Custom TOC

I am trying to create a custom TOC in Captivate.  I don't want to use the built in one with captivate.  We are looking to have the menu slide up from the bottom, and display checkmark and other things as they complete stuff.  The only problem I am hitting (and a big one) is that I cannot have multiple named items on screens.  And of course on the master I cannot name it.  So I have no options of calling the menu from actions, unless I create a seperate name on each slide and have to code each one.
Any ideas?  thanks in advanced.

  • Assign custom TOC icons

I am working with RoboHelp 8. In RoboHelp 6, I was able to assign an icon to a book or page in the TOC. I'm trying to do it in RoboHelp 8 (according to the steps below from RH's help), but I don't have the "Image" field (step 2) to select an image.
I will try and attach a screen capture so you can see what I'm referring to, but last time I tried, the image didn't get through to the forum.
    Thanks,
    Debbie
Assign custom TOC icons (HTML Help)
In the Table Of Contents pod, right-click a book or page. Select Properties.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Image, Auto indicates that the book or page uses the standard icon.
From the pop-up menu, select an icon.
You can assign other icons to books and pages after you add the bitmap file (BMP) to your project.
(Optional) Select Mark As New to display the standard icon with a red star. The star indicates to users that the TOC item contains new information.
    Click OK.
Version-control projects may have more options.
Note: The Table Of Contents pod displays all books and pages with the standard icons regardless of the selection you make at the Advanced tab. After you generate the project, you can view icons in the Contents pane.

That help topic relates to HTML Help (.CHM file) output only. Assuming you are outputting CHM files, what you need to do is set your default single source layout to Microsift HTML Help in your Single Source Layouts pod.

  • Custom TOC Skinning

Does anyone know where the fla or class file is for the TOC in the captivate 4 folder system. I am trying to create a custom TOC and wasn't sure if anyone has been able to track either of those items down.
    Thanks

I am still unable to find the .as file or class file that controls the look/feel and layout of the TOC. Does anyone know where this is located?

  • Custom TOC Image in WebHelp

    Hi Guys.
I'm using RH 8.  Is it possible to create a custom TOC image to use in WebHelp?  I'm assuming I have to create an entire new skin, huh?  Is there any simple way to get that started?
    Thanks.
    Chris

    Hi,
Check out the Project Set-up Pod, and then Skins. You can add new skins there. It's probably easiest to create a new skin from the galery and modify that to your liking. Simply double click the skin and the Skin editor opens.

  • Custom TOC button in Captivate 4?

    Hi all,
I'm using Captivate 4 with imported PowerPoints. I'd like to use the Captivate skin's built-in TOC without using the playbar (and its available TOC button). However, that leaves me with only the teensy little grey TOC tab/slider thingy in the upper left corner to open/close the TOC, which doesn't seem to be large or distinct enough to get my users' attention.
I'd like to add a larger custom TOC button that opens and closes the TOC overlay from the slide footer, but can't find anything to point my button at so as to make that happen. Any suggestions?
If this has been addressed already, apologies, I didn't find it.

Hello and welcome to the forum,
In Captivate 5 you can change this icon. For CP4 I believe someone created a widget, am looking for it later on and will be back when I find it.

  • Custom TOC and player controls

I would like to customize the entire player and TOC navigation for my captivate project.
For example, I would love to have my clients logo above the TOC and create a custom look and feel to the entire experience. Example I would model the design after: http://www.articulate.com/community/showcase/?page_id=96
Can you elaborate on the steps I need to take to create a custom look and feel to the navigation and player? Is there detailed documentation I can read on this subject? My friend can write the custom actionscript, I'm just not sure the general overview of the process. When I export the captivate files to Flash CS3, I do not see the TOC or player files?
    Thank you!

