Curve battery life.

I've had my Blackberry Curve for nearly a year now, and played brickbreaker a lot. When I got my high score of 330,000+ with 70 lives my blackberry froze and an auto restart was neccesary wiping out all the data for the game. Ever since then my the game has been extremely choppy, and the battery life has drastically dropped. A week ago it began to freeze citing 'Voice Dialing search....' as the culprit. I keep it in standby mode when not using it, and have never tried to voice dial. Now, even when I send 5 texts and keep it in standby mode  while at work all day the battery still goes dead to 10% after 12 hours. Neither Bluetooth or any internet connection is enabled  Do I need a new battery, or is there something that I can do to fix it?

I think what I would do next is make a backup of the device using Desktop Manager.  Then do a security wipe of the device.  Go to Options >Security Options >General Options >menu key: Security Wipe (if you're using OS 5.0 then it's under Options >Security Options >Security Wipe.)
The wipe will remove all your data.  While the backup will have all your data, one thing that is not backed up is high scores in BrickBreaker :-(
Once the wipe is done, try using it for a while before restoring your data and see if the battery drains as quickly.  If it does, then you know it's not something in the software and maybe a new battery is needed.  If the battery seems to be back to normal, then you know it's something in one of your settings.
Go ahead and restore your backup and see what happens after that.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Given your description, I'd deduce low/poor signal from your mobile service provider. Digital devices modulate their power consumption depending on the strength of signal they receive from the carrier tower. Lower signal strength/quality, higher battery drain. To firmly check that, you need to contact your mobile service provider as it's there network that is the cause. It is possible that they have some problems in the areas you are in.
You could also attempt to boot into Safe Mode, so as to suppress all 3rd party apps from auto-launching (even if you don't see them in the AppSwitcher ribbon, they can be running):
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

  • Curve 9300 Battery Life and CPU Discovery

    Carrier: AT&T
    Model: Curve 9300 3G / Wi-Fi
    OS Version: 6.0 Bundle  2342  v 6.0.0.526 Platform 6.6.0.195
Since downloading 6.0 on 6/21 (two days ago), I have been having NUMEROUS issues with my BB Curve 9300 retaining battery as well as having the timer spin and stick.
I had only been using my phone to text or send emails, and had the wi-fi off, and even changed my screen to 20 backlight with 10 seconds, no vibration, and anything else I have read to see if that helped with battery life.  The battery was draining at lighting speed, and I could not find the reason why.  I think I may have found the culprit.
This morning, I took the battery out for five minutes and let it re-boot.  That seemed to work great most of the day.  Then a couple of hours ago I started to have the same issues again.   I searched around on my phone and was able to find CPU usage, which revealed something very interesting that hopefully someone can explain on here:
I went to Options - Device - Application Management.  Then I scrolled sideways to get to the CPU Usage area.  I let that sit and watched it for a few minutes.  What I found was that my "Phone" app (part of 6.0) was running at a very high CPU on and off when I wasn't even using the phone.  For instance, yesterday, I MAYBE spoke on my phone for 15 minutes total, tops.  The CPU shows that the "Phone" had 5Hr9M of use.   Today, I probably spoke for 30 minutes total.  It shows for today CPU is 7h18m.  How is this possible?  Just on the screen 2 seconds ago, and it went from 0% to 96% CPU usage for the "Phone".  What is doing this?  I believe that this app is draining my battery life.    Anyone else have this issue?  How can this be resolved?  I hate this new 6.0 and hadn't downloaded it for my BB until two days ago, and totally regret it.  Please help if anyone has any ideas here?

I downloaded 6 on my 9300 about 2 weeks ago, have had the same problem with draining battery fast, i hardly ever use my "phone". I use to get atleast 2 days with some left over on a charge, now it hardly last 8 hrs and I have to limit what I'm doing.
I just discovered all that cpu stuff last nite and was looking at it, I will have to see what it says my phone app is doing?
I just on my post yesterday and today got instructions on how to go back to os5, cuz I am completely not happy with 6, I do like the apps and layout of it, but just cant deal with no battery!

  • BlackBerry Curve 8520 Battery life issue and Loading icon

Hello, I have an issue with my BlackBerry Curve 8520, the problem is that it has extremely low battery life and half the time it has the loading circle thing in the middle, I first thought it was my batteries fault but after buying a new battery the loading circle thing still comes up but not as much but the battery life is still extremely low (locked or on standby whatever its called it lasts around 2-3 hours, Ive turned off my bluetooth and the problem still remains please help!

