Curve Tool?

Hi,
I'm still using Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. The only thing I miss is a Curve Tool.
I was never happy with the workarounds for that purpose.
(I'm using Pixelmator only for the curves ( ! ) which isn't a simple solution either.)
Is there a Curve tool included with PhotoShop Elements 10 (Mac App Store edition)?
Many thanks!

If you are familiar with gradient map adjustment layers, you can fine tune your tones as well as with a curves adjustment layer when the gradient map adjustment layer is in luminosity mode. Only thing, you can't alter R,G,B channels separately for color correction.
On the other hand, the 'color curves' mentionned by 99jon, are useful and an excellent way to train to know which kind of curve is adequate for a given intent. The name 'color curves' is totally misleading, and I can't understand why this tool targeted at tones is located with the color adjustments.
Ok, I did not understand your curves problem. By the way, I am not able to replicate the editing of gradient map adjustment layers in PSE10 like I did in PSE6

  • ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 7 Color Curves Tool problum

When I click on the color curves tool it locks up at the top of the screen and almost fills the whole screen. There is no place at the top to grab it and pull it down because the top of it is hidden above the screen. Also it only shows thumbnail size pictures that can not be enlarged. I increased my screen resolution to 1280x800 and Photoshop decreases in size and the color curves tool decreases but the name of the tool and the close button at the top are still hidden and the color curves tool screen still can not be moved... Is this something I can fix or is this a software problem? I downloaded this trial version then upgraded it to a full version. I am using Windows Vista on a Sony Vaio laptop. William in Michigan.

  • BUG: Premiere CC Curve Tool cuts off luma at 100% ?

The Color Curve Tool from Premiere CC cuts off luminance to 100% video level. That is a problem if the input videos have so-called "super-whites" in it.
This would include for example the Canon C100, C300, C500 because the video levels from this cameras defaults to more then 100% video-level.
The Curve Tool was definetly not clipping at 100% in Premiere CS6!
Please consider this as a bug that has to be fixed soon, because it changes colors all older projects which includes material from this popular cameras.
BTW - Speedgrade CC (also previous versions) also did not handle Super-Whites correctly and clips it even at import! This does not seemed to be fixed in SG CC.

  • Tone sampling in cs4 curves tool

    hi all
just upgraded from cs2. when using the curves tool I could sample the tones in my image and see where the lay on the curve by pressing the alt/option key... this function seems to have disappeared in cs4... is there a new way to achieve this?
    thanks in advance
    steve

Steve, with the Eyedropper Tool selected, the command-key and the mouse-button pressed Photoshop CS4 does show the point on the curve when moving the cursor across the image.
At least it does on my computer and as this has been discussed in other threads it would appear on other peoples computers too.

  • Curves tool dictates the limits

Wonderful to have a very competent Curves tool in vs 3. But why oh why, do Apple feel they have to dictate to us, what we can do with it?
If you try to push a point a long way to the left, it suddenly disappears. There is no way to really mess around with extremes of contrast.
I suppose it behaves this way, because someone at Apple decided that most people don't know how to use curves ... 'so we'll give them curves but not let them mess them up, by limiting what they can do'. Infuriating.
Trying to move the points using the numbers, returns a dialog message :
    "Warning
The point was moved to xxxx so that it would not be too close to other points on the curve."
    What??
Anyone know of a way to change this behaviour?

  • PS CS6 Curves Tool - Undo Options (?)

Greetings and sheepish bleatings from a PS noob.
If making multiple (fine tuning) adjustments within the Curves Tool to an image, you don't like the last adjustment change that you've made, is there a way to undo the last adjustment without having to start the whole process from the beginning?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Ctrl-Z did work! I tried it prior to posting the question but initially it didn't seem to do anything. Maybe that's because the change I'd made was too small to notice.
    Thank you for your help.

