Curves or Channel Mixer - which is better?

Which do you think is better for colour correcting/adjustment (especially CMYK images)

When you add up the ink percentages of your four ink colors - Cyan+Magenta+Yellow+Black, you'll get your total ink density, which is what I'm sure Alan is referring to. Set one side of your Info Palette to read Total Ink, and then you'll easily be able to monitor that. If you have too much ink density, magazines are very likely to kick your file back, asking you to fix it, making you miss your deadline. If you have too little ink density, your blacks may look weak.
Alan is correct, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Selective Colors are the first choice tools for CMYK color correction and Channel Mixer is usually for making huge fixes which will usually require Curves to bring back into line anyway.

  • Compositing - Channel Mixer Help

I've been using AE now for a few years, (since v5.5) and mostly use it for motion graphics. Using CS3 now. But right now, I'm beginning to work through Steve Wright's book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Compositing-Film-Video-Second/dp/024080760X">Digital Compositing for Film and Video</a> to focus more on true compositing.
The author's aim is to keep the lessons application-independent and present concepts in a way that would be applicable to most software packages. (However, considering the author's frequent references to "nodes" and his well-known status as a Shake user & <a href="http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=408">Shake instructor</a>, it's apparent that using Shake, while reading this book, would lead to the least bumps in the road, when attempting to follow along.)
But I'm not using Shake, I'm using AE and have encountered a small bump in the road. Regarding luma keys he mentions how luma values are represented in the individual colors R,G,B. To cut to the chase, he says, "One standard equation that mixes the right proportions of RGB values to create a luminance image on a color monitor is:
    Luminance = 0.30R + 0.59G + 0.11B"
Great. But I can't figure exactly how to mix the RGB values with the above proportions in AE. It's quite easy & straight-forward in Photoshop, using the Channel Mixer. <a href="http://www.geocities.com/kevincbrock/channel_mixer.png">Example here</a>. But AE's Channel Mixer does not seem to work quite the same way as it's counterpart in PS. There are values there, for instance, "Red-Red", but they seem to run in values from -200 to 200, not percentages, like PS. So my question is, how do I achieve the same channel mixing results in AE that I can in PS?
I'll add this: I was able to achieve the desired result in AE, but by using a round-a-bout sort of tactic. Instead of using the "Channel Mixer", I applied the "Set Channels" effect to my sample shot. By changing the "Set Red to Source 1's LUMINANCE", then doing the same for Green and Blue, setting them all to LUMINANCE, the resulting image is identical to the sample shot that was tweaked in Photoshop. Again, it worked, but I'd like to know how to change the proportions of RGB to other values than those represented in the formula above.
    Hope this all makes sense.
Oh, and while I'm here.....I'll throw this in: In AE, when you apply the "Curves" effect, can you input precise values for input / output. Again, this is simple in Photoshop, but unless I don't have some display items turned on in the Curves editor in AE, I don't see a way to enter precise values. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for any input.
EDIT: for some reason, the links I've posted aren't showing up properly. So if your'e interested in following any of them you'll have to copy/paste on your own. Don't know why......

    >Great. But I can't figure exactly how to mix the RGB values with the
    >above proportions in AE.
You could use expressions... You create sliders for each input, then feed their output to the actual effects. Something like
    //----begin expression
    linear(value,0,100,-200,200)
    //----end expression
should do in most cases. Still, be careful. Not everything written in that book directly applies to AE. It does not figure in any specifics of color management nor different Gammas which could massively skew results because the source footage will already be pre-adjusted and the comp will add another level of adjustments.
    >Oh, and while I'm here.....I'll throw this in: In AE, when you apply >the "Curves" effect, can you input precise values for input / output.
Nope. AE's Curve effect will adapt to the project bit depth as a lot of other effects, presenting you with the problem of which values to actually use. This would only make sense if the effect itself would be independent from AE and process in float all the time and only the inputs were presented as different normalized ranges. There was/ should have been an alternative Curves effect from Frischluft, but at this point development has reached a dead stop, so it's doubtful it will ever be unleashed upon the world.

  • CS5.5 Channel Mixer Effect

The channel mixer in CS5.5 now has presets like "Ambisonic B format to L R Ls Rs" and "Matrixed Stereo to ITU 5.1."  The implication is that AA can turn certain 2-channel files into 5.1 files.  Is this correct?  I can't figure out how to make this work, and the online manual has nothing about this.
    J. D.