Anthony (or anyone else monitoring this thread):
So, what was the outcome of the troubleshooting session with "windycity"?
I don't have a problem with a mysterious icon; however, the anemic battery issue is exactly as windycity described: new charged-up Samsung Haven phone is on; no calls in or out; no text messages either; however, in slightly less than 24 hours, the Haven goes from having a fully-charged battery to one that's dead, or just about.
Like windycity, I bought this simple phone for my father, who just wants a phone he can make voice calls with, nothing more.
However, the sad peformance of this phone+battery has not helped me in my campaign to at least get him to dip his toes into the digital stream -- in fact, he wants me to take it back and cancel the plan!
I'd really rather not do that, but we'll need some kind of resolution to this problem first.

  • BlackBerry Curve 8530 battery life

i got my BB Curve a month ago and it's battery has always draind. like i charge it for about 4-5 hours everynight and by like 12-1 p.m. the next day it down to like 30% battery life. i dont text that much and only go on to facebook, bbm, or the internet unless i have to and that hardly ever happens.
is there something wrong with my battery or phone?

    Hi,
Tips to avoid battery drain  :
    1) Bluetooth (Chk if it is turned off)
    2) Low signal strength ( If the signal strength is low the device will consume alot of battery in order maintain the signal strength)
    3) Unwanted applications running in background  (Hunt for such applications and close them as they would sucking the battery life.
    4) Optimize your screen brightness to increase battery life.
    5) Follow a regular charge and discharge cycle of the battery.
    Thanks,
    Rohit

  • Battery life is reduced

Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and I hope you can help. I have a Curve 8900 which I have had for around 18 months with good battery life. About 8 weeks ago it started to fade quickly and not last long at all. I thought the battery had run its course so purchased a new genuine battery, fully charged and discharged at least 10 times and is no better than the one it replaced. It even runs flat from full when switched off for a couple of days.
My network provider is orange although it was BT but the problem started before this.
I also get email on the phone.
I hope this is enough info.
    Thanks for your help.

Discharging the battery continuously is not recommended for these Lithium Ion type batteries.

  • Battery life suddenly decreased and consistently getting the "clock" symbol for up to 10 or more minutes at a time !

I recently noticed a dramatic decrease in my Blackberry Curve 9300's battery life. Several days ago, it went from lasting all day to only lasting a few hours. I have also noticed that I get the "clock" symbol appearing on the screen even if I'm not using the phone --- and it stays on the screen for up to 10 minutes or more at a time ! I will look at the phone to get the time and I see that it hasn't updated for 10-15 minutes and the clock symbol is running the entire time. When it finally does disappear, the phone seems to work like it always has ---- but I'm worried that I've either picked up a virus or have somehow activated something that is draining my battery and memory resources rapidly. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated ! P.S.. I'm a relatively new Blackberry user --- switched from iPhone about 6 months ago......so still learning about how the device works and how to troubleshoot ! THANKS !
p.s.  I have looked to see if any apps are running in the background and found nothing out of the ordinary.

    Hi CollinGCC78,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • How To Extend Droid X Battery Life

The 4.3" LCD screen is the main component consuming battery life.
Google/Motorola may want to look into a more intelligent display management software for large 4.3" LCD screen.
Example: Stay on when plugged into a recharger and turn off display when on battery.
Display turns off sooner as battery life diminishes.
Something like stay on maximum of 5 mins when battery is 100% and scale down to 1 minute for under 20% or something like that.
Linear scale or curved scaled or something.

Hey, hope everyone can read this,... For some reason I seem to be unable to post a normal response.
One thing that is apparent with the battery of the 9700 is that the battery actually gets extremely warm on occasions when charging. Originally I thought that it was just when I charged via USB cable but I have since discovered that it is random (could be either wall charging or USB charging). When the battery gets too hot it doesn't retain the same sort of battery as otherwise (i.e. it lasts anywhere less than 7 hours before needing a charge). Other times it seems to last 3-4 days using multiple applications.
Additionally, I was all old fashioned when I got my 9700 (beginning of 2010) and so I decided to charge my battery to full. This hasn't made any difference to me... Occasionally I have good battery life and something I have really really really really really bad battery life (the one time I charged my battery full before I went to sleep, I was woken up with my phone turning off due to lack of battery and nothing was running in the background... This was due to the heat generated from the charging). Nothing to do with the initial charge... That was, as someone said, a 1999 retarded and stupid phenomenon. We have subsequently had advances in technology (yes, believe it or not but a lot changes in 11 years) and as such battery 'memory' no longer exists in the same sense as it did before.
Bottom line, if you didn't discharge your battery completely and then completely recharge it again it won't make a difference. It would have many many many many years ago and some people will still say it is the case. Listen to them if you would like to be sure but the only difference is the time it will take before you can use your device.

