Custom TCP/IP Settings for different network connections

I have about 4-5 different networks I hop onto all the time.
The problem is my brother will NOT use Auto-configure using DHCP. So, I have to get the settings and put them in everytime, with his static IP, gateway, DNS and the such. Is there a way to save them to that specific connection and whenever my macbook pro sees HIS network will use HIS settings? I mean, it would make sense to be able to custom fit a connection just to his connection.
So, that when I am on his network I wouldn't have to retype/input his settings because the SSID tells the computer that I am on his network and to use his settings. When I am on different networks it would use the settings appropriate to that network.
I don't know if that made any sense, respond back if it didn't and I will try to clarify better.

Add a "Location" for that network configuration.
System Preferences > Network > Location > Edit Locations
Then when you want to switch to that network, click on the Apple > Locations and select the Location you set up.
I have a few locations set up this way and it works well.

  • Firewall: can you have different settings for different network adapters?

I've got a mac mini that is visible on the open internet via a SDSL line / fixed IP. I'd like to lock down the connection as much as possible - in particular limit the ports to just those needed by the servers that sit on that machine. But I use VNC to control the machine on a day-to-day basis (it runs without monitor or keyboard). I connect the VNC client via our internal Wireless network - but to open the port for the VNC system I have to open the port for both wireless and wired adapters.
Is there any way I can set the OS X firewall to only open the VNC ports on the wireless adapter?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    G.

i don think you can bind a rule to an adapter but you could fairly easily say i only want adress like 192.168.. to be able to connect to VNC or something like that and that way you can limit it to machines on the local subnet - you could also use an "or" statement to add a couple remotoe addresses if you need to.

  • TCP/IP settings for airport card

ok, first off...please take it easy on me...i'm a windows guy but am close to purchasing a mac for my girlfriend and also have an iPhone so please understand that i love macs, just don't know too much about them..yet
i have a need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID (Peanut Gang). the problem is due to the fact that when macs connect to a linksys WRE54G wireless repeater, they do not obtain the TCP/IP info. you can go into system prefs -> network and renew the lease and it obtains the info but i've been asked to "automate" this process.
ok, i'm not sure if it's possible but when i saw the "automator" section here i thought i would ask. i know how i could do it through scripting on a windows machine but i digress, ha!
    thanks

You may want to ask this over in the "Networking" group.
Also clarify whether you're having these issues with a mac you have, or just what.
Might want to specify what kind of mac is having this problem, too.
And be ready to explain just what you're asking when you say:"need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID"
There are some pretty good blokes in that discussion group.
    welcome

  • Missing TCP/IP settings for iPhone tethering (Bluetooth and USB)

Is it just me or Apple has completely disabled the TCP/IP settings for BT and USB connections for iPhone tethering (and possibly any other mobile devices)?
I can now only set the IP addresses and DNS server. No Proxies or WINS settings tabs.
I have also noticed that if you setup a USB tethering connection in Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard, the settings are still available, but NOT if you make a clean install of Snow Leopard and create a new iPhone USB tethering connection.
I always use a SOCKS5 when I'm using my tethering connection for security and better/faster connection with my manual proxy server setup. I find the new "options" in SL very limited, not only for my usage.

I got this to work again (in fact, I'm tethered right now
Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Upgraded to iTunes 9
    2) Upgraded iPhone to OS 3.1
    3) Removed device from Bluetooth Devices list on my MBP
    4) Removed Bluetooth PAN from Network preferences
    5) Restarted iPhone and MBP
    6) Set-up iPhone as a Bluetooth Device on MBP
    7) Enabled tethering on iPhone
    8) Connected to iPhone network via the Bluetooth icon on my MBP menu bar
    9) Verified that the blue "Internet Tethering" bar was on the iPhone
    10) Manually added Bluetooth PAN to my MBP network preferences (connect show as yellow, "IP cannot be assigned" message)
    11) Opened the Advanced pane and clicked the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
    12) IP was assigned!
I'm not sure if the first two steps contributed to the solution or not, but these are the steps that worked for me.
    Good luck to you all...

