Custom tranparent folder icons

Hi. I was wondering how I get folders to support custom transparent icons. I know how to copy an image to the clipboard and paste it to the destination icon it the Get Info window. What I want to do now is incorporate transparent pixels so I can make clean looking folders instead of square blocks with pictures in them.

While it is possible to do it "by hand" it is not especially easy. The easy way is to either find such icons online, ResExcellence is one source, or to use the shareware program Iconographer to build your own:
http://www.mscape.com/products/iconographer.html
http://www.resexcellence.com/
You can try Iconographer for free. If you like it the shareware is a mere $15.

    Hi,
I made a XML custom templates files with many templates for word. I also made a registry patch to make word parsing this xml. Everything works, but I would like to change the categroy folder icon. Is there a way to do so ?

    Hi,
Do you mean the folder displayed in the Available Templates pane under
CustomTemplates in Word? To my knowledge, we have no way to custom it.

  • Custom Folder Icons

Alright, 8330 Curve with Sprint, running 4.5
When I upgraded from 4.2, I wanted to get rid of the Voice Activated Dialing feature, as well as several other carrier-specific features that I didn't want to take up space.....so I went in and removed the associated files, using a tutorial widely available.  I did know when doing this, that I would lose the ability to create custom colored folder icons.  No biggie.
Especially no big deal, when I used the standard Sprint theme, which has some very nice looking folders for IM/Social Networks/Entertainment.
However, I recently changed themes just to the simple BB L theme, and of course, lost all of those icons.  I found a post taken from another page, which gave a tutorial, using BBFileScout to load custom folder icons into the BlackBerry.  However, I have a small problem.  I don't have a subdirectory for "Folders" where it should be - presumably due to the removal of the VAD.
    Any suggestions?

I don't think there is as the custom icon information is stored as a separate fork, which SMB has no knowledge of.
    A couple of possiblities are:
    1) Enabling SFM (Microsoft Services for Macintosh) on the windows server. You can have the share mapped via SMB and AFP.
    2) On the server use ExtremeZ-IP http://www.grouplogic.com/products/extreme/overview.cfm
    3) Maybe on the clients use DAVE http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html
I would recommend downloading the following Webcast, the first half gives a good overview of Mac's in a Windows environment:

  • Yosemite - custom folder icons

I made a set of custom folder icons in OS X many years ago. Those folder icons have stuck with me through many revs of OS X, from 10.4 onward - until Yosemite. Now all of my folders (and shortcuts to them) show a blank, generic icon. This happens both on my Mac Pro and my iMac, both of which now have Yosemite installed.
Where have my customs icons gone? Can I get them back without having to redo the artwork? Can I use my old custom icons in Yosemite?

  • Convert Windows folder.jpg into OS X custom folder icon

    Hello everyone,
after months reading numerous post on the Web trying to find a way to convert the Windows "folder.jpg" into an OS X custom folder icon, I've come up with a solution using only the shell. Some users proposed using the Automator, which caused me lots of trouble (Spotlight sometimes wouldn't find the folder, or would return a Privacy error, and so on). Therefore, my solution uses only a Shell script with dependencies on some external libraries (most of them allowing to manipulate images and icons).
    Here's the code on Pastebin.
I hope this will be as helpful for you as it was for me. It allowed me to apply the custom folder icons to thousands of folders, including the local Mac folders as well as the one on external storage (USB or LAN).

  • Kernel Panic/"broken folder" icon but boots in safe mode

    I'm totally puzzled.
When I boot the computer either from the HDD or my bootable back-up, i get the broken folder icon.
But i can boot just fine in safe mode from the HDD - in fact, that's how i'm typing this message right now.
I have turned off all login items.
I repaired permissions on disk utility.
What else can i do (short of my genius bar appointment tomorrow morning)?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
I assume restoring from my backup HDD won't work since I can't boot from it?

