Custom resize in iPhoto

I am trying to export a picture from iPhoto to my desktop changing it to a PNG and size 853x480 for use in Final Cut Express.
The photo is 3888x2592. In the custom resize area of the export I put in the custom dimensions, but the resulting photo on the desktop is 853x569. What am I doing wrong?

Am I right in thinking that after the export to desktop or a folder, you would then have to go back into iPhoto and revert the cropped photo's back to original.
If you do not want it cropped
Also I guess they would have to be cropped and exported one at a time.
Yes
I may have to do this resizing in Photoshop instead. I guess you would just export the photos to a folder on desktop and then import into Adobe do the resize and save back to a folder - all of this done outside of iPhoto.
Yes

  • Custom organization in iPhoto

    Hello.
I would like to implement some custom organization in iPhoto, but I am not quite sure how. In Windows, I had my pictures organized by Category. For instance, I had a folder called "Trips." Under Trips I would then have several folders for each trip I went on (Vacation A, Vacation B, Vacation C, etc). These would be organized by date.
I tried to implement a similar structure in iPhoto. What I did was create a new album, which I had hoped would be equivalent to my old folder called "Trips." However, I cannot seem to make subcategories (or folders) within this album to differentiate different trips I have been on. It seems like there would be a way and maybe I am missing something here?
    Thanks for any help!

in iPhoto You want folders and albums -- folders hold other folders and/or albums - so for example you can have a folder - vacations - and in it folders - US, Europe, Asia - and in the Europe folder an italy folder and france album, Germany album and in the Italy folder Tuscany, Umbria, Roma
This plus date access, keywords and ratings gives you great access to your photos

  • Resizing in iPhoto

Does it make any sense to anyone that Preview has a resizing tool but iPhoto does not?
    Preview/Tools/Adjust Size vs. iPhoto/File/Export/File Export/Size
There are posts and discussions all over the internet about how to resize in iPhoto. The Export thing is not intuitive and not easy to figure out.
Is Apple considering adding the Preview resize tool to iPhoto?

Finding out how to resize in iPhoto is not intuitive.
I don't think that even the most ardent fan would say that everything is more intuitive for everybody.
Resize should be an editing tool along side red-eye fix, etc.
Well no it shouldn't be. For a start your terminology is very imprecise. What do you mean by “resize”? Do you mean change the dimensions - length by breadth? The compression? Even the dpi?
Remember iPhoto is for managing and viewing your Photos. For these activities the dimensions, compression and dpi are all meaningless concepts. When you go to use the shot in another application, or to print it - that is, outside of iPhoto these concepts come in to play. Other than that you're just wasting disk space with multiple sizes of the same photo.

  • Custom resize the paper settings

I make cards and want to use different size papers to print but can't seem to custom resize the paper settings, causing my hair to fall out!!

Since I don't have this printer and can't get to the screens you are using, I thought I would pass on to you a couple of things that might work.  If not, I'll try again.
Solution one: Restart your computerFollow these steps to restart your computer.
Click Start, and then click Shut down .
Click Restart to restart the computer.
If you see a message that HP Software installation is running , restart the computer by pressing the power button on the computer to turn it off and then back on.
Solution two: Reset your printerFollow these steps to reset the printer. A power reset drains the power from the printer and returns it to the same settings after restarting. A power reset is a common troubleshooting step, and can be performed for conditions similar to an installation stall.
If the printer is turned off, press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
With the printer turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE:HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
NOTE:The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed
I hope this helps.  Please keep in touch so I can research more fixes if this doesn't work.

  • Where is the Basic photo resize in iPhoto feature

Recently, I found a feature that let me resize photos in Iphoto to various preset sizes and easially export them to my desktop or wherever.  The sizes were real baisc, 2 x3  4 x 6  8 x 10 etc but using the custom feature I could resize them perfectly for web photo requirements on Fiverr.
It seemed the setting was on the right margin in Iphoto to resize the images and I did about 8 of them.  ...Now I cannot find that feature-
Can anyone help me locate it in Iphoto?
    Many thanks-

In the Edit mode is the option to crop the photos to the various size ratios:

