Custom mouse cursors in JDS

Hi people!
I work in a company that uses Solaris 10 OS on its computers, with JDS and CDE as desktop managers (no ordinary GNOME or KDE installed as optional ones). Before getting this job I wasn't a frequent UNIX/Linux user, though I had a rather good acquaintance with "Unixoid" desktop systems like GNOME and KDE. For some time I was playing with these on Fedora Core 4 on my home computer. One thing I liked was the ability to easily change desktop themes AND cursor themes. Personally, I like the default Fedora Core's Bluecurve theme very much (and its mouse cursor theme in particular). However, on JDS I can't manage to find the way to install additional cursor themes apart from the 4 default ones (small and large black pointers and their inverted white versions). I suppose I could compile and install Bluecurve sources as a whole on my Solaris 10 box (I am already using some of its icons in my $HOME/.themes folder), but I am not sure whether it will affect my cursor choices. Could anyone please clarify the issue?

I've managed to figure out WHY I can't install my custom cursor theme on Solaris 10 on SPARC, but I can't manage to figure out HOW exactly to circumvent this problem (if at all).
The problem is this: Xsun, Sun's only X server for Solaris 10 on SPARC platform, does not support the Xcursor library, that is required for theming cursors. I've downloaded its sources from X.Org's site and somehow managed to compile and install this library at /usr/local/lib directory. But it seems that my system just ignores its presence after restarting JDS and nothing changes. I suppose that it's impossible to "shove" Xcursor up Xsun... So why is it so? It's such a simple and small library that gives a serious boost to the overall usability of the system, then why exclude it? It seems a more than strange decision to me... If anyone knows if it's possible to "force-feed" Xcursor to Xsun, please let me know...

  • Custom Mouse Cursor

    Well I want to be able to make a custom mouse cursor for my project.
    Right now I had tried to set it to an invisible mouse cursor, but it doesn't work.
    I've spent a lot of time on this problem and I have come up blank, so I am hoping that one of you may know the solution.
    Here is my code

        Cursor invisibleCursor = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createCustomCursor(
             Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(""),
             new point(0,0),
             "invisible");
        GIFTest.setCursor(invisibleCursor);
        public GIFTest()

            setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            URL androidPath = this.getClass().getResource("android2.gif");
            AndroidGIF.setIcon(new ImageIcon(androidPath));
            GroupLayout layout = new GroupLayout(getContentPane());
            getContentPane().setLayout(layout);

    I asked the compiler real nice to do that, but it reported that, as well as a variety of other errors, that suggest.
    1) The code you posted will not compile, let alone run.
    2) It is not the code you are using, but 'something like' the code.
    3) You have not yet read the document on the SSCCE *(<- link),* which was recommended on your previous thread.
    Any Ideas?- Post SSCCEs in future.
    - When debugging, break the lines down and test each part.
    E.G.
        Cursor invisibleCursor = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createCustomCursor(
             Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(""),
             new point(0,0),
             "invisible");..should be more along the lines of..
        Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("");
        System.out.println( "image " + image );
        Cursor invisibleCursor = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createCustomCursor(
             image,
             new point(0,0),
             "invisible");- Then, when you see
    image null..in the output, check the JavaDocs for what happens in the method call, if the image is 'null'.
    I outdid myself, went 'above and beyond the call of duty', and corrected the (most obvious) problems in your code. Don't expect me to do it a second time. In future, please post SSCCEs.

  • Mouse cursor dissapears in The Pan|Zoom component

    When using the Pan|Zoom component found at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/fig_panzoom/ inside a mx:Window in my AIR application, the custom mouse cursors (draghandOpen, draghandClosed) are not shown. The mouse cursor just dissapears when rolling over the ImageViewer.
    From the Pan|Zoom code:
                    case "mouseOver":
                        // cursors
                        if (_client.viewRect.containsRect(_reciever))
                            CursorManager.removeAllCursors();
                        } else
                            CursorManager.removeAllCursors();
                            cursorID = CursorManager.setCursor(_iconHandOpen);
    This works fine when running the source at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/fig_panzoom/ as an AIR application. Why won't it work in a mx:window?

    I found the solution here: http://butterfliesandbugs.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/how-to-get-a-custom-cursor-in-an-air-wi ndow/
    The problem was fixed by changing CursorManager.setBusyCursor() to myAIRWindow.cursorManager.setBusyCursor();

  • How to change the mouse cursor icon type when mouse moves out of client area ( propertysheet) WTL?

