Curve is messed up

Hey guys,
I've had my curve for quite some time now and just a few days ago it decided to crap out on me. The phone "works" but I can't work anything on the phone. The trackball scrolls while the screen is on but I can't click and the keyboard doesn't work. I've tried doing many things with the battery in and out with no success. As it sits I'm missing about 50 messages and 10 phone calls so it's pretty important I get it back up and running.
I've tried using the guides on how to fix it for the windows desktop manager but have had no success. Does anyone have any experience with this on the Mac OS?

Dear Eric,
I have Photoshop/Bridge CS3 and Camera Raw Version 4.5.0.175 on Windows XP (SP2).
To "see" tone curves I launch Bridge, navigate to a folder, double-click a raw or DNG file and get the ACR window.
In the ACR window, I click on the "Camera Calibration" tab and navigate through the various Camera Profiles.
For each profile, I click on the "Tone Curve" tab and view both the "Parametric" and "Point" curves.
For canon 5D Mark II DNG files there is always a "Medium Contrast" Point Curve, under every camera profile. I do not have a Canon 1Ds Mark III, but I have downloaded a sample raw file and converted it to DNG. For this DNG I also see a Medium Contrast Point Curve under every profile.
For my Canon 20D and Canon 1Ds raw or DNG files the Point and Parametric curves are flat under every camera profile.
When I downloaded the latest DNG converter and DNG Profile Editor, I'm reasonably confident I also downloaded and installed the most current camera profiles.
For Canon 5D2 files I see the following profiles: Adobe Standard, Camera Faithful, Camera Landscape, Camera Neutral, Camera Portrait, and Camera Standard, in that order.
For the Canon 1DS Mark III image I see all those profiles, plus ACR 4.4 and ACR 4.3
For Canon 20D files I see all those profiles, plus ACR 4.4 and ACR 2.4
To make sure I'm not picking up any presets, I have invoked the pop-up menu in ACR and selected "Reset Camera Raw Defaults". Then, for each file viewed in ACR I checked the pop-up menu again to make sure "Camera Raw Defaults" was checked.
And a reminder, all this was after I had created a number of custom profiles from Macbeth Color Checker images using the DNG Profile Editor. Those custom profiles created a problem with Bridge previews, so I removed all of them before viewing Point Curves as described above. Still hoping to get some feedback on the Bridge preview problem I described in this message:

  • Any way to temporarily ignore smart guides while using the pen tool?

I'm having a hate and love relationship with Smart Guides. When I want them they're bad; when I don't they're good.
While trying to do some things with the pen tool, I am frequently faced with the smart guides snapping my tool around without my wanting it snapped. I'm not really that good with the pen tool yet, so it's making an uphill climb even harder when they interfere.
Now I know that I can disable smart guides by doing Ctrl-U, but this has the side effect of releasing my pen from the current curve I'm working on. When I click the end of that curve to start where I left off it changes the anchor to a corner instead of curve and messes up what I was going on. This wouldn't be such a problem except that I sometimes want the guides while I'm still on the same curve so I don't want to fully disable them as I'm working and then have to re-enable to fix a spot, know what I mean?
So, is there a key I can hold down to temporarily turn disable smart guides or ignore them in some way? I've hit quite a few keys trying this out so I'm guessing no. This probably indicates I just need to improve my skill to learn how to work with this best.

At least up to Illustrator 13, there is a trick or rather a lousy hack that involves the Snap to Grid command and its talent to temporarily disable any Smart Guides functionality. The following has to be prepared in case you're going to execute the hack as an action:
    1. In the Actions Palette, create a new Action set. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides'.
    2. Within the Action set, create a new action. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides', assign an F-key to the action, let's say F3, and hit Enter.
    3. In the Actions Palette menu, select the Insert Menu Item command and go to View > Snap to Grid
    4. Stop recording the action
    5. Go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid
    6. In the Gridline Every text box, enter 0,01 mm. It's the minimum value you can set here.
    7. In the Subdivisions text box, enter 1000, the max. value accepted here.
Now, take any document, turn on Smart Guides, make sure Snap to Grid is turned off, and start drawing a path. Hit F3 and continue drawing the path. Hit F3 again as soon as you need your Smart Guides again.
As you can see, after hitting F3 to enable Snap to Grid, the path will not be interrupted when placing the next point. And as you've got a kind of microscopic Grid settings, Snap to Grid has almost no influence on where the points are placed. In fact, it still snaps, but due to the absurd Grid settings it's rather negligible.