  • Custom cropping in iPhoto 08

with iphoto 06, I could select custom and designate a crop of 5.5 x 4.0 inches, which perfectly fits my photo cards that I make. with 08, it doesn't seem to accept fractions.
Any work around with this issue?
Also, is there a way to save a custom crop and have it show up in the menu?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    True -- BUT
Any work around with this issue?
    Yes - since the crop is really just a ratio you can enter 55 x 40 and achieve your results (or 550 x 400 -- or 55000 x 40000)
Also, is there a way to save a custom crop and have it show up in the menu?
I do not believe there is

  • Resizing w/ iPhoto

I have been trying to resize uploaded photos with iPhoto. However, I am unable to see any resizing buttons or functions. How do you normally resize your pics using iPhoto?
iMac (newest)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    iJ3r0M3
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The entire philoposphy of iPhoto is to leave your original pic untouched. SO if you want to resize a pic, for say, uploading to the internet, you do this on export: Select the pic and go File -> Export. In the resulting dialogue you have the opportunity to rename and resize the pic, and iPhoto will create a copy of the file on the desktop, incorporating your changes.

  • Resize in iPhoto? or not?

forget what I may do with it at some future date. Will iPhoto resize or not? If so how? I keep running into advice re: using some other program to do so. simply highlight a pic, get info, resize it intact from 2560x1920 to 640x480 I have attempted various ways but end up with a corner of the pic showing a curtain or some such and the overall pic isn't. will it or won't it? not for email, not for web, simply resize it, that's all.
    thanks

iPhoto will resize upon export. Go to File > Export > File Export, and a dialog box will allow you to choose a dimension to resize (iPhoto will constrain proportions). Export to your desktop, and if you want the resized version back in iPhoto you will have to re-Import, perhaps adding to the file name so you know it has been resized (and giving the new one a different name from the original. When you resize this way it may take trial and error to find how the pixel size relates to the size in Mb so you get the file size that you want.

  • Making a customable resizable JPanel, but it only works in certain L&F

    Hi,
I have created the following resizable JPanel (so that I can set a minimum size it can be dragged to).
However, I need it to work under the system L&F, which is XP, but it wont work.
The code is below. if you run it the first time, and try to resize the dialog to a small value, you will see it shrinks in size, to a certain point.
then if you comment out the 2 lines i specified, and run it again, it wont. Anyone have any ideas? is this a known bug?

okay... I see what the problem is.
    1) With those lines uncommented: The L&F is handling the window decorations. Because of this, it's basically a JWindow with custom painting and mouse handling. When you resize, it's constantly calling setSize, which constantly firing events, so your minimum sizing works as you expect.
    2) With those lines commented: The OS is handling the window decorations. Because of this, there are 2 caveats:
    a) There is a minimum width of the window of what looks like about 120-130 pixels. So you can't go any smaller then that for width. And for height, no smaller then the titlebar and lower border.
    b) It only fires the component events when the mouse is released, cuz that's how the undelying native windows deal with it... or at least with Java.
For #1 above, there's still a minimum size for the L&F decorated windows. But this is related to what content is showing in the titlebar. Which in the case of the decorations showing, is smaller then what your were defining as a minimum.
So, basically, it's not a bug. It's just the way it is. It's always been like this.

  • Uploading custom pages to iPhoto photo books

I am trying to upload a custom page with photos and text to my iPhoto photo book. I am a digital scrapbooker.  But I need to know the exact size with bleed to make sure that the text and photos appear the way I have designed. Is it possible to find out the size of the photo books with bleeds?
I am using version 9.5.1 of iPhoto.

I've not seen that in iPhoto '08 - iPhoto '09 does have a thumbnail bug like that that has not been fixed yet
Try clicking on the blank thumbnail and seeing what it shows in the main window
And remember the sure way to know what is going to print is to preview it according to this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference

  • Custom resizing images when printing in Elements 11

Hi friends .... I could use some help ... When I was using an older Photoshop version ...I could select "print with preview" and there I could adjust the size and proportion of the image to the paper size - I would see the paper in a preview box and could adjust the image by sliding the box at the corner points and size the image any way I wanted ... and could see the actual preview of how the image could fit on the paper .... in Elements 11 - even if I do a PDF and print in Preview- there's no way I can see to do that ... I only see options for set sizes- even under the custom sizing menu ... I'm using exactly the same printer that I used with Photoshop - so I'm assuming this is a limitation with Elements ... I don't even see the option in Elements printing to change the image percentage as I've been used to with any other page setup before .... Please give any advice - this is making printing exactly what I want pure guesswork and is very difficult for me ...there must be something I'm missing when I print with Elements 11 .... thanks for any help ...
    David