Unfortunately, I don't think you can customise the TOC much beyond the colour controls given in the navigation settings. However, you can access the Playbar FLA's (sources) in Captivate 4, they're located in the Captivate 4 directory under "FLA/Playback" I believe. (or something similar.)
It is important to note however, that this is rather limited in what you can do in terms of customising the playbar. You can make new buttons, give them a different look and feel and change colours, but beyond that, you can't really do much with their layout, as Captivate either wants them in a tiny little center aligned area, or stretched horizontally across the screen depending on what you choose in the 'skin' navigation settings.
I ended up writing some AS code that would override the button positions, and gave them custom X values to place them in different places on the screen. However it never really worked entirely too well, as I wanted a custom width playbar, and I couldn't get it looking right.
In the end I just decided to make my own playbar in Flash, and import it as a widget. This shouldn't be too hard for your friend if he has a reasonable amount of AS experience. Best place to start is to have a look at the perpetual buttons widget that is provided with Captivate 4. I essentially just built upon that one to add more buttons and functionality that comes from the captivate toolbar.
You can check out the variables you need here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/05/list_of_system_variables_in_cp.html
It will then just be a matter of making code to make the buttons do what you want by calling/assigning those variables. The hardest part is making a custom playbar, but you can choose to use the Captivate one for ease sake if you want to go that option as well.
    Hope that helps!

  • Custom TOC WITHIN the Project?

One glaring weakness (in my opinion) of Captivate is the inability to truly customize the TOC. What is included is flat-out ugly, and the customization options are quite limited.
So it hit me today to try this:
Use an Advanced Action, along with a simple shape button to toggle the show/hide of the TOC.
I created a quick example and it works great....problem is, Captivate won't allow a grouped object that is pasted onto a Master slide, or any grouped object (or any object) anywhere to retain it's reference name across slides.
Has anyone else tried this before? I was thinking the only other approach that might work would be to develop the TOC in Flash, export as an AS3 swf, and then import into the Master Slide, and then trigger the showing/hiding of that via a shape button in Captivate. But, although we can import SWF to a Master Slide, we can't give it a reference name and thus cannot manipulate it via an Advanced Action.
    Very frustrating....
Is everyone out there just sticking with either the stock TOC, or the not all that much better/different 3rd-party TOC widgets that are out there?
Any approaches I haven't thought of that you could recommend to solve this problem?

Sorry, Rod, to disagree with you. Did you try out that variable? It is working only with overlay TOC for me, not with separate TOC.
    Danielle, create a button, for Success action in the Properties panel for this button choose 'Execute Advanced Action'. Then open the Adv. actions dialog box with the small folder icon right to the Script-field. Create this action;
This action will not release the play head.
I talked about that kind of toggle buttons in a recent article on my blog (it was for shape buttons, but actions can also be created for default buttons of course): http://lilybiri.posterous.com/toggle-shape-buttons

  • Adding a button before the TOC button in a WebHelp Pro navigation bar

My client wnats to add a "Home " button to the left of the TOC button in the navigation bar. I can ad buttons to the right of the "standard buttons": TOC, Search, Print, and Glossary, but even if I go and edit the skn file and add the "Home" botton before the TOC one, it still displays to the right. Is there anything I am missing?
    Thanks.
Using RoboHelp 9 and Robohelp Server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I don't have RH Server, so this is a bit of a guess but I think one method will work.
Modify the toolbar order in whstart.js.
    1. In whstart.js, go to line 184 (RH10), it has the text else if (nMsgId == WH_MSG_TOOLBARORDER).
    2. Below the opening bracket add the following code:
    oMsg.oParam = "CUSTOM|toc|glo|idx|fts|blackblock|searchform|banner";
    return false;
    3. Open whskin_tbars.htm and go to the bottom of the file to find a few calls starting with addButton.
    4. Copyt the id of the button (customxxxx) and replace the text CUSTOM in whstart.js.
    Modify whskin_tbars.htm
    1. Open whskin_tbars.htm
    2. Go to the bottom of the file and find a few calls starting with addButton.
    3. Set the lines in the order you want the buttons to appear. (Don't forget the 'blankblock' button to push certain content to the right of the toolbar.
    4. Remove the call to the function ReSortToolbarButtons() from the file whskin_tbars.js.
If WebHelp does still resort the buttons, try adding return false; as the first code in the function ReSortToolbarButtons() in the file whtbar.js
    Hope this helps,

