Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Get Reset / Altered

Hey I'm having a pretty annoying problem with Photoshop CS4 - one that I never had with Version 3 or earlier.
I usually like to unmap the shortcuts for Close Window (Cmd+W by default) and Quit Photoshop (Cmd+Q by default) because they can cause problems when you hit them on accident, or too quickly.
Like I said, this has worked fine for me in the past, but now in CS4, without any rhyme or reason, the Quit shortcut gets mapped to simply 'Q', which is REALLY bad. Reloading my custom workspace solves the problem, but I have to do this daily, which kind of defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas on how to right it?
Thanks,
Nejat

Illustrator has similar problem where remapping certain keyboard short cuts do not stick seemingly. But if you open the shortcuts dialog after relaunch then it returns. Could be related.

  • Custom keyboard shortcuts and editing multiple layers in Flash CS4

    Hi, all -
    CS3 -> CS4 transition newb here who's getting increasingly frustrated with the new motion tweens; however, for this project, I'm working in a 3D space and require using them, so I'm dealing with this bit by painful bit. I found the tip about Split Motion, but first question: how do you apply Split Motion across several layers at the same time? I have six different tweens, and in CS3, I used to be able to shift-click or click-drag across frames and apply a command to all of them (for example, hit F5 to add frames), but Split Motion is requiring me to right-click on each and every layer. This is really laborious, and I worry about future animations that might be more complex.
    Similarly, I tend to add custom keyboard shortcuts to each of my Flash versions for commands I use frequently and don't want to right-click a menu for (such as "add motion tween") - however, I can't seem to find where to create a custom shortcut for either that, or Split Motion.
    Any and all help would be appreciated as I muddle through this. Honestly, guys, I WANT to like the new version and there's so many added features, but it's hampering my workflow so bad I want to pummel it with sticks.

    Hey there,
    I definitely hear you about Split Motion. There is an enhancement request for supporting multiple layers, and adding it as a keyboard shortcut. The first one is tricky, but the second one is not. I think there was hope that splitting motions wouldn't be necessary much (especially since you have to be careful when doing so when eases are involved), which is why the eventual need for more functionality related to split motion was realized a bit late in the schedule.
    Now regarding other operations, such as you mentioned F5 to insert frames - that and other operations (inserting certain types of property keyframes, F6, and so on) work just fine.
    You can apply a shortcut to Create Motion Tween in the custom keyboard shortcut dialog.  Not all operations in the program are available though (most context menu items aren't), which is why unfortunately why we don't see Split Motion yet.
    It might be possible to avoid Split Motion though with another workflow. What are you using the feature for?  Just curious in case I can help.
    Jen.

  • Custom keyboard shortcuts

    Hi, I just installed arch and I'd really like to get this one thing working:
    how can i define custom keyboard shortcuts, say I want a script to run when I press <ctrl><alt>T  ?
    I defined a few shortcuts in GNOME but they are all predefined and I couldn't see how to point to custom apps like scripts.
    Please share your thoughts  : )

    While we're at it, is there also a tool which lets you bind mouse keys to act as a combination of keyboard/mouse keys?
    E.g. I want to bind one of my mouse keys to act like Alt+Left mouse button (so I can use it to drag windows).
    Is it possible?
    I have only ever used imwheel for tasks like that.
    That almost works. Thing is I can't somehow "tell" imwheel to keep the simulated buttons pressed until I release the real one.
    What a shame.

  • Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working In Layer Style / Blending Options Dialogue Box (Mac OS 10.6.8)

    In the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, my custom Keyboard Shortcuts to zoom in and out of the image is no longer working. Cmd+opt+shift+1 acts as cmd+1 (jumps to Drop Shadow), and cmd+opt+shift+0 acts as cmd+0 (jumps to Stroke). Outside of this box the commands seem to be working fine.
    Example 1: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+1.
    Result 1: The dialogue box shift focus to the Drop Shadow Options instead of the image zooming in to 100%.
    Expected Result 1: The image should zoom to 100%.
    Example 2: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+0.
    Result 2: The dialogue box shift focus to the Stroke Options instead of the image zooming to “Fit on Screen”.
    Expected Result 2: The image should zoom to “Fit on Screen”.
    This same thing happened in the CS5 Beta, and it was quickly fixed, so I hope this is not a complicated issue.
    Thanks, and keep up the wonderful work!

