Custom kernel config and fsck error

Why does arch kernel config pass while custom kernel config fail the fsck during boot? Udev obviously populates /dev/sda* with the archlinux kernel config while the custom kernel config populates /dev/hda*. Is there a reason for this behavior related to the config file or is it a initscript based on /etc/fstab related issue? I have the two different kernel configuration files for the i686 machines, just in case someone can figure this out.
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/longe … ig-longene
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/longe … -archlinux

Check to make sure that it is not because of the system time being changed.  It will complain about this if it has changed and fail the first filesystem check.

  • Kernel panic and RAM errors

    Hi there,
I have a problem with my MacBook which I bought in April 2007. I upgraded my memory and now have 3GB, the maximum capacity my MacBook 2,1 can deal with. In last week, my computer froze entirely...but the mouse pointer was still moveable what struck me a little. Now, this morning, I had a kernel panic. I'll post the log at the end of this message. I tested my memory because of that with a linux dvd: memtest86. I have up to now 510 errors. I've already changed the memory modules and tested them separately - always errors. Now I wonder if both modules are defective or perhaps something else like perhaps the logic board or the memory controller. The really strange thing is that if I test the memory within OSX, there are no errors found.

I might have found a solution: memtest86 found on linux dvds/cds doesn't seem to be suitable for Intel Macs. There is a port for Intel Macs: http://matt.ucc.asn.au/memtest/
This program blocks the first 1.2MB, where information concerning Boot Camp are located, which cause errors in the normal memtest86. More information in the link given above.
That's why I received those much error messages. That's also why a memory test within OSX didn't show errors. The test is now running for 14mins and no error has occurred yet.
But can anyone read any information from the panic log?

  • Getting and fsck error on startup about /bin/plymouth

    Hello,
Yesterday I was rebooting my laptop when this happened, during the booting up there was an usual filesystem check and the it gave me an error and asked me to enter my root password for maintenance or press ctrl+D to continue I just continued to the DM and did run
    journalctl -xb
I run openbox with compton and conky and basic apps I do not have KDE installed although I did try installing kde5 but  was unable to install completely due to some depenecides not installing.
    this is the output:

I'm not a hardware person, but I doubt it can be repaired.
You might put it in a USB enclosure and try to access the data from another computer. Some have had luck with this treatment.

  • Kernel Panics and other errors

Ok here's the deal. I was having a lot of problems with my MacBook Pro and reinstalling Leopard did nothing to help, so I took it to the Apple store near me and checked it in. A couple of weeks later I got it back with a new logic board, new hard drive, and new hard drive cable. Since then I've been having kernel panics every now and then. The only time it happens regularly is when I try to do a directory repair with DiskWarrior on my external Firewire drive running 10.5.3.
The FW drive's panic log refers to a simple lock deadlock detection caused by com.alsoft.Preview. A Safe Boot fixes the issue, which would point to a conflicting kext or login item or something like that. What I can't figure out is why it worked perfectly before my laptop was repaired, and now consistently causes a kernel panic whenever I run it. Nothing on the external drive has changed since then, so I'd have to assume the hardware change would be the problem. But then why would a Safe Boot solve the problem? Maybe a driver or something that isn't being loaded in Safe Mode but normally is encountering an error due to bad hardware?
I also have two other panic logs from my internal hard drive. The first is a kernel trap, also caused by com.alsoft.Preview. I'm not sure why it was stored on the internal hard drive's Logs folder since I only run DiskWarrior from my FW drive (it's not even installed on the internal drive), but I digress. The other panic was caused by an "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand" error. Apparently the error had to do with a few USB-related drivers and IOKits, namely IOUSBMassStorageClass, AppleUSBEHCI, and IOUSBFamily. I've been having some weird issues with my USB flash drive lately, mostly file transfers going incredibly slow (like 300 KB/sec slow). I haven't been having these issues on any other computer, and I've even verified the flash drive with Disk Utility, so I would have to say the problem is with the Mac and not the drive itself.
Now for the other errors. I've been getting Disk Too Slow errors in GarageBand when recording guitar tracks (which I've never gotten before), and there's a lot of background noise when recording that wasn't there before the repair. Before I could connect the audio output on the amp to the line in on my laptop using a 1/4" to 3.5 mm cable, and everything sounded pretty clean. Now the sound is distorted and there's a lot of static during silence. The only way to get it sound somewhat decent is to play around with the gate and compression settings.
I'm also having occasional issues ejecting drives and virtual drives, Spotlight tries to index drives that are added to the exception list in System Preferences, and weird random errors showing up in Console related to Finder, Dock, certain apps, and fseventd (the fseventd errors are usually about my flash drive). I'm leaning toward a bad logic board, even though that was just replaced. I just did an Erase and Install a few weeks ago so I doubt it's software-related. Plus I've been having issues with it in one form or another since I got it back, which also makes me think it's not the OS.
Anyway, I'm just looking for opinions at this point. I'm going to take it back to the Apple store in a few days because of a small group of dead pixels, so as long as I'm down there I'll ask them. In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts?

