Custom Word 2010 Normal.dotm file not applying

I have replaced the Normal.dotm file with a file with out letterhead information on it. On some computers its not applying though. I saved the letterhead file as Normal.dotm and have replaced the Normal.dotm file on their computer but when they open Word
it still opens a blank document. If I replace it on my computer it loads the letterhead file and the same with other users. Its just a select few that ignore the new Normal.dotm file.
I can prove that the file has the letterhead text by renaming the file on their computer and then opening it. When I do this it opens with the letterhead text.

A part of the problem you are seeing is that Word creates its own normal.dotm file when it can't find one where it is supposed to look.
Here is a link to the Microsoft take on sharing the normal template.
You Cannot Share the Normal.dot[m] File Among Multiple Users This is an older article but nothing it says has changed. That is how Word works. When I first was setting up a
LAN using Word, I tried sharing the normal template as well. It is intuitive to do so; but it does not work. The more users you have the more problems it can cause. It is likely that you have had problems with sharing normal.dotm but not recognized that the
problems were caused by that.
The normal template is intended to be a personal workspace/resource and should not be overwritten from a main source. It should be stored in the user templates folder (which also should not be a shared folder). You certainly can create a customized normal.dotm
template and distribute it as a starting point but there is little reason to do so.
Overwriting someone else's normal.dotm template is a bit like opening the drawers in their desk and rearranging them, tossing out items if you don't know their purpose. I learned long ago to not be going through my secretary's drawers!
If you want to standardize your documents you can do that with a combination of
Workgroup Templates and
Global Templates. Global templates will let you share custom building blocks, macros, ribbon and QAT modifications. You can even use them to share styles although usually that is better
done through document templates.
It is quite possible to have a different template than the normal template be the basis for the blank document you see when you start Word or for when you use Ctrl+N. There are examples of this on my downloads page.

  • Word 2010 normal.dotm

Several client make use of the normal.dotm as they start Word 2010, The configuration in Word 2010 loads a normal.dotm on a networkshare.
I have made a change to the normal.dotm that is changed fonttype and size. Several clients show that change when they start Word but several clients show another font. The font is on al clients because it is Arial so that cannot be the cause. it looks like
several clients do not load / read the \\fileshare\normal.dotm correctly.
When i load the \\fileshare\normal.dotm manually thru file - open , then the font is changed accordingly what i have set, but the same file is in the setting of word to load at startup but then it is not the right font....
When i start Word 2010 and choose file - open in the left above corner one can choose templates. The location of that template is different then the one set in the settings of Word.
How can this be, what is wrong?

  • Regarding Words default normal .dotm

    Hi All,
Is there a method to restore words default normal.dotm file  as soon as the add in loads? and delete the existing user created .dotm file? using c# or vba?
    Regards,
    Apoorva

Thanks Eugene , the scenario is that if I deploy my add in on another user's system and they have customised their normal.dotm file, I want to delete their normal.dotm as soon as my add in loads.
Can you please elaborate on how i can accomplish this using System.IO namespace classes with my current ribbon add in solution?  this
is what i have tried so far,but no use, it still uses the old normal .dotm file instead of creating a new one.
private void Ribbon1_Load(object sender, RibbonUIEventArgs e)
                string fileName = "Normal.dot";
                var targetPath = Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(
        Environment.SpecialFolder.Templates));     //users/appdata/roaming/microsoft/templates
                string destFile = System.IO.Path.Combine(targetPath, fileName);
                if (System.IO.File.Exists(destFile))
// Use a try block to catch IOExceptions, to
// handle the case of the file already being
                    // opened by another process.
                    try

  • Cisco CuciLync and Normal.dotm file of MS Word 2010

Hello, I came across a crazy problem with the Cisco CuciLync (version 8.5.4) plugin and Microsoft Word 2010 (32Bit). I have 5 Word documents (in the .docx file format) at the same time on my computer (with Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 64bit). The Word documents have about 5-10 pages of content. I start to modify the first Word document, save these changes, now I switch to a 2nd Word document, make some changes there and save it. If I close now 1 of the 5 open Word documents, I get the following 2 error messages "This file is in use by another application or user. C:\Users\user_name\...\Normal.dotm" and  "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes?" If I disable now the Cisco.ClickToCall in Microsoft Word, I do the same modifications, I do not get these error messages. Can anybody help me with this issue? Any idea where it comes from? Please find attached a Screenshot of the error messages from Microsoft Word. Best regards, Marc Hoffmann

