Custom Tag Libraries

I know you can add the JML taglib too OJSP but is it possible to add our own taglib.
If it cant be done in this version does anyone know when the next version will be released.

  • Custom tag lib, tomcat server cant parse descripter file

    Hi there, I'm working on custom tag libraries, and I have created a simple tag which prints a string when it is called from a jsp file. And I have created a descriptor file for that perticular tag and also created a jsp file which is using the tab lib that I have created, I have placed all these files in their corresponding files, well the problem is when I'm trying to call that jsp file it says the server can't parse the tags.tld file, because <urn></urn> must be declared. And can anybody throw some light on this! it would be much of help from you side, regards, Raasi
    I have pasted all the files with the error message please have a look

    Hi,
    I have used the following dtd file for a simple tag you can use it by just replacing the tag properties
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
    <!DOCTYPE taglib
    PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD JSP Tag Library 1.2//EN"
    "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-jsptaglibrary_1_2.dtd">
    <taglib>
         <tlib-version>1.0</tlib-version>
         <jsp-version>1.2</jsp-version>
         <short-name>CooperatingTags</short-name>
         <description>
         </description>
         <tag>
              <name>first</name>
              <tag-class>com.opera.tagclasses.FirstTag</tag-class>
              <body-content>EMPTY</body-content>
              <attribute>
                   <name>sessionID</name>
                   <required>false</required>
                   <rtexprvalue>true</rtexprvalue>
              </attribute>
         </tag>
    </taglib>
    I guess tag urn is not required.
    Hope this helps

  • JSP Tag Libraries - Useful or not?

    Hello all,
    How popular are tag libraries? Are companies incorporating custom tag libraries? I just want to know if its worth learning in-depth.
    Thnx

    I know that taglibs can be very useful in at least two situations:
    1) For common HTML folk (ie: webpage designers, not software developers) taglibs can offer impressive functionality in comprehensive, simple tags. Hiding Java complexity from these people is a good thing...
    2) For sophisticated JSP pages it can be very useful to encapsulate repetitive and code-intensive functionality in tags as well, because this makes maintenance of your pages simpler (thus cheaper, since you spend less time on it).

  • Help with JSP Tag Libraries

    Could someone please help me with the setup process of tag libraries? I've looked on the Internet and found some instructions, but they are all for Tomcat. I'm using Jserv, and I'm not sure how to setup my environment to work with custom/tag libraries. Could someone help me by giving me some instructions or sending me to an article that could help me?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi pvongboupha
    The best source for getting to know how to set up tag libraries is the JSP specification. You can download this from :
    http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/download.html
    See the chapter on Tag libraries. Any J2EE compliant server will conform to these rules.
    You can also see a chapter from Core Servlets & JSP by Marty Hall. This chapter is on Tag Libraries
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/Books/javaserverpages/cservletsjsp/
    Keep me posted on your progress.

  • Custom Tag using object as an attribute.

    I have read up on trying to pass an object as an attribute to a custom tag.
    Is it true that the only way to do this is to put the object, using a "key name" in the pageContext
    Then in the custom tag, set an attribute equal to the "Key Name"
    Then in the TagHandler, to do a lookup using the "Key Name"
    We can not just past objects into the attribute?
    And what is this about using EL or JSP2.0
    sorry sort of new to the whole game.

    Certainly you can pass objects to tags.
    However you need to use a runtime expression to do that.
    such as <%= expr %> or (with JSP2.0) ${expr}
    If you look at the JSTL library, it uses the EL and passes in objects all the time. However the EL actually accesses the page/request etc attributes as its variable space, so you are still technically using attributes.
    Is it true that the only way to do this is to put the object, using a "key name" in the pageContext
    then in the custom tag, set an attribute equal to the "Key Name"
    then in the TagHandler, to do a lookup using the "Key Name"That is one way of doing it. The struts libraries use this method extensively. It is more suited to JSP1.2.
    Sometimes it is easier/neater just to put the value into a scoped attribute, and pass in the name of that attribute. That way you don't need to worrry about the type of the attribute at all in your JSP.
    Hope this helps some,