Oh yes it has Barbara.  David is right.  Have a look at Elements 5.  I got that free and would still be using it if I hadn't had to upgraded to Windows 7.  I've now had to buy Elements 11 because Elements 5 wouldn't load and Elements 11 does not have that fascility that David laments.  I used that printing option almost exclusively for printing cards and I bitterly regret not having it now.  I'm very disappointed with these printing options in Elements 11.  The problem is that Photoshop eminates from the one country in 180 that seems manacled to its imperial measurements that the rest of the world has to keep wading through. I expect that to acquire my favourite printing fascility I shall have to get the full verson.  I have seen it in screenshots, so I know that it is there.  It's all very well for Barbara to say resize before entering the print window but this is just trial and error and takes forever.  In the meantime I shall continue to spend ages working round this cumbersome resizing problem each time I print my cards.

  • Transferring a custom slideshow between iPhoto libraries

Is there a way to transfer a custom iPhoto slideshow from one iPhoto library to another. The only way I see is copying the whole library and then deleting everything except the slideshow itself. That is not only a very time consuming process, it doesn't allow to incorporate the slideshow into an exiting iPhoto library as well.
    Any tips welcome.

Is there a way to transfer a custom iPhoto slideshow from one iPhoto library to another.
The straight answer is, I'm afraid, no.
What you can do is export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie, but that won't be editable in the other iPhoto.
Other apps that have slideshow capability and iPhoto integration include PhotoToMovie and PhotoPresenter .
There are others, search on MacUpdate

  • Att: Apple Customer Service representatives - iPhoto order problem

    Hi,
I've had the following problem using the iPhoto book ordering system:
Last week, I decided to make a photo book in iPhoto and buy several copies of it to use as christmas gifts. I bought the most recent version of iPhoto from the App Store even though I had an earlier version installed, just to ensure reliability and the most up-to-date features. After this, I made my book and on wednesday evening, tried to order it several times, with iPhoto telling me my order couldn't be completed.
On thursday morning, I tried once again ordering the book, and this time, iPhoto tried to upload my book. In the end, iPhoto gave me a message worded something like "Your order could not be completed. Try again at another time". So I waited a bit and tried again, and I got the same error message.
Later in the morning, however, I was sent 2 order confirmations from the Apple Store, both for 5 books. I only need 5 in total, so I tried cancelling the last order, but the order website said that I could not cancel the order as it was being processed - this was only some 15 minutes after me receiving the order confirmation. I tried phoning Apple in Denmark, and their phone pointed me to the iPhoto website, which had no relevant information whatsoever. I tried finding information on the web and responding to the order email. No help here either, the email was bounced, and I could not find anybody else who had experienced this problem. I decided I would cancel the payment for the last order with my bank and return the 5 extra books.
In the days since thursday, the payment didn't show up in my bank statement, and thus, I was beginning to think that maybe my order confirmation email was an error on Apples part, and my order wasn't completed after all. However, the delivery man came to our house today, and my girlfriend signed for both packages (she didn't know why there was two packages). I will be keeping five of them, and you can have the last five books back - I will be cancelling the payment for those when it shows up in my bank statement. After all, I would have never ordered them if your system had worked and given me the correct message after the first order had gone through.
Please contact me by email in order to arrange the pickup of the surplus books.
    Kind regards,
    Christian

You could try contacting Apple through Express Lane. Click on Mac & Software > iLife > iPhoto. Good luck

  • Custom resize H.264 export crashes Quicktime

I'm trying to resize and compress a HD movie using H.264 to upload to Vimeo, a youtube like site. When I resize in Compressor (1920x1080 to 853x480) the resulting movie crashes Quicktime. It only works if I resize from a built-in option from the drop down menu, like 50% of original.
    Anyone have any insights?

The standard for H.264 files is the MP4 container.  Try not using QuickTime.
