Custom Numbered List Sequence (example: F, G, H, J, K)

Hey all,
Is it possible to create a custom numbering sequence for a numbered list in InDesign?
For example, rather than have my list go: F, G, H, I, J, K, we'd like to skip the I at every iteration and go straight to J.
The reason for this is I work for a testing company, and our answer sheets don't have the letter I on them.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

  • Using custom numbered lists

    I want to create section headings that looks like this:
    1.0  PROJECT SCOPE
       1.1 Introduction
         1.1.1 Work By Others
    By default Pages starts numbered lists like:
    1. PROJECT SCOPE
    How do I get pages to formatt numbered lists like I want above?  This style of formatting is quite typical when creating work scopes for engineering purposes, at least where I come from.
    Thanks!

    If you think that useful feature is missing, use the dedicated channel :
    Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu , describe what you wish.
    Then, cross your fingers, and wait at least for iWork'11 or 12 ;-)

    An other helper, peterBreis offers such a service but, as it's not the way I behave, I never took time to write his site's link somewhere.

  • Custom numbered list

    My Pages '09 only has Roman and Arabic. How do I implement numbered list in Devanagari?

    I think you would have to create such a list manually.
    You can ask Apple to add the feature you want via

  • Creating Custom Bullets & Lists in Pages 5.0

    I cannot figure out how to create a custom numbered list in Pages 5.0. I had custom LISTS on my 4.3 Docs that did not migrate to 5.0. How do I create duplicate LIST STYLE in 5.0?
    Thank you for your help.

    On the format menu on the right side, there is the font section, alignment section, spacing section, and bullets & lists section. Next to the bullets & lists section is a drop-down menu of preset lists. At the top-right of this menu is a plus sign. Clicking on this will allow you to create a new list in that menu and title it. From there, you will have to manually create your custom list change the type of bullets (numbers, roman numerals, letters, etc.) -- you might need to click on the disclosure triangle to the left of the bullets & lists title to see this part. When you finish with your custom list, there will be an asterik next to the title of the list, and if you click on that title, the drop-down menu will open up again and you can hit "Update" next to your list name. This should save the style for that custom list. Here is the most important part: When you have finished making this list, make sure you save the document as a template and select that template if you ever want to use that list. I have found that a custom list in a document (saved or deleted) that is not made into a template does not carry over into other documents. Setting up this custom list may take a while, but hopefully it will work and make things easier. I hope this makes sense, and let me know if you cannot understand something. Hopefully this picture will help too.

  • How do I restart a numbered list?

    Hello all,
    First of all, I have to say, I can't believe how long it is taking me to set up my project. It seems like the most basic functionality in FM does not translate easily to RH. The lack of documentation around TCS3 Frame to Robohelp linking is simply unbelievable. Am I the only one who is frustrated and missing deadlines because of this?
    Anyway, I have encountered another problem with numbered lists.
    My list consists of two Framemaker paragraph tags. One that sets the counter back to 1 (used for the first item in a list), and then another tag for list items 2 and onwards.
    Here is the problem:
    I am using the Multilevel lists feature to set up my lists, which, for the most part works fine.
    The only problem I am encountering is this:
    when I have two lists within the same topic, I cannot get the second list to restart at 1!  Has anyone been able to figure this out with the multilevel lists?
    I know I can manually reset the counter from within Robohelp, but that defeats the purpose of linking my FrameMaker document. I cannot go and find all my lists in Robohelp and restart the numbering there. There has to be an automated way to do this.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.
    Sue