  • Exception Handling with Custom Tags/Exceptions

    Hello all --
              I'm looking for some guidance in handling Custom errors in my app. I can't
              seem to find the message string of my custom exception when trying to call
              my JSP Error page. I'm consistently getting:
              javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException: runtime failure in custom tag
              'CalendarHandler' .
              I am using custom JSP tag libraries to process logic on my EJBs. When I
              reach an error in business logic I raise a custom exception and propogate
              this back up to doStartTag:
              public int doStartTag() throws JspException {
              CalendarProcessor cp = new CalendarProcessor();
              try {
              String eventAction = getEventID();
              // pageContext contains information for the JSP;
              // Initialize the page with the current context and session
              cp.init(pageContext.getServletContext(), pageContext.getSession());
              HttpServletRequest req = (HttpServletRequest)pageContext.getRequest();
              cp.processRequest(req, eventAction );
              } catch (CalendarException ce) {
              throw new JspException(ce.getMessage());
              return SKIP_BODY;
              Then, in my JSP, I am enclosing the TagHandler in a try...catch block; I
              can't catch CalendarException because it is Throwable and conflicts with
              JspException.
              <% try { %>
              <gtc:CalendarHandler eventID="updatecal"/>
              <% } catch (Exception e) {
              throw e instanceof JspException ? (JspException) e : new
              JspTagException(e.getMessage());
              %>
              many thanks in advance!

  • How to add a reference to help for a custom tag

    Hello,
    I would like to add an icon (question mark icon) to my custom tag (in tag libraries view). Then, when I press this icon I would like to see some .html page with description of a tag as it is done for a struts tags.
    Is it possible?
    If yes please tell me how to do it.
    Thanks,
    Damian

    There are a variety of customization options available for BEA Workshop. Through metadata you can define renderings for custom tags, tag appearance in the tag libraries view, customize the tag editors, and much more.
    Information about customization can be found at the following link: http://workshopstudio.bea.com/docs/tlei.htm
    Adding custom tag documention to the Tag Libraries view is not currently a configuration option but would be a useful addition. I will file an enchancement request for this functionality.

  • JSP programming with Tag Libraries like Struts.

    Hi friends,
    I've been programming in JSP, JavaBeans for the last 1 year. However, with the current popularity of Tag Libraries & concepts like MVC, Struts am thinking of using these in JSPs. Even though I am not totally convinced about the real advantages like "No Java code" in JSP pages bcoz normally anyway most of the Java Code is done in the Javabean where my Business Logic is present.
    If any of you have previously worked on Tag Libraries please would you advice me whether it's worth it and which books & material would be best for these.
    Thanking you in advacnce.
    Cheers
    Sanjiv

    Based on my experience with using JSP tags, I would definitely strongly recommend them. If nothing else, application/project specific custom tags go a long way in facilitating development-time productivity and code maintenance.
    And ofcourse, with JSP tags you get the added advantage of the JSP container maintaining pools of instantiated tag objects so even the runtime performance is helped.
    The book Web Development with Java Server Pages by Duane K. Fields, Mark A. Kolb from Manning Publications has helped me a lot about JSP tags.
    Sun's tutorial http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/doc/JSPTags.html is also good.

  • Custom tag Manipulation

    All:
    I have created a custom tag for my users. When this custom
    tag is used, I
    would like the inner text of the tag to be a specific color
    when viewing in
    Design Mode. (as an example, the way an H1 tag works).
    I have tried using Design-Time CSS, but this does not work
    for me. Since
    these HTML files that are being edited are independant files
    and not part of
    a website.
    Is there anyway to have a default CSS file associated with
    the Dreamweaver
    application that is included everytime a file is opened? I
    would like to
    have no user action invovled with this file.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Kev

    I created my custom tag as follows (Most files that are
    updated are located
    in :../Dreamweaver/Configuration/Tag Libraries/)
    1. Added the mytag.htm and mytag.vtm files inside the
    ..TagLibraries/HTML/
    folder. (So information about the tag will show up in the
    details of the Tag
    Library when inserting)
    2. Updated the TagLibraries.vtm ../TagLibraries/ to include
    my new custom
    tag. (So the tag will show up in the Tag Libraries when
    inserting the tag)
    3. Added my custom tag to html_all.vtv in
    ..TagLibraries/Validator/ (This
    will allow my tag to pass through validation)
    That should pretty much get you started to create your own
    tag and
    validation to accept your tag. Keep in mind that this is not
    valid HTML and
    this tag is only for our purposes. When i say that it passes
    validation, i
    only mean that in the validation panel an error will not be
    thrown because
    this tag exists.
    Anyone still have any ideas on how to apply a generic CSS
    file to any file
    that is opened in Dreamweaver? Once again, i prefer to have
    no user
    interaction.
    Thanks
    Kev

  • Why doesn't my custom tag work?