  • Changing a parameter in Kernel Config and applying

    Hi,
due to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168801 issue, I wanted to follow the fix explained here : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=665493
and actually on Arch Linux :
    ]# zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI
    CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=y
    CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI_IBM=m
So basically I want to set CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI to m and apply the configuration.
What's a safe way to do that?
    thanks.

    Thanks Karol ,
while I'm going through the recompilation process , is there any chance to choose the version with ABSROOT in order to skip also the broadcom bug? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168177
And I was interested if *before* going through the hole thing I can somehow make use of :
    ls /usr/src/linux-3.0.93-1-lts/
Documentation  Kconfig    Makefile  Module.symvers  arch    block  crypto  drivers    fs  include  init  kernel  lib    mm  net  samples  scripts  security  sound  usr  virt
If I can generate the images and choose to boot from either kernel when logging in.
    Big Thanks.

  • Customized Cache Config and Coherence Override files not Overrided.

    Hi,
I am doing an example on coherence and was wondering if anyone can help with a couple of questions.
    1. I am trying to override the coherence-cache-config.xml and tangosol-coherence-override.xml with my custom xmls. But when I start cache server from cache-server.cmd executable provided in bin folder of Coherence, it is not able to pick up the overrided files. How can I override both these files.
    2. In most of the examples a new executable file is made for cache server start and the custom coherence-cache-config.xml is specified in this. The examples runs perfectly fine but I'm not able to see the same cache elements available when I run cache-server and cache-client present in the bin folder of Coherence. How can I integrate both of them.
    3. When we use Coherence as a web service from server, are we suppose to use run cache-server.cmd for starting the cache server or make some custom file executable file made for cache server start.
I know some of the questions may sound silly to you but I'm not still able to figure the answer to these question.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Varun

    Hi Varun,
Yes you can use the property -Dtangosol.coherence.cacheconfig =<file_name> for specifying the override file. No creating a jar is not a bottleneck and you can use either jar or system property in Production Environment. It completely depends on how your environment is setup and is for the flexibility pruposes? Use whichever is handy ...
Ideally, you WS application should run in a seperate JVM than your Coherence Nodes. In this scenario, your WS application is set as storage-disabled and your Coherence nodes will be set as storage-enabled and both WS and Coherence Nodes will be part of the Coherence cluster. There will be no syncing between WS application and Coherence Nodes if you are using distributed cache; all the data requests from the WS application will be served by the Coherence Nodes. But, if you are using Near Cache then the data syncing will depend on the invalidation strategy used by you in your cache configuration. Read more about near-cache scheme here: http://wiki.tangosol.com/display/COH35UG/near-scheme.
In WLS 10.3.4, there is a integration of Coherence and you can create Coherence Cluster from the Admin Console and define various Coherence cluster nodes and the documentation is here (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/web.1111/e16517/coh_wls.htm). But if you are using any other version of Weblogic or any other container then you cannot start from Weblogic but you need to start them seperately. Also, you need to make sure that the Coherence Nodes with storage-enabled are started before the storage-disabled nodes.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers,
    NJ

  • [solved] Nvidia with custom kernel

    Hello,
I just compiled a new custom kernel and the custom kernel headers and then went on to create a custom nvidia kernel module. Somehow that doesn't seem to work. Nvidia is complaining that there is something Xen-ish in my kernel:
    Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36-no-compat32
    Verifying archive integrity... OK
Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86_64 260.19.36.....................................................................................................................
The kernel you are installing for is a Xen kernel!
The NVIDIA driver does not currently work on Xen kernels. If
you are using a stock distribution kernel, please install
a variant of this kernel without Xen support; if this is a
custom kernel, please install a standard Linux kernel. Then
try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.
*** Failed Xen sanity check. Bailing out! ***
    make[1]: *** [build-sanity-checks] Error 1
    make: *** [module] Error 2
    Aborting...
As far as I know there is no xen or other vm stuff in the kernel. To verify this I tried to make a new nvidia package for the standard kernel. Again the same error.
Also this makes me wonder how the PKGBUILD works since it the build function just runs:
    make SYSSRC=/path/to/current/kernelmodules/build module
and there are no xen sanity checks in that script, that happens in nvidia-installer - which isn't called from the PKGBUILD....
Secondly, when doing a "make module" from the nvidia/kernel dir with the standard kernel there is a difference between the abs package and the extra package. Anyone a clue what is going on in the PKGBUILD and why the difference between the two kernel modules?
    Thanks.

    Different cflags? Different compiler version?
Ulf wrote:and why nvidia thinks there is a kernel with Xen (it seems that it is some sort of common bug, not specific to arch but nvidia-ish).
Quite likely false detection. The installer sees something activated in the kernel and thinks it's xen related. Or something.

  • Kernel Panic -- Graphics chip error! Restarted.