    Jeff:
    I wonder if you had any luck creating a style that starts at one and mapping to it? I tried to do something similar, but ultimately came up against all the same problems I've been experiencing from the beginning linking FM>RH with numbered lists.
    If you map to a single Paragraph and associated Multilevel List Style, you get this:
    Heading 1
    1.
    2.
    3.
    Heading 2
    4.
    5.
    6.
    I thought I would be clever and try to duplicate the method for restarting numbered lists in FM (two styles, the initial number with style and <n=1> and subsequent number mapped to one style using <n+>.
    I created two RH Paragraph Styles to map over. For each Paragraph Style, I used Autonumber, Create/Edit Custom Sequence to try to mimic this numbering sequence. The first style starts and one, and that works fine. But you run into the same problem when you create the second Autonumber list that starts at 2:
    Heading 1
    1.
    2.
    3.
    Heading 2
    1.
    4.
    5.
    To be more clear, this is only a problem when you have more than one numbered list on the same page using the same numbering style.
    This is a huge problem for those linking FM files in RH. Leaving the style as "source" in the mapping is unacceptable. For me it trails off the left side of the page and you cannot even see the number.
    The only thing that comes close to a workaround is "convert to text." But the formatting is just terrible. There is no way to control the indentation between the number and the beginning text in the list. Since all of our documentation is task-oriented, with numbered steps, suddenly this shortcoming has just doomed all of our documentation to a terribly sloppy and unprofessional aesthetic.
    If anyone has any other insights regarding how this could work, please contact me.
    Thanks,
    Douglas

  • RH8 conversion (bullet images and numbered lists are different)

    Version 8.0.2.208
    Conversion of 1200 htm files.
    Has anyone experience bullet images in their custom styles changing from RH7 to RH8 and numbers in numbered lists resized?
    Bullets
    I noticed that all my bullet images have changed. They are OK in Design view, but change when the topics are previewed and generated.
    For example, if the style used a small square bullet image, it was changed to the bullet used at the beginning of this sentence.
    If I attempt to create a new bullet list in the existing topic using the Normal style (Arial 12)  and Formatting Toolbar (Bullets), the bullet and text are changed to (Arial 10) and the style name changes to (none) in Design view. Preview and generated is also Arial 10 for both.
    Numbered Lists
    Most of the existing converted topics used the Normal style and Formatting Toolbar (Numbers) for numbered lists. There is spacing between each numbered line. The numbers and text are in (Arial 12) in Design view, but the numbers are (Arial 10) when the topics are previewed and generated and the text remains (Arial 12).
    If I select the numbered list, click the numbered list icon to turn off numbering, and then click to turn on numbering, the numbers and text are (Arial 10) and the style is changed to (none). Output and preview are (Arial 10). The spacing between the numbered items is deleted.
    I have to then highlight that list and change the style back to Normal for (Arial 12) text.
    If I attempt to create a new numbered list in the existing topic using the Normal style (Arial 12)  and Formatting Toolbar (Bullets), the bullet and text are changed to (Arial 10) and the style name changes to (none) in Design view. Preview and generated is also Arial 10 for both.
    This has taken up a lot of my time. Any clues?
    Donna

    I went to the link you provided.I am still confused as to the step by step procedure to fix my custom bullet style that is used throughout my project. Can you globally fix this issue? It would be too time consuming to figure out where in 1200 topics this style is used. I guess I don't understand list styles.
    Custom Style = BulletList
    My custom (BulletList) style -  Design mode:
    Preview mode (incorrect)
    Another topic using ths sam (BulletList) style - Preview mode (incorrect should be square bullets)
    I select Format > Styles in design mode. Right-click on BulletList, select Edit.
    If I ceate a bulleted list, the square bullet is selected.

  • (none) style gets applied to numbered list & font size not matching text in my style sheet

    RoboHelp 9 (9.0.2.271)
    Something is wrong with my style sheet, and it only started happening after I created Master Page for the first time. This happens whether or not the new Master Page is applied to a topic:  Every time I type any text in a topic, then click the Numbered List icon in the toolbar, the style goes from Normal to (none), and the font changes from my style sheet's Normal 10pt to 8pt, for the number as well as the text.
    I don't see how the new Master Page has anything to do with it because it's not applied to this particular topic.  I had created a Master Page in RoboHelp HTML and applied my style sheet, then my topics to it. I have a footer in the Master Page and applied 8pt font using inline formatting (not the style sheet).
    I created a new project to see what would happen.
    When I apply my style sheet, then apply the numbered list to text, the text font is correct (10pt), but the number font is wrong (8pt).
    But when I apply the default style sheet to the topic, the number font and text font match.
    How can I get the number and text fonts to match in my style sheet?
    I found a workaround by applying inline formatting to the next (10pt) after selecting the text and clicking the numbered list icon.  Below is the html code.  The numbered steps in red are the ones that are not correct (8 pt).  The code with the correct formatting (after I applied inline formatting) is in blue.
    <body>
    <h1>My Overview</h1>
    <p>example</p>
    <ol type="1">
    <li>first step</li>
    <li>second step</li>
    </ol>
    <ol type="1">
    <li style="font-size: 10pt;">Fixed by applying inline formatting to
      10pt after selecting the numbered list icon</li>
    <li style="font-size: 10pt;">next step</li>
    </ol>
    <p>&#160;</p>
    <?rh-placeholder type="footer" ?>
    </body>
    Thanks.

