Custom Book Printing

Hello
If I customize a book size (let's say 10 x 13) can apple print that book for me or do I have to print it myself?
Thanks

Apple only prints the pre-set sizes. There are companies that print other sized books (I'm rather fond of square books) but I can't recall seeing a printer that makes 10x13 books, so it's likely you'll need to print that yourself.

Sure - once you make a PDF you can e-mail or share it as you want - although they can be large so you need a share capability for large file

Does anyone know of who will print custom theme books created using Aperture ?
    Thanks in advance!

No, the built-in ordering system only supports the standard sizes.
If you can find another online book printer that directly supports PDFs you should be OK, but you'd still have to set the size of your book to their set sizes.

  • How do I get custom book themes to appear in Aperture?

I want to create two custom book themes in Aperture - A4 Landscape and A4 Portrait - so that I can print them on A4 photo paper. However, after creating the custom themes, they do not appear in the custom theme list which is preventing me from creating an A4 sized book. I closed and restarted Aperture and I have also closed and restarted my MacBook.
My Aperture version is 3.5.1 and I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1.
Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Regards
    Schof

Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Schof,
I will try your suggestion of creating a new Aperture library and let you know what happens.
If a new library does not fix it,  there is probably a permissions problem with your user library, or a problem with the "Books Theme" folder.
I'd try to trash the "Books Theme" folder:
    Quit Aperture.
    Delete your "Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes".
    Log off and on again.
    Create a new Custom Book.
Can you now see it in the "Themes" drop-down menu?
If that does not help, trash the preferences as well:
    Users/MacPro/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
and log off and on again, or restart the system.

  • Custom book export resolution problem in PDF - only 150DPI!?

I've been using the custom book option and when it came to exporting my PDF I have run into a problem involving the undocumented output resolution of a PDF at a given size. The custom book dialog allows you to create a book with a certain size in inches, but this really has no real meaning since the resolution of that output cannot also be specified in either the layout option or the print dialog. For example is it 150dpi or 300dpi? From some investigation it appears to be locked at 150DPI.
Now I would have thought that Aperture was intelligent enough to just treat the album layout (this is my assumption) as some kind of smart object, where the layout is resolution independent and the final output resolution can be determined when printing to a printer or PDF. In that case the dialog for the setup of the custom size is correct. However, there is no option that I can see in the print dialog to actually specify the output resolution; Aperture is left to its own devices to specify an output resolution, which is undocumented.
I use a printer that accepts JPG or TIF files and I need 300dpi for an album size of 10x13 inches. This equates to 3900x3000 pixels per page. I am able to export to PDF in the print dialog and then used an automator action to export each page of the PDF as JPG and reimported back into Aperture 2 in the same action. In the PDF>JPG conversion option there is the ability to set the DPI to 300. That works fine and the resulting JPG images show as 300dpi (3900x3000px). When looking at the images though they look a little soft, which leads me to believe that my action was simply interpolating a 150dpi image in the PDF into 300dpi.
So to test this, I noticed that if I exported just one page of the album as a PDF and opened the PDF in Preview it does indeed tell you that it is 13x10 inches (no mention of the pixel resolution though). So, you can actually reimport a single page PDF into Aperture and if you do this it appears that the actual resolution is 1950x1500 and that equates to 150dpi for a 13x10 inch layout.
So there are two things that could possibly be going on here:
    1. The actual layout of the album is locked at 150DPI and the save to PDF simply takes that and exports a PDF at that resolution.
    2. The layout of the album is resolution independent, the size of the album (in the custom dialog) simply controls the aspect of the page layout, and the print dialog (save to PDF) is exporting as 150DPI as default. When I run my automator action (these are the Leopard PDF actions), the save each page to JPG action is up-res'ing the image to 300dpi.
This is where I need help. Is 1 or 2 (or something else?) happening. Also, does the PDF save as JPG12? That too is undocumented.
If number 1 is happening I may have to set my album size to 26x20inches to get a 10x13 inch page at 300dpi.
If number 2 is happening I need to find a PDF/TIFF/JPEG print driver to enable me to export at 300dpi as the print dialog in not standard (and we don't get the nice 'save as' drop down where we could do other things. So far my search has led me to CUPS-PDF, but that still doesn't allow for resolution to be set: http://www.codepoetry.net/projects/cups-pdf-for-mosx
Why can't Apple just figure this thing out correctly and allow the resolution to be specified by the user - what an oversight given all of the feedback requests for the custom album tool. We need 300dpi as a minimum as we can always down-res if we want.
Any ideas? I've got albums to send to clients! Help!
    Thanks

