Custom Kernel and VMware

If I build a specific kernel for my machine and use VMware in that machine. Did I need to take account of the driver need by VMware? I suppose the answer is yes! But I want to be sure. I'm building the custom kernel-headers right now and didn't have the time to test it yet! I was having a strange message when I was trying to use makepkg to build the kernel and headers. Took me some time to figure out I also need to change the name of the headers else where in the PKGBUILD.

You can find UVC from Device drivers -> Multimedia support -> Video capture adapters -> V4L USB Devices.

  • [Solved]Custom Kernel and OSS issues

I built a custom kernel from Zen's git (because no speedstep-centrino in the ARCH kernel) and only built OSS in the sound section, first built into the kernel and then as modules.
    Unforunatly, this happens:
    ArchTC1100% sudo soundon
Failed to disable conflicting sound drivers
Reboot and try running soundon again
Also check that you have not compiled sound support statically
    into the kernel.
    (yes I rebooted)
    lsmod shows this...rather short list:
    Module Size Used by
    nvidia 4655919 22
    ttm 46526 0
    drm_kms_helper 23684 0
    video 9412 0
    iTCO_wdt 9033 0
    btusb 9145 0
    irtty_sir 3149 0
    sir_dev 8233 1 irtty_sir
The main kernel work but, has an issue where I have to manually use soundon or I get nothing.
Here's the config I made...I'm guessing I messed up something.

Ah, that worked.  It's my first time using OSS and have always compiled that in.
A bit off the topic, anyone know why the oss-hg package in the aur causes a kernel panic when shutting down?  It appears to be an issue with the soundoff command.  The offical arch package doesn't do this.  Though the sound seems...grainy...compared to oss-hg.

  • Optimizing system for best performance/stability and a custom kernel

I have ArchLinux running on a MacBook 4.1 (early 2008), and it's running very well so far. But I would like to optimize it for best performance and stability (but not at the cost of losing 'graphical interface' quality). I want to compile a custom kernel, and I actually did once, but didn't do it well (and removed it), so I need some help from experts to tell me what should I disable or enable when compiling a custom kernel.
I will post dmesg and lspci (and rc.conf) here, but if you need any other information, please tell me.
    Thanks.

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
(this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
(use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • Cant find virtualbox vboxdrv (install vbox modules on custom kernel)

    hi guys!
i recently installed virtualbox-ose using pacman -Sy virtualbox. it installed fine and i was able to create a vm. when i start my vm i get this error:
VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root.

i could not find /etc/init.d/vboxdrv. when i do for a search for vboxdrv, it shows me a vobxdrv.ko and its located on my original arch kernel 2.6.25-ARCH. im using a custom kernel. how do i tell virtualbox to build the modules in my custom kernel and not on the arch kernel. i remember i had the same problem with ndiswrapper before that ndis wrapper built the ndiswrapper module on my arch kernel instead of my custom kernel. any ideas?
    thanks!

I found out how to fix by editing the script  vbox_build_modules this is what mty script looks like if anyone wants it
    #!/bin/bash
echo "Building vboxdrv for `uname -sr`"
    cd "/opt/virtualbox/src"
    export KERN_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.6.29.3-IX
make clean && make && make install

  • GRUB corrupted after custom kernel build

    Hi
I have developed my ARCH installation for development purpose.
I am new to linux kernel development.
I compiled the kernel and placed the kernel image in the /boot folder and modified grub.cfg to point at it.
After that I selected my arch installation and it didnt succesfully boot the manually compiled kernel.
Then I rebooted and selected the arch-fallback and it booted succesfully.
After that the book I am referring to suggested to use the 'make modules_install' to load modules and then I rebooted.
After that grub is giving me a "minimum bash like interface"
How can I boot the machine from this interface. (if i can)?
Also i tried to reinstall grub (from an ubuntu live disk) but it said it couldnt' find /boot/grub
Re-installing grub from an Arch live disk was succesful but it didn't fix the problem
    Please Help
    Thanks in advance!

I think you are missing a driver that you need to boot.  Is your kernel still using the initrd, or did you build in all of the modules you need in order to boot?
If you are depending on the initrd to provide modules during boot, then the modules burned into that initrd need to be compatible with your custom kernel -and- (I think) the kernel has to have the same name as the stock kernel.
When I build a custom kernel, I usually do away with the initrd and build the required modules to boot into the kernel.  I only modularize those that I do not need everytime I boot; for example USB based device drivers.
To boot, you need your disk controller, the file systems drivers of the volumes to be mounted at boot, video hardware drivers, keyboard drivers, maybe some real time clock drivers, PCI Drivers, Maybe ISA and LPC bus drivers.
Take a look at this site.  The guy who runs it is legendary on the Gentoo forums, his site might provide some insight into how to configure your kernel.
tl;dr:  The problem is not Grub.
Edit: You may also want to look at the Gentoo Handbook.  Being Gentoo, they have some pretty good information on how to configure a kernel.