Anyone out there seen ridiculous gfx card/kernel errors with Adobe CS2? My machine runs weird every time that I use Photoshop or Illustrator. Batches don't finish, and I have even been getting kernel panics lately. I would post it to Adobe, but kernel panics and hardware errors fall into Apple's domain. Hardware/Software/OS is fine for all but CS2, including opengl/coreimage/corevideo apps. I have a quad g5 with an nvidia 6800 GT gfx card with dual cinema displays and a wacom tablet. OSX is up-to-date, as is CS2.
Here's a snippet from my rather scary system log for yesterday, when I was attempting to run a batch process in illustrator...my logs are peppered with graphics chip errors every time that I use CS2. Any options other than wait for a new gfx driver from Apple or keep re-running the hardware tests?

  • Default kernel config question: acpi video freezes my laptop

    Hi,
I have a Samsung X60 laptop that freezes when the acpi video module is loaded. The default Arch kernel config (and the derived suspend2 one) includes as built-in some of the acpi code (including the video bit). I'm interested to learn why they are included as built in, and if there is a way to selectively skip the acpi video built-in bit of code? (more selectively than acpi=off as a kernel parameter). Would it be reasonable to request a change to the default kernel config?
    cheers

bugs.archlinux.org to make sure its fixed.
the acpi video module is reasonably new and it can be compiled as a module iirc, so it shouldnt be any harm to have it compiled as such.

They should be in the PKGBUILD, its a split PKGBUILD currently I think.

  • How to create a custom kernel with initrd and ARCH patches

    Hi,
I like the default kernel because everything seems to work well and I think the Arch kernel includes patches I need (such as the mactel patch). But some options that i would like to be enabled are not. in fact i would like to use powertop but i can't because it needs the CONFIG_TIMER_STATS option.
What I would like is a kernel based on the arch kernel but with a different config file. Nothing more.
if i look at the solution on the Wiki, I see that I have to add all patches the standard kernel have ... Moreover there is no initrd creation. i think i will need it if I use the Arch kernel configuration.
And if i use the kernel26 PKGBUILD, I must change the package name in order to keep my current kernel. It's easy to do in the PKGBUILD but much more complicated to do it in the kernel26.install file beacuse I have to change the filenames in /boot and I do not want to replace the kernel26 files.
So do you have any ideas how to compile my custom kernel ? Is there a better solution ?
    Thanks.
    Mildred.

tomk wrote:It's possible I'm missing something here, but I don't understand what you're worried about. If I understand correctly, you now have a PKGBUILD and associated files for kernel26mildred (or whatever you've decided to call it). Why do you think you would have to change the files again when kernel26 is updated?
don't the patches change from version to version?
anyways, i was bored so i wrote a little script... edit the configuration variables at the top and it'll do the work for you. just put it in /var/abs/kernels or wherever you have the kernel26/ at, chmod +x scriptname, and run.
if you're in /var/abs/kernels you'll probably have to run as root.
from my testing, it seems to be all working (looking at resulting files and no errors so far from makepkg); but i'm still building my test kernel with it.

i have no idea of what it the problem, the config file it's the same i've used for all my 2.6.22 kernels, any idea?
    Thank you.

This kind of error is when you forget to add a source file to gcc comand line during compilation. I think that problem might be in one of broken Makefiles in kernel tree. Maybe some patch messed with them. Try to download fresh kernel sources.

  • Custom Kernel Build Help + Errors

    Hi,
I hope everyone is doing well. I am a newbie and I have been trying to create a custom Kernel with the following steps
    1-  sudo pacman -Syu
    2- reboot
    3- download https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … .37.tar.xz
    4- tar -xvJf linux-3.14.37.tar.xz
    5- sudo pacman -S bc
    6- make mrproper
    7- zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
    8- make menuconfig -->
                                          General setup  --->
                                                                    append to kernel release 'emraldinho'
    9- make -j4
    10- sudo make modules_install
After step 10 I get the following error:
      DEPMOD  3.14.37-emraldinho
depmod: ERROR: Module 'hci_vhci' has devname (vhci) but lacks major and minor information. Ignoring.
Any ideas what's going on here? I tried doing it over a few times, but it does not seem to help
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you. I am trying to get it done for my own learning I guess.
I was thinking if I just echoed each command one by one, would that not get it done?
I guess I have to check if any of the commands are puking out an error though

    Thank you for the responses.
I want to write a bash script that does this, is there anything specific that I have to pay attention to, or can I just echo these commands one by one?
    Thanks!
Here's what I use; note that it is for a somewhat non-standard gummiboot install and has a few other peculiarities, but hopefully you may find it vaguely useful. Obviously, you break your system, you keep the pieces.

  • Optimizing system for best performance/stability and a custom kernel

I have ArchLinux running on a MacBook 4.1 (early 2008), and it's running very well so far. But I would like to optimize it for best performance and stability (but not at the cost of losing 'graphical interface' quality). I want to compile a custom kernel, and I actually did once, but didn't do it well (and removed it), so I need some help from experts to tell me what should I disable or enable when compiling a custom kernel.
I will post dmesg and lspci (and rc.conf) here, but if you need any other information, please tell me.
    Thanks.

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).

Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...