  • Choppy Video w/Quicktime Hardware Acceleration Unchecked

In every other application (PowerDVD, WinDVD. TMPG DVD Author, etc.) videos play smoothly without enabling hardware acceleration. In iTunes (7.6.1.9), I must enable the hardware acceleration checkbox in Quicktime to allow smooth playback, However, this compromises video quality. The gamma curve seems messed up, black levels are too high and music videos have a general "washed out" appearance. Playing the same video in Quicktime itself is perfectly smooth with hardware acceleration unchecked and the video quality looks great. Since iTunes uses the Quicktime engine, I do not understand why this is happening?
I've put in a support request to Apple but no resolution, just the usual suggestions to download the latest nVidia drivers (done), uninstall/reinstall (done), etc. Same results on fast Ultra320 SCSI drive or Serial ATA drive.

I would try rolling back to an older version of flash. I think some if the recent releases of flash have been ultra buggy. I have quite a powerful laptop cpu/gpu and recent versions of flash are a bit choppy for me too. This forum has had a huge increase in posters with problems. Video should pose no problem for a computer even if it is a few years old.

  • Headphones messing up handset audio - Curve 8520

After owning my Blackberry Curve 8520 for 8 months - I had my first issue when I plugged in the headphones that come std with the device. Once I unplug the headphones - the handset audio is completely messed up. When you dial out, receive a call, or listen to music - all you hear is a clicking sound as for some reason the sound toggles between headset and handset (the headphone logo  flashes on and off in the top left hand corner of the screen). It's utter BS.
Seriously - what is the issue with the headphones on a blackberry?
I've seen so many posts on this very issue in this forum that are unresolved - can someone from RIM not just take some responsibility and tell us why it causes the sound to go postal? Perhaps suggest a solution!
And no,  the following don't work:
Taking out the battery and rebooting 1-3 mins later.
Plugging and unplugging the headphones repeatedly until it stops going mental.
Clicking activate handset on the menu when listening to audio or taking a call
Bascially now I can only use my phone when i have heaphones in - which is LESS THAN IDEAL.
    Any other solutions?

I have an 8520 and got the dreaded clicking sound when calling where the 8520 screen flips between the headset and handset audio features making phone calls unworkable. I resolved the problem by inserting the headsort cable, pressing 1 for voicemail and then when the call started pulled out my headset jack from the phone and the problem disappeared. It happened randomly so I can't tell you exactly when I yanked out the jack, but it worked and not the problem has disappeared.

  • CS4 Text around a bottom curve but text straight up and down?

I have to change the names on bottles that were shot and so I am trying to type the names. 1st I tried Photoshop and could not get the 3D to work and could not get the arc or the warp to work correctly.
So I went over to Illustrator. I finally got it figured out how to get the text on the bottom of the curve and reading corectly... BUT... the text on the R side of the curve, curves into the curve instead of each letter staying straight up and down horizontally. Help please? Nothing like being short on time and having to figure out how to get the text on a curve with the letters staying straight up and down instead of curving into the curve. Thank you!!!

OK. I did that but now I am trying to copy paste into my Photoshop file but when it comes out of Illustrator... It brings an odd white box that is really messing me up!!! Why won't it let me just copy the text? Why is Illustrator making an extra white box that is blocking my image? Thanks. See the 2 below.  1 is the bottle before I have gotten the name over and the other, is the bottle when I am trying to paste just the text in place. For some reason, Illustrator is adding a white box that is messing me up?  1 is how it should look. 2 is Illustrator is making an extra white box that is covering up most of my bottle.

  • I am having a problem with my Blackberry Curve's "Convenience Keys."

My Convenience Keys (voice command and camera) randomly stopped working! When I try to use the voice command (even after troubleshooting), it does not respond at all and the camera asks me to close all other applications in order for it to operate! What can I do to fix these two "Convenience Keys?" I have not changed any of my options and I have not dropped my phone. (As a matter of fact, I have only had this BB Curve for a couple of weeks.) The only thing that I did differently was download two games. I have already verified that I am connected to the network and I have already verified that my “Screen/ Keyboard; Convenience Keys” are still set to “Voice Command” and “Camera.” I’m baffled and just don’t know what to do. Can someone please, help me figure this out? Thank you very much for your time and consideration!

