Custom genres

Hello, with my 30G iPod is it possible to have a song in more than one genre? How do I go about setting it up, will the song show up in 2 separate ones or am I just creating a new genre. For an example, Pat Benatar's song "Invincible" is a soundtrack song as well as a rock song, how do I make that song appear in 2 separate genre? Thanks for your time

about all you can do is type in something like "Soundtrack/Rock", but keep in mind that it will create a whole new genre, and the song won't come up under the Rock or Soundtrack genres.

  • Custom Genre Not Showing Up In Apple's Music App [02/20/2015]

    Hello, I have the iPad mini 2 Model: A1489 16GB @ iOS 8.1.3
    I have made 2 custom genres that show up just fine in the Genres tab with every song belonging to these respectable genres. I also have 'Instrumental' and 'Piano' genres that I'm not sure if qualifies as custom genres, but they work well too.
    However, my latest custom genre 'A Cappella' is not showing up with the rest of the genres. The 1 album that I have for this genre shows up in the Albums tab and the songs show up in the Songs tab. The album also shows up after selecting the artist in the Artists tab, but does not show up in Genres.
    There are 2 songs in this genre, but they are my favorite and I want to be able to get to them quickly. ^.^
    The genre does show up in iTunes, Windows Media Player, and the Meta Data is all there when I look at the properties of the files. I can't seem to find out what other differences the working genres' and the non-working genre's songs have except that they have different genres.
    Every song on my Ipad has the same Artist. <<<<(If that helps....)
    Thank you for your help, whoever helps.

    This may be an issue with the ID3 tag format standards and Apple can't change those. But you can ask:

  • Custom genres not saved

    Hi,
    I decided to replace the default "Classical" Genre by something more specific in my iTunes music collection but find that the changes are not saved in the database for existing titles. A number of new entries added since and assigned to the new custom genres are correct, and all custom genres added are also in the list; it is only with the older titles that the change of genres is not saved but always reset to "Classical" when I close the menu.
    Apart from that I would have expected that I can also search the database by genre, but this is not the case.
    I consider both of these issues, especially the first one, a bug. Is that the case or am I doing something wrong? I'm using iTunes 10.1 (54).

    First thing:
    Are you saying that if you modify a song's info and change the Genre it does not accept the change?

  • I use a lot of custom genres for sorting.  iTunes has recently been changing the genres of 200  songs back to their default every time I update.  How can I lock in my custom genres?

    How do I lock in custom genres so iTunes doesn't change them?

    The most likely cause is that affected songs are iTunes Store purchases (or are being matched to the Store).  To prevent the Store metadata over-riding yours, set the following options to OFF in Edit > Preferences > Store:
    Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases
    Share details of your library with Apple
    Exit iTunes, when you start it again you should see your metadata selections and these should now be stable.  Also, if you have any iOS devices select Settings > Music and turn the Show All Music option OFF.  This should maintain your genre selections as well as any other changes you make to Artist, Album Artist, Album settings, etc.

  • Edit custom genre problem[Java]

    I am trying to edit the custom genre of mp3 files like "Welcome" using mp3agic library but it is not working.
    https://github.com/mpatric/mp3agic
    Mp3Filemp3file=newMp3File("SomeMp3File.mp3");
    if (mp3file.hasId3v2Tag()) {
      ID3v2 id3v2Tag = mp3file.getId3v2Tag();
      System.out.println("Track: " + id3v2Tag.getTrack());
      System.out.println("Artist: " + id3v2Tag.getArtist());
      System.out.println("Title: " + id3v2Tag.getTitle());
      System.out.println("Album: " + id3v2Tag.getAlbum());
      System.out.println("Year: " + id3v2Tag.getYear());
      System.out.println("Genre: " + id3v2Tag.getGenre() + " (" + id3v2Tag.getGenreDescription() + ")");
      System.out.println("Comment: " + id3v2Tag.getComment());
      System.out.println("Composer: " + id3v2Tag.getComposer());
      System.out.println("Publisher: " + id3v2Tag.getPublisher());
      System.out.println("Original artist: " + id3v2Tag.getOriginalArtist());
      System.out.println("Album artist: " + id3v2Tag.getAlbumArtist());
      System.out.println("Copyright: " + id3v2Tag.getCopyright());
      System.out.println("URL: " + id3v2Tag.getUrl());
      System.out.println("Encoder: " + id3v2Tag.getEncoder());
      byte[] albumImageData = id3v2Tag.getAlbumImage();
      if (albumImageData != null) {
       System.out.println("Have album image data, length: " + albumImageData.length + " bytes");
       System.out.println("Album image mime type: " + id3v2Tag.getAlbumImageMimeType());
    I can edit album, artist,track, etc but cannot add custom genre. How can i do that?
    Thanks

    I have searched a lot on internet but cannot find any api to do this. Can somebody suggest my one ?
    You are still free to pull the code of the API you already found and add support for changing the particular property you are missing yourself. Be part of the solution, so to say.
    Is this for your own MP3 collection? There are plenty of readily available free tools that can already do this job.

