Custom Finder Icons

Hi,
Does anyone know how to create custom icons for various finder items, such as folders or documents?
A friend of mine transferred a folder to me a few weeks ago that was different from the standard.
I'd also like to assign different icons to various Pages docs if possible.
Thanks for your help.
Rich

Hi Rich,
Just "Get Info" on the file or folder (command-i) and paste your icon into the small square at the upper left. You can get sets of new icons at many sites, like Iconfactory. Also, you have icons for everything on your Mac in the system. Take a look at /System/Library/CoreServices to start.
EDIT: Also, /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle (right-click on this to "Show package contents" then follow rest of path)/Contents/Resources.

  • Custom Finder Icon with menu

    Hi everyone,
I've just found a way to show/hide the hidden files with two little scripts and I wanted to add an icon in my finder's toolbar called "Hidden Files" with a submenu with two elements: "Show" and "Hide", each of these items launching one of my scripts. Could anyone give me an idea of how to do this ?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hello,
In your custom HTML from your custom StoreFront you have to link the AdobeLibraryAPI.js first and use this code to use external links :
    <div id='myButton'>
         <span  class='myStyle' onClick='adobeDPS.dialogService.openExternal(\"MY_HTML_GLOBAL_LINK\")'>myTextIfNeeded</sp an>
    </div>"

  • Using Custom Icons - Changing the Finder Icon

So I know you can just do a simple copy and paste under "get info" in order to change icons for applications and folders, but how do you do this for Finder? I know this is possible, if not for the simplest reason that one of the downloads that Apple has featured on this site for icons has a Finder icon (bad logic I know, but it seems odd that Finder would be the only icon you couldn't change). The problem is, how do you "Get Info" on Finder? Where would you find finder (no pun intended)?
    Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the help in finding the icon, the only problem is that it won't let me alter it. I even changed permissions on the bottom of the "get info" screen to allow the current user (also the administrator) to both read and write, but it wouldn't let me paste a different styled icon over it. Any suggestions on how to change the Finder icon to a custom one? And ya we were thinking about how we would change it back too, but realized its not really that big of an issue because all our friends and even we have multiple macs, so we could always just copy it back that way.

  • Finder Icon will not change! Please help!

I have been customizing the look of of my dockbar on my imac by giving all of my apps new ios 7 style icons.
Yesterday I changed my Finder icon with no problem at all by going to:
    System→Library→Core Services→(right click 'Dock'→Show Package Contents)→Contents→Resources.
And replacing the two png files (finder.png) and ([email protected]) with my new images. Yesterday I did this all perfectly fine and it changed to my new icon.
However today I found a better finder icon and decided to change it again to this new version. However what ever I try it will not change to this new icon.
I have followed the exact same steps as before, I have replaced my two png files from yesterday with my new ones and I have checked and re-checked that I am naming the files correctly, and that they are the right format etc.
I have even deleted my original icons that I changed it to yesterday and emptied them from the trash but it is still there even after restarting and shutting down and rebooting.
I have also tried going to terminal and typing 'killall Dock', it still returns with the same icon that I changed it to yesterday, even though I have deleted them from my hard drive.
Please help me this is so frustrating and have wasted many many hours on this.
    (I am on mavericks btw)

  • Using FIND icon in Oracle Apps 11i

I have a custom 6i form in Orcale Apps 11i which uses a search screen to find matching records. Once I open up the main form, I want to be able to go back to the search screen using the FIND icon in the toolbar (right below the Edit button). I am not sure if I have to modify the custom.pll library to do that? How do I achieve that functionality?

    Hi,
I would try this question on an Oracle Applications forum here on OTN.

  • Preventing Custom / Preview icons

    Hello
I am running Mac OS X 10.5.7 and want the Operating System to leave my icons alone. For example, I prefer my PDF documents to have the generic Adobe PDF icon instead of a custom icon indicative of what's in the document. Likewise with my other document types!
I want to do this for two reasons:
    1. My computer would start up a lot quicker if it didn't spend all that time converting icons to their custom "preview" icons.
    2. It would be easier to quickly identify at a glance what type of documents I'm looking at.
I thought there was a setting somewhere in preferences, but can't seem to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Hi Joe,
That setting is configured on a per-folder basis. With said folder open in its own window, bring up the 'View Options' from the 'View' menu and uncheck "Show icon preview" box. Should you want this to be your default setting, click on the "Use as defaults" button.