  • Importing a TOC from Word

Apologies as always if already mentioned, but could not find it...
I have a large PDF I produce regularly from multiple other PDFs. The large PDF has a 'custom' TOC that I keep in a Word document (i.e. I don't use the bookmarks created by Adobe). I'm looking for a way - if it exists - to 'import' the TOC from Word to populate Bookmarks in Acrobat. Doesn't have to be Word - Excel or even Notepad would be fine. Acrobat 8 Professional on a Wintel box running XP.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Nicky 1

Yes, you can automate getting the text into bookmarks. In your list document, I suggest creating and applying a custom style for your bookmark-text paragraphs.
Then create a PDF from your list document, but specify that PDFMaker create bookmarks for paras with the custom style. This results in a PDF with your bookmarks -- they don't link to the right location yet, but they do contain the correct text.
You can even create a multiple level structure of bookmarks if you use more than one custom style etc.
It's just like creating bookmarks in a normal document, but your list document doesn't have any content other than the "headings" you want to convert to bookmarks.

  • Custom Reports Configuration within OER

    OER 11.1.1.3
Oracle Enterprise Linux R5U4 32 bit
    Oracle BI Publisher 11gR1
We have managed to introduce some custom BI reports, but would like
to be able to add additional sections to the reports page on OER, It seems
that we can only add a single one. Creating additional ".toc" files do not
seem to be recognised by OER. The only ".toc" files recognised are the standard
ones and "custom.toc". Furthermore, the xml files that "custom.toc" refers to
only seem to support very limited capability compared to the other
    files (e.g. projecPortfolioProductivity.toc, etc...)
We really need to extend our custom reports significantly over and
above what appears to be available and utilise the full capability of
    BI Publisher

    multiple possibilities:
    - a transaction can point to a report (with standard selection screen 1000)
    - a transaction can also point to a module pool (with any screen from the module pool)
--> The CIC will jump to the transaction, and you'll be able to return to the CIC afterwards, but it will not show the transaction within the CIC (standard "call transaction and return"-statement).
It's probably possible to define your own screen and call that as a subscreen in a workplace, but I haven't done it yet.
    Grtz,
    Michael.

  • Is there a way to send the TOC tooltip on top of the Collapse icon in Captivate 5.5?

  • More than one Table of Contents

Does anyone know if RoboHelp now offers the ability to create
more than one table of contents for a help project?

Leon is right. The "workaround" we have used for years is to
create multiple TOC (projectname.hhc) or Index (.hhk) files and
archive them somewhere for safekeeping. Then use them to overwrite
the existing ones in the project. It works but it's really
inconvenient and you really have to pay attention to an archive
naming scheme because the filenames must be the same as the project
    name.
However, I just noticed that I forgot to report in my Adobe
RoboHelp 7 sneak peek wrap up an even more robust implementation.
BTW, here's the URL Peter mentioned
    http://tinyurl.com/2ldt7e
Not only will you have multiple TOC/Index and Glossary
definitions - you will also have the ability to add a "placeholder"
from one custom TOC to another. It's a reference that can be placed
anywhere in the hierarchy of the TOC. It works in a similar way
that the Merged TOC icon works now. Way cool and takes the TOC
(Index) to another level. They will also play nice with RoboSource
Control if you are using that.
    Thanx,

  • Cp6 - Something broke! A "lifesaver" best practice reminder!