This is fun, but not as much fun as you'd like it to be.  Let me explain.
There is one caviat we all need to pay attention to: these advanced functions in the Channel Mixer effect are PASSIVE mixing only, and therefore won't correctly decode a matrixed-quad source such as SQ, QS, or Dolby Surround.  I have no idea what that means for Ambisonics.     But there are some interesting applications for this, to be sure.
Now, having said that, here's what I discovered.
If your source file is stereo, then first you must convert it to 5.1 (or whatever is suitable) using Edit > Convert Sample Type.  Pay close attention to the optional dropdowns.
Now you should have a file with two front channels with audio and 4 silent channels.  Then select all, open the Channel Mixer, and proceed.  The end result should be what you're looking for (unless you need phase-based decoding, which is better done via scripting in AA3).

  • CMYK slider in the RGB Channel Mixer

When I'm doing RGB retouch I'm often converting the image to CMYK just to use the Channel Mixer in that mode. I can never seem to get the hang of channel mixer in RGB to the same result, I guess I just understand CMYK plates better.
Is there any way of seeing the CMYK slider in RGB mode?

As the Channel Mixer seems to operate on the RGB or CMYK Channels that make up the composite I doubt there is.
I would highly discourage repeatedly switching Color Modes while image editing.
When we switched to RGB editing (yes, I too did prefer editing images in CMYK back when) it helped me to split Curves Adjustments into two Layers – one set to Color and one to Luminance.
    But basically R corresponds to Y, G to M, B to C.
Do you at least work in 16bit?

  • Which is better sockets/socketchannel why

    which is better java.io.Socket / java.nio.channel.SocketChannel

Better for what? They both work. Sockets are simple but only support blocking operations. SocketChannels are about ten times as complex to use but they support non-blocking and multiplexed I/O and also various types of direct and mapped buffering so they can also imply less data movement.

  • Which is better, many PXI cards or fewer PXI cards with more SCXI cards?

I have a pretty basic question.  Which is "better", using multiple PXI cards for analog inputs or a single PXI card and multiple SCXI cards?  For example, if I have say 100 channels to sample (all at the same rate), I could use 2 6225s at 80 ch each.  Or I could use 1 6220 and 4 SCXI 1100s (32 ch each).  What are the pros and cons with either approach?  Keep in mind sample rate probably isn't an issue (less than 1 kHz) but it is the same for all channels.
    Thanks.

The pros/cons will depend on your application now and in the future.  I recommend contacting your local NI sales representative.  Synchronizing across a PXI system is easy to do via the backplane.  There are PXI/SCXI combo chassis available, you could use PXI multifunction DAQ cards and then SCC for signal conditioning for thermocouples for additional functionality later.  There are many possibilities that may be best discussed with your sales representative.

  • Which is better, FCS or CS4?

Im going to start making videos...
so, i would like your opinions on which is better, Final Cut Studio 3 or Creative Suite 4?
it would be better if the apps:
    1. have templates
    2. are easy to use (for beginners)
    btw,
If CS4, I know that I'll get Photoshop.
But, FCS 3, does it has any Photoshop equivalents?
    Soundbooth=CS4
    Soundtrack Pro=FCS 3
    Which is better?

If you are beginning, why don't you start with iMovie? It's already on your Mac and you can get an idea of what video editing is like. Both Final Cut Studio and Adobe CS5 have a high learning curve, and I wouldn't consider putting either one of them on a 13" laptop.
I really encourage you to consider your requirements & what kind of video you anticipate doing (home movies or are you planning to do commercials for Nike?). What level of experience do you currently have?

  • TLFTextField or TLF, which is better to use in CS5?