    Hi,
You have low free memory left on your device. I usually average around 45 to 46 mgb.
Do you have a lot of third party applications on your BB weather, icall, bbalerts etc?
I do not know your experience level, so if you know this I'm sorry but please read and let me
know if this applies to your use of the device.
Most people close the applications by pressing the escape or red key. This does not close the applications.
Each application has a CLOSE option. For instance if you are in the calendar hit the menu key (spotted key) and scroll down to the bottom CLOSE is listed. Go through each application and press close. Go into the browser press menu and options select cache operations clear all categories and hit escape it will say cleaning memory.
Go to options - security - memory cleaning - enable it. The BB will now clean memory when idle for 5 minutes.
you will have an icon on you screen for memory cleaning make sure you press it.
And make hitting the Close button a habit !
This is a link to a post by Tanzim for increasing the memory on your device, I would do every step you can. The more device memory you free up, the faster and smoother your device will run.

  • Curve 9320 does not sync with outlook 2010

Well, I've seen some posts about this issue, yet, not found much in the way of solutions.
I have a curve 9320, oldie but goodie.  I also have Outlook 2010 on this Win 7 Pro computer.
The BB desktop software is v.7.1 bundle 2814.
Now, when I ask the BB desktop to sync with outlook it gives me one choice under config - Outlook profile. that seems to make sense, I only have 1 profile in Outook.
I ask it to sync, and the progress bar moves along, the task completes and it says sync complete.  And yet, nothing in the contacts, or calendar on either side has changed.  It says there are changes, but I can't see them on the outlook calendar or contacts.
I read in one post that having a blank email field might mess up the sync with the contacts, but could that compromise the calendar sync as well?  I set the BB desktop to only sync the calendar, and still no changes.
Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.
Or should I just grin and bear it until I can get the classic....
    thanks

OH Crap, I just purchased one today and all my contacts, scheduling etc, are in Outlook.  A friend told me to stick with HTC I should have listened.  I guess I've got time to take it back since it's only 10 hours old.

either Select All and drag to the left (turn on the Lock Automation menuItem if you have any automation curves)
    or
use the Cycle Region to export the exact length you wish:

Okay, I've checked the manual 4x and have been playing with Hyperdraw for 30 minutes and still can't figure out how to draw a smooth bell curve in the Hypereditor... In Cubase, I would take the pencil tool and draw a nice curve but can't seem to figure out how do the same in Logic!
Could someone pleeeeease lend me a clue...?

Yes, Logic was an acquisition. It has remained to this day "The Redheaded Stepchild". If they ever take
some engineers off the iOS projects and put them on Logic, the application may shape up. Don't get your hopes too high though. iOS is where they make all the Money. Logic is small potatoes in Apples big picture.
PS: This message will soon disappear because it contains truth.
To give them credit, Logic made a HUGE jump in usability when it hit Logic 8.
    I mean, MASSIVE.
It's actually usable by mortals now.
Even among professional tools, there are well-designed ones and completely arcane ones with the same functionality.
Logic grew over decades of adding an extra little limb here, and growing a third chin down there, etc., at the behest of a hundred studio techs missing this or that and calling up the engineers or higher-uppers. It was an extremely powerful, but utterly convoluted MESS.
The fact that you can now explain the basic structure of Logic 8 in less than three minutes (the fact that it HAS a "basic structure", rather than just a kraken-like reenactment of 80 years of studio development known as "The Environment") makes a huge difference, and, though they've confused people who've whittled the beast into shape over the past twenty years by trying to make the application "Logical" (including key commands), the benefits to users are, IMHO, tremendous.
I know a number of people who wouldn't have considered working with Logic before (Nuendo users), and now that Logic 9 appears to have fixed many of the most glaring bugs in Logic 8, are adding it to their toolset.

  • Brightness/Contrast edit tool messes up my clips.HELP!

When I try to apply brightness/contrast to my iMovie 6.0.3 video clips (because so many of them end up much darker on iMovie than on my camcorder), it helps with the brightness, but after the rendering is done, my clip is messed up in 2 ways: 1) the sound is mainly gone, except for a few jerky sounds here and there; 2) visually, the clip is now jerky--like it's both in slow motion and being fast forwarded at the same time, if that makes sense. I've tried again and again, looked for advice all over the internet, to no avail, and wonder if it's just a glitch in my software and if so, what to do about it? (I did download an update on 6.0 from the Apple site, but it didn't help). Thanks!!

    Hi Z
    As Catspaw writes.
The Brightness & Contrast tool in iM6 should work - a new account is a smart way to test
    where the problem originate.
This tool in iMovie HD 6 - is crude and hard to use/get a good result with.
In iMovie'08 - this is one of the few things that is a real improvment but the loss
of so much other tools results in a useless situation (as Catspaw - I don't nearly use it)
    Solution: FinalCut Express 4
    • Superb tools to correct brigtness, contrast and colors
    • So much more
    Cons
    • COST - It's not free but price is reduced with 30% after introduction of iMovie'08
    • Some new learning. Mainly in starting up (setting up scratch discs & Capturing process)
Some says steap learning curve - there is a step but mainly there are so much new
tools so it's really to learn as You progress with Your movie.