  • When opening .doc from website link, FF appends .docx extention to file & does not open in Word 2010, with incorrect file format error. Pls Help

I'm using Firefox v12 to open a hyperlink from a website that points to a filename.doc MS Word Document for download.
We are then asked to open the file with MS Word (Default), which our installed version is MS Word 2010.
Firefox then renames the file appending a .docx to the filename e.g filename.doc.docx. MS Word 2010 opens with error 'incorrect file format', which is correct as Firefox has renamed it.
Is there a fix or workaround for this?

    Hello Jscher2000,
I can save the file and it opens fine.
It's when I open it directly, Firefox appends the 'docx' extenstion to the filename.
If I continue to reopen from the web link, Firefox renames the file as so
    mydoc.doc-1.docx
    mydoc.doc-2.docx
    mydoc.doc-3.docx
I can open a .doc from a Microsoft site ok.
I have the feeling it's the way the web server is reporting the mime type to Firefox.
The link in question works fine in Internet Explorer.
    best regards,
    Youngielinux.

  • OCT MSP File Not Applying Changes

    Hello All,
I am trying to use an msp file to apply some settings changes; e.g. add and remove a new Normal.dotm, themes, Outlook defaults, etc.  When I edit the file, everything entered in correctly.  I have tried using a batch file and manually running the
msp file and still nothing.  I'm getting a little frustrated as I don't understand why it's not working.  I use a similar msp file for a new deployments and the configurations get applied.  Why doesn't this one work?  Any help would be
    greatly appreciated.

Some settings/features within the OCT, are only applied during the initial installation of Office, and do not apply/update an existing installation of Office.
It's not well documented which settings behave like that, but if you review the TN library documentation for Office customization, there is mention of that limitation.
On a test machine, if you remove Office (uninstall it), and then reinstall it whilst referencing your updated/revised MSPfile, does it work ok?

  • Sysprep unattend file not applying when image is captured with wds (no errors)

So I've been around the block a bit using sysprep and wds.  Recently I've created a reference image with a virtualbox environment using windows 7 x64. I was succesfully able to create a reference image, sysprep it and capture it to the wds server. My

The machine succesfully syspreps and shuts down. I restart the computer pxe boot and capture the image succesfully.
    Now here comes my problem...
Upon deploying the above driver specific image.. my sysprep file is not applied.  Nothing from the OOBE wizard answers to the pc logo , or first logon commands are applied ... nothing.. I have gotten no errors during this whole process.  I have
started to try to read the logs within the panther folder but havent gotten far.
What is weird to me is that I have tried recreating this image... deploy the reference image... add drivers ... sysprep ...shutdown.  And if I boot normally (without capturing the image) the computer shows all of the sysprep changes..  Only when
i capture the image does it not apply the changes....
    I'm stumped...
    Any ides?

Confirm this scenario: You installed Windows, then ran sysprep and used the /unattend switch. Then you captured the image.
In this scenario there are 2 deployment methods.
    1. If you deploy the image with DISM, the answer file generated by sysprep is detected on first boot and settings are applied. It is the same function as if you ran sysprep and chose to restart.
    2. If you deploy the image using Setup.exe, it does not use the answer file specified by sysprep prior to capturing. I have not looked into *why* this happens, but I suspect that after the image is applied, it replaces the unattend.xml with the generic one.
If you are using Setup.exe, you need to use its /unattend switch and point to the answer file location. This location cannot be inside of the image. If you are not using setup.exe in a manual method (using WDS) you will need to apply the answer file to the
install image in the WDS snap-in.

  • Conversion of Microsoft Word 2010 to PDF-Links not working in the PDF

I have a Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit Operating System and Microsoft Word 2010. There is a particular word document(Word 2010) that I need to convert to PDF.I did a "save as" and stored it as a PDF. But the issue in the PDF is that the links in the "Table of Contents" do NOT work. I am using Adobe Reader 10.1.2.Please let me know how could I do the conversion and how can the links work correctly

Adobe Reader 10.1.2 cannot convert DOC files to PDFs. You will need Adobe Acrobat to do this.
Save As > Adobe PDF feature is using Microsoft's PDF converter. You may need to follow up with them regarding the same.