  • NEED SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR CUSTOM KERNELS

I had a sony ericsson live with walkman earlier and I've flashed custom kernel and rom for it.. and it is working superbly so far.. Currently I've got an Xperia ray and I wish to do the same ... Before I get started let me know the best custom kernels out there for this device???
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I guess you should search for XDA
As far as i know kernels from team free xperia(Free xperia Project) are the best
    DooMkernel etc etc

I tried to install the driver with yaourt and it installs the .ko . in my extramodules folder in my /lib/modules/ directory. but modprobe wl report no such file.
But if i come back to the precompiled kernel it works. I ve tried to change the kernel version to my current version in extramodules in /lib/modules/extramodules-3.10 that the PKGBUILD is looking at and try to install it again with yaourt on my custom kernel but still the same.
I copied the .ko to my kernel 3.10.10 custom and tried modprob and I got a symlink error.
As they said i need to modprob the  cfg80211, which i did but I still get the same error.
Howto build package for my custom kernel and not the default kernel while I am on the custom kernel ??

oh, thx, i didn't know, that kernel26 is in addedpacks. now, i am building it with  #kernel26

  • Setting up a custom kernel

I just came here from gentoo and sortof felt like i want to have a custom kernel because i'm not a fan of default settings.... else why wouldn't i just be using something easy and noob-proof like fedora or mint?...
I found gentoo was a bit too troublesome for a beginner like me, mostly because i felt it wasn't stable enough because i wasn't familiar with linux enough to make it that way, and jumped to arch since it's more stable by default without me needing to input very much (in comparison) and most importantly, it doesn't take a week to install a program, i might jump back to gentoo on some of my computers once i know exactly what programs i want to have running on them beforehand. all the things i'll need, but since i'm new and will be installing and uninstalling a lot of things i think its better for me to use arch.
So, like i said i was trying to set up a custom kernel, i was reading this
But stopped at the part where it says
    Changing build()
You probably need a custom .config file for your kernel. You can uncomment one of the possibilities shown in the build() function of the PKGBUILD, e.g.:
    PKGBUILD
      # load configuration
      # Configure the kernel. Replace the line below with one of your choice.
#make menuconfig # CLI menu for configuration
make nconfig # new CLI menu for configuration
      #make xconfig # X-based configuration
#make oldconfig # using old config from previous kernel version
      # ... or manually edit .config
Now i very much need that "make nconfig" or "make menuconfig" command working so i can customize the settings in the kernel. I thought about being lazy and just using genkernel from gentoo but... i'm not in gentoo anymore so i figured i should do things the way they're meant to be done instead. otherwise how would i learn right?
This step confused me completely since it's not pointing me to any file and as far as i know there is no such file as "PKGBUILD" for configuration
So if anyone would be nice enough to point me in the right direction or just explaining real quick what i need t odo to enable that nconfig command i'd b e very grateful!
    Thanks