  • Lion OS Folder Icons and Settings Change

My new 8 core Mac Pro with Lion arrived August 29 to replace an older Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. FYI - Just before the new Mac Pro arrived, I checked and repaired any permissions issues via the Disk Utility. Once the new Mac arrived, it took four days to finally get things moved over from the main hard drive because of various problems. I held up the transfer from the other 3 drives and am glad that I did. After a bad optical drive was replaced, constant Finder problems have been occurring which appear to revolve around permission conflicts. In essence, the Mac OS on my Mac Pro appears to be schizophrenic and apparently, it is in need of a frontal lobotomy. In reviewing posts in this forum, I was surprised to learn that users have been reporting similiar issues ever since Lion was released. I was given the impression that my complaint about it was the first for the techs who have attempted to resolve the problem.
I do a large amount of photography using the HDR technique so it is important to arrange image icons in specific groupings and order within folders. We have all gotten used to having icons in the same place or configuration in folders each time we open them. This not only gives us a feeling of consistency but is a critical time save when dealing with images and other graphic files. Unfortunately, because of some overlooked programming issue, the Mac OS Lion is confused as to what permissions it should pay attention do. While working, icon arrangements are constantly changing causing many hours of additional work without let-up. There is also an issue that happens I would call Blinking for no better of a word to use. In certain folders, icons will dissappear then quickly show again. This can happen about every 10 - 14 seconds sometimes.
I have also noticed related problems with new software upgrades. They work fine at first, then all of a sudden, they do not. Simple slideshows exported to video using Lightroom now appear completely black. In Dreamweaver CS 5.5, I can connect to the ftp server but am not allowed to upload. I am stuck in limbo, not being able to migrate all my work over from the older computer because all folder icon layouts will be destroyed if I start working in them. It has also created licensing issues because now softwares are on two Mac Pros and a laptop. The latest tech support request is to either erase my new startup disk and installing softwares one at a time, or consider installing the more stable Snow Leopard. Has anyone figured out an answer? I have never had such a bad experience with an Apple product in over 20 years. I would highly recommend to professional graphic artists, photographers, or other visual professionals that rely on the consistency of icon views in folders to stay away from Mac OS Lion until the problems have been resolved. Hopefully Apple intends to correct this. It has already taken several months.

    What finally worked for me!
My internal Mac hard drive is my “filing cabinet” with all folders installed by Lion (Applications, Users, System, and Library) plus my personal folders and data in each visible when I click on and open the harddrive. My internal Mac hard drive icon is on my desktop. After a restart the file and folder icons inside most of the first level of my personal folders would shrink and rearrange themselves.
After an hour on the phone with Apple Tech Support andt rying a variety of approaches, we finally solved the problem of the shrinking and rearranged icons. (Thank you Manny!!!) This is what finally worked for me and my new MacbookPro 15-inch delivered with Lion already installed.
    BTW I use a mouse….
Right clicked on the internal hard drive icon on my desktop. (Note: “Out of the box “ when you startup with Lion the first time the Mac Hard Drive probably will not be visible on the desktop and you have to reveal it!)
In the dialogue box that opened I selected and clicked on “Get Info.”
A long window opened. We looked at Sharing & Permissions at the very bottom of the window. In the “You have custom access” window my log in name was not there. This was the culprit!!! But the box was grayed out.
At the lower right hand corner of the long window I clicked on the padlock to open it.
A dialogue box opened with my user name and asked for my Password. I entered my Password and clicked “OK.”
The grayed out area of the Sharing & Permissions box immediately darkened.
I clicked on the plus sign at the bottom left hand corner of the long window.
A window opened at the top of the long box. I highlighted my name on the right hand side and then clicked on the “Select” button.  My name then appeared in the Sharing & Permissions box at the bottom of the long window.
To the right of my name un "Privelege" I made sure that “Read & Write” was turned on (use the little arrows.)
Back to the lower left hand corner and clicked on the gear and when the box opened I clicked on “Apply to enclosed items.”
Back at the lower right hand corner of long window, clicked on the open padlock to close it and lock the settings.
In each folder using “Show View Options”dialogue window I resized all the shrunken icons, set the Arrange to by “Name,” anything else I wanted, clicked on “Use as defaults” closed the window and moved on. When I rebooted everything had stabilized!

