Custom Organizing of Itunes Library - Part 2

Hello, Jim - I am a brand-new discussion member, was sent here after 2 one-to-one sessions where the tutors couldn't tell me how to organize my iTunes music library. When I typed a "Search" for this, your comments to others indicated you're very knowledgeable about this, so I hope you see this.
I bought a terrabyte HD to which I have moved my iTunes. I wanted to begin moving the massive music library over there (all uncompressed, ergo the TB) and have begun this with a great deal of hassle. I have tried to organize the library the way my real-life library is organized on my shelves: artist (last name, for those of us who have an IQ above room temperature!), and then separately, the compilations/boxed sets that have various artists sometimes - concerts, operas, original cast and soundtrack recordings, things like this. The Apple Store kids told me I couldn't do this, :-O - find that hard to fathom! It isn't even the Dewey decimal system! Do you have any suggestions to help me that doesn't have me making ridiculous playlists I will never use? In addition to having stuff disorganized all over my library, I also find that cuts/tracks WITHIN a recording get imported all out of order.
Many thanks in advance for whatever you can suggest - apologies for being so long-winded, but it was a long ridiculous road getting here, and it's been extremely frustrating paying for these one-hour sessions with people who may not even have commercial recordings of their own!
Cheers -

Momus15,
As I said earlier, it's best to start your own thread rather than "Threadjack" on another's. It makes it difficult for the original poster to sort through answers to his own question. Also, since this question is already marked as "Answered", few others will read it. You can click on "Back to Topic List" below and then you'll find the "Post New Topic" right under the forum name at the top left. I also recommend glancing at the "Help and Terms of Use" link at the right under the Welcome Momus15.
You can find out a lot about iTunes by using the iTunes help menu. When the help window opens, there is a "Index" link at the far right. Looking at sorting you'll find:
Information about the items in your library, such as artist and other song information, is stored in the item's Info window (select an item and choose File > Get Info). You can use this information to sort the items in your library or create playlists. You can even change the information to suit your needs. For example, you might want to:
◼Group individual movements on a classical CD into one work by indicating the movement (for example, “Piano concerto in A Minor, Op. 54”) in the Grouping field.
◼Group songs that are part of a compilation together in your library by selecting the “Part of a compilation” checkbox. Then choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and then select “Group compilations when browsing.”
◼Identify the individual artists on a tribute album in the Artist field, and then type “various” in the Album Artist field.
◼Create your own genre category by choosing Custom from the Genre pop-up menu.
◼Change the order in which tracks on a CD play by changing the numbers in the Track Number fields.
◼Create a Smart Playlist that includes only songs that are just the right speed for your workout by adding the number of beats per minute to the BPM field.
◼Identify a movie as a music video (click the Video tab and then choose Music Video from the Video Kind pop-up menu).
◼Click the Sorting tab and enter custom text to sort by.
You'll find more info about sorting in these articles:

  • Itunes Library Will Not Organize

    Hi All,
I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to organizing my itunes library. Usually I have no problems because I am content with how itunes keeps my library organized. However, I have noticed in the last few months that my library will not stay organized even though the preferences are set for it to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    THX.

I seem to be having the same problem. Recently ripped my entire CD collection, and somewhere along the way, all the files started getting dumped into 'Unknown Artist\Unknown Album\' even though the album and artist information is displayed properly within iTunes.
    Anybody make a suggestion?

    Hi,
I have re-organized my iTunes library a while ago (new playlists, different location of the files, everything in AAC, etc., but now I can't see my music anymore in iPhoto. All I see is the old iTunes library and I can't figure out how to 're-sync' this with my current library.

  • HT204053 iTunes Library question

Organizing my iTunes Library I somehow deleted my 1500+ songs, it's empty! They're still on my iPhone though.
    So my question is:
How do I transfer my music FROM my iPhone TO my MacBook Pro so I can restore my Library the way it was? Only 10% of these songs was purchased on the iTunes store so I already transfer those but... that didn't help too much.
I thought my music would be in the cloud but I don't even know where to find it. Not sure if it's because my iTunes Apple ID is different from my iCloud Apple ID which HAS to be a @me.com account in order to sync emails, etc.
    Thanks in advance!

You can't just delete tunes like that, they would at least go into the trash, however if you have since emptied the trash, you will need to restore from your computer backup.

  • How would I save my customized iTunes library interface?

    Hello all
I want to reboot my hard drive due to some operating problems and corrupted files, and as I did rudely discover in my previous attempts, all information in my personalized iTunes library along with (obviously) the program itself was lost, despite my attempt at backing the library up.
Now, I have amassed and organized a somewhat large collection of music on my iTunes again, have all the files backed up outside the computer itself, and I need to do a bit of house cleaning. So I guess my question is whether there is any way I can save the interface of my iTunes library, edited and customized information and all?
    thanks in advance

You cannot use his library any more than he can use yours. You can, however, use Home Sharing:

  • I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though, itunes automatically putting books on my idevices

I'm trying to get organized and I just added a bunch of books and pdfs to my itunes library. They were all added immediately to my ipad and iphone even though I did not want this. I added them to itunes using add to library and I have both devices set to sync only selected books.
How do I do this in the future so this doesnt happen? Its a lot of work to now manually erase them from each device and it sent my phone over capacity.
    thanks

I dont see the difference in the posts. I dont think theres anything inaccurate or misleading about what I wrote. The items were immediately added to my ipad and my iphone, even though I have them both set to sync only select items. As soon as I added new titles to my itunes library, they were immediately added to the devices. Not on the next sync. Immediately. Both devices were plugged into the computer at the time. Sorry if I failed to mention they were plugged in but I dont see the signifigance youre making out of it. The problem persists anyway.
Now that I did a test without the devices plugged in, the new items were still added as soon as I plugged my devices into the computer ( I do not have them set to sync over wifi).
Since I have both devices set to manually select items to sync, of course I want to manually select new items to sync. For instance, I am not going to read any of these magazines or books on my phone, ever, and I dont want to waste valuable space with them.
    So I'm trying your advice:
I just tried deselecting sync books. It erased all content from ibooks on my device. I then dragged
one title onto the device, and it just goes back to syncing select books, with the one title selected.
It appears that wont work to solve my issue. The next time I add something to itunes it will be put on my phone. Is this really something most people want? To select to manualy control what content is synced, but then have things automatically added. It seems inconsistent to me.