Thanks a lot for your replies guys
I see now that the PKGBUILD file was in fact in the $HOME/abs/core/linux directory, but i somehow managed to miss it... strange, but i guess i'm only human (and haven't used linux too much, less than a year)
I think i could live with rebuilding the kernel from scratch everytime i update since if things are working i probably wont be updating too often anyways. once you configure a menu many times enough it etches itself into your memory so after a few times i could do it in no time. So i think i will start off by using the "Arch way" for now. But i'll take note of everything ewaller said aswell and keep in mind i could get used to using the kernel from kernel.org instead.
Thanks for pointing out BFS, i didn't know about that. I'll have to look into that, it looks promising!
Now the way i understand it is that i edit the pkgbuild file, run makepkg -i and i will get the nconfig up during the makepkg process right? or i could use the return 1 option and take my time/days "coffeeing" over the config file then once its prepared copy it over to the build directory (or whatever its called) comment the return 1 option and makepkg again to finish it with these settings right? would it be bad to use this same config file for the next kernel version?
But i'm also faced with one more issue you might say jumping from gentoo to arch, that being that gentoo still uses the old GRUB boot loader whereas arch dives me into GRUB2
I liked the old grub because it really provided me with everything i wanted and needed and made it very easy for me to modify it the only drawback i could find (for myself) was that if i wanted to use a background image it could not be more than 14 colors, but that was ok, since i'm not a complete novice in the use of image editing applications.
now my point is that grub2 is not as user friendly when it comes to configuration, at least not from the very start. the code in the config file looks complicated as hell at first glance (even if i'm pretty sure its simple when i'm used to it) and so far i've learned that i can use the command "# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"
to edit the grub config file which (since i installed os-prober) should apply the configuration changes i've made in the "/etc/default/grub" and scan for any other operating systems i might have installed.
Now it gets a bit more complicated when i'll be dual booting and possibly even triple booting with this grub2. so far so good but the question is, will it pick up any custom kernels i've made and placed on the /boot partition properly through os-prober without me needing to do anything in particular?
I need to be able to change the order in which grub displays the operating systems (custom linux kernel first, then stable arch, then windows7, then fallback kernels at the bottom for example)
I need to be able to manually rename the display name for the operating systems within grub2
The cfg file is a little bit complicated to look at like i said.
Before i mess with this then... the way i understand it i can edit the display name from "menuentry 'Edit name here' .... "
Then i can change the load order by moving "menuentry 'String' --class.... { ... }" around. with ctrl+k and ctrl+u in nano.
and then ideally since i don't know too much about how it's working, not mess with anything else. or is it more complicated than that?
would i need to copy say...
    ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
    menuentry 'Windows' ... { ... }
    ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
    would that work?
Could i copy/paste the menuentry for the stable or fallback archlinux and change the lines "linux /vmlinuz-linux...." and "initrd /initramfs-linux.img" into my custom kernel and initramfs image for it, would that work?
is it safe to make "root=/dev/sda6" instead of "root=UUID=....." to simplify custom configuration for me if i would so desire?
Finally aswell, it says in the code "insmod gzio" "insmod part_msdos" "insmod ext2"
I use ext4 on my root drive (ext2 on boot) and my custom kernel probably wont be using gzip, is it encouraged for me to change these lines?
Or is there a much simpler way to do this or understand this?

  • [solved] Nvidia with custom kernel

    Hello,
I just compiled a new custom kernel and the custom kernel headers and then went on to create a custom nvidia kernel module. Somehow that doesn't seem to work. Nvidia is complaining that there is something Xen-ish in my kernel:
    Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36-no-compat32
    Verifying archive integrity... OK
Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86_64 260.19.36.....................................................................................................................
The kernel you are installing for is a Xen kernel!
The NVIDIA driver does not currently work on Xen kernels. If
you are using a stock distribution kernel, please install
a variant of this kernel without Xen support; if this is a
custom kernel, please install a standard Linux kernel. Then
try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.
*** Failed Xen sanity check. Bailing out! ***
    make[1]: *** [build-sanity-checks] Error 1
    make: *** [module] Error 2
    Aborting...
As far as I know there is no xen or other vm stuff in the kernel. To verify this I tried to make a new nvidia package for the standard kernel. Again the same error.
Also this makes me wonder how the PKGBUILD works since it the build function just runs:
    make SYSSRC=/path/to/current/kernelmodules/build module
and there are no xen sanity checks in that script, that happens in nvidia-installer - which isn't called from the PKGBUILD....
Secondly, when doing a "make module" from the nvidia/kernel dir with the standard kernel there is a difference between the abs package and the extra package. Anyone a clue what is going on in the PKGBUILD and why the difference between the two kernel modules?
    Thanks.

    Different cflags? Different compiler version?
Ulf wrote:and why nvidia thinks there is a kernel with Xen (it seems that it is some sort of common bug, not specific to arch but nvidia-ish).
Quite likely false detection. The installer sees something activated in the kernel and thinks it's xen related. Or something.

  • Problem with HD6630M and catalyst on custom kernel

My laptop is a sony vaio sa with hd6630m and intel graphics as a hybrid graphics setup. i m using linux-sony from aur.
This is what i ve done so far:
i have followed the instructions in the catalyst wiki in order to install catalyst for custom kernel, with catalyst-hook
but after installing, aticonfig --initial -f throws no supported adapters detected. i m sure that my adapter is supported by the latest driver as some guys have successully made the setup.
i' ve read every thread i could find in google about my issue but i didn't make a progress although other have made it!
    Things i tried:
    - installing the .run package from ati manually
    - reinstalling xorg and make a xorg.conf by my own (Xorg -configure does not work either)
    - installing catalyst in default latest kernel
    - i have not tried any other distro lately to see if i could make it work.
    - the open drivers also do not work with my setup, i can only have intel card and blacklisting radeon. (vgaswitcheroo does not work either)
    - many others i cannot recall
The two cards show up in lspci so it isnt a hardware problem
has anyone idea whats might going on or what i m doing wrong?