  • Acrobat X Pro - Word 2010 to pdf files

I just bought AcrobatX to create high quality pdf files from Word2010 files in WIndows 7.
Unfortunately when I do create them from inside Word using the Acrobat tab, the program crashes!
However, if I print the same files using  the  Adobe printer, the pdf files are generated. I do not know, however, if the output quality is the same (I select the "press quality" job option).
Could anyone please clarify this issue? I did buy this software just to obtain pdf files with the highest quality possible (press quality) but it seems it is not what I got.
    Thanks
    Edmundo

    Hi,
Thanks again! I have just done what you suggested - no way! Even with everything off, it crahes!
I will follow your advise  of printing using the Acrobat printer. Yet I face now a new problem!! Some of the figures doesnot show up at all!
    >>>you could post it here for us to take a look
Please download an example of a Word (2010) file that crashes from here:
    https://www.yousendit.com/download/cEd0ckhhV3JCSnBFQlE9PQ
In the zip it is also a pdf created by using the Adobe printer. Please take a look at Fig-4-2. It is of bad quality! Any suggestions to improve it? I got just a few (out o a few hundreds)  that bad!.
I insert figures (made by CorelDraw and exported as WMF) in Word as Insert, Pictures.
MANY THANKS for you valuable help

  • Custom settings of Edit-in Preset not applied to image in PS

I am having a problem with my custom made EDIT-IN Preset. While clicking on it launches the image (dng, psd or tiff) in PS, the custom settings of the preset (in my case: 8bit, sRGB) are not applied to the image. Instead the image is opened in PS with the default settings as specified in the Preference menu (in my case: 16bit, ProPhoto RGB).
    I am running LR2.2 & PS CS3 (10.0.1) on a 64bit Windows Vista Business machine.
The settings of the preset are:
    Application: Photoshop.exe
    File Format: TIFF

  • Customizing EBS Oracle Help - "404 File Not Found" Default page

    All,
I am wondering if someone could explain to me how the Oracle EBS Application Help works.  For example, we have a custom form where we do not have a Help Page defined for the form so it sends me to a default page that says the following:
    "404 NOT FOUND"
An error occurred while retrieving Oracle Applications Help information.
Help target US/********* could not be found.
My question is, when I clicked the Help icon, what happens after this?  It would typically find the correct Lang/Application/Form and reference a page within that directories APPL_TOP/help directory.  But when the page is not found something knows to send it to the specific oracle default 404 Not Found page.  Anyone know how this happens?
Forgot to mention I am running on EBS R12.
    Thanks for any help!
    Jase

  • Word 2010 - embedded Excel-Object not opening

    Hi!
All of a sudden, embedded excel-objects (insert -> table -> excel spreadsheat) in word-documents won't open when doubleclicking. Instead, I can see, that Word tries to open it for a second but then the table seems to disappear (blank document).
When altering the view with alt-F9, I can still see the field-code though.
    {EMBED Excel.Sheet.8 \* MERGEFORMAT \s}
    When I remove the
    \* MERGEFORMAT \s
the object opens within Word just fine and can be edited. Also, when I rightclick the object and do a "convert to excel worksheet", it opens within word - the field code changes to {EMBED Excel.Sheet.12} when doing the conversion.
The problem is: The document is an older template and there are hundreds of docs based on that, so changing the template now is no solution (actually, I created a new one that is working, but all the old files are still affected of course).
Everything was working fine some weeks ago - maybe an Update/SP2-Installation made some unlucky changes...
I tried disabling Add-Ins in Word/Excel and checked the "Ignore other application" option in Excel without success.
    Any ideas appreciated!
    Best Regards,
    Stefan

I am trying to share my autotext (created in Word 2010) with my employees who are now working on Word 2013. They have smart boxes and are working through the server. I have tried every "fix" that I've read and nothing seems to be working. HELP

    Hi
Do you have a backup file of Word 2010 Normal.dotm?
If so, replace the current Normal.dotm with the backup file.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