  • Proxy settings for different providers

Hi is there a website where i can find all the proxy settings and gprs settings for each network provider in the UK and in europe?
i am having trouble conecting to a server using a socket connection on some different network providers. it works on a T mobile contract SIM but on a 02 pay as u go and on a vodaphone contract i doesnt seem to work. i doubt its my code has it works on the T mobile SIM so i was wondering if i have to connect to the server using some sort or proxy for various network providers.
Or could it be that the network provider is blocking the port? is there a way to find out if the ports blocked?

    any suggestions? cheers

  • Where can I read the proxy settings Firefox chose, when configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network"?

I would like to set my system network proxy settings to those, Firefox chose. Firefox is configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" and this works fine. How can I read out the settings Firefox chose, so I can adapt these system?

    Hello Richard,
Download MozBackup and make a backup of your bookmarks and passwords. Uninstall firefox and remove ALL folders with the name "Firefox".
Install Firefox and restore your bookmarks and passwords. Now you should have a fresh install so you have to make all settings again.

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off, slow or hanging loads, etc.
I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!

  • Different sync settings for different podcasts?

Here's a dilemma: From what I can figure so far, if you choose a Sync option (from the Podcast tab for your iPod when it's connected to iTunes), that option will apply to ALL of the podcasts you are sync-ing to your iPod - whether that's one, several, or all your podcasts. Well, what if you want different sync instructions for different podcasts?
For example, is there a way to have iTunes do the following, all at once, on the same iPod:
Sync only the "1 most recent" episode from Podcasts A, B, and C,
    ...AND...
Sync "all" episodes from Podcast D.
Because, seems to me, to keep all of the episodes of show D on iPod, you have to either have every episode of shows A, B and C loaded (which you don't want), or else have ONLY show D load (with not even the latest episodes from shows A B and C, which you WOULD like to have).
Would this require setting up a Smart Playlist for each show, or am I overlooking some other (obvious?) way of achieving separate sync instructions? Anxious for your insights.

    josh,
i came on here looking for the same answer...this is probably the single most lame setting (or lack thereof) in itunes...I love apple and i'm a mac enthusiast who has converted 2 friends in the past 3 months, and i think they've done this for simplicity's sake, but it drives me up a wall to have a universal "keep" setting. The "Do Not Delete" is not enough, i'd love to have different keep settings for my podcasts.

  • Different rich text/plain text settings for different accounts?

I use Mail for both my work email (MS Exchange) and my personal email (webmail/IMAP). Many of my coworkers use Outlook's rich text formatting options, so I need to have my work emails go out as rich text. However I'd like to have my personal emails go out as plain text.
I can set Mail to create new messages in plain text, but to reply in the same format of the original message. That takes care of everything EXCEPT when I compose a new message using my work address... in that case it goes out as plain text, and my coworkers complain that they can't use formatting, because their copies of Outlook are in turn configured to reply in the same format as the original message.
So ideally what I'd like is to have two different formatting settings for my two different accounts. Anyone know how this might be done? Any plugins, etc., that might accomplish this?

Since you are running Jaguar, Jaguar and Panther Mail do not support composing in HTML and this includes when forwarding a message received that was composed in HTML.
Since Jaguar and Panther Mail do not support composing or forwarding HTML, you can't embed images or photos in the message body anyway.
RTF with Tiger Mail is really HTML and although Tiger Mail does not include an HTML composer/editor, you can copy/paste HTML format from a web page and forward HTML received.
Images/photos and single page PDF attachments are revealed as inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default which cannot be turned off. This applies to received and sent messages which is not the same as being embedded. Embedded requires HTML and an embedded attachment is not a true attachment. All Mail.app versions render HTML received but you cannot attach a photo or image as embedded with Jaguar or Panther Mail so it doesn't matter if you use RTF or Plain Text in regards to photo/image or single page PDF attachments which appear as inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default regardless.
When you use Plain Text for message composition, the receiving mail client renders the text in whatever font the reader chooses.
IMO, everyone should use Plain Text for message composition. Messages would be boring to some but the majority if not all problems experienced with email would be eliminated if HTML was banned from message composition.