  • Moving just part of an iTunes library?

    Hi,
I posted this over in the iTunes Forum... but nobody replied, and as I thought more about it, it seems like it may be more of a Finder related problem.
I just got a new MacBook and would like to move some of my music from my old iMac (which is running 10.4.11) to my new computer.... my problem is, I have over 2,000 songs on my original iMac... but I don't want all 2,000 on my new MacBook... There is a lot of stuff that I don't listen to anymore or wasn't too fond of in the beginning but it somehow ended up in my library anyway. I'd like to keep my new MacBook iTunes Library more organized, so I went through all 2,000 and picked about 1,200 that I want to move to my new computer. I just made a playlist with the songs that I want to keep. (The music is a mixture of iTunes purchases and CD rips, if it makes any difference.)
My plan was to just drag those songs right from iTunes to a portable LaCie hard drive that I have, and then import them on my MacBook, but when I drag the files to the hard drive, it says "Preparing To Copy"... it even begins to list the songs on my hard drive... but then it all goes away.
I just tried to do a screen capture so you could see exactly what I mean, but now it doesn't even say Preparing To Copy! Just take a look for yourself: http://www.deandagati.com/itunes2.mov
If I try to copy a single song it works.... even a few songs at a time works.... and I got it to do 100 songs ONCE... but now it won't do that anymore either.... It seems like my iMac is being temperamental... or is this some kind of crazy security thing?
Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated =)
    Thanks!

For anyone who has this problem in the future - I have a solution!
I used iTunes to burn the playlist to two DVDs... then I imported the songs over on my MacBook.
It took about an hour to do all the burning/importing... but now I have all the songs that I want. =)

  • Exporting only part of an iTunes library

My disk is full. I need to get my iTunes library off of it. Can I only export part of the library, say just the videos or music files, or do I have to export the whole thing?
Is it possible to export it to a network disk so that it will play over the wifi network?
    Thanks,
    Ira

  • In the itunes library, a single album appears to be split into two separate parts, how do i combine them?

my itunes library has several albums that are split into two parts. one contains half of the album's songs and the other the other half. how do i combine these so the album only appears once in it's entirety?

  • How do I move only part of my itunes library to an external hard drive?

I have all my music and movies in the itunes library. I am wanting to move the movies to an external hard drive to save space, but keep the music in itunes on my computer.  I want to be able to play them all through my apple TV via home sharing. I have read a number of posts about consolidating the library and how to access files from an external hard drive, and how to move the entire library to another location, but don't know how to move part of the library.

It is possible but it is not standard configuration for iTunes. You will need to learn details of how iTunes operates in order to stay on top of it and not be back here in a month with a messed up library, or in a year or two when you discover it is a real nuisance when it comes to transferring your content to a new drive.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-featur es-of-itunes-9/ - "To perform a consolidate operation on selected tracks only, simply highlight the tracks you would like the consolidate, right-click and choose 'Consolidate'. iTunes will prompt you to confirm that you want to copy these tracks into your iTunes Media folder."  You will, of course, need to temporarily re-designate your iTunes media folder location as part of doing this.
The above method is a possibility but I have not tested it because I still run iTunes 7.5
Another way would be to copy the files to the external drive.  Delete them from iTunes, then drag the copied files back to iTunes (re-adding them) while holding down the option key.  If you do have anything in a playlist it will have to be re-added to the playlist, and you will lose ratings and date added.

  • How do I import just PART of a song from a CD into iTunes Library?

I am trying to get just a little bit of one of my songs from my CD into iTunes Library so I can use it on a website. I do not want the entire song. Can this be done?

No, not as far as I know.
You can, once imported, change the 'Start Time:' and 'Stop Time:' (Get Info, Options tab) and convert it, using the converter of your choice.
The copy will have the length between start and stop times.
Beware of copyright issues before putting (parts of) songs on a website.
If you own the copyright, it's no problem of course.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using an old iPod as storage for part of my iTunes Library.

I have an old 4th Gen iPod (40gb) that needs a new battery, which I plan to have repaired. I know that i can use the iPod as a hard drive, however, as my iTunes Library has grown to a huge size (pushing 63Gb), it is taking up rather more of my MacBook Pro's Hard disk space, than I would like.
My question is this; Is there a way that I can store part of my iTunes music on the iPod and the rest on the Macbook Pro? Then, when i needed the full library, I would simply plug in my iPod/Hard drive. Is this possible? and also, would it be as straight forward as plugging in the iPod and launching iTunes?
    Hope you can advise me.
    Cheers

" I know that PCs don't recognise Mac stuff but, and correct me if I'm wrong, I remember something about Macs recognising PC stuff??"
An iPod formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party helper programs to overcome that, however Macs can read Windows formatted drives so you should be able to use your old iPod as a straightforward removable drive without any problem.