  • Simple Finder - Icon's Missing but Application Works

I've got a number of applications on my kids two accounts that under the simple finder they show up as the blank page with the alias icon. I've tried repairing permissions, selecting/unselecting the setup and I've been unable to figure out how to get them back.
The accounts are set up as simple finder, and to limit the applications. I have checked the apps in question and even checked/unchecked them trying to 'reset' them.
    Any suggestions?

Was it candybar that deleted your finder icon?
if so you just drag the custom icon (which is blank for the size you are using it in probably, reference picture) will POOF and your system icon should be restored. THEN you killAll Dock, which candybar does for you.
which version of CandyBar do you have? the latest is the only one that will work effectivly on Lion.
in icon composer, and when you preview an icon, you'll see that it is really a container with multiple images. A reason why your icons are coming up blank might be that the spaces for the the other icon sizes are empty. if you go into Icon Composer, you can drag in the other sizes and save as an ico. Then you'll have a working icon.

  • Lost Finder Icons

I've lost the Pictures, Document, Music and Movies icons off my Finder. I think they were simply dragged off and 'poof'... they were gone. Is there anyway to restore these or select those icons for a different folder?

The Finder automatically assigns the cool icons when you drag one of the appropriate folders out of your home folder into the Sidebar. It may be necessary to restart the Finder to force it to recognize things and update, but it should recognize them all on its own. The only thing that could happen is if you changed the original name in any way whatsoever. But if the Movies folder in your home folder is showing a custom folder icon there, then it should show the custom toolbar badge when you drag it into the Sidebar. If it doesn't show the custom badge icon, and you have restarted, you could try removing these:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist"
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
Then restart. This will return everything to the default.

  • Retaining Custom made Icons For Automator Apps

Hello, I've noticed that when I give a custom made icon to an Automator app, it will display it on my Mac but when I send it to someone, it's original icon is displayed. Is there any way to have it display the custom made icon even when I send it to someone else?

    Jerry,
I suspect you are using the old trick from the Classic OS of just transferring the icons between the Info windows.
I think there is a way to retain that icon but it is quite involved. I haven't tried this so just guessing at this point.
The normal icon for the Automator app is stored in the package that is created when you save the completed workflow. You can get access to the package by using the Show Package Contents contextual menu item in the Finder.
Inside the package you will find a number of files and folders. Within the Resources folder you will find two files related to the icons for the package, one for the Applet and one for documents.
The Applet icon file is the one that you need to work on and change to retain your modified icon. There is a little utility called Icon Composer that is an Apple product available on my machine in the Open with dropdown contextual menu. This might have been installed with the Developer tools though.
Within Icon Composer you can replace the icons within the Applet file and they should stick upon transfer to another machine. Here is the description within the help files of Icon Composer.
"You need to give IconComposer at least one image to generate an icon (.icns) file. However, you should provide four different versions of the icon. IconComposer optimizes each version for rendering at the resolutions of 128x128 pixels, 48x48 pixels, 32x32 pixels, and 16x16 pixels.
If you give IconComposer only one image, it should be optimized to look best at 128x128 pixels. This ensures it looks goods when displayed at the maximum resolution of 128x128 pixels, and looks acceptable when scaled down to the smaller resolutions.
If you supply different sizes of the icon to IconComposer, you should also provide 1-bit image masks for the three smaller resolutions. An image mask defines what parts of the icon are clickable. Assuming the color black is used to compose the image mask, any areas that are colored black in the mask define which parts of the icon can receive mouse clicks.
IconComposer can create icons from the following image formats: GIF, JPEG, PDF, PICT, PNG, TIFF, and any of the QuickTime-supported image formats. To create the actual icon file, drag the icon images to the corresponding image wells in IconComposer. Then choose Save from the File menu, which prompts you to name the icon file and choose a location for it."
So as you can see it could be quite involved.
It might be easier to develop a method to automate what you are currently doing and provide the people with a blank file that has the other icon to transfer.