When you import any PDF into Aperture, I think it rasterizes any PDF you import to a 150dpi flat image on import, even if it was a high res PDF to begin with. But theres the thing, PDFs don't have dpi (as such). Any shapes or text is a vector so don't have a DPI as they'll scale when printed. The images use their DPI when they were imported from the program that created the PDF.
So I did a quick test and put a page I made from Aperture in to Acrobat and ran a preflight check on all images to check the resolution. It came back at 349.956 ppi, so this example was over 350dpi.
    I've attached the screenshot

  • IPhoto Book Print - Rejected

    Sirs
Could you please help me with an issue that I currently have with iPhoto.
As a Christmas Present for my 6 year old daughter, I have created an iPhoto book of our recent trip to EuroDisney. I completed the book and purchased it via the Apple Store in iPhoto.
However, I have today received an email stating as follows:
    To Our Valued Apple Customer:
It appears that when your order was submitted to Apple, an error caused the
image file to be unreadable or unprintable. As a result, Apple is unable to
process your order and you will not be charged. We recommend the following
      before submitting your order:
      1. Update your software.
      2. Restart your computer.
      3. Make sure all applications are closed.
      4. Open iPhoto or Aperture.
      5. While all other applications are closed, preview your print product as a
      PDF.
      6. Resubmit your order.
While previewing and resubmitting your order, make sure all other applications
are closed. For instructions on how to update your software, refer to:
Mac OS X - Updating your software
      <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1338>
I have checked the version of my MacBook - it is OS X 10.7 and I have checked the version of my iPhoto - it is 9.1.5. When selecting purchase in iPhoto, it is stating that I need to upgrade to 9.2.3. However, when I attempt to check for new updates in iPhoto itself, it is stating that my version is the latest version. Furthermore, checking for software updates via the Apple logo does not bring up any update for iPhoto nor does any updates in my Application Store.
It seems as if I require an update but there are no ways in which I can update this.
Could someone please advise / assist as I desperately want to get this book printed.
    Many Thanks
    Paul

If you update your system to 10.7.5 with the OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) and OS X Lion 10.7.5 Supplemental Update updaters you can update your iPhoto version all the way to 9.4.2 thru the updaters availailable here: Apple - Support - Downloads-iPhoto 9.
But that's no guarantee that will fix the problem. If the problem image appears OK in a PDF preview of the book it should, as Larry pointed out, print out OK.  If it doesn't look OK in the PDF preview file export it out of iPhoto, open in Preview and export as a new, JPEG file.  Import it back into iPhoto, add to the book and replace the problem file with the newly created one.  Then create a new PDF file of the book and check that photo.

  • LR4 Custom book sizes

    Hello,
I've read several times that the only way to get a custom book size in the book module is to edit/create one in Illustrator or Scribus. In this interview with Kevin Tieskoetter he mentions that he would be documenting this process, so I imagine it's allready doable.
"All of the templates we ship with Lightroom are made using Illustrator, and I'll be documenting the process for creating those. We've also successfully made templates using InDesign and the freeware tool called Scribus, so if you need templates in different sizes, you'll have a range of options."
    http://www.pixiq.com/article/kevin-tieskoetter
I want to try this. But where do I find the files that I'm to edit? Where do they reside on my computer? I'm using a Mac OSX 10.6.8 and can't seems to find anything that resembles tenplate files. Not sure what I should be looking for?

Indeed ... Kevin T. made the promise of "documenting" the process in that article posted February 7, 2012 ... here it is August 13, 2012 ... still no documentation ... it must be extremely difficult to parse this information ... I would think he could have found the time in over a six month period to share the info ... and they say Apple is a secretive company ...
The templates are stored somewhere within the content folder of the Lightroom application itself ... while I have peeked there myself, I wouldn't recommend poking around there until we have the proper steps available ... it could be very rsiky to the app as a whole if one would make an error in the process of creating a custom template ...
In fact ... this customization should have been built within the module itself ... and should have been the very first feature implemented ... but then it wouldn't have been in Blurb's best interest if users could use any printer service they liked ...

  • Custom Book sizes, price

Aperture 2 lets you do custom book sizes. Is there a limit to the size they can be? I did one at 40"x40". What is the price for a book this large? I can't find it anywhere.