    Hi,
I have been developing content using TLF with CS4 and in Flash Builder. Recently when I switched to CS5, there was this cool TLFTextField. So now I wonder, TLFTextField or TLF, which is better to use in CS5? Almost all of my text will be dynamically generated. Please share your thoughts - possibly with pros and cons.
    ~ Shiyaz

I assume you've found TLFTextField in Flash Pro (I can't remember if Flash Builder made a TLFTextField class or not). Anyway, if you're considering using Flash Pro, here's some background on the TLFTextField class:
This class was created primarily for backwards compatibility with Classic Text coding. If you used Flash Pro CS 4 or earlier versions, and you wrote ActionScript for your text objects, you were using TextField objects. So, when you upgraded to CS 5, and you decided to convert all your old Classic text objects to the new TLF objects, all your code would have broken were it not for TLFTextField class. TLFTextField implements the TextField API so that your existing TextField code can be used in the TLF environment.
So, if you're an ActionScript programmer who is already comfortable programming using the TextField API, it certainly makes sense to continue doing so but using TLFTextField objects. However, if you want to take advantage of the new TLF features, the old API doesn't really give you the ability to do that. So, the TLFTextField provided a new API:
    function get textFlow():TextFlow;
The TextFlow class is the top level class of the TLF model objects. Using that object, you can then set attributes on your text just as if you were working with TextFlow in Flash Builder. So, in essence, TLFTextField provides backwards compatibility, continued use of the familiar API set, and access to the TextFlow model class.
Another nuance to be aware of is that if you choose to embed fonts, TLF requires the newer "DF4" (for DefineFont4, based on the SWF Tag name) vs. the older "DF3" fonts that TextField requires. For text on the stage, Flash Pro will do all the tricky work for deciding when to embed DF3 and when to embed DF4 fonts, but just be aware that mixing Classic text and TLF text when using embedded fonts can cause a "double tax" on your SWF size because it may embed the same font both as DF3 and DF4.
    Good Luck!

  • CS6 channel mixer misbehaving!

Can someone help with my problem please? I export a photo to CS6 and use channel mixer to swap the red and blue channel values i.e red from 100 to 0 and blue from 0 to 100
which should give me a blue background for infrared photos then for further PP but it is giving me a green background instead and nothing has changed it has just decided it wants to act strangely
I do have malware on my macbook pro retina so Im wondering if this has something to do with it? Would be great full if someone has any clues?

With the channel mixer to swap the Red and Green channels:
    1. Select Red for the Output Channel
Change the Red to Zero (0) and the Blue to 100
    2. Select Blue for the Output Channel
Change the Red to 100 and the Blue to Zero(0)
You could also save the settings as a preset so you don't have to adjust the sliders everytime

  • Which is Better Nokia Asha 303 or Nokia Asha 311

Can you tell me which is better 303 or 311?

hmm.. as owner of both phones, I would like to say my bet.
Actually, there are lots of difference on both phones. I'll dice it up.
    1. Homescreen
On 303 the homecscreen is the same as other s40 devices , you know, the "active standby" thingy, where you can stack up a pile of shortcuts on the homescreen.
On the 311 however, it has 3 different homescreens, the app drawer where all your apps are displayed, the active standby where you can put your favorite apps and contacts as a shortcut, and your frequently used app (music player, radio, or dialler) which you can jump to and from with just a swipe from left or right.
    2. Input method
On the 303, it has a full physical keyboard, which eases up the typing experience, branding the 303 as "type smarter". To be honest, I truly miss that keyboard.
On the 311 however, it has a virtual keyboard and the usual phone keypad (virtual also). They can automatically turn to landscape mode if you will turn the phone to landscape. In writing this comment, I am using my 311, as my 303 died when it plunged into the pool.
    3. Camera
both features a 3.2mp camera, which is good for a higher than basic photo and video capturing. You can view my videos on my yt channel (MultiCadmiel) where I used a 303, and 311.
Noticebly, the meer difference on the two is their mic. The 303 can capture every sound pitch, as on my videos I am capturing trains passing by. Whenever a train horns on thr 303, it can capture the sound without distortion. But the story is different on the 311, even a single horn can distort the mic.
    4.Speaker
the 303 is impresibly a great boom box, voicing out a great sound quality thru it's speakers, again it is not the same with the 311. The 311 is not that loud, but who thr heck would use loudspeaker while inside the bus? Headsets are available.
    5. Internet
here, the 311 boast as being faster on loading internet pages, as well as download speed.
There are still many to consider, but overall, both are better for me.
If you want a full qwerty experience, use the 303, if you want a full touched phone, use the 311.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the camera on the 311 automatically rotates to landscape or portrait, a thing missing on the 303.

    my phones are 3120c, 303, and 311.

  • Dolby 2.0.ac3 VERSUS AIFF? What are the merits of each?which is better?

