How is this effect achieved...

On the fading white circular shape, the gradient wraps around in a circle following its path giving the illusion of a fading "tail"
How is this done?
Anyone?

You can achieve the same effect with a blend.
Draw two rectangles, one black, one white
Go to Object > Blend > Make blend
Draw a circle, select the blend and the circle, and choose Object > Blend > Replace Spine
Using the scissors tool, cut the circle in one place
If it doesn't look right, check the orientation in Blend options that it is Align to path

You may use a smooth blend between a dark/black solid fill object with the full width and a white narrow fill object in the middle.
Yoy may:
1) Create the full width object with the bend, remember to have two anchor points at the inner corner, on top of each other if it is to be sharp; you may create it with a surplus length, see below;
2) With 1) selected, Object>Path>Offset Path by a negative value equalling half the width less a point or so, to create the inner fill path, then turn it white;
3) You may ClickDrag across each end of the paths with the Line Segment Tool, then Object>Path>Divide Objects Below and delete the unwanted end parts;
4) Object>Blend>Objects, use Smooth and Align to Path;
5) Object>Blend>Make.

Photo Booth - Custom Sound Effect?

Is there any way I can set Photo Booth to play a custom sound effect each time a photo is taken rather than the default shutter sound?

Work with a COPY of Photo Booth.app so that you can revert to the original behavior if you don't like the results.
Under Leopard, it's a simple matter of digging into Photo Booth.app and replacing the shutter sound-- /Applications/Photo Booth.app/Contents/Resources/photo_shutter.aiff -- with another short AIFF of the same name and in the same format (8 bit, mono, 8 KHz).
Replace photo_shutter.aiff with any sound you choose. You do have to give it the same name so that the program can find it.
Snow Leopard has tightened up code-signing. The above modification will probably break the app under SL, though it does work under Leopard.

CS4 Custom Gradient

Has anyone else seen this? In CS4 Extended, when I create a custom gradient the dialog box OK & Cancel buttons become inactive & there is no way to get out of the dialog (and save the new gradient without saving to disk -- I just want it for this project, not saved, just to use).
Seems consistent -- don't know if it's a CS4 bug or just my system. I'd love to know if others can create custom gradients or not.

Just checked by the way & this only happens after a new gradient is created. When the dialog is first opened, before creating the new gradient, it closes just fine, but once there's an new gradient the buttons become inoperative...

I cannot save custom lighting effects in Photoshop CS4

Under Filters>Render>Lighting Effects.
Whenever I try to save a custom lighting effect in Photoshop CS4 an error message pops up saying "An error occurred while trying to save the style."
I am using an iMAC.
Video display card / driver version: ATY,RadeonX1600

I solved the problem by deleting my original user account, but saving all my files first. I created a new account with adminstrative access, then opened up my old user files from the Deleted User folder and dragged them over to my new user account. The problem with saving custom lighting effects in Photoshop is fixed. Thanks for the tip leading me to realize it was the user profile causing the problem and not Adobe PS.

Custom gradients that follow an object from start to finish?

I want to create special shapes, with custom gradients that follow the object from start to finish.
I manage to do this for a single line using an artwok pencil (see "Custom gradient" in image below), but not for a more complicated shape (see "The shape I want" in image below as an example)
Help would be very muh appreciated!

Creating gradient effect in dreamweaver

please somebody help me.can we create gradient effect for buttons and background in dreamweaver.without using image editng softwares like photoshop or fireworks?

No, Dreamweaver is a html editor not a graphics program :-)
You need to use a graphics program to create the gradient image and then use it as a background image to whatever element you want to apply it to.

Angle Gradient Effect in Illustrator

Hi,
I am trying to acheive the same angle gradient effect that can be done in Photoshop but in Illustrator. The actual thing I want to be able to create as a vector is the graphic attached...
Can this be done by somehow using the blend tool and replacing the spline with a circle? Can someone walk me through the process?

This thread is 4 years old but here is a solution to make angle gradients in Illustrator CS6 and CC, which now have the capability to apply gradients on strokes.
1. Make a circle and give it a stroke equal to half its size and align stroke to center.
Example: 100px circle with a 50px stroke.
2. Apply a linear gradient that has the same color on the starting and ending stops (if you want a seamless gradient) and apply gradient along stroke.
3. Apply Path > Effect > Offset Path half the amount of the stroke size and make it a negative value so the path offsets inward.
4. Done!

