Custom Icon Issue

I have changed icons before, when the new itunes came out a while back and I went and made my own Totoro-themed icon to replace the black on blue one. Anyways, I'm trying to change icons for some other files and it doesn't seem to work. When I paste the file into Get Info, the icon changes into the standard "blue sky and cloud" icon rather than anything I'm trying to replace it with. I have tried unlocking the file first, then changing, but the same result occurs? Is it a filetype of file size issue, what am I doing wrong this time around that I didn't do before?

No one has an answer to this?

  • Disk First Aid - Problem: Custom icon missing

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can help me - my mac kept quitting out of printing photos to my Epson R300 and then froze. I didn't let it self repair once restarted but left it to do it today manually. I set Disk First Aid going and it came up with about 30 "Custom icon missing" alerts and when I asked it to repair it couldn't repair them.
Anyone know what's happened there and how to fix it?
I've noticed that the mac has been quitting out of programmes a lot lately but without the 'this spllication has unexpectedly quit' alert. I haven't added any new software or hardware lately either.
    Many thanks!

    Vicky,
    Welcome to Discussions.
Fortunately, the Custom Icon issue will have no impact on the general reliability of your mac.
As a bit of background, one of the special attributes that can be applied to a file or folder (like modification date, or label, or comments, or the FileType and Creator - so a document knows which app it is associated with when you double click it) is this "Custom Icon" setting.
So you have 30 files / folders that have been marked as having a custom icon. But when it goes to get the custom icon to display the file / folder in the Finder, it can't find it. You usually just end up with a generic icon for the file / folder. It offers no extra functionality other than displaying a pretty icon in the Finder. Similarly, when it doesn't work, you lose no functionality, other than that.
The applications quiting unexpectedly could be an issue, but issues with printing colour photos to a printer may be memory issues. Colour photos, perhaps .jpg, are compressed. As your printer doesn't have built-in decompression software, the pictures must be decompressed on the Mac before sending to the printer. And there is the issue, if this requires too much memory, your mac can do strange things.
Is printing from OSX any better ? I would have thought a G4 iMac with Panther would be a dream to work on.

  • Customizing icons in sys folder extension folder IO...kext pkg issues

I currently run a mbp 17" early 2011. For years of OS iterations including Lion 10.7.3 I've customized my icons throughout the system folder, including the extensions folder. Till now. I don't know if the issue is recent firmware /smc update related. I do know that my system does not like the customizations to icons as basic as "CD-R.icns" and all the rest of the IO function sets in the kext packages. I lose all functionality of Superdrive, Firewire, USB, etc.. Changing the internal HD icon creates a loss of Finder. Ouch! I had to use a TimeMachine backup off a jump drive to restore/fix it. The names of the .icns swaps are exact. Odd... What's up? Thanks in advance, William

Just about everything these days is codesigned; modifying a codesigned component it in any way will make it inoperative (changing the icon adds a custom icon file).  You should not be messing with anything in the /System folder.

  • How to assign file extension and custom icon to executable?

    Hi all,
I was reading an old thread about this issue:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&thread.id=116925
I need to try to do this.  My application uses a custom file extension (i.e. .abc).  Upon installation I would like to:
    1.  Assign My App and custom icon to the file class (extension .abc).
This could be done by manipluting the registry (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776856(VS.85).aspx)?  This could be a problem with Vista s unless registry operations occur during installation any changes are placed in a VirtualStore, correct?
    2.  Enable the double-clicking of .abc file type to pass the data in the file to my VI (exe).
According to the File Handling Guidelines of Jean-Pierre Drolet (http://www.openg.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=File+Handling+Guidelines) the best way to do this may be using LabVIEW as an ActiveX server.
I know that when I build an executable (or installer?) there is the option to enable LabVIEW to act as an ActiveX server.  This much I know I need to do.
I thought I would open this discussion again as others may be interested and there doesn't appear to be a completely clear solution available.  Please do contribute where you can.
    Cheers,
    Battler.

My application consists of Event Structure.
How to register for ommand line event so that when a user double-clicks on a .abc file I can handle the opening of it?
This needs to work (the files need to open) not only when the application is closed but also when it's already open.
    Anyone have ideas?
The solution to that is to implement a DDE server in your application (and add DDE entries to the registry on installation). There are still DDE functions in LabVIEW vi.lib\Platform\dde.llb but they are considered depreciated and have been removed from the palette, also because Microsoft is trying to tell everyone that DDE is depreciated and sort of unsupported too. But it is still the mechanisme to pass actions from the shell to running applications.
I hesitate to send you over to lavag.org where there have been some discussions about this years ago. If you go there you would do good to employ a friendly attitude. That board is run all by enthusiasts and idealists and they are all great folks but react not very friendly to people with an attitude.