    Dear community,

    Yeah right ,
gradients tools are present in all these version
and curves are not present in any of these officially .
Curves are present with their own interface.
One big problem is that you'll never find them logically where they are : under the menu 'Enhance/color correstion', it's the 'adjust color curves' option.
Add to that problem the fact that this kind of adjustment is not about colours (no R,G,B channels) and you'll see why it is missed by everybody.
The interface is meant to help beginners understand how curves work : you choose the effect you want and you see the curve being drawn. Excellent for pedagogy but users of the traditionnal curves manipulations don't understand the new way.
If you want the old curves interface, you can add many free or affordable add-ons like Elements+. The most powerful and free one is the smartcurve plugin for Windows 32 bits.
    Other ideas:
    - if you don't use curves for colour correction, you can use the gradient tool adjustment layer (black to white) in luminosity mode. That's how you deal with curves in adjustment layers. Note that using gradient maps instead of curves is only a graphical way to determine the inflexion points. Same parameters, different inferface.
    - Using curves intensively was the way to edit ten years ago. Now, you can use the ACR basic tag to achieve quickly much better tone and colour correction, that way you won't need curves most of the time.

  • Are there tutorials for Color Balance or Curves tools?

Is there information on how the various slider tools work? I haven't found anything on the site.

    Hi MsKelly65,
Thanks for your question. We're currently working on custom closed captions for our Getting Started videos using Dotsub. You can see a test of our first one in the first video of the Illustrator Getting Started here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/learn/start/illustrator.html
To see the closed captions, click the "CC" button in the YouTube player controls in the first video in the Illustrator series. You'll see a choice: "English - via dotsub". Turn that on, and you can see the closed captions.
Please let us know if this is helpful. We were thinking this might serve the purpose of transcripts, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. We're working to get the rest of them live as soon as possible, including the Photoshop tutorial you're watching.

  • I just installed Illustrator CC and none of the new features are included (Join tool, curve tool, ect).

Yet, when I go to see if I need an update from the creative cloud, it says the application is up to date. I'm running on the newest version of Mac.

This is what I see when I hit Get Info. There isnt a version under General Info.
As for Elwood's solution, I restarted my Mac and saw this when I started Creative Cloud instead of updates.
I'm going to try to uninstall it and try again.

  • RGB Color Curve

YES - there is a custom tone curve - finally, it works great. I don't miss the old sliders a bit.
But still missing is the color curve tool, complete with color picker like in competing products.
Right now the only way to color an image is the split toning - that works a bit like a color curve but it is very restricted.
With the color curve You can produce color changes very easily and very intuitively.
I hope Adobe can implement it.
PS.: Another thing I find useful is a RGB channel tool where you can type in formulas. The implementation is rather simple, it just needs a formula parser. With 3 formulas a unique development reciepy could be created:
    Example:
    R =  0.9*R + 0.1 * G
    G = 1*G
    B = 1*B + 0.1
But I guess this is too technical for a product like Lightroom.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Which program has the color formulas you proposed? - or is that an original invention .
For Bibble 5 there is a plugin available called  MathBox by Baruchel. It uses the public formula interpreter muparser.
The input variables are r (red), g (green), b (blue) and also h (hue), s (saturation), v (value) and l (luminance) which all values beeing between 0 and 1, except for h, which is between 0 and 2pi. The plugin also implements 3 sliders which control the value of user variables x, y and z.As You can imagine, that tool is extremely powerful for example to do film simulation.
Even if Adobe does not want to show such formulas to "the public", it would be nice to select certain recepies from a drop downlist plus one slider for a user variable. The recepies could be loaded from an XML file which can be edited by the adventurous. That would be really a great addon!

  • Is it possible to increase the size of the CURVES window?

    Hello,
I am using LR 5 and love the CURVES tool.
But I find it a bit small... is there a way to increase its size or even, to send it to a full other monitor?
    Ideas?
    Thanks!

NO   Even dragging the panel wider does not change the size of the curves box, it just puts more gray space on each side.  I agree it would be nice if the box got bigger when changing the panel size.

  • Curves layer in new PSE?