    I got stuck with an issue in property sheet .I want to load different cursor when the mouse position is within the client area and load another when moves out of the client area.
    In the porpetysheet I added four page. In the first page when I click next I am loading cursor of IDC_WAIT type and loading IDC_ARROW when the mouse moves out of the client area.
    In the page class I triggered the event for WM_MOUSEMOVE as follow:
        MESSAGE_HANDLER(WM_MOUSEMOVE, OnMouseMove)
    LRESULT OnMouseMove(UINT /*uMsg*/, WPARAM /*wParam*/, LPARAM /*lParam*/, BOOL& /*bHandled*/)
    if(TRUE == m_bIsNextBtnClicked)
    ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_WAIT));
    else
    ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_ARROW));
    return TRUE;
    This event is getting triggered and absolutely had no issue with this. Similarly I tried adding `MESSAGE_HANDLER(WM_MOUSELEAVE, OnMouseLeave)` this event making an assumption that this will get triggered if the mouse moves out of the client area,  but
    this event did not get triggered at all.If this is not the mouse event to be triggered for mouseleave which event should I trigger?
    LRESULT OnMouseLeave(UINT /*uMsg*/, WPARAM /*wParam*/, LPARAM /*lParam*/, BOOL& /*bHandled*/)
    ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_ARROW));
    return TRUE;
    Now when I click Next button , **I was actually calling a function which is taking sometime to return** . Before to this function I am loading IDC_WAIT cursor i.e.,
     `::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_WAIT));` .
    Now when move the mouse cursor on to the non-client area I want to load IDC_ARROW cursor i.e.,
        ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_ARROW));
    When the moves on to the non-client area I am handling the mouse event in sheet derived class as follows,
    MESSAGE_HANDLER(WM_NCMOUSEMOVE, OnNCMouseMove)
    LRESULT OnNCMouseMove(UINT /*uMsg*/, WPARAM /*wParam*/, LPARAM /*lParam*/, BOOL& /*bHandled*/)
    ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_ARROW));
    return 0;
    This event is not getting triggered until unless the function in the Next button event is executed.
    I want both of them to be done in parallel i.e, click Next button now hover mouse on the client area, Busy icon should come and when mouse moves out of the client area then IDC_ARROW icon should come.
    LRESULT OnWizardNext()
    ::SetCursor(LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_WAIT));
    m_bIsNextBtnIsClicked = TRUE;
    BOOL bRet = MyFun();
    m_bIsNextBtnIsClicked = FALSE;
    //Until this function(MyFun()) is executed **WM_NCMOUSEMOVE**
    //event is not getting triggered.But this event should get triggered and I
    //should be able to see the change of cursor within and out of client area.
    Can anyone kindly help me to solve this issue.

  • Programmatically change mouse cursor size

    LV 8.5 on Windows XP
    Is there a way to change the size of the mouse cursor (custom or otherwise) programmatically? I can load custom cursors using included vi's but can't find a way to change the size - the cursor vi's are locked so I don't know what is going on behind them.
    Thanks

    smercurio,
    I had found that thread but the API example is written in 5.1, unfortunately I have wiped this machine several times since running 7.1 and would rather not reinstall if I can avoid it. (As I understand it 7.X can open the 5.X and THEN I can open in 8.X)
    I will look around for a machine running 7 and go from there but any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks again!

  • GNOME3: Ugly mouse cursors

    Hi everyone!
    I have a small issue with my Gnome3 desktop: It uses the default (ugly) X mouse cursors.
    Am I missing some package or setting?
    Edit: It's even more weird because it may suddenly change to the correct cursors during a session until i logout.
    Last edited by init0 (2011-04-12 17:33:46)

    I have found a lot of customisation options which normally have a corresponding ~/.xxx folder for user specific config (eg /usr/share/themes, /usr/share/icons etc.) are not currently working in Gnome 3 by default. I am sure it is the $XDG_DATA_DIRS (or similar) environment variables not being set to look in /home first (I am sure this will be corrected as Gnome 3 matures and the devs add user config options).
    I have found my cursors work correcty (in all but firefox) (using custom Silver-3D cursors). One thing that may help (it has helped solve my "some windows use my cursors and some don't" issue)
    in /usr/share/icons create a folder called default. In that folder, create a file called index.theme and populate as follows:
    [Icon Theme]
    Inherits=xxxxxxx
    Where xxxxxx is the name of your theme of choice. The added bonus of doing this is that GDM will use your selected cursor theme as well.
    GDM is actually what I have been working on theming today. I have customised the background, cursors, icons, sound theme (I'll admit it, I like a system-ready sound when GDM comes up) and GTK3 themes for it. Now I just have to translate that to my shell.
    Cheers.