  • Horrible Battery Life

Up until a week ago my Curve would go about 4 days on a charge. Now it won;t last 24 hours.  I have 3 different batteries now, 1 fresh out of the package and they all have the same life, less than 24 hours.  There are no applications running other than the 5 that are always running and there is nothing open in the browser.  Any ideas?

Don't let it die. Full and constant battery depletion is not recommended for these battery types.
Here are some good charging tips, please read and you'll see that many of them will apply to you.

  • 3g iPod battery life and hard drive head...

    Hi all!
I have a 3G 20GB iPod, and sometimes the battery drains itself out even with a brand new battery and the iPod being shut off.
I can barely get 4-5 hours of playing time, no backlight, equaliser, and no songs skipping.
I found out that you can hear the head of the hard disk moving even when the iPod is turned off. One of my relative has a 3G 15GB iPod and she's experiencing the exact same problem of battery life, and her iPod's hard drive make's the exact same noise. And she also has a brand new battery.
So can you listen to your iPod, (even between times when the iPod has stored the data to it's RAM the head of the hard drive is still making some kind of movement) and tell me what you think.
I've tried to install all previous versions of iPod software to no avail.
For now I have completely erased the drive with "zero all" along with a surface test by Tech Tool Pro, and it seems to have made a difference.
Time will tell, post your observations and I will keep you posted.

The largest detractors for battery life are the obvious ones like backlight usage, anything that makes the HDD seek (FFW, skip track, etc...) using EQ, and volume. There are many other areas but most are pretty minor. Alot of it actually depends on the chip that regulates energy to the player. Supposedly we will be seeing new chips that double or triple battery life on these mp3 players in the near future but we shall see.
Hard disk is by far the biggest user, backlight uses some (but you wouldn't have the backlight on, and it's not good for the life of the EL panel either). EQ seems to have issues on some players where it uses far too much power in my opinion, specifically the Smart Volume function. I hope Creative can address the power demands of this if possible. Creative managed to double the base battery life of the Touch with the changes they made in some of the hardware, so greater li'ves are definitely achievable.
Rich_T: I've used your excellent test data as the start of a battery curve graph I'm putting together. I'm taking Creative's benchmark data and anything else I see to try and create curves for the players under different circumstances. I think once we have a base curve for one circumstance we can probably extrapolate it to all the other players, at least as a guess.
If anyone at Creative has any battery life figures for different scenarios (which I would be amazed if they didn't) it would be very useful

Over the last few days, the battery life on my brand new curve has reduced. I get barely 2 hours on standby before the battery goes flat. There are no apps running and I havent installed any. What applications are running in the background on your device?
Check your applications running in the background. There are commonly five applications that will always be running (Messages, Call Logs/Phone, BlackBerry Messenger, Homescreen, and the Browser; there are other third party applications such as BeeJive, and BlackBerry Alerts which will also run in the background which you cannot close if you want them to operate). Make certain that the browser is NOT on an active webpage (open the browser and choose Menu > Close). Close any other applications that do not need to be running (the camera or a game you were playing or Google Maps).

  • Possible Internet Tethering/Battery Life Issue

When either Cellular Data is turned Off, or Airplane Mode is turned On, Internet Tethering (Settings>General>Network) appears to have some process that runs continually in the background (evident by continuously spinning wheel next to the option). The running process has a demonstratively negative impact on battery life (1/3 reduction in ~ 30 mins). The Apple Genius at my local Apple Store and I verified the issue on numerous iPhone 4s that were on display. Turning Cellular Data On and ensuring the phone is not in Airplane Mode stops the activity. But obviously that defeats the purpose of having those options.
So if you are experiencing poor battery life, this might be your issue.