  • Cannot play my custom genres like I used to, wonder what has changed?

    Bought this new ipod Touch 5 and synced with my itunes.  The songs have synced properly, but when I used the Genres option, I'm able to find the custom genres I created, but there are no songs under them?  I can access the same songs when I go through the albumns option.  Frustrating.  Anyone run into this?

    Just foundout what the problem was!  It's pretty simple, but yet cryptic that Apple does not provide proper HELP file.
    Went to Settings/Music and turned off "Group By Album Artist," and then I started seeing all of my music under the custom Genres!
    Pretty simple.  Hope this helps others who may have accidentally turned that feature on!

  • How to cleanup the "custom" genre list

    The genre custom list is very large and has many in there that I don't use or want. Is there a way to remove some of these?
    Thanks!

    I'm afraid you are misinterpreting the list. Custom is at the top and when you click on it it allows you to type in a genre of your own making. Unless you have made some custom genres all of the genres on the list you are seeing are the default ones. I have read few methods for removing entries from the list but they all involve editing preference files which I wouldn't recommend unless you are very sure of what you are doing.

  • My customized genres get changed back to the iTunes default genre

    I customize my genres, I find the genres provided by iTunes to be insufficiently accurate. Every time I buy new music from iTunes - or download previously purchased content - my genres are set back to the original iTunes genre.
    When I play a track with a changed-back genre it once again reverts to the genre I assigned it. But I am now into thousands of tracks that have customized genres, so I've begun avoiding iTunes and buying from Amazon simply to avoid contact between my iTunes application and the iTunes store, so that it doesn't set back my customized genres.
    Not sure that was clear:  Example:
    I bought Lou Reed's "Hudson Wind Meditations" in the iTunes store, and I download it to my iTunes software so I can sync with my iPod and iPhone. The genre it is assigned by iTunes is "World." I consider this the default genre.
    I don't consider it "World" music, and want to find it along with my other Lou Reed tracks when sorting by genre, so I change the genre to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY". I have a number of customized genres.
    The next time I buy and/or download anything from the iTunes store, all my customized genres are reset to what to the default genres the tracks had upon purchase.  - This is highly frustrating, because I have given thousands of tracks customized genres. So after downloading something from the iTunes store, my Lou Reed "Hudson Wind Meditation" shows the genre as the default genre again, in this case it says "World" again.
    Oddly enough, if I play a track that had a custom custom genre but that was changed back after contact with the iTunes store, it reverts back to the customized genre. So if I play the Lou Reed track again, it changes back to my customized genre as soon as I hit play (it would change back to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY".
    It isn't a tenable solution to hit play on every track after every new download. Nor is going back in and re-customizing every album in a bulk move.
    Can I lock genres? Help please.
    iTunes 11.2.2 running on 10.9.4, but it's been doing this for several iterations.

    Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and turn off
    Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
    Share details about your library with Apple
    On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
    Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.
    (Not sure if this also works if iTunes match is in use since I don't use it.)

  • Messed up custom genres in iPad Air

    I have created custom genres and recategorized genres of purchased music. They all looked fine in my PC. But when synced to iPad Air, they are all messed up. For example, my "Dance" music ended in "Korean". Could someone please advise? Thanks

    As far as I know there is no way to remove them other than one by one by touching the 'i' to the right of th email.

  • 6.0.4 Custom Genre - New Feature ?

    Can anyone explain what the new (I think it's new) GENRE is - called CUSTOM. You cannot select it, or delete it. Are we finally going to get the multiple genres we have been hoping for ? Any ideas anyone ?

    Don't know what it is, but it's there in 6.0.3.
    It's something though, because it's not in the alphabetical listing. Maybe some obscure id3 tag?

  • Editing genres.plist to add custom genre icons

    I found a tutorial that shows how to add a few lines of code to the genres.plist file and thereby change the icon for the genre within iTunes.
    I tried it for the 'Folk' and 'Alternative' genres, and it worked fine.
    But when I tried it for 'Punk Rock' or 'Grunge' it didn't work. In fact, the 'Punk Rock' genre reverted to the icon for 'Alternative' and the 'Grunge' icon used a default album cover from that genre.
    I'm guessing this has something to do with the fact that the two genres which worked are default iTunes genres, whereas the latter are custom user-made genres.
    Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

    Ok. I made two changes and the results worked.
    First, I guessed that maybe there was only room for so many genre icons so I deleted two that I'd never use from the genres.plist file. Then I noticed that near the end of the code, the alternative.jpg was being used for a variety of other genres, so I deleted that altogether.
    I don't know if any of that was redundant or not, but as I said, it worked.