  • I have lost the correct proxy settings for the ethernet connection using Safari.  How do I get back to the original ethernet proxy settings?

I changed the ethernet proxy settings for Safari on my Mac Pro, when I was in a particular place that required extra security.  Now I cannot get the ethernet connection to work when back home.  The wireless connection works fine.  What are the original ethernet proxy settings.  How do I make the changes?
    Thanks

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click Change Settings next to Proxies. Select Automatically from the Configure pop up menu.
You may also have to select the Proxies tab. If any of the boxes are selected, deselect then click OK.

  • Different settings for different projects

    Hi,
I'm wondering why it is that Final Cut Pro cannot keep different AV setups and scratch disks for different projects. I am working with several different projects on my computer. Some in PAL, some in NTSC, some capturing from Betacam, others from DV, and all having different capture settings, including different scratch disks.
Every time I open a different project, I have to reset every one of these things...you'd think it was an incredibly basic thing to have these things "remembered" by project, so that you didn't have to reconfigure everything every time you switched (even with making an Easy Setup it's a pain). Or maybe it IS incredibly basic and I'm just missing something?
Thanks in advance for shedding light on this subject!

Thanks for the response...that is a good suggestion, I might try that if it turns out to be quicker to switch user than to switch settings each time.... I'll have to think through the implications, like permissions and such, to make sure I don't dig the hole deeper. But I like the idea because I do need to digitize to different drives as they get disconnected from my system and travel to different places, heheh...
This is something I've hated about FCP for years and years...today I was thinking about it and thought, it can't be, it's just such a basic thing, available in so many applications...I must be wrong and there must be a way to do it that I don't know about! I mean, for me it's enough to want to take the Pro off the end of Final Cut Pro. For people who use this tool in the industry I'd say it's almost a must-have. I mean, you can work without it, but it IS a big pain!
In any case, thanks for your help!

  • Freeware utilities for keeping network connection alive?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for a freeware utility that can keep the network connection alive on my 2010 mac mini.
Already have sleep, screen saver, and password lock turned off.  Also using static IP.
When it sits for a while I can no longer ping it from my PC workstation or use iTunes, VNC etc from my phone.
When I open up the mac, which I am using as HTPC, it will connect right away to Google etc using Safari yet it has dropped the share connection to my PC.
    Thanks!  Sean

  • I new to java but how do you load different settings for different browers?

Let's say i want the page to be font size 6 on FF but size 8 on IE. I know there is a code like "if firefox" but i'm not sure how to set it up.

I agree with the previous posts. I think it would be better to learn the fundamentals rather than spend time tweeking a web page for different browsers.
A java web site is made up of several technologies in addition to java such as javascript, xhml, sql, tomcat, etc, etc in addition to java specialties such as JSP and Servlets that you should learn before tweeking a web page. I suggest reading whole books on these topics such as starting with 'Thinking in Java' (I wonder if I can get a commission from the authors for recommending their book so often in these posts?)

  • Is it possible to have different settings for different podcasts?

I know that you can change the setting for podcasts on iTunes - things like how often they're checked for new episodes and whether they're all kept or deleted after listening.
But some podcasts are more timely, like news programs, and I would like to delete those when they get old. Others are "keepers" and I would like to keep them indefinitely. I know I can go back and manually delete individual episodes, but that's kind of a pain.
So is it possible to change the settings for individual podcasts?
    Thanks.

Thanks. There is an option for allowing or not allowing auto-delete, which looks like it may be what I want. I'm giving it a try.