PS CS3 Gradient Effect

I'm trying to do a gradient effect on the image below. What I'd like to have is the red strip to fade in from the left to right. I'm not sure how to do this. I tried using the Gradient Effect with the transparent to color but it's not giving me the effect I want. Please help. Thanks!

Try the following.
Make your shape layer just as you did.
1. At the bottom of the layers palette, where is says FX,
   choose blending options.
2. In the blending options dialog, set the fill opacity to 0% and uncheck
    Blend interior effects as group.
3. Select the Gradient overlay and in the dropdown where it says gradient, choose
    Foreground to transparent. Adjust the options as desired. (you can move the gradient
    on image by moving it in the document window)

How to apply gradient effect to JTable

It is easier to apply gradient effect to JTable by overriding paintComponent() and giving gradient effect using the following code
Graphics2D g2 = gradientImage.createGraphics();
GradientPaint painter = new GradientPaint(0, 0, gradientEnd,

but my problem is , after applying gradient effect the cell contents are not visible.
what i need to do to make the cells visible..... please any one help me to sort out this.....

Well the basic code should be:

And you may also need to make the table non-opaque.

Save a custom gradient map

I can't figure out how to save a custom gradient map using the gradient map tool(image>adjustments>gradient map).
So that I can use it on other images. Mac/CS6. I have tried countless times, but can't figure it out. What seems like it should work doesn't I can never find/load the custom gradient map I create.?

Select the Gradient tool from behind the Paint Bucket.
Click on the gradient in the Options bar to open the editor
Select any of the current presets to use as a template.
Edit to make your new preset.
Click on New and give it a name
Click on Save (if you want your gradient to load next time you open Photoshop)
Your new gradient will now be available from the drop down in the Gradient Map command.

How to use custom sound effects

One of the few good things one could do in Windows was to assign any sound effect you wanted to use to just about any operating system or other event. For example, you could have Captain Pecard say "Minimize" whenever you minimized a window.
OS X (10.7 Lion in my case) doesn't make this as easy. If you want to add your own sound effects to the pre-installed sound effects you get when you open System Preferences → Sound → Sound Effects, you must manually add them to the correct folder after first converting them into .aiff format.
I've done all this successfully, but I don't know the last step, namely, how to assign the new sound to a 'Custom' event. I see my new sound files in the right place (System Preferences → Sound → Sound Effects), but it just says 'Custom' for the alert sount type.
Help would be appreciated.

So? Just select the name. BTW, all that does is select which one you want to use for ALERTs, nothing else. For anything else, such as those contained in
/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/f inder/ you need to rename the new sound as the original and put them into that same location.

Custom gradient stroke

I was trying to get a gradient stroke to a text using the Photoshop Live Effects but it seems I can only set the gradient to be black/white
I would like to know how can I chage that
Below is what I did so far
Now I would like the cradient colors to be for example red and blue or to add 3 or more color to it!

A gradient you can't change isn't very useful, is it. Odd.
Well, I managed something much more complicated, but it will allow you to create a color gradient even if you want bold text.
It's a Fireworks .png, so you can copy it and open it up. Layer 2 is the visible result; Layer 1 has copies of the components so you can see them individually.
Start with three copies of the word "Text." The green one does not have the Photoshop Live Effects gradient stroke. For the other two, one has white text and one has black text. Make sure to copy and then not move any of the text elements. Turn off their visibility for working, because you need them to stay aligned.
For the one with black text, the gradient stroke is white on top. If we use this for a mask, we can create the gradient fade where the object is white, going to transparent where the object is black. I layered this over a blue rectangle then used the text object as a mask. (Select black text object with stroke and blue rectangle, then menu Modify > Mask > Group as Mask.) This gives me a fading blue outline at the top of the text.
To make a mask for the lower part of the gradient, we need that to be white, but it's black. Take the text object with the white text and invert it with menu Filters > Adjust Color > Invert. This will create a bitmap from the vector object, but it will work just fine. I took this bitmap and used it as a mask for a red rectangle. This gives me a fading red outline at the bottom of the text.
Pretty complex, but it gets the effect on bold text as well as any other shape you might apply the filter to.
Hmm. A fading blue outline over a straight red outline would probably work too! Just thought of that.