  • Mystery of the Disappearing Custom Icons

    iMac 2.66; 10.6.4
I create simple custom icon labels for the docs & folders in my dock. I type a filename in TextEdit, take a screenshot of it, open the screenshot in GraphicConverter, and copy & paste it into the getinfo window of the doc or folder. Then I drag it to the dock. Now and then, with no pattern or seeming cause, the custom icons on one or more disappear. Some never disappear. Sometimes it'll be weeks with no problem, sometimes hours. I repair permissions twice a week without fail. I have no other issues going on. Anyone know why this is happening? I've searched the fora but can't find similar problems.

  • Trouble with some documents: no custom icon, only generic appears

I tried anything: rebuilt launch servcice, permission repair, daily, weekly, monthly scripts (using maintanace, onyx, etc...) BUT all the documents associated with Openoffice have no custom icon. I also tried reinstalling oo with no success. It happens with textedit and keynote (using "get info", open with, apply to all) and don't know why?
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks!

You could create a new admin user and move the data within each of these folders to the corresponding folder on the new account: Desktop, Documents. Library, Movies, Music, etc. You can di it most easily IMO, by copying your Home folder to DVD first. Alternatively, you could use Users/Shared for the data.
But it would really be best to sort this issue in your present user.
It would be a good idea to test with a new user though to see if the problem exists there.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your OO & TE work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Custom icon lost from dock when clicked.

    Hello.
I'm currently running OS 10.6.1 on 15" MBP w/ 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. I experienced this same issue in Leopard, but was hoping Snow Leopard would fix it. I thought it did, but it just happened again.
I keep several documents in the dock that I use very frequently (three MS Excel workbooks, 1 FM Pro database). For some reason, when I click on any of the Excel docs, the custom icon I have assigned to it is lost. Even when I reveal in Finder, the icon has just been removed, and the standard Excel icon shows.
The funny thing is that the custom icons, when replaced, seem to last for several clicks, then for some reason, they just go away when the doc is clicked.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Any help would be awesome.

    Hi eye sean,
The program icons on your Dock (App Store, System Preferences) are alias links (shortcuts) and not the programs themselves. You can't delete them by removing them from the Dock. Now, if somehow they were accidentally removed from the /Applications folder then that's a bigger issue. I take it neither of the programs or in that folder?
If that's the case there's two things I'm aware of worth trying:
Run a repair Disk Permissions from the installation disc that came with your computer
Reinstall the Operating System via the installation disc
If System Preferences (the application) is completely gone, then it's option #2. If it's corrupted the disk permissions may resolved it. I'd say you could make a new user to see if a preference pane that's specific to your current user is causing problems, but without System Preferences access that's not really a valid option.

  • Custom icon reverts to standard Pages document icon...

I'm having trouble with permanently assigning custom icons to Pages '08 documents.
Say I've got a document, I'll create an icon, set the icon via the info panel, everything is fine. The next time I click on the document with the new icon, the document opens and the custom icon disappears, reverting to the stock Pages icon.
This doesn't seem to be a problem with any other documents or folders from other programs, just Pages '08.
But I'm thinking this is more likely an OS issue than a Pages issue.
    Thanks

For some reason, the custom icon is deleted. (Bet that comes as a shock.) I have an old version but it is apparently no different. Essentially a Pages document is a folder that Finder treats like a single file:
    ls -a test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict index.xml.gz
    ../ Contents/ thumbs/
When you add a custom icon, a file is added to the folder:
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict Icon? thumbs/
    ../ Contents/ index.xml.gz
When Pages backs up the document it includes the custom icon in the document:
    ls -a Backup\ of\ test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict Icon? thumbs/
    ../ Contents/ index.xml.gz
But it disappears from the original:
    ls -a test.pages/
    ./ .typeAttributes.dict index.xml.gz
    ../ Contents/ thumbs/
(So next time, it disappears from the backup, too.)
It almost looks as though Pages renames the original document to create the backup and then creates a new "original" but this isn't correct because the filenode numbers stay the same on the original. So I don't know what causes it but it seems to be something peculiar to Pages so I'm not sure how it could be avoided except by not using Pages or not giving Pages documents custom icons.

  • Custom icon for module_webappsresultsmap

    As the title says...
When you make a search on the Google map, the icon that shows where the place  is, is a standard Google Map icon.
Is it possible to override and add a custom icon for this?
It would be nice to have it within the tag...
    ie. {module_webappsresultsmap,GoogleKey,width,height,ResultsPage,SortType,Image}
Or have the image within the web app so that each location has a different icon.