  • Custom keyboard shortcut to merge cells in Numbers?

    How do I create custom keyboard shortcut to merge cells in Numbers? The instructions on the support site say to open Keyboard in preferences then click the +. I don't see a plus anywhere. On any menu.

    The Merge Cell command does not have a keyboard short cut.  You can, however, add one to your user space as follows:
    Open System Preferences, then select the keyboard panel:
    On the left click the "Application Shortcut" then on the right select Numbers.  now click the "+"
    Now enter the exact name of the menu item "Merge Cells" (by looking up the name of the menu item in the menus of Numbers), then selec the "Keyboard Shortcut" field and type the exact key combination you want to use.  Be sure it is unique from other Numbers key combination.

    Is there a way to set custom keyboard shortcuts for Liquify and Vanishing Point filter interfaces in Photoshop CS4? When I change my keyboard shortcuts preferences for Photoshop, they don't change for these filter interfaces. Is there another way?

    what is the problem ??
    I tried to change the shortcut for the Vanishing Point and Liquify from
    Edit -> keyboard shortcuts(button) -> keyboard shortcuts (tab) -> filter (tab)
    and you will find these filters :
    double click on it and make a new shortcut
    but it MUST be Ctrl + (any letter) or you can make it Ctrl + Alt + (any letter)
    but if you made it just one lettre like S for example
    you will can't make a shortcut.

  • Mac Mail custom keyboard shortcuts won't work

    I'm using Mac Mail, trying to set keyboard shortcuts to set flags

    - specify Mail shortcut in dropdown menu

    Then, in Mail app, reading a message, I press the shortcut (ex: OPT/CMD-L), and the flag is not set

    I'm having this exact same problem with Mail.app on Mavericks, and my workaround is exactly the same.  Doesn't it sort of defeat the whole purpose of keyboard shortcuts if I have to grab my mouse to expose the relevant menu?!  Very frustrating.  Does anyone know how to either 1) find a better workaround on our end or 2) convince Apple to fix the problem?
    #2 seems unlikely since custom keyboard shortcuts is probably a pretty rarely used feature...

  • Transfer customized keyboard shortcuts to second Mac?

    I have set up many custom keyboard shortcuts (both system-wide and for specific applications) in the Keyboard Settings panel. Instead of defining them all again, I would like to transfer these to a second Mac that I just purchased.
    I assume this would require copy & paste from a plist file in Preferences - but I couldn't find the right one. Any ideas?
    Thank you!

    The application specific shortcuts are most likely stored in the applications plist file.
    Have a look in com.apple.systempreferences.plist for the system wide ones.
    If that fails use the trick arthur wrote above.

  • Moving/copying custom keyboard shortcuts

    Hi,
    I have PremierPro CS5 running on a MACBook Pro. I have created a load of custom keyboard shortcuts and basically want to copy this file over to another edit machine I work on.
    is this possible!.
    thanks in advance
    Russel

    Yes, I'm aware of these keyboard shortcuts to move the cursor around and for selecting text. But I want to move the actual paragraphs around. So if I have 5 paragraphs, I want to use keyboard shortcuts to more paragraph 3 in front of paragraph 1. Not by selecting the text, cutting the text, moving the curser, and pasting the text.
    In OpenOffice I could set a keyboard shortcut (CtrlShift^) to move the current paragraph above or below the surrounding paragraphs. Is this possible?

  • LCD color profile and Keyboard shortcuts gets screwed up

    My macbook pro is connected to a Dell flat panel to extend the desktop. Recently, and inconsistently, the color profile of my MBP's LCD will get screwed up when I exit from the Screensaver - the external display looks right. Just clicking on display in system preferences immediately corrects the color. But I would like to fix it from not happening every now and then.
    Another problem I notice pretty much in the same sporadic way is that my keyboard shortcuts (F9 to F12) for dashboard and expose gets reset to none - I am not sure if they are even related as of now (can't reproduce it at will)
    Has anyone experienced something like this? Any potential solutions?