    First, my backend database is MS Access. Nothing I can do about that, unfortunately.
    I have defined three custom tags (no body, no attributes) to display report information from my project tracking/metrics Access database:
    <prefix:showProjectInfo />
    <prefix:showProjectTeam />
    <prefix:showProjectHistory />
    In my JSP, the first tag I use, <prefix:showProjectInfo />, works perfectly. However, <prefix:showProjectTeam /> gives no output.
    First, here is the tld file that defines the tags (report.tld):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

    It doesnt seem to matter if the code is in doStartTag(), doEndTag(), orr any of the other functions.
    I also put, as the first item in the function:
    System.out.println("TEST");Nothing.
    Just as an aside, here is the code for the <prefix:showProjectInfo />. Maybe I made a mistake in it? I closed the resultset and connection...

  • Is possible to write a custom tag inside another custom tag ??

    Hi
    Im trying to reduce the time needed to code mi app presentation layer, it uses some custom tags with certain configuration, i would like to know if its possible to do something like this inside my custom tag doAfterBody().
    public int doAfterBody() throws JspException {
              JspWriter writer=bodyContent.getEnclosingWriter();
              try {
                   writer.print("<customTag:myAnotherTag someEspecificConfigurationParams="someEspecificValues"/>");
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   pageContext.getServletContext().log("Error: "+e.getMessage());
              }return SKIP_BODY;
         }The goal is to simplify the jsp code because the configuration params for the custom tags (css styles and similar) are allways the same.
    That dont work, it simply prints <customTag:myAnotherTag/> in screen but the tag is not evaluated, ive tried too something like
    public int doAfterBody() throws JspException {
              if (repeat) {
                   JspWriter writer = bodyContent.getEnclosingWriter();
                   try {
                        writer.print("<customTag:myAnotherTag/>");
                   } catch (IOException e) {
                        pageContext.getServletContext().log("Error: " + e.getMessage());
                   repeat = false;
                   return EVAL_BODY_AGAIN;
              return SKIP_BODY;
         }And it doesnt worked worked. Maybe using the taghandler classes and calls to the doAfterBody could make it work, but when you need to nest tags it could be a little hell of coupling calls, so before doing it i would like to know if what i want is possible. After reading some books i tought it could work because the stack of out objects, but i cant make it work.
    Another idea is to inherit from tagHandler and override some properties in the tags, but i dont like the idea to much.
    So, can anyone help me??
    Thanks.

    You cannot do that and I have listed out the reason and a possible solution in this post http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=697243 from yesterday.
    cheers,

  • How to prepare Custom tag with scope as  session  like Struts tag

    Hi
    All Struts tags having the feature of Automatic Scoping.
    Automatic Scoping: Struts tags check all contexts (namely page, request, session, application) and use the first instance found. Developers do not have to explicitly "retrieve" objects from a particular scope. They may, however, specify a context.
    same as like struts tag I want to preapre 'select custom tag'.which will retrieve its previous selected value automatically and display.And one important thing is I dont want to set the selected value of custom tag in session expicitly.I mean the custom tag it self should take care to set the session vale and retrieve the sesion value and display like Struts tag . For struts select tag we wont set any selected value in session though it will retrieve the previous value and display when scope of form = session

  • Make new custom tag in A2

    Good evening,
    I'm trying to add a custom tag to an image in Aperture 2.0. I've looked all over the internet and find no examples what so ever of AS and Aperture 2.0.
    I have a few guesses that produce one of two different errors - but no idea how to actually make this work. Any ideas ?
    tell application "Aperture"
    copy selection to theSel
    repeat with curImg in theSel
    class of curImg
    --image version
    -- make new custom tag at curImg with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    -- set aNewTag to make new custom tag with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    -- Aperture got an error: Can’t make or move that element into that container.
    -- make new custom tag at end of curImg with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    -- make new custom tag at end of (curImg) with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    -- make new custom tag at end of custom tags of curImg with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    -- make new custom tag at end of curImg's custom tags with properties {name:"NewTag", value:"New Tag's Value"}
    --Aperture got an error: Can’t make application "Aperture" into type specifier.
    end repeat
    end tell

    If I recall, it was done because how tags were to be handled in 1.2 was very different from 1.1 and it was felt that developers shouldn't rely on implementation specific classes (unless they were SPI) for several other reasons (application portability being the big one here).
    If it's felt that this was the wrong decision, please feel free to log an issue [1] against the RI (to date, no one has).
    As to the 'borked' dependency URLs, please log an issue [1] if you find these. We have nightly builds going that work from a clean workspace and checking today's result, it seems ok.