  • Mouse cursor disappearing in Lotus Notes

    Hi all,
    Lotus Notes uses the normal windows cursor except for areas like the inbox / folder tree and non-active tabs, in these areas the cursor changes to their custom hand cursor.
    In these areas where on any other environment you see the hand, on the Sunray a black cursor.
    Does anyone has any suggestions / fixes for this issue.
    I'm running "Lotus Notes 8.5.1 (basic)" on Windows-XP (SP3) and SRS5.1
    Thanx

    Hello, I was wondering if you ever figured out more about this? I'm using a G600 mouse also, but this issue doesn't seem to be button related to me. It happens, so far, when I launch 3 programs: Parole, VLC, and Dwarf Fortress.
    I have a post about it, but I'm visiting this one to see if you found out something with the mouse that I haven't yet.
    I haven't, sorry . My workaround to the buttons thing was just to unbind them all (in Windows...), but I'm not sure why this mouse and X don't get along.

  • Get screenshot with mouse cursor and send for client application

    I took
    this function for getting a screenshot from a client application. I to tried adapt this function in my project, but I can not capture desktop showing mouse cursor (coming from a remote pc) in my server application (controller).
    Here is my adaptation (in client side) but without success:
    void SendScreenProc()
    // Send First Bitmap
    MemoryStream streamScreen = new MemoryStream();
    this.bmpScreenSend = CaptureScreen(true);//new Bitmap(this.boundScreen.Width, this.boundScreen.Height, PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb);

    g.CopyFromScreen(0, 0, 0, 0, this.boundScreen.Size);
    this.bmpScreenSend.Save(streamScreen, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Png);
    Compress.CompressStream(streamScreen);
    Byte[] bufferScreen = streamScreen.ToArray();
    mreSendData.WaitOne();
    this.queueSendData.AddScreen(streamScreen.GetBuffer());
    streamScreen.Close();
    this.receivedScreen = 0;
    while (this.remoted)
    // Send next bitmap result by difference with previous bitmap.
    if(this.receivedScreen == 0) {
    } else {
    Bitmap bmpCurrentScreen = CaptureScreen(true);//new Bitmap(this.boundScreen.Width, this.boundScreen.Height, PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb);
    g = Graphics.FromImage(bmpCurrentScreen);
    g.CopyFromScreen(0, 0, 0, 0, this.boundScreen.Size);
    if (this.receivedScreen == 1) {
    if(this.bmpScreen != null) {
    this.bmpScreen.Dispose();
    this.bmpScreen = this.bmpScreenSend;
    } else if(this.receivedScreen == 2) {
    if (queueSendData.AvailableScreenAdd && IsDifferent(bmpCurrentScreen, this.bmpScreen))
    streamScreen = new MemoryStream();
    Bitmap bmpDiff = XorBitmap(this.bmpScreen, bmpCurrentScreen);
    bmpDiff.Save(streamScreen, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Png);
    this.bmpScreenSend.Dispose();
    bmpDiff.Dispose();
    this.bmpScreenSend = bmpCurrentScreen;
    mreSendData.WaitOne();
    this.queueSendData.AddScreen(streamScreen.GetBuffer());
    streamScreen.Close();
    this.receivedScreen = 0;

  • How to identify mouse cursor image?

    I am doing some testing in java- everything else so far is working, but I can't find out how to.. find which image the mouse pointer is. I need to be able to tell when a mouse cursor goes over a link and displays the right cursor. It switches between the default arrow, the little hand for links, and a custom cursor, but I don't know how to retrieve that information.
    Any ideas?
    At first I was going to just use screenshots- but cannot capture mouse cursor/icon that way, and this way would work better.
    Thanks!