    Amebr,
    That was helpful.  I'm looking at a topic now, and both the Apply Style list on the Formatting toolbar show (none) when I click a numbered list that I created using the Created a Numbered List or Create a Bulleted List on the toolbar.
    This is the html code for the correct font (10pt):
    <ol>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar (which is inline formatting)</li>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar&#160;(which is inline formatting)</li>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar&#160;(which is inline formatting)</li>
    </ol>
    Both styles list show the correct custom styles I created for numbered lists, though.  Below is the code (correct font):
    <ol>
    <li class="p-ProcedureSteps"><p class="ProcedureSteps">this is from
      my custom numbered style and looks correct</p></li>
    </ol>
    What's strange is, if I create a list and highlight it, then click the Apply Numbered List button in the toolbar, the numbers and text font size changes to 8 point and my Normal font is 10 pt, and both style lists show (none).  That's what I wanted to figure out in my original post.  I opened up the stylesheet and I don't see where that's applied.  In Flare, you can easily see in a table how the styles are formatted, down to each class.
    This is the code for the incorrect font (8pt):
    <ol type="1">
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    </ol>
    Below is a screenshot.
    Maybe someone can figure this out. Thanks!

  • Alphabetize numbered list styles?

    Any feature for this? Seems useful..

    Think hierarchical sequencing, with several subcategories. DNA etc..
    Numbers aren't characters, and vice versa, we use numbers for different things, specifically mostly to count, not speak.
    Number list in my case (and many I'd assume) only provide sequencing of topics (for a list, or a referenc).  I'd like to ORDER all of those numbered items in the list, by their first alpha character.  Since I'm not able at this current time to pre-order 100+ items when drafting my work.
    Example:
    (as is, prior to alphabetizing)
    1.0 O
    2.0 H
    3.0 N
    4.0 C
    5.0 P
    (after alphabetizing)
    1.0 C
    2.0 H
    3.0 N
    4.0 O
    5.0 P
    Or any number:
    1.0 some alpha character
    2.0 somer alpha character
    N some alphha character
    //applicable to any level or sub-level of numbered lists
    So everything's orderly - automatically, so I'm not performing elementary alphetizing for every occurence, and cutting, scrolling/page/spread selecting & then pasting, 100 times.

  • How can I customize Microsoft Word Outline Numbered List Templates with AppleScript?

    I wrote an applescript to set up a word document with the appropriate styles to give the document an academic setup, much like what Xelatex produces. This is a work in progress and I have a problem.
    I have successfully applied the style changes to each Header and I have applied the desired outline numbered list template "list template 5 of list gallery 3", however I would like to add tab stops to each one in order to make each header look slick like in Latex.
    To do what I want manually in Microsoft Word 2011 mac I would click Bullets and Numbering, customize, under text position i would check the tab stop box and put in some value (1 cm, for example)
    The following is an approximation of the result of running this script on a document with headings 1-9 applied consequently to each line, respectively. Note how they are not even. I think this is an issue with the template, but I want to be able to run this script on any mac without extra template files.
    1    Heading 1
    1.1    Heading 2
    1.1.1    Heading 3
    1.1.1.1    Heading 4
    1.1.1.1.1    Heading 5
    1.1.1.1.1.1 Heading 6
    1.1.1.1.1.1.1        Heading 7
    1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1Heading 8
    1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Heading 9
    Here is the script so far:

  • How do I set numbered lists for headings in Pages 5.2, and keep that system of numbered lists saved?

