Curves and Elements 4.0

So I broke down and purchased the Curves tool from the Lynch web site. It it pretty interesting, but what became obvious pretty quick, is I have NO idea how to be effective in using them.
I can play and see how it lightens and brightens etc... but it is pretty unpredictable ... I feel like a little kid with a machine gun in hand and when I pull the trigger, there is so much "kick" I just spray everywhere but where intended.
Any tutorials or books you have used that you recommend?

The curves tool is $29.99 ( http://aps8.com/powercurves4.html ). Not terribly cheap, but not a bundle either. I guess it is valuable to point out that it is less expensive to get my book from Amazon ( http://aps8.com/hppe4.html ). The Curves product is by HumanSoftware, and they provide some documentation and support. The curves part of the interface works in a way that is very similar to standard curves. There are just a lot more options (such as being able to compare up to 9 different applications on a single preview), and perhaps that clutters the interface.
My previous books (elements 2 and 3) go through how to apply curves for correction and balancing. I didn't include that in the Elements 4 book because I didn't include a curves tool--I include curve presets. The presets I include (26 of them) cover most of what curves are useful for. I also include a solution using Gradient maps that is a fine substitute for curves, and can produce the same results. Better, it is part of the regular interface and is completely editable. In other words, you don't really need the curves...but people kept asking for them, so I found someone who could provide them -- for not a ridiculous lot of $$ (some packages cost a LOT).

In a few words, yes and no. To get your comfort zone under the hoods of Photoshop Elements and Lightroom, all you have to do is to play with Lightroom... and discover your comfort zone with it.
Please note that there were some times that you can't "edit" in Lightroom like what you do in Photoshop Element (or more powerful photo editing app such as Photoshop CC), Lightroom allows you to send the file over to Photoshop Element to do specific edit, then send it back to Lightroom.
Lightroom is more of database program, not that we see all kind of crunching numbers or any kind of database functions before our eyes... it is inside the program. Don't worry too much about database thing. Nothing.
Perhaps it might be something that you are not getting used to, but there are some pretty good tutorials on how to get most out of Lightroom through Lynda dot com website or Adobe TV videos on Lightroom.

Hue Curves, Saturation curves and Alpha Curves

Are there Hue or Saturation curves in any native plug in for AE. This is something I read about in the Color Correction Handbook. He actually refers to them as Hue vs. Sat curves and Hue vs. Luminance.
I believe you can adjust the saturation of High light, Mid tones and Shadow independently in Color Finesse.
And regarding the Curves Preset in AE. What the hell do you use the Alpha Curve for? I tried it on several clips that had Alpha Channels and IT did nothing. I noticed a very very slight change on some text.

Alpha curves are useful when you have feathered edges (or not 100% black or white but some 'grey' semi-tranparent values) on your alpha. You could use it for example to choke your matte in or out and tweak the edge. Or to adjust the overall visibility like on a smoke element, with finer control over what goes transparent than if you had simply turned down the visibility for the layer as a whole.

Yes. Well, sort of: instead of a "path", set the pen tool to "shape" in the tool properties. Then set the fill colour to transparent, and the stroke colour to the colour you want. You can also set the stroke width.
Not perfect, but at least you can see the path more clearly - the anchor points and handles still remain the default colour. Open the path panel, and right-mouse click the path shape to create a selection based on that shape. The Paths panel menu also allows you to create work paths based on that shape.
Unfortunately when you try to move the handles the black thin outline appears again until you release the mouse button.
This is one of several things that works better in Photoline: in Photoline, once the path is set to a specific colour, editing the path uses the actual colour and stroke width. which is extremely handy for creating path based selection with awkward background colours and/or a high resolution screen. In Photoline the handles and bezier points are also much, much larger, which makes it rather simpler to work with as well - especially on a higher resolution screen. And when selected the handles and points are a clear red with a black outline - again easier to spot and identify. I just works better, in my opinion.

Dreamweaver CC automatically deletes code in code view and elements in design view

When I open a file in Dreamweaver, it automatically shows a * next to the filename - showing it has been edited.
Then often when I select some code in code view, or an element in design view (such as a table, an image, some text) it is suddenly deleted.
The problem is especially bad (happens without fail) if I am switching between programs. But also happens when I'm not switching.
I do not have this problem on a different user account.
I have reinstalled Dreamweaver three times now. Also renamed preference and configuration folders. Tried with a wired mouse and keyboard. Nothing has worked.
I can't think what I did to cause this. I installed MAMP recently - but have uninstalled it correctly I think.
I had an issue with one file in which there were about 30 Spry collapsible panels. I kept getting this warning:
"A script in file Macintosh HD:Applications:Adobe Dreamweaver CC:Configuration:Shared:Spry:DesignTime:EditingUtils.js has been running for a long time. Do you want to continue?"
I have to click 'yes' many times to get into the file, and the warning keeps coming up while the file is open.
However, my big issue of DW CC deleting code and elements happens whether or not this particular file is open.
So this may have nothing to do with it.
Any ideas anyone?
Adobe's customer service has not helped. In fact, I have not even been able to get through to anyone on the phone - having waited literally hours listening to music, and getting shunted from person to person. And then their promised 'call backs' never happen.

