zpse46e831c.jpg
I now cannot even get the MacPro to boot with the original OSX Disk.
It freezes on a "Split Apple Screen"...with the Apple Logo and statrup timer split vertically and frozen.
If you can see the image I am trying to post..it shows this effect and you can also see the  weird squiggling lines in the background across the screen too.
I'm guessing it could be a video card failure. It gets pretty warm to the touch after a few start-up tries.
If I ever get it started again, I'll try and pull the panic codes from the log.
Any other ideas? Won't start from an external drive either.