    That would make sense, but I haven't found any functions on "get the cursor for the component", or of anything related to getting the cursor.
    I was going to use the robot to move to two specified points on the screen, but then I still have the issue of somehow retrieving any information about the cursor(aside from position/clicks). Would you know offhand which package/function(method) would have it? That one only showed stuff related to movement/events, no cursor information besides position/clicks.
    Thanks!

  • Custom Mouse, Hover Over Effect [AS2]

    Hi y'all,
    So I like the idea of a custom mouse pointer, but I really need to keep hover over effects.
    So this flash will be on top of my html page, so it looks cool, but I want people to still tell if they are on a link by displaying a mouse like the one you see when you hover over things.
    Does anyone have any ideas for how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Christopher

    Good question... never done that before, but took a stab at it for you. Try the below out.
    Change the movieName var to the name of your swf file.
    Change the path to the correct scope and frame label of your cursor.
    thisMovie(movieName).TGotoLabel("_level0/myArrowMC/","normalState");
    <script language="JavaScript">
    var movieName = "Untitled-1";
    function thisMovie(movieName) {
      // IE and Netscape refer to the movie object differently.
      // This function returns the appropriate syntax depending on the browser.
      if (navigator.appName.indexOf ("Microsoft") !=-1) {
        return window[movieName]
      }            else {
        return document[movieName]
    function movieIsLoaded (theMovie) {
    // Checks if movie is completely loaded.
      if (typeof(theMovie) != "undefined") {
        return theMovie.PercentLoaded() == 100;
      } else {
        return false;
    function mouseOver() {
      if (movieIsLoaded(thisMovie(movieName))) {
    thisMovie(movieName).TGotoLabel("_level0/myArrowMC/","hoverState");
    function mouseOut() {
      if (movieIsLoaded(thisMovie(movieName))) {
    thisMovie(movieName).TGotoLabel("_level0/myArrowMC/","normalState");
    </script>

    How do I go about creating an 'animated mouse cursor', could someone point me in the right direction please.
    Thank you in advance.

    Make an array of custom cursors, then loop through the different images every 20 ms

  • Custom Busy Cursor

    Has anyone implemented a custom busy cursor or know how to do
    this?
    Thanks
    Chris
    [email protected]

    Hi,
    I need animated busy Cursor.  If i implement the above code then i got only image in place of Mouse Pointer.
    i.e If you take the above example, i am not getting animation of the HourGlass.
    Assume that i have animated PNG file.  How can i play the animation when i set that image as "busyCursor" as part of CursorManager.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Santhosh

  • New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

    I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
    I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
    I'm not sure what the problem could be...
    Here is my output from 'startx'

    To run twm, you need to install xorg-twm from [extra] (I am not sure if it installs by default). Do you have xterm installed?
    According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
    I do indeed.
    I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
    I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

    On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

    I managed to boot the computer and get the desktop to show. I now have a "repaired" computer. There are several problems that have cropped up. One is that I can only start up now in Safe Boot mode. Is there a way to turn it off? Also, I do not have a sound list, so I can't access anything requiring audio. Google Chrome only shows up as a white screen. Pictures that loaded before don't load in browsers, etc. Any suggestions? I figure I should reinstall Mac OS Lion for starts, maybe even do a mirror backup and reformat the drive. I think this drive has turned into scrambled eggs...what a headache!

  • What causes a slow mouse/cursor response on a fast machine?

    I have a system that has always displayed poor cursor redraw performance with certain adobe applications.   All rendering and other effects are fast, but basic mouse selections and button knobs are extremely unresponsive.   I have searched and searched and can not seem to find out what causes the mouse cursor speed issues.   Does anyone have any ideas as to why my mouse would slow for such basic Interface interactions?    Do I need to change my hardware, settings, displays, BIOS, etc?
    Any insight into what the mouse redraw/refresh is called in terms of computing would help me search for a solution.  And if you have a solution as to why my mouse cursor acts drunk and sluggish when interacting with the Adobe UI's in premiere and after effects and sometimes Photoshop I would greatly appreciate the help.
    Thank You.  I attached a screen shot of a very basic selection interaction that is dog slow.  The selection box redraws like there is a lag in some process associated with the square box overlay.

    Your answer is in this part of your specs:
    > (driving two 30 inch dell monitors)
    It takes a long time to draw and redraw the pixels to the screen(s) with such large monitors.
    We can mitigate this by making some changes in how our UI is drawn to the screen, and such changes are a rather high priority for use to work on for the near future.
