  • Cable to connect old iMac as second screen for new iMac

Just bought the new iMac 27" with thunderbolt port.  I understand I can hook up my old iMac (24" Mid 2007) and use it as second monitor.  My challenge is confirming that, and then figuring out which cable to use.
The manual says the old iMac has a "Mini-DVI video out port", making it sound like it won't accept input.  True?
If it will indeed accept input, what cable do I use to connect the two Macs?
If indeed I can't use the second iMac, I'll purchase a separate monitor.  What should I look for in monitors that will easily attach to the thunderbolt-only new iMac?  I won't be buying the Apple monitor.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Bob

Most new monitors will support standard DVI and VGA connections. Some may support Mini-DVI ports. That's about all I can tell you.
As for other factors I would look at monitor reviews - as many as you can - for the size and resolutions in which you are interested. There are a lot of products out there. You might try first doing a Google search to learn more about the meanings of the various specs the manufacturers provide so you might wade through the smoke and mirrors in search of meaningful information.

  • Using 12 inch Powerbook as second screen for new 17 inch MBP.

My new 17' MBP should be here in the new day or two. I want to use my 3 year old 12 inch powerbook as a second screen, mainly to keep my email client open on that screen.
What is the best way to do this? I am sure it's not hard but I have never used a second screen.
for you super users out there....is there a way to run the programs on my bookbook from the keyboard on the MBP without remote desktop? I have some programs on that machine I need to use that can't be run on the new Intel machines (PAUP if you know it). They will be sitting right next to each other so I can just use the other keyboard but I like to save time at everything.

    Just try ScreenRecycler from http://www.screenrecycler.com/
You can even use a Windows PC or a Linux box as second display.

  • Second screen for  MacBook Pro with new IOS update?

I have a second screen for my MacBook Pro and after doing the IOS update it does not work.  I went to preferences and it does not appear as an available display.

    No can't be done.
I would like to see the links to anyone that says it can. So please post one or 2 of them. Thanks.

  • Can I use my old iMac as a second screen for my new one?

I have an old iMac (about 4-5 years) that I don't use anymore and a new iMac that I just bought a few months ago.
Can I us my old iMac as a second display for my new one? Its a slow computer now, but the screen is nice and big so it would be nice to be able to keep using it like that.
If yes, what cord(s) would I need to make this happen?
If no, is there any disadvantage to using a non-mac screen for a second display? (I'm a graphic designer, so little things like having the color exact on each screen are very important)
    Thanks for the help!

Is there any way to do it without lag? Right now it works, but its really annoying to have things so slow on the other screen.
Is there any way to hook them up so they work like an actual dual monitor setup (wired connection with no lag)?

  • Use old Windows laptop as second screen for Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I've recently bought a Macbook Pro (mid 2012, 13", 2,5 GHz). So I'm not using my Acer laptop anymore, but I've came across a discussion of people who extended their Mac screen on a Windows laptop. I've tried multiple VNC apps, but no decent results (lots of lag, only mirroring my screen and so on). So my question is: how can I use my Acer to act like a second screen (I prefer a LAN connection instead over WiFi)
    Thanks a lot!

    No can't be done.

  • What is the most efficient way to use my 2006ish iMac as a second screen for my MacBook pro?

    Hello.
My line of work really requires the use of two screens, and I have a macbook pro from 2010 and a white iMac from 2006, I believe. My editing software lives on my laptop, so I'd like to use my iMac as the second display. I can't seem to find any male mini dvi to male mini displayport cables online, so I have a feeling they don't exist. Should I just get a mini dvi (male) to dvi (female) for the iMac and a (male) dvi to (male) mini displayport for the laptop? Is this going to cause latency if I'm running videos? Help please!

Your iMac (from 2006) does not support Target Display Mode, that functionality only became available in Late 2009 with MiniDisplay Port. Even if you were to find a male-to-male cable the iMac isn't going to accept the video from the MacBook Pro in a method you're hoping to achieve (extended desktop mode). I've use ScreenRecycler and the lag is barely noticeable, I think even calling it "lag" is overkill.
If you need a second monitor for work that is apparently an important accessory, why are they not supplying with a second monitor? Even if you were to find a valid connection solution, it's response time would still be slower than a direct link from the MacBook Pro.

  • I have a spare Apple display screen an would like to make this a second screen for my iMac, would like some help on how to do this

I have a spare Apple display screen and would like to make this a second scren for my iMac,
would like to have some ideas on how to do this

First format the drive to OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
Next drag your iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the EHD.  When the copying is complete launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and in the window that comes up select the library on the EHD:
Check the file path under the window to make sure the correct library has been selected.
Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working properly and has all of your photos you can delete the library in your Pictures folder.

  • Unable to use my MacBook as second screen for my iMac with Thunderbolt connection.

    Hi,
I'm unable to connect my early 2009 iMac to my early 2011 MacBook Pro with thundercable to thundercable...
I want to use my MacBook Pro as second screen. I'm running Mavericks on both.
    Someone who can help me?
    Thanks a lot,
    Sam.

    Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs
You can use the iMac as a second display, not the other way around.

  • Second screen for Canvas setup??

Just got (for the first time) a second monitor (23" Cinema HD) and want to assign the Canvas to that monitor for better (full screen) edited viewing playback. How?
Mac Mini, PowerMac, G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I use 2 monitors...
    First go to system prefs...
    Displays...
    Arrangments...
Drag the menu bar to what monitor you whan to use it in...
You can drag one of the images of the monitor screen to the, right, top, bottom, and left, of the other monitor.
TURN MORROR DIPLAY OFF!!! (Uncheck it)
    Close prefs...
There more to play with in prefs, but this will get you going.
    Open FCP
Drag your windows were you want them.
    Menu-->Window-->Arrange-->Save Window Layout...Name it..Done
If for some reason FCP doesn't remember your window lay out when starting the program. Go back to Arrage in the menu bar and your setting will be in the drop down menu...fini