Like the title says really... Which out of the Dolby 2.0.ac3 codec or the AIFF codec is better? I'm authoring a few DVD's and have had a few comments back saying that they can only hear one audio channel, I have been using just the Dolby codec in my DVD. Is it used for surround sound? is there one that I shouldn't use? Is one of them not widely used by DVD players or computers wanting to play them?
Any explantions of these two file types would be brilliant.
    Thanks

    Hey overcast
sorry for the delayed response, since you see everyone always say "use .ac3 over .aif), but sometimes the "why" is a little unclear, and a lot of times, it's just "use it bcz it's better".
as far as which is better, both have advantages and disadvantages.
    for example:
f you want more technical info, let me kone of the biggest advantages of Dolby Digital (.ac3) is that it's the defacto choice for audio on DVD and a lot of broadcasaters, since this is the only codec that keeps (for the most part) the audio elements original fidelity at the lowest possible bit-rate from all video codecs currently out. one drawback is that the waveform has a stricter ceiling and floor, ie the loss of fidelity.
you would need professional decoders, verifiers and bit-stream analyzers to truly see the difference, but can you hear it, only the most attuned ear in optimal conditions can hear a difference (of course IMHO).
however, lossless apple audio (.aif) (believe me, still compressed, but with a small ratio) is almost as good and uncompressed (.pcm) audio and retains way more fidelity and a comparable bit-rate to that of the uncompressed audio. the range of the waveform is almost identical to that of raw audio.
an additional note for .aif is that it's bit-rate is almost identical to that of uncompressed audio, so it takes up more bandwith, but once again, the sound is "richer" therefore this is personally my codec choice when authoring music DVD's where i have stereo (again, IMHO).
i guess thats the meat of it. if you need more information, let me know.

  • How to become Channel Mixer

    Hi everybody
I Have Photoshop Elements 5 and I would like to upgrade it to a later version. Now I need to know if PSE 8 would have Channelmixer, which I need for my work. If not, can I upgrade to a Adobe Version with Channel Mixer ? And how can I do this ?
Thank you for some advice !
    Hanny

Can you point me to where the $299 upgrade to CS5 from PSE8 offer is located?   When I
go to the Adobe store and specify an upgrade from PSE8 to CS5, the price is $599.  $199 for CSx to CS5,
but that does not help me.   Did this promotion end, or am I missing something?  Do you happen to know how long the offer will be on the table?

  • Desaturate and channel mixer

Hi, I have a clip that I have made b&w by applying colour correction and dragging the saturation to 0. I was wondering if someone knows what RGB channel mix does FCE use when we do desaturate? I tried replicating the same with channel mixer and changing the R,G,B value with monochrome ticked but could not arrive at a set of values that gave the same look as desaturate?
    I'm using FCE 4.0.1
    thanks

I know of the desaturate filter and the monochrome option on the channel mixer.
The reason I am playing around with the channel mixer is because I am not entirely happy with the b&w image that gets displayed. Because of the way the shot was taken, I expect there to be more information in the red and green channels and which is why I am trying to adjust them and get the right detail and contrast.
But as I do that, I was wondering what formula does final cut use when you apply desaturate. In the background, it would also be adjusting the red, green and blue channels? Right?

  • Custom 'channel mixer' preset?

I'm editing a lot of underwatervideo's in premiere 10. The autocolour effect gives me a lot of colour-flickering, and I have to adjust colour manually with the Channel Mixer effect.
The optimal settings is just about the same in each clip, but I have to set it up from scratch each time.
Is there a way to edit this effect so that it would start with the correct settings?

    Welcome to the forum.
Steve's suggestion is a great workflow. It will allow one to make all adjustments to one Clip, and then transfer ALL of those Effects and adjustments to all other Clips, requiring those adjustments. Note: you can then go into each Clip and fine-tune the adjustments, should they require special treatment. Note: if the Clip, from which one has done the Copy, has other Effects, that will NOT be required on the remaining Clips, one must manually Delete those, after Paste Attributes. For that reason, I recommend doing the adjustment and application of any/all Effects that will be common, then doing the Copy/Paste Attributes first, and then going in and adding any additional Effects, that are Clip-specific.
The Auto Effects, such as Color/Colour, will often cause "strobing," if the lighting and exposure are not 100% constant throughout the Clip - any changes, and one will likely get some strobing, which may, or may not be noticed. I shy away from those Auto Effects, as much as I can.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