First, I should point out a very important best practice of saving your projects often and save your Captivate projects as a new name each time.
e.g. project_01, project_02, etc. (or some other variation that makes sense to you)
    Case in point…
Just a while ago, my Captivate project became corrupted for unknown reasons. I last experienced this problem in Cp4 so this is a disappointing reminder that Cp6 may also be vulnerable to file corruption.
Everything seems fine. All the slides seem perfect but this particular project now fails on my two computers.
    The symptom:
Now, I can no longer run in preview mode (F4 or otherwise). When I select preview, the Captivate preview window hangs for a very long time (slide 1/37 – just a grey screen). If I attempt to click anywhere within the preview window, I will see “Preview (Not Responding)”
If I wait about 5 minutes, the preview will actually start, however, it is very unresponsive… so clicking the NEXT button (I don’t use the slidebar ** name?) requires nearly 5 minutes to view the next slide.
The only way out of this mess is to let Captivate crash.
This repeats when I restart with the same file. In other words, the project is toast.
While really, really, annoying... all is not lost! Because I change my project name with every save (I anticipated this unfortunately inevitable moment), I now going to open an older (by 1/2 h) project and continue.
    - Shawn

    Hello Rod,
I am unsure what you are disagreeing with? I fully understand the legacy of Captivate as I've been there every step. I am unsure why you brought that up.
I think you are misunderstanding or I have not explained this issue well enough.
This course was developed entirely in Cp6. I have not done a significant amount of testing throughout development... basically building new slides each day.
Anyhow, when I ran a rare test earlier today, I was shocked to notice the course was unresponsive; taking nearly five minutes before the first slide would show. Naturally I thought corruption. But through hiding slides and publishing older  saved project revisions, I noticed a disturbing trend that project responsiveness. For instance, clicking the navigation buttons went from instantaneous down to just over five seconds per click as test through the published versions.
Curiously, the following remain unaffected (responsive throughout all revisions):
    - Custom TOC button (a custom/advanced conditional action - if cpCmndTOCVisible = 0 or 1....)
    - Effects
Everything else has become quite unresponsive (or gradually more unresponsive through the revisions):
    - BACK/NEXT buttons,
    - HELP button (a Jump to Slide x action)
    - Timeline events within a slide
If this was a problem with preferences, I should not be able to solve the problem by publishing earlier versions or even hiding slides in the most recent revision. Additionally, I should not see this same issue on three different systems.
But because I am willing to try anything, I cleared out the preferences and restarted Captivate and believe me, I am really disappointed to report that it did not help.
Please understand, I am not necessarily blaming Captivate... as it could very well be something I have done that has simply made responsiveness worse as I added more slides. Figuring out what that is could be a huge challenge. :-(

  • Using a custom menu button on the slide to open and close TOC in Captivate 7

    HI
I have a custom menu button. When the user clicks I want to show TOC, ( I see there is a state to show TOC) but when the user clicks the same menu button again on that slide how can I hide the TOC. ie toggle between hide and show.

  • How can I add custom toolbar buttons to load different TOCs?

In my WebHelp output, I want to have custom buttons on the toolbar that when clicked load a specific TOC in the left navigation pane. For example, when the user clicks the PC button, the PC TOC loads in the left pane. When the user clicks the VM button, the VM TOC loads in the left pane. All of the help files are managed in one project and some files will appear in both TOCs.
I think this should be possible but not sure how to make it happen. Is there some JavaScript that I should add to the custom toolbar item to load the TOC on click? How do I specify the TOC that I want to show for each button?
BTW - I'm using RoboHelp 8 (8.0.2) to generate WebHelp output. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi there
If you were to upgrade to RoboHelp 9 it would simplify your issue. Version 9 offers a new feature called Dynamic User-Centric Content (DUCC) and provides a nifty little drop-down selector in the Navigation Mini-toolbar.
As you are on version 8 the only way I can fathom you would manage this is by generating two different outputs. Each output would use its respective TOC. The Toolbar button in each project could be configured to open the other project.
You might first decry having to manage two outputs and all the files. But if you pick apart DUCC and the way it is configured by Adobe, it works in much the same manner. It's just hidden from your initial view.
    Cheers... Rick