I usually use Photoshop CS for my editing, but I'm buying a laptop that is not as powerful as my desktop, so was thinking of going with a photo editor that is a bit 'lighter' that PS, so looking at PS Elements.
I understand that you can create files with layers, and that PSE includes a few adjustment layers as well; and also that you can apply a full range of blending options (screen, multiply, overlay, soft light, hue, color, etc.). I have a few questions:
Does the newest version of PSE include a curves adjustment layer? And if not, does it at least have a Curves adjustment, even if not as a layer adjustment? and/or I've heard of some plug-ins that provide a curve feature--are these any good?
Does PSE save images as .PSD files, and if yes, I assume that I can open them in PS too, is that right?
Does PSE have a High Pass filter?
Are there any limits to the file depth: 8-bit, 16-bit, etc. and can I work in AdobeRGB color space?
Finally, is there any file size limits in PSE, either the file or the image size?
As an aside to all this, I wish Adobe would make this type of basic information more easily available. They seem to be caught up in providing us with so much fluff on their website, that they don't give us the information we need.
    Best, David.

PSE has an odd curves tool, called color curves that doesn't create an adjustment layer. You can use one of the many add-on toolsets to add a curves adjustment layer to PSE, but it will always be for the combined RGB channel, so of limited use. In windows, the free Smart Curve filter is good, but there is no mac equivalent.
Here is a screenshot of the PSE color curves dialog:
Does PSE save images as .PSD files, and if yes, I assume that I can open them in PS too, is that right?
    Yes.
Does PSE have a High Pass filter?
    Yes.
Are there any limits to the file depth: 8-bit, 16-bit, etc. and can I work in AdobeRGB color space?
You can work in Adobe RGB and you can use both 8 and 16 bit files, but the use of layers and artistic filters on 16 bit files is still severely limited in PSE. It's about where PS was back in CS1 in that respect.
Finally, is there any file size limits in PSE, either the file or the image size?
In the editor the limit is 30,000 px per side. For organizer, see:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/maximum-image-size-limits-photoshop.html
I would suggest doing the trial and giving it a good hard workout. Ask here if you have more questions. Adobe's attempts to simplify the interface mean that it's not always easy to know what all is available, even with the program open in front of you.

  • Levels, Exposure, Curves - another explanation attempt

The exposure slider in Aperture does pretty much the same as moving the right bottom sliders in Levels. One difference is that one naturally can move the right slider in levels only to the left. The exposure slider can be moved in both directions.
The brightness slider does the exactly the same, except that it acts on the left bottom control in Levels. The contrast slider acts on both the right and left control.
In general, Levels is a much more powerfull tool [than the Exposure section] but can be trickier to use (and it is easy to spoil an image by making it look anatural). Its sliders can create much more drastic changes, e.g. extremely high contrast. And by offering midtone and quartertone controls, different tonal ranges can be adjusted differently. By moving the top sliders the these controls can be moved to any point in the tonal range.
When moving the right or left slider in Levels to the start of the histogram (to create pure blacks and whites), particularly when moving them quite a bit, one often might get better results by doing this separately for the three channels than on the luminance channel.
Generally, I have the impression that Exposure/Brightness/Contrast do a better job at balancing the three colour channels than the levels adjustment set to Luminance to maintain a natural look.
Comparing with the Curve tool (in e.g. Photoshop), one can state that levels and curves do exactly the same, the top controls on the diagram in levels in Aperture are the output of curves (y-axis) and and the bottom controls in Aperture are the input of curves (x-axis). The level controls in Aperture, however, 'only' have five control sliders at the bottom and only three at the top (and none at endpoints there).
An attempt to explain why all controls do more or less the same:
Take a B&W image (that makes things easier to understand). Any global image manipulation does nothing but remap luminence values. Every lumininence value in the original image gets translated into a value in the output, e.g., adding 20 (on the scale 0-255) to all brightens an image (probably not in a very smart way). This remapping is given by a functional relationship that can be illustrated by the curve in Curve tool. But there a lot of ways to represent that functional relationship, with levels being just another one (and one that I find more intuitive).