  • Folder icon command line

    Hi,
setting a custom item for a folder is easy with the copy/paste method. But I would like to script it.
As far as I have seen, if a custom icon is set for a folder, inside that folder an Icon file is created and the data (the icon itself) is saved in the "resource fork" (0KB for the file in the terminal, but on a smb-server, the file is split into 2 files and the ._Icon file has some 100KB).
But just copying that Icon file over (from a folder, where it is set to the folder, where I want it to show up) with cp or ditto -rsrc doesn't help. The Icon for the folder doesn't change.
Do you know how to change the folder icon in a script (be it bash or Apple script)?
What would be the commands to set a custom icon for a folder?
    thanks, kind regards, Herlind

    Hello Herlind,
I think you need not only to copy the 'Icon\r' file to the destination folder but also to set the custom icon flag of destination folder.
Try something like this. It uses SetFile command of Developer Tools.
    --SCRIPT (not tested)
set src to POSIX path of (choose folder with prompt "Choose source folder.")
set dst to POSIX path of (choose folder with prompt "Choose target folder.")
    copyCustomIcon(src, dst)
    on copyCustomIcon(src, dst)
string src, dst : POSIX path of source and destination folders
set srcicon_ to quoted form of (src & "Icon" & return)
set dst_ to quoted form of dst
set sh1 to "ditto --rsrc --extattr " & srcicon_ & " " & dst_ -- copy icon file to dst
    set sh2 to "/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a C " & dst_ -- set custom icon flag of dst
    do shell script (sh1 & " && " & sh2)
    end copyCustomIcon
    --END OF SCRIPT
    cf.

  • Looking for the Mac OS 9 iDisk Public Folder icon

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm creating an icon set of Mac OS 9 icons for OS X. I've been able to locate the regular iDisk icon, as it's stored in the Mac OS 9 "System" file. But, what I can't seem to locate is the iDisk Public folder icon. I found a pic of what it looks via Google Images:
    http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/iDiskPublicFolder.png
If anyone could help me out, that'd be awesome

    Hi, Alex -
If you are accessing iDisk while booted to OS 9, you are probably using the utility Goliath to do so.
The icon you reference looks much like those in the set used by Goliath, which can be found in the icl8 resource in the Goltiath program.
Tip - in OS 9, when you copy-paste an icon to a folder to give the folder a custom icon, an invisible file named "icon" is created and placed in the folder. This invisible file contains the "icl" family of resources for the custom icon. This resource is easily opened using ResEdit, and perhaps by other icon manipulation utilities, and eliminates a lot of the clutter associated with opening a program in ResEdit to get to the icl resources.
Because of changes to the icon formats ResEdit itself no longer works well in OS 9.1 and later for alteration or modification of an icon. However, there is a utility that will allow you to create custom icons or modify existing ones -

  • Bug: Custom AIR Application icons on Mac OS X don't display after install

There are circumstances where custom AIR application icons don't display in certain Finder views after installation.
This is apparent when viewing the application in a docked folder popup. The icon renders as a blank with a sort of no entry slash across it. Another example where this occurs is in a Downloads folder in the Dock (if you immediately create an alias to the app in the your Downloads folder, and your Downloads folder is in the Dock).
In addition, the maximum icon size of 128x128 really not that large. I wish AIR applications could have larger icons, like real applications.

I've seen this occur with numerous applications (native OS X and AIR) and typically restarting the dock (rebooting or logout/login) fixes it for me.  Doing a quick search on Google show's that it's a pretty common occurrence.  Are you still seeing this occur after rebooting?
As for the large icon support, I would like to encourage you to vote for the following two feature requests!
    Application Icon Size
    512x512 Icon Support
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Change folder icons in Acrobat X Portfolios?

Will I be able to change foder icons an an Acrobat X portfolio? Other file icons too?