I tried submitting this same problem as a feature request and/or bug report.
Unfortunately, and somewhat disconcertingly, the Captivate Bug Report form also doesn't work. No matter how thoroughly I entered my request, I got these error messages:

  • Custom Icon Not Appear in iTune

I am ready to submit my apps but I am stuck because of one simple problem that I cannot solve.
When I go through Project > Export Release, the custom icon does not show up in iTune, but they are shown in my iPhone, iPod and iPad
The default icon appears in the iTune but not the one I designed.
I have already included the all the different size icons to your build (29, 48, 57, 72, 114, 128 and 512) and see if that solves your problem but this did not solve the problem.
    Please help me!
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
I have tried setting 512x512 image in the app.xml and i was able to get the icon image in iTunes.
If you are using the same icon file in AIR and embedding it to set it dynamically at runtime then you might have an issue. In this case, please create a copy of same image and use it in app.xml file.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Custom icon leaf tree

    Hi developers,
I have one how to do question: In a tree I like to introduce a custom icon on each leaf.
For this, I tried to introduce at the icon column sql #WORKSPACE_IMAGES#picture.gif but nothing happened, instead if I use #IMAGE_PREFIX#standard_picture.gif it works, but I want to use my custom pictures uploaded in Shared Components->Images.
Is there any way to do this? Thank you in advance.

    Hi "user11978562",
In APEX 4.0, bug 9893260 was logged against the handling of #WORKSPACE_IMAGES# and #APP_IMAGES# in the setting of custom icons on a tree. However, the fix for this issue was incorporated in the 4.0.1 patch release. It was also discussed on this related thread: Re: Syntax for icon in Tree element If you are running 4.0, then my recommendation would be to upgrade to our latest patch release, 4.0.2. If you are running on 4.0.1 or higher, then this may be a silly question, but is there a chance that the images you've uploaded are associated with a particular application? Maybe it's worth trying #APP_IMAGES# instead of #WORKSPACE_IMAGES#.

    Hilary

  • Custom Icon for application file

I can make director allow me to have a custom icon for appliacation file.
In director I have attempted this several times where I have tried to have my appliaction file have an icon.  I have purchased two icon program Candy Bar and Fastincs trying to remedy this problem.
As you see here I am using an ins file created in Fastincs.  Now here is an image to the path and the icon itself Applipcations/ Adobe Director 11/3 HorseLogo.mac.ins
So there is the setup now when I complile for my program file I get this.
See the grey Director icon I don't want that I want the three horse logo.
I also tried to assign the logo after publishing the file.
then I drag my icon file in
The program created in director still wont see the icon file.
If I use Candy bar (icon application)  I get a  different result. The icon works
in both finder and on the task bar
This is exactly what I want.
I works until I try to move the entire package into an installer program  I am using BitRock.  When I compile the installation program then try to run the application I get the following message
If I choose ignore the install continues.  But I have no icon.
I am desperate , weeping , screaming , and almost a lost cause, any help any help at all I could really use.
    Thanks
    Robin aka innish

    Hi Robin,
I'm more of a PC person rather than Mac. I would recommend you look at the Resource and Icon Editor page at:
    http://collab.directorforum.com/Resource_and_Icon_Editor
It may fix your icon issue from Director.

  • Custom Icon for Windows.exe from a Mac

It doesn't seem possible to insert a custom icon for a Windows executable when working on Captivate on a Mac, is that right? The documentation (below) seems to gloss over this shortcoming.
    Custom Icon
You can customize the icon that is displayed for the executable file. Click Browse (...) to add a custom icon for your file. Ensure that the icon file has a .ico extension (on Windows)/.icns (for Mac).

  • Custom Icons Disappear in Cover Flow Above Certain Size

I've been trying to create custom icons for certain folders and I've been having no luck when viewing them in cover flow.
I've downloaded a PNG file, 512x512 pixels. Open it in Preview, copy to the clipboard, do a 'get info' on the folder I wish to change the icon of, click the little icon, hit paste, and it appears correctly in the preview and in the finder Icons view, as well as on my desktop or whatever. However, if I turn on cover flow and drag the size of cover flow to larger than a certain point, the custom image disappears and all I get is a blank spot. It's as if the 256 pixel icon is being created but the 512 pixel image is being left blank.
I do not know if this happened in 10.5.1, as I hadn't tried until after installing the 10.5.2 combo update.
In the following picture, you can see 1: bottom right, a preview of the png file itself as it appears, correctly, in cover flow, 2: top right, the icon working correctly on the desktop and in the get info window, and 3: left: the cover flow view of the computer showing a bit gaping void where the custom icon should reside.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

This does NOT happen if I use an existing, working icon (say, put the Applications folder's icon onto my hard drive.) It seems to be an issue with custom icons only, not just changing the icon for something.