    I have tried to set numbered lists for headings in Pages 5.2 but have not succeeded. I have read similar questions concerning this but this has not helped me...
    When I say numbered lists I mean something extremely important and simple, for instance:
    1. Introduction
    1.1. Background
    1.2. Purpose and Questions
    2. The Legality of Clause X
    2.1. Legality under Article 101.1
    2.2. Legality under Article 101.3
    And so on...
    Heading 1. is selected as "Heading", 1.1 is selected as "Heading 2", and if I had 1.1.1 it would be selected as "Heading 3" and so on...
    I have navigated my way to the Format window, and under the tab "Style" and down to "Bullets & Lists". I have here selected the following: Numbered, Numbers, 1. 2. 3. 4., Tiered Numbers, Continue from previous.
    There are several problems with this currently.
    First, based on the example it becomes "2. Background" when it should be "1.1 Background" instead.
    Second, after writing some body text between the headings and then select a new heading, all the previously selected settings I mentioned above in "Bullets & Lists" have to be reselected.
    So, how do I set numbered lists for headings, or so called sub-headings, in Pages 5.2? And how do I keep that selected system of numbered lists saved so I don't have to retype it for every new heading I type? (e.g. so that Pages knows that every time I choose Heading 2, I want it to number the heading in the way selected)
    Obviously, manually writing the numbers for every heading is not a viable option, as it makes table of contents problematic and is simply tedious. You need an automatic way of doing it, especially if you write long documents where keeping headings in order is absolutely essential.
    Also, reverting back to previous Pages versions (like v. 9 I think?) is not an option as that does not exist on my recently purchased Macbook Pro.
    I need to be able to do this on Pages 5.2 and do it automatically.
    I appreciate any help with this.

    iWork '09 is not "outdated" it still works and works extremely well and whilst not perfect with MsWord it is far far better than Pages 5.2 which has a stream of major issues with exporting. It is also way better and faster to use than Microsoft Office.
    So what is your time and work actually worth? If it is less than $19.99 for 6 months, you may as well just chuck it in and take that job on minimum wages.
    You are assuming things for Office 2014 with absolutely no inside knowledge. Much as we assumed Pages 5 was going to be the long awaited improvement, but ended up being a downgrade to match the iOS version, Microsoft is headed the same way with their mobile versions.
    This is not like getting the "latest" pair of pants where you go with the crowd and throw out your cigarette legs which replaced the flares, which replaced your low cuts which replaced your cigarette legs, which replaced…
    This is work.
    If it does the job and does it well, use it. There is nothing out there to really match what Pages '09 does. Yet.
    LibreOffice can do most but not all, but has a UI that only a mother could love. It's great redemption is that it uses both open formats and the standard Microsoft formats and is under active development. It also opens and saves to just about everything. When they finally work out the Pages formats, I'm sure they will open those as well.
    I use a lot of professional software. Just because the publisher's marketing department says change the product so we can sell more, doesn't mean you have to pay any attention whatsoever. Adobe being a classical example. Most designers are just ignoring their latest subscription based bloatware and getting on with their work.

  • Find numeric numbering list, Indesign CS3,Windows

    1. I LIKE
    a. Mango
    b. Orance
    2. Did you know
    a. yes
    b. no
    In this two list I want only numeric numbering list. I wrote the javascript code like
    text_frame.paragraphs[pa].bulletsAndNumberingListType;
    but it shows all the numerice and alphabetic list.
    Please Help

    Thanks for the additional information, but unfortunately it still leaves me a bit confused.  We have only used InDesign CS3 and CS4 with the regular Adobe Paragraph Composer, and it works just fine except for the one font - Adobe Thai.  This font works well also except when a tone mark is needed above a punctuation mark - thats the only time we see a problem?
    Can you read Thai? Your post confuses me, too. I see that no Thai fonts work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer turned on. I don't work in Thai very often - my SE Asian script expertise is concentrated in Lao, Cambodian, and Burmese - but I have some sample Thai randomly harvested from the Internet, and a collection of Thai fonts, and none of them work without the World-Ready Composer turned on. Follow the link I posted previously and read about it.
    These are all generic MS fonts. I suppose that someone clever w/OpenType might be able to make a font that would render correctly in the normal Paragraph Composer, which is why I asked you to name any font that did work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer. I would like to know about it.
    Even with the World-Ready Composer, I'm not willing to say that the Thai is being rendered well - I don't read Thai, so I am not suited to make judgments on good typography, but the Paragraph Composer examples above are obviously less correct than the World-Ready Composer examples.
    I'm not even going to talk about CS3. Try this experiment yourself and post a screenshot.