  • XYZ Camera Rotation w/ bezier curves - CS4

Hi, I've been doing a workaround but I'd like to figure out the proper way to do this...
    It's really simple:
Camera rotates left 45º on y-axis (like you are turning your head)
then, Camera rotates up 45º up on x-axis (like you are looking up)
I want to be able to control the motion with bezier points.
-- Problem: the y-axis rotation does not offset the x-axis rotation (apparently on world not local) and the camera twists the horizon line (like you are twisting your head like a confused dog)...
    Workaround 1:
    y-axis Rotate
    x-axis Orientation
-- Problem, orientation does not allow XYZ bezier point manipulation in the AE graph editor (severely handicapped motion control) <anger><hostility>
    Workaround 2:
    y-axis Rotate on Camera
    parent camera to a null
    x-axis Rotate on Null
-- Problem, keypoints to animate camera are on 2 completely different objects.
There has got to be a better way. Please, please, enlighten me...
(disclaimer: I'm used to Lightwave 3D's camera rotation, and AE7 messed me up with the new graph editor – velocity graph doesn't make any sense to me)
    p.s.
found this thread after I posted (even though I searched):

    http://www.guerrillacg.org/home/3d-rigging/the-rotation-problem
Gimble Lock is something I've fought in Lightwave so I'm aware of that. But a fixed world x-axis rotation on a camera seems AE specific – it's really weird.
Last, Orientation and Rotation x-axis both seem to be world coordinates. Both produce the same problems if using x and y on the same parameters...
Message was edited by: Eric Bintner

There are a couple of ways that I would approach this. The first would be to animate the point of interest instead of rotation.
The second would be to put the camera on a dolly. I do that all the time by adding a Camera, then adding a Null, making it 3D and then moving the null to the same position as the camera (copy and paste position). I then name the Null "camera dolly" and use the dolly to move the camera. Now you can simply adjust the pan of the camera with the Y rotation of the camera and the tilt with the x rotation of the dolly or by animating the point of interest.
It's nearly impossible to get the kind of movement you expect by setting X, Y and Z keyframes for camera rotation or by setting keyframes for orientation with Auto orientation turned off. Movement is much easier when you split the controls between a null and the camera.
As far as adjusting the movement with bezier curves, you can control the timing with bezier curves, but if you want to use curves for the angle you'll have to use the point of interest and adjust these curves with the (g) pen tool in the comp window using something other than Active Camera View.
I hope this helps. One of these days I'll put all of my camera techniques in a tutorial.

  • Non-GUI editing or import of automation curves?

I would like to generate some automation curves (for track volume) outside of garageband (from simple programs that I write myself) and somehow get them into garageband projects.
I can think of a couple of possible approaches:
    - If garageband has some sort of way of editing curves as text, so that I could paste in some text generated elsewhere, then that would be fantastic... but I'm guessing it doesn't.
    - If there's some other way of cutting/pasting pasting curves, even if it's not text, then maybe I could figure out how to make that work... that would take care of the "paste" part, but depending on the details it might be trickly to get my generated curves into the clipboard...
    - If I could find where/how curves are represented in .band files (actually directories) then I could mess with the files directly, either using an editor (emacs, etc.) or writing my own code to parse/change/write the files. I've looked through the files within a project, and it seems like the data must be in projectData... but I can't figure out where.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Lee

Wow, I think you are asking too way much. Users often wonder if ther is a specific feature, if GarageBand can do a specific task. But what you are asking goes way beyond what GarageBand is and what it is for.
    About Automation.
You only can copy Automation curves between Tracks. That's pretty much it.
I don't think there is any kind of hook into the app itself to mess with the curve on a developer base. There are only a couple of XML files hidden in the Package File that you can alter or swap out some graphic files and that's about it regarding your mods.
    Hope that helps

  • Could I permanently have messed up my headphones?

Hi, I've recently been using an equalizer for my whole MacBook. I turned it off just now to see how my headphones would sound comparatively, and I'm almost completely sure that they sound different than before the equalizer was used. Is it possible that I messed up the drivers in this process, and caused permanent damage, or have I just become accustomed to the other sound? Incase this helps, they are Harman/Kardon NC headphones.

I seriously doubt it. If you overpowered your headphones they wouldn't work at all. It's more likely that you simply became temporarily accustomed to the different equalization curve.