  • Convert Windows folder.jpg into OS X custom folder icon

    Hello everyone,
after months reading numerous post on the Web trying to find a way to convert the Windows "folder.jpg" into an OS X custom folder icon, I've come up with a solution using only the shell. Some users proposed using the Automator, which caused me lots of trouble (Spotlight sometimes wouldn't find the folder, or would return a Privacy error, and so on). Therefore, my solution uses only a Shell script with dependencies on some external libraries (most of them allowing to manipulate images and icons).
    Here's the code on Pastebin.
I hope this will be as helpful for you as it was for me. It allowed me to apply the custom folder icons to thousands of folders, including the local Mac folders as well as the one on external storage (USB or LAN).

  • Finder icon missing in dock

    Hello,
The icon of finder is missing in the dock, there is still a white dot below what means that finder is still running and I can open it but it annoys me that the icon just dissappeared. I tried a lot of things like deleting the plists from the dock and finder, or open terminal and killall Dock, doesn't work either. I tried to reset my icon with candybar, searched the Core Services map and also I can't find the solution here. Logout and login won't work. I replaced the Finder icon but also that is no option. I want to find a solution without reseting or installing my OS X Lion, because I think there must be something that should work. So if there is anyone who had the problem too or knows a solution that works for real, please tell me!
    Already thanks!
    Kind regards,
    Vincent

  • Blank and/or Invisble Finder Icons

A long long long time ago, in the wonderful OS 8/9 days, one was able to copy/paste a blank icon
The result would be the object with just the name; which is usable, click-able, move-able, launch-able.. just doesn't have a visible icon...
I found this really really neat since I just typed the file name and the Finder would highlight it, then Apple O to launch it... frees up the mouse hand.
Anyone know if it's still do-able?
I do google searches but find mostly how to make custom transparent icons like you see now a days, which are real nice.... but i'm looking for just a plain old BLANK one.
    Thanks in advance!!!

    Hey!
Yeah I know about typing away in the Finder but this what I'm looking for has no real function except for cosmetic reasons.
Right now... I have a black desktop background photo and have changed the icons on my desktop (the one I never move) into a black icon and this results to just the name of the object in white on the Desktop.
I would like to use other desktop backgrounds. If I do now, i will see all those icons I have changed to black.
The blank/transparent/invisible or whatever you want to call it from the old days was great!
    I know it's campy & childish, but I am a Mac user.
    Thanks!

  • The Finder Icon "jumped" off my dock..how do i get it back?

Hi. I just got my new MacBook earlier today and I was moving some of the dock icons around and somehow the Finder icon "jumped" off the dock and is now no longer selectable. It just sits on the desktop and hovers above all other programs but behind the dock. I can't click on it or move it or even select it using the lassoo, so any ideas what I could try? Or anybody have a clue what happened/has this happened to anyone before?
    here's a picture:
It's not like it's something I could've manually removed. I've tried moving the finder before and you can't do it. (this isn't my first OS X mac)
I'm just as baffled as you are.

  • How Can I Remove the Finder Icon From the Dock?

Hi! Can someone tell me how to remove the Finder icon from the dock? I don't even care if Finder quits. I just want it removed from the dock. I really don't care if I can't get to my files. Please help.

Start by going to your core services, (/system/library/coreservices). You can do this by pressing Shift+Cmd+G and then paste (/system/library/coreservices), without parentheses.
After doing this, find Dock.app, right click, show package contents. This doesn't contain the icons on your dock, just finder and trash.
After that, move all finder services to the desktop, and then erase them from the core services folder. At this point it will prompt you to put in your password, do so.
Next you'll want to open terminal and type 'killall dock' or, you could restart your computer.
This should remove the finder icon from your dock, while still giving you access to it from your desktop.
    Hope this helps!