They do not offer book output for custom sized books.
They only offer the same iPhoto sizes. I wonder if they still stick the apple logo on the back?
Send that monster 40"x40" book to a album printing company, if you can find one that will print that size!

  • Create non-apple custom books for Aperture

I am working in a small company providing the photo book printing.
We have the custom-sized books which can be imported via file->import library/project
How can I create something like Graphistudio. They provide the aperture plug-in which creates the special folder with pictures in the book section
Thank for any help in this situation: even giving the e-mail to write to would be great!

To write a plugin for Aperture first you need to download the Aperture SDK. Then you'll need Xcode and a good knowledge of Coca and Objective-C
If your company is serious about this you should join the Mac Developers program. Once you're a member you'll have access to discussion lists that are only open to developers. You'll get much better information there about things programming.

  • What is the cost of a custom book (13 x 10) in Aperature 2

    iPhoto offers a new 13 x 10 photo book.
Aperature does not...but offers a "custom" option to print a book to your specifications.
Anyone know how much a 13 x 10 "custom" Aperature book would cost for the typical 20 page standard book?

USA - already checked out that link
That link only shows size possibilities for print and the standard book sizes.
I'm looking for Aperature based book prices other than the 8.5 x 11....specifically if I made a "custom" size book in Aperature.
Has anyone made a "custom" book using the dedicated "custom-sized menu" in Aperature....and how much was it?
The reason I'm using Aperature intead of iPhoto for my larger book is it's advanced page layout features and 2-page bleed possibilities. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll make a PDF in InDesign or Photoshop and send it somewhere else for printing. Why would Apple make a larger 13 x 10 size for iPhoto and not for Aperature......tell me

  • Unable to "Buy Book" after Creating a Custom Book

I just created a custom book with the required minimum number of pages, but the option to "Buy the Book" is not available to me. Is there something else I need to do? I'm pretty new to Aperture. Any help would be appreciated!

I find the custom book feature very very useful in Aperture. To date I have always had books created through a local printer (their quality and binding format is excellent). I build the book in Aperture (custom as I prefer A4 portrait), use the PDF output option and then give the printers the PDFs which they then print to create the book.
I have thought about trying the Apple service but an unsure of the "suede-like" cover and prefer hard back. Might try the soft covers. But anyway, other book printers are happy to take the PDF output (e.g. my local printers, Blurb and probably others).

  • Book printing and paper orientation

    Hi all,
I used to print DVD covers via custom book format for wedding DVDs. But since the last Aperture update it seems aperture does not print with the right orientation. Paper format is A4 portrait but the book page gets cut off because it printed landscape on the paper.
    Any ideas?

As a work around I'm now printing the book nad save it as a PDF which I then print with "Preview". However, no one out there with this problem?

    Greetings,
The last time I saw a question on this topic it was a bit over 2 years ago so the answer may have changed but yes, Canadian book orders are printed in Canada.  As far as taxes, what you see in the order window is the total for the book in your region.
To find out for sure before you order, contact Apple Store Customer service for Canada and indicate you want to ensure that the total dollar amount indicated in the order window is indeed what you will be charged (I would assume it is otherwise there would be lots of people yelling about it).
    Cheers.

  • How to Create a Custom Canvas Print Order System

    Hi,
I own a canvas print website but if anyone wants to order a 'custom' canvas print from their own photo they have to email me and I add effects and email them back. I'd like to move away from this and setup an automated system in Flash where the user can upload their image, select their canvas size, apply some effects, and then order online.
If you Google 'photos on canvas' there are literally loads of websites that have this functionality. I've got the time and will to learn & build my own version, and after looking at quite a few implementations I think Flash will be the best format to build this in (and I like the idea of keeping it all within the Flash environment rather than mixing php & javascript). www  dot canvasdezign dot co dot uk/yourphotos.php is a good example - they use uploadify to upload the image and then its all in flash from there on.
I'd really appreciate it if any of you guys could point me in the right direction of where you think I should start with this project, and how you'd approach it? I'm relatively new to Flash but find with any new language the best way to learn is 'on the job'. I know that image handling can be difficult in any language so if there's a 'good' way of approaching this then I'd love to learn of it now rather than further down the line.
As a first step I'd like to get it working without the option of adding fancy effects to the images - a nice and simple image upload > select size > resize image to fit > save & upload image (actually, probably a more realistic first step will be having a single standard size rather than options).
Any pointers on how to approach this would be really appreciated. I'm using Flash Professional CS5.5 with ActionScript 3.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
