Custom playlists

The content in my custom playlists keeps disappearing, usually after an iTunes update. Does anyone else have this problem?

Click a playlist and select 'Export Song List...' from the File menu.
Preferred file format is .xml (although .txt also seems to work well).
On the 'other' computer select 'Import...' from the File menu and navigate to the .xml file you created.
You have to do this procedure for every single playlist.
The playlists are in the 'iTunes Library' file (more info about the library files here) and you cannot batch-export them.
You could also try to import the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file from 'host' to 'other'. This will normally reveal all playlists from the 'host'.
Hope this helps.

My drive failed on my iMac and I had to get a new drive but now my iTunes music is gone including all the CD's I added to iTunes, and all of my custom Playlists. All of that stuff is still on my iPhone 4, but how do I get it all onto my iMac again? I have CD's on my phone that i no longer have the physical copies of so i can't just re-download them all, plus it would take forever! I just want to know if there is a way to get all of what is still on my phone, back over to my iMac with it's new drive and restore my full iTunes library to the iMac with playlists, CD downloaded music, and my iTunes bought stuff, so i can go back to synching the 2 devices without losing everything that's on my phone that used to be on both devices?

  • No Sound on Custom Playlist iPhoto

    OS X-10-6-8
    iPhoto '11
    iTunes 10-5-3 (3)
Custom Playlist does not work on my iPhoto'11.  I downloaded iTunes music for my slide show but it doesn't play with the slide show.
It plays in the various source playlists Themes/Music/Settings box with the time durations shown.  No problems with playing in iTunes.
However when dragging it down into Custom Playlist slideshow, the name-artist appears but the duration time shows "0.00" and no sound when hitting the play button (bottom right).
    Any thoughts.

The following has solved the problem for many of us:
In iTunes go File -> Library -> Organise Library -> Reorganise Library.
    Then quit and restart iPhoto.

  • HT1351 Why do my custom playlists created in my iPod disappear when I sync? They used to sync when they were called on-the-go.

Custom playlists created in the iPod used to be called 'on-the-go' and would sync to your PC.  Each time you created a new one it would be called on-the-go1, on-the-go2, etc.  Sometime ago there was a software update that allowed you to name them in the iPod, only now they don't sync to the PC.  They simply disappear.  It's as if there is only a one-way sync, from the PC to the iPod because if I create one on in the PC, it will sync to the iPod.  Is there a setting that will allow 2-way syncing?  I can't find one.  This used to work.

What version of iOS are you running on your iPod Touch currently? I assume you have your iPod set up to automatically sync with your iTunes library?

  • How do I gift a custom playlist?

I'm ticked off.  I wanted to give my sister a custom playlist of songs for her birthday. I followed the instructions for that on the iTunes Store home page, but apparently the instructions are not up to date with the latest version of the software.
After purchasing all the songs in the playlist, I was ready to gift the whole playlist, but no arrow appeasrs to the right of the name of the playlist in the sources panel, as it says in the instructions. Any help?

"  Am I to understand from this error message that I am not allowed to gift songs that I have ripped from CD?"
Yes. You can only gift items in your library that have been purchased from the iTunes store.
But that is not what the error message is telling you.
If you purchased an album and it contains items that cannot be purchased individually (you only get them when you purchase the entire album), you cannot gift those items separately. You must gift the entire album.

  • Had to reinstall iTunes after bad virus and now when I drag and drop song into custom playlist it won't added.  No green   appears, instead just the circle with slash.  What's going on?  a fix? Michael

I had to reformat after a bad virus and reinstall iTunes.  Now when I try to drag and drop a song into a custom playlist, it won't add the song.  Instead of the green + that is supposed to appear, it just shows the circle with cross slash.  I created numerous playlist before and never ran into this problem.  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  Thanks 1ngiri

OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.

  • Genius playlist vs regular Customized playlist?

Can anyone explain difference between Genius playlist and customized playlist?  New to this setup and trying to figure what is what.....

This was not a simple task.  Got it handled.  Had to call Apple support. Apparently, the 160g only syncs the genius playlist.  You have to go in and "tell it" to sync the entire playlist as well as the genius playlists. There is also an option for only syscing certain songs. On itunes, there is two sections; one for the stuff that is synced on your ipod and another separate list for the stuff in your library!  This is exciting for me as I am not computer savvy to say the least.

  • How to Retain a Custom Playlist?

I have a custom playlist in iTunes and would like to burn this playlist to a CD. The playlist is not organized in iTunes by album, artist or song length. When I burn the CD, iTunes organizes the songs alphabetically. I don't want this. How do I retain the playlist order I have created?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Itunes 11 custom playlist title bar

I find this bar in a custom playlist, very space consuming, especially on a 13inch macbook pro. Is there any way of changing it to what its like in the music, movies, tv show etc tab
I know it sounds stupid, but it really makes me hate my customs playlist look

Isn't the first one displaying full track information and as such needs the longer lines?  You can probably select what is displayed (right click on a header), resize column width, and re-arrange the order so it takes up less room.

  • Problems with custom playlists in iPhoto09

I'm trying to add music with a custom playlist in iPhoto09.  The first song in the will not play all the way through.  It repeats.  The other songs will not play at all.  I've made other slideshows with custom playlists and they work fine.  I've checked and rechecked the settings and cannot find out what is wrong.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • IPhone shuffles custom playlist, but iPod touch does not.

I have an iPhone 3GS and an 2G iPod touch and I have a custom Smart Playlist full of music from the 1980’s and was wondering why my playlist on my iPod touch appears just as it does in iTunes but on my iPhone it is all shuffled?
However, I look at the playlist on the phone in iTunes and it appears as it does in the list and if there was a way during the sync I can tell iTunes or the phone to put the music in the order that it is on the playlist in iTunes?
Are there AppleScripts available for iTunes that do what I want or will I just have to deal with it? This is really frustrating because I want the phone to mirror the playlist as it is not shuffle it.
    What is going on?

If you have it set to sync (not manual), the +Recently Added+ playlist is one of the playlists you have set to sync (on the +Music tab+), and the missing podcasts are on the iPod, that's about all I can think of asking.
You may want to try doing a Restore to erase and initialize the iPod touch.

  • Custom playlists on Internet

I work for the CBS affiliate in Cleveland Ohio. We want to create and share our anchor's playlists on our website. What is the easiest way to do this?
Each person will have 10 tracks and we want to link to the song into iTunes for purchase.
We do have an iTunes affiliate account setup where we get a nickel each time someone uses our site as the portal for an iTunes purchase.
    Any thoughts?

Well, I can only give you a suggestion on what to check for--Windoz and I had a parting of ways back in about 1997.
MS Explorer, and most all Windoz products, work on OLE automation. If you are going to be able to do this with Java you have a couple of technologies to look at--Java Beans and Java Native Interface (JNI). JNI will require C programming to get the interface into the OS level.

  • Custom playlist folder showing songs that aren't in any of the playlists

I'm running iTunes 7 and I've created a folder to store all of the playlists that I use for DJing. Right now I've got about 90 - 100 playlists in that folder. When I highlight the folder to show all of the songs in that folder, I notice that it also shows songs that aren't in any of the playlists in that folder. The songs are in playlists in another folder (which isn't highlighted). I've gone through and checked to make sure that I didn't accidentally dump songs into a playlist that weren't supposed to be there. Any ideas on how to remedy this?

    Try this -
select one of the 'phantom' songs, and right-click. Look at the 'Show in playlist' item to see which playlists iTunes thinks the song is in. Maybe it will help you narrow down the search for a solution.