    Hello All
I find out the solution myself !!!! Phew!!
In order to create a french page couple of things need to be done
1)In the configuration manager > display tab > chnage the language the to french
    2) Log in to Application designer and create the same component and page that was created in English. You may not have to create the page from scratch since you would first create it in base language english and hence when you log in as french you will have the page but it will be distorted so it will be rearranged.
    3) Any text that is there on the page will have to be rewritten in french if its is static text or else if it is being called from a message catalog it needs to be first written in English(this writes to PSMSGCATDEFN). Now go to PeopleTools>Translation>Translate System Definitions>Messages.
And create the french transaltion. For more details on hopw to create new language specific message read peoplebooks(type Translating Messages in the search of peoplebooks).
The language sepecific messages are written to PSMSGCATLANG table.
Now when you log in to peoplesoft as french you will see all you custom pages in french.
Have fun creating any global pages

  • Fglrx and custom kernel 2.6.16

I know that there are a lot of post about this issue in the forum, but i couldn't find a solution, and believe me, I`ve spent about 4 hours looking through the forum and google (maybe im a little dumb) with no results!
The problem is that i can't compile the ATI driver under the kernel version 2.6.16, i tried with the patched version from the pacman repositories (actually it compiles, but hungs my system badly) and with the official ATI release...
Also under the 2.6.15 kernel the ati-fglrx pacman package didn't worked neither the one from ATI, i get unresolved symbols, but i managed to make it work by mergeing some files from both packages!
So, was anyone able to make the FGLRX driver (8.23.7) work under the latest kernel??
PD: Now i`m going to try with the new 8.24.8 arch linux release! And sorry for my bad english! XD

    hi there
i also had some probs with installing those drivers (8.23.7) with a custom kernel (custom beyond). This thread fixed my probs
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=
The essential part of this was to compile my kernel from source and to then do the 'symlink trick' as described in the post. Hope it helps

  • Custom kernel 2.6.25 and nvidia

I have compiled a custom kernel the 'traditional' way, that is, make and make modules_install and now I am having trouble getting the nvidia driver to work
I usually just install it through pacman, but that doesn't work with the custom kernel.
So my next step was to follow the wiki.
I changed the kernel names in the PKGBUILD and nvidia.install that i got from my abs tree, and when I install with makepkg -i -c everything goes well.
However, when I try to start X again, it crashes and says it cannot find the NVIDIA kernel module. I don't fully understand everything in the PKGBUILD and it is quite possible there is some other line or path that needs to be changed. Please, I am at my wit's end.

I don't use Arch package for nvidia as script is unable to install modules on several kernels at the same time and I want to boot to X irrelevant of kernel loaded. I never had any problems with custom kernels 2.6.25 and nvidia 169 or 173
    current status:
    $ find /lib/modules/ -name nvidia.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.25-zen0-GIGUE/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.25-zen1-preview3-FADO/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.25-zen1-SARABANDE/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.25-zen1-GAVOTTE/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
all boots fine, none crash/freeze. Never patched 169 or 173
Well, it looks like the 169 installer would always put nvidia.ko in the /lib/modules/2.6.24 directory, no matter if i was currentlyusing a different kernel or not so im not sure what is going on there.
must be some quirk on your box. Have not seen this.

  • How to create a custom kernel with initrd and ARCH patches

    Hi,
I like the default kernel because everything seems to work well and I think the Arch kernel includes patches I need (such as the mactel patch). But some options that i would like to be enabled are not. in fact i would like to use powertop but i can't because it needs the CONFIG_TIMER_STATS option.
What I would like is a kernel based on the arch kernel but with a different config file. Nothing more.
if i look at the solution on the Wiki, I see that I have to add all patches the standard kernel have ... Moreover there is no initrd creation. i think i will need it if I use the Arch kernel configuration.
And if i use the kernel26 PKGBUILD, I must change the package name in order to keep my current kernel. It's easy to do in the PKGBUILD but much more complicated to do it in the kernel26.install file beacuse I have to change the filenames in /boot and I do not want to replace the kernel26 files.
So do you have any ideas how to compile my custom kernel ? Is there a better solution ?
    Thanks.
    Mildred.

Why do you think you would have to change the files again when kernel26 is updated?
don't the patches change from version to version?
anyways, i was bored so i wrote a little script... edit the configuration variables at the top and it'll do the work for you. just put it in /var/abs/kernels or wherever you have the kernel26/ at, chmod +x scriptname, and run.
if you're in /var/abs/kernels you'll probably have to run as root.
from my testing, it seems to be all working (looking at resulting files and no errors so far from makepkg); but i'm still building my test kernel with it.