I do not have this problem on a different user account.
You've got a bad/corrupted user account. Create a new one with Admin level priveleges and delete your old user.

Raw updates needed for CS5 and Elements 11?

I have several adobe products. I want to install the latest raw updates for CS5 Photoshop and Elements 11. The app. manager tells me I have the latest updates. My CS6 product updated the newest raw product but not my others. I would like to get phone support for these issues - is there a phone number that connects to real people? The %^*()^ support section on the web takes me around in circles - very frustrating. Any help out there?

the good old argument is at what point do you stop supporting stuff? Elements is now up to 13.
I assume Adobe would argue you have cc already why are you still using cs5?
As I read it, the new 8.7 raw is only good for cs6 and above. They won't make 2 versions of raw, so I assume you are still on 7.4 for cs5?
On that basis, alas stick with your cs6 to do the newer stuff you need.

Sorry to say it, but I think you can see from Bob's response that there's no way to solve this rapidly.
Did you take an image of your Mountain Lion install before upgrading to Yosemite? Roll back to that. If you're not in the habit of taking a snapshot of your system before performing operating system upgrades - get in that habit. If you are dependent on anything at all on hour computer, having a reliable backup method in place is essential. If you don't have a Time Capsule, or some other way to run Time Machine onto a disk that's not in your computer, go set that up yesterday.
If you can't just remove Yosemite and roll back to Mountain Lion for whatever reason, you can partition your drive so that you can install both Yosemite and Mountain Lion on the same drive, and then boot into Mountain Lion when you need to work in CS5. Or you can take your Mountain Lion disc (I assume you have one, no?) and then use it to create a virtual machine in something like VirtualBox to run Mountain Lion from inside Yosemite.

Go to to the image I'm working on --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements
I uninstalled and reinstalled both iPhoto as well as Elements.
I spoke with application technical support. There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto. However there is no support from Adobe. I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

Color picker not working in CC and Elements 12

My Color picker keeps picking gray instead of any other color i chose. its the same in CC and Elements 12. I'm on an iMac running Yosemite.
the color picker works ok when no document is open but reverts back to gray once i open one.

Could you please attach the crash report so that we can see what is causing PSE11 to crash.
Meanwhile please try resetting preferences by:
Press Cmd + K > It will open preferences dialog > In genearl tab, click on Reset Preferences on Next Launch

In Windows 7 I mistakenly un-installed Adobe Application Manager and all applications (CS3E, CS5 and Elements 6) have disappeared from programs on the start menu

WIN7: Mistakenly un-installed Adobe Application Manager and now all Adobe apps (CS3, CS5 and Elements 6) have disappeared from the programs list in the start up menu.
CS5 Bridge is still there so I can get into the photo editor to de-activate it and re-install.
However, all of CS3 has disappeared so I cannot get into it to de-activate.
Question 1: Will downloading and re-installing Adobe Application manager get CS3 automatically back?
Question 2: If not, what to do to get CS3 back things working properly again? Remember, I can't de-activate it.

Don't worry about activation unless you are installing on a new and different machine. Simply reinstall in order. It should all work.
Then install any updates. Product updates
After that, let me know how it went and if there are any further questions.

I got a new MacBook pro and want to install my lightroom and elements 11.

I uninstalled both programs on my old computer and this computer were set to factory setting and sold.
When I try to install on my new computer - after informing my serial numbers, I get the answer, that this number is not correct. II of course checked again, and the typed numbers are correct. The same as mentioned on you webside under my file.
please help.

thanks for mail. I now tried again to activate lightroom by copying the serial number on Adobe webside/my account. Unfortunately same result: I got the following message:
The serial number is invalid. Please try again: if the problem persist, please contact customer support.
Unfortunately the could or would not help - only referred to this chat page.
I have serial numbers for both version 4 and 5 and of course downloaded the latest, which is version 5.

firstly this is a user to user forum so it's not our website, nevertheless I'm sure we can help you.
Firstly, are the serial numbers you're using for the same version of Lightroom?
If they are, then I'd suggest copying the serial numbers straight from your profile on the Adobe website to the Lightroom screen rather than retyping. It's easy to mistype even when you're sure you're not (we've had several such instances in the past).
Can you five us the exact wording of the error message (or a screen grab as long as it doesn't reveal the serial numbers as this a public forum)?