Yes and no. Adobe has an SDK for creating custom portfolios (which would include creating folder icons). Information can be found here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/portfoliosdk/    However, this requires additional tools to accomplish (ie Flash Builder).
If the changes you want to make are fairly minimal (e.g. changing the color, size, etc) you could always try entering a feature request.

    Here's another discussion:

This discussion sets forth two approaches, and I have made both of them work in their own way. So my question is more or less answered -- more or less, because the approach that is most satisfactory is the one that you outline in that discussion, but it seems only able to set a custom icon to a new folder ("Target").
Please enlighten me if I'm missing something, but is there a way of making the "target" folder a pre-existing folder with another custom icon? What I really want to do is to change a folder icon, not create a new folder with a custom icon.
What's so frustrating is that I can open two folders with different custom icons and drag their invisible icon files back and forth (changing the icons), but I haven't found a way to do that with a script.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Can Tree's folder icon node changed to different icon?

    Hi,
Currently, the tree and tree table node's icon is a "folder" icon. Can this be customized to different icons? We would like to have different icons for the nodes for different level in the tree/tree table. For example, level 1's node is icon A; level 2's node is icon B, etc...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I think the right way of doingthis indeed is skinning. I would try to
    - set a styleClass value to the styleClass property using EL against a managed bean method.
    - The managed bean method now is called for each node. Use EL in the managed bea method to access the #{node} EL to determine the row you are on
    - set the style class to e.g. level1, level2, level3
    - Then in the skinning you use
    level1 af|tree...{}
    level2 af|tree...{}
To define the different icons for the tree levels. Note that using DAF all icons are using folders. So there is no sense in skinning leaf icons

  • Custom channel strip icon in MS2

Hey, I have a .PNG file that I used in MS1 as a channel strip icon, but the same exact file doesn't work in MS2.0.1. I dragged it into the right folder, and it shows up in the list of icons, but when I pick it, no icon shows. When I click the selector again, "No Icon" is highlighted instead of my custom image. It's not a major issue, but this did work in MS1 so I'm curious as to why it stopped working in MS2. Any thoughts?

CCT, I worked it out.  For starters, you should be able to get custom Channel Strip icons working in MS v2.1.3 if you put the icons here: user\Library\Application Support\Logic\Images.  My installation directory is the root Library but I've realized in the past days that others' installation directory is their user library.  This seems to be the reason why custom Channel Strip icons don't work if placed in the root Library for those users.
For MS v2.2.2, the icons need to be placed in the MS app itself i.e. Show Package Contents: \Contents\Resources\Images.  Don't ask me why but they appear correctly when placed there. I wouldn't be surprised that this situation is a bug that was overlooked by Apple when they developed v2.2.x
I have both versions of MS on my system and in v2.2.2, my icons are duplicated because they're in the v2.2.2 app as well as ~\Library\Application Support\Logic\Images.  However, only those icons located in the v2.2.2 app actually work.

  • How do I recover the OS X Root Folder Icons?

I lost the icons for my root folders (Applications, Developer and Users) when I moved those folder and linked to them symbolicly. At the new locations, Applications, Developer and Users all use generic Folder icons, not the custom one with an A, a Hammer and a Mug Shot. I have been trying to transfer them from another Macintosh but every time I copy them to a USB Stick or via the Network, the copies are still using the Generic Folder Icon. How do I get access to the Standard Applications, Developer, Users, Library and System Folder Icons?

Finally, I figured it out! All the default System Icon files are stored in the directory /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle/Contents/Resources/ (you need a terminal to examine the files in the SystemIcons.bundle but you can press OpenApple-Shift-G and paste in the path to access the folder. Then copy the icons you need (in my case, the Folder icons) to your Desktop. Install icns2icon (http://osxiconeditor.phatcode.net/icns2icon.html); it is a drop file so just drag it onto your desktop and then drag the .icns files from your system folder onto it. The system icons will now have external icons matching their contents. You can now OpenApple-I the Icon on the System Icon, and on the OS X folder at the new location and Copy-Paste the correct icon. And Bob's your Uncle.