  • Apple Remote App not reflecting recently added genres

    During the initial round of cataloging movies, etc. and adding some custom genres, they were immediately reflected on the Apple Remote App.  However, subsequent additional genres are not showing up.  If I use the trackpad interface of the Ipad to navigate the Apple TV menus, the new genres are there...they just aren't on reflected on the remote app.
    Any ideas?

    You are not alone. I tried all the fixes, multiple times, but nothing worked.
    I think there's nothing to do but wait. The fact that many of us are experiencing the same problem with the iPad Remote app, and the fact that the iPhone Remote app still works fine, tells me it's a glitch in the software - maybe Apple TV 5.2, maybe iOS 6.1 (I updated to both yesterday).
    Meanwhile, since Apple does not read these forums, I suggest we all leave comments on their feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
    That way they'll at least know a bunch of us are having this issue.
    Hopefully Apple will issue a fix soon.

  • How do i make an icon for a new genre

    I'd like to create a new genre in iTunes for my collection,  and would like to create an "icon" similiar to the ones that are plugged into iTunes already.  I know if there isn't one it will default to an album cover.  Is there a way of doing this?  I want to make a genre for 'meditation', which I know how to do...I just want it to display like the other genres.
    Thanks in advance,
    GuiseppeNW

    iTunes comes with a limited number of pre-defined genre images aka badges. Some of these images are associated with more than one genre, e.g. Alternative is connected to Alternative, Alternative & Punk, Alternative Country, Alternative Folk, Alternative Metal, Alternative Pop/Rock, Alternative Punk, Alternative Rock, AlternRock, Punk, Punk Rock, Punk/Folk, Punk/Folk/Reggae and no doubt many others that aren't represented in my library. The dance image is linked to Dance, House, Techno & Trance or genres begining with those words.
    If there is no default icon for a particular genre then itunes will display a cover from one of the albums with that genre. If you run your mouse pointer slowly across the image from one side to the other it will change to display the covers of each of the albums in that genre in turn. You can right/option click on any of these to Set Default Grid Artwork and that image will then be used to represent that genre. Use Clear Default Grid Artwork to reset things.
    If you want to add your own custom genre badges, using artwork that is not in your albums, then place the images you want to use in the folder C:\Program Files\itunes\iTunes.Resources and edit the file C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\Genres.plist using something like Notepad++ to connect the required genres to your new images.

  • Movie Genres

    iTunes obviously has some preloaded movie genres. If you add a new movie and select the right genre it shows the iTunes icon for that genre when the "Genres" tab is selected. If you enter a genre that is not preloaded into iTunes (such as "Suspense"), it just gives the icon of whatever movie you have labeled as "Suspense". Is there a way (other than trial and error) to find out what genres are preloaded into iTunes and is there a way to form custom genres that have the same icon format as the preloaded genre icons?

    Find the artwork you want in the proper shape. Label it "genre-xxxxM.jpg". (Replace xxxxx with the genre name you want. Drag it into the resources folder I mentioned above.
    Click on the genres.plist file in the same folder. It will open in Text Edit.
    Add the following for each genre you want to add:
    <dict>
    <key>matchString</key><string>xxxxx</string>
    <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-xxxxx.jpg</string>
    <key>kind</key><string>movie</string>
    </dict>
    Use the tab key to align the new entry with the others, and save the file. You can insert the new entry between any of the original entries.
    If you want an image for music genres, do the same thing, but do not put the "M" in the image title and do not add the "<key>kind</key><string>movie</string>" line in the .plist file entry.
    Restart iTunes and enjoy your new images. Keep in mind that an iTunes update will replace all your hard work, save a copy of the new "resources" folder separate from your iTunes application.
    Thanks for your question. Gave me a couple hours of work this afternoon. I found some good .jpg
    files using Google Image Search.

  • ITunes changing movie genre

    I appears that iTunes Rev 11.1.5 and earlier has been changing my DvD movie genres in my library. I can set the genre and come back weeks later and they all seem to default to Action & Adventure which happens to be the first custom genre in my list. This issues has been happening for several iTunes revs now. I have a large movie collection so going back and reentering the genres is not a solution. The issue voids me of any genre sorting.

    1. iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTumes Media folder when adding to library [ CHECK ]
    2. Do a iTunes menu File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files
    and then try again.