  • Robohelp 10 output line spacing for numbered lists is off

    I wondered if you have had this situation occur with your output from Robohelp 10.
    I created my help system and CSS using Robohelp 10. My CSS contains a numbered list style and an alpha list style, both having line spacing of 3pt before and 3pt after. Looks great in Robohelp WYSIWYG, but the generated output (in IE and Chrome) looks bad. The numbered list line has way too much line spacing after (the next style is a non-numbered list style) and the alpha list has way too little line spacing.
    I tried playing around with changing the line spacing but it does not change the output!
    Thought I'd reach out to see if you have experienced this issue and the most expedient way to resolve.
    Here is an example of HTML tags in Robohelp:
    numbered list
    <?rh-list_start level="1" an="1" class="rl-p-1ListNumber" start="1" style="list-style: rh-list;
      list-style: rh-list;" ?><p class="1ListNumber">instruction text.</p><?rh-list_end ?>
    alpha list
    <?rh-list_start level="1" an="1" class="rl-p-Alpha" style="list-style: rh-list;
      list-style: rh-list;" ?><p class="Alpha">Instruction text.</p><?rh-list_end ?>
    thanks much

    If you create a single topic project showing this problem and send it to me as directed on the Contact page of my site, I will take a look.

  • Automatic space after numbered list items

    Is it possible to have pages automatically add a space after the number and dot with numbered lists? For example, have it automatically add the text "II. " as opposed to "II.". It would save me having to keep typing the space. Thanks

    OK, I figured it out. For anybody else with the same question, you click inspector (on the toolbar), the "text" tab, then the "list" tab. You have to change it for each number indent, but change the text indent. I found that something between .25" and .3" is good for me.

  • Conditional build tags and numbered lists

    Is there a way to get numbered lists to automatically update
    when conditional tags are used? For example, only step 6 of a 10
    step list is needed for 1 of 4 products. However, when I preview
    the content for the 3 of 4 products that do not require that step,
    the list is numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, etc.

    Hi darwinsfolly.
    Have you checked the Trusecode to see if there is anything
    amiss there? Perhaps a nested <ol start=x> tag?

  • ID CS5: Numbered lists export to epub incorrectly

    Hello,
    I'm working with Indesign CS5 to convert a print textbook to epub format. I have quite a few numbered lists to make. For example:
    1.
    2.
    3.
    and outline-styled lists
    I.
         A.
              1.
              2.
         B.
    II.
         A.
         B.
    I followed a very helpful video by Anne-Marie Concepcion about creating paragraph styles for each numbering "level." It has worked fine on the screen, but when I export to epub and preview the book on an iPad, some of the numbering messes up. Normal numbering (eg: simple 1, 2, 3 lists) work fine, but when I have outline-styled lists, it appears like this:
    1.
         1.
              1.
              1.
         1.
    How  can I fix this? Any help would be appreciated!
    Edit: I found a somewhat similar question online that ended up fixing the problem. If you are wondering how to fix it, go to the export epub dialogue window and select the option to convert the bullets and numbering to text.

    Well,
    Duplicate the file (save as) with another name.
    Let's suppose a file with 300 pages. file1 "save as" to file2.
    In the file1 go to page 151, and clean all the rest of the text and pages.
    In the file2 go to page 150, and clean the text before the page 151 and delete the white pages.
    Remember, delete pages don't clean the text, you have to delete the text too.
    Create a book (File/New/Book...), give a name and add the file1 and file2, automatically, the pages are been renumerated.
    Att.