  • How can I set up a custom keyboard shortcut for volume control?

    Hi all,
    I use my black MacBook at work, connected to an external monitor and external keyboard. I'm looking for a way to set up the F buttons on my external keyboard as volume control, just as they do on my laptop keyboard. Looking for F3 to F5 to be volume mute, down, and up, respectively.
    I tried going into Keyboard Shortcuts in System Preferences but since there is no menu item for volume control I can't seem to add it. Anyone know how I can go about doing this or what I'm missing?
    Thanks
    Mike

    paste the following into Applescrpt Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities)
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume</pre>
    this script will increase volume by 5 (out of 100) any time you run it. you can adjust this of course. save the script somewhere.
    You can use a 3rd part app launcher to bind a keyboard shortcut to it. I use Butler. there are many others: Quicksilver, ikeys, quickeys, Spark, Launchbar.
    this will work the fastest.
    If you don't want to use 3rd party tools for this you can make a service using automator but that might be a bit slower than the first option. open automator. it will give you a pulldown screen wiuth the choice of what you want to make. choose "service". set it to receive no input and be available in all applications. add the following "run apple script" action to the service
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on run {input, parameters}
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume
    end run</pre>
    save the service, go to keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts->services and make a shortcut for the service you just created.

  • Customizing keyboard shortcuts disables other keystrokes!!

    I have long been a big supporter of customising my keyboard shortcuts. Typically I will change the behaviour of my keyboard F keys in system prefs to return them to 'standard keys'. This then frees up loads of F keys to use as convenient 'one hit' shortcuts, currently not employed in indesign (F1 thru 8 and with extended keyboard also F13 onwards). PS those crazy OS gimmicky F keys can still be accessed by holding down the 'fn' key.
    However as each OS comes out these shortcuts cause other functions to misbehave and the only way I have found to get them back is to stick with the 'default' keyboard set. I haven't though as I have learnt to live with the few that come up.
    Example: Running CS5.5 on OS 10.6.8 (my work setup)
    The most annoying one.. Every time you execute a command which throws up a pop up palette such as Transform/Scale, generally you will enter an amount and hit return. Well when you have your own shortcuts running, all that happens is the 'return' just adds a 'space' in that entry field. So instead you need to physically click on the 'OK' button. Annoying, but not a deal breaker!
    BUT my new home setup is CS3 on 10.10.2 – I know these two are a few years apart but they still work together (even after a shaky start with with Illustrator – another story!)
    So with this setup I am finding many keys on my extended keyboard are functionless when my customised shortcuts are in play, for instance the 4 arrow keys – really useful for incremental movements. So I am currently flashing back and forth between my shortcuts and default – FAR FROM IDEAL. I am coming to the conclusion that the keyboard shortcuts are fast becoming outmoded and I may have to relearn the default set.
    Does anyone have a solution so I can retain my shortcuts, honed over 14 years of Indesign usage?
    Matt

    Michael, I think you right. The moving from one install to another does seem to be the problem as although I did have to re-align a few shortcuts, the majority were inherited. And so I decided to bite the bullet and completely rebuild the entire set and voila, they are working normally again. So thank you for your advice, it is strange that to continue to use your shortcuts, you have to go the long way round! So I'm gonna mark your original answer as 'correct'.

  • Backup of Custom Keyboard Shortcuts

    Hi, I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on my MBP 13" (which already has Snow Leopard on it), but I don't want to have to input all my custom application keyboard shortcuts (about 150 of them!) into System Preferences all over again.
    Is there anyway to back them up, e.g. through a .plist or preference file? I've googled for this and can't find anything that suggests you can.

    custom keyboard shorcuts are not stored in a single place. custom shortcuts for individual applications are stored in preference files for those applications inside your home directory->library->preferences. you'll need to copy those files to the new home directory.
