Custom Button Problems

I am trying to make a program that is similar to paint right now. I made this class to be able to edit how big the drawing tool is:

}When I add an ActionListener to it, in the actionPerformed method, I set the width of the drawing tool using the getValue() method. The problem is, when I click and drag to outside the button, the value doesnt change. Can anyone help me fix this?

Short answer: you should add:
setFocusPainted(false);Long answer is I'm not even 100% sure why you painting code works.
a) first you do you custom painting in the paintComponent() method
b) then you invoke super.paintComponent(). I would expect that this should override your custom painting and paint the button normally, except without a border, since you also overrode that method.
So then I tried commenting out the super.paintComponent() method call and painting still seemed to be ok.
Then I thought to myself, if I don't invoke super.paintComponent() then why do I need to use:
setContentAreaFilled(false);
setFocusPainted(false);
So I commented them out. It appears to paint correctly, but as soon as you click on the button the right edge gets all messed up. I'm confused. Why should commenting out those methods affect the painting since we never invoke the default painting? Anyway I just happened to increase the width of the frame and the button got painted correctly again. So I'm not sure exactly whats happening.
