Customise the Recent Items submenu?

Yes, I realise you can choose how many items you want displayed in these menus. But I'd like to go further. I'd like to list the documents first and I'd like to see them in order of when I opened them last, as most applications list them. I don't suppose this is possible just with the options in the Finder.
So is there an app that will allow me to do that? Or failing that, a hack using Terminal? I want loads of items in the menu but I don't want to have to wait for the most useful part of it to load and scrolling down to it past all the applications, which have easier methods of quick retrieval.
In the old days of OS9 I used to put links to the recent items folders, arranged by date modified, into popup folder tabs at the bottom of my screen. It was incredibly useful. I'm still waiting for something similar, fourteen years later!

I was looking at this again, a couple of hours ago and could not find a direct way, but tried the following and it worked:
Open "User Preferences" and set the # of Recent Items to 1 ( a 0 setting is not possible ).
This will leave the last item used in the list. Click any item in your new project to overwrite the last item. Slug or Bars will do if you haven't started importing yet. Reset # of Recent items to whatever you usually use.
Yes, it is convoluted and a simple "Clear Recent Items" button would do the job. But it's all we have for now. Maybe in the next version.

The recent items menus on Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio neve update, cna clearing the menu doesn't help...how can I fix this?

don't know, but there are certain basic troubleshooting steps that might help.  Delete FCP and DVDSP preferences using preference manager (go to digital rebellion's site for free download)

Do other programs' recent items update?  Does the systems recent items in the apple menu update?  If not, it's probably an os problem rather than an final cut studio problem.  You might try repairing permissions in the diskutility.

  • How do I remove "Recent Items" Documents from the apple menu?

I've been searching for an answer to this question for the better part of 3 hours now.  W
Several iterations of osx ago, there was the ability to separately limit how many recent items were shown for Applications, Documents and Servers.  Over the years, I simply installed a newer version of osx on top, and surprisingly my recent items always eliminated the Documents from the list.
I've since done a clean install of mavericks after installing an SSD, and i've lost this small but important part of my work flow.  No matter what I've tried to remove the documents from Recent Items, it always shows up.  I can still boot into my old HDD (which is now installed as a supplementary drive and also updated and running mavericks 10.9.2), and see from clicking on the Apple Menu > Recent Items that it only displays Applications and Servers.
Try as hard as I can, I can't simply figure out how to remove the documents from the recent items menu.  I've tried editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file, to show 0 items for documnets, but this never seems to work.  (I've since read that this file is simply rewritten on logout.) Strangely, if I go into the old setup System Preferences, Recent Items:  it is showing as None.  I also suspect that maybe I used Tinker Tools or some other utility to change some command line preference (using the gui) several years back.  Not sure how I could investigate what would need to be done to compare files or otherwise figure out how to remove the documents section from the recent items menu.
It's starting to drive me crazy.  Anyone?

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

  • In 10.10 the "recent documents" pulldown does not display actual recent items--it shows the same items time after time. How can I fix that?

In previous versions of OS 10, the "recent items" pull down from the Apple icon (top left) actually showed recent items.  In this version, 10.10, the same items display time after time rather than displaying recent items.  How can this be fixed?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Log out or restart the computer and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Clear Recent Items from the Dock

When I right click on Preview on the Dock, it shows a list of recently opened files.  A friend of mine needs to remove those for some reason.....  He tried clicking File>Recent Items>Clear Menu and clicking the Apple Icon>Recent Items>Clear Menu and restarting Preview.  This removes Recent Items from the Menu Bar but not from the Dock.  Another problem is the last picture that thats open appears when Preview is started.  Is it possible to disable this or preferably the entire "Resume" feature of Lion?

This also happened to me and I was going crazy because the items might of been deleted or from a DVD that is no longer mounted.  So this is how I solved it.
To summarize, you need to delete or rename some files in your local "Library" directory, ie ~/Library/Preferences directory.
For the iWork apps and Preview.  Rename these following files with a "~" in the beginning or delete it or to be safe, copy to another location:
    "com.apple.iWork.Keynote.LSSharedFileList.plist" to "~com.apple.iWork.Keynote.LSSharedFileList.plist"
do the same for these files
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.LSSharedFileList.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.LSSharedFileList.plist
    com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
One way to do it through the GUI is open finder, go to the "Go" menu and press the "option" button.
Choose the Library menu item and open the "Preferences" directory.
Look for the files mentioned above either rename, delete, or move.
Close the application and see if the recent items still appear when you right mouse click the icon in the Dock.
If that doesn't work, then logout and log back in.
Hope this helps or solves your issue.
I just used this to delete the recenttly opened items on Quicktime that appeared on the dock even though the 'Recently Opened' folder frm the Menu was empty. It worked like a charm.
Now I still need to quit the Application after deleting the 'Recently Opened' on the Menu bar in order to make the dock recently opened disappear as well, but it works!

  • Access Recent Items aliases in the Apple menu?

    Hi,
Does anyone know how I can individually delete some of the aliases in the Recent Items folder on the Apple menu? Where do the folder or files live?

Yeah, I'm thinking "OS 9" but shouldn't Apple include a way to easily delete these items? I mean, how hard could it be?
Thanks for the advice though. I found the file, used TextEdit, but couldn't find what I needed, or at least, what I thought would be simple.

  • Modify Recent Items list

I open a lot of torrent files that I really don't ever need to open again.
I was wondering if there was a way to prevent these items from cluttering up the Recent Items menu.
I've looked at the com.apple.recentitems.plst but it just seems to be a list.
Is there a way to exclude certain document types from showing up in the Recent Items menu - sort of like you might with spotlight or a smart folder?
    thanks.

AFAIK, it's the norm. Recent documents only displays ones previously opened, not their current status or whether they still exist.

  • How to clear the recent SAVE locations menu

When I save a new document, a menu of locations appears where I have recently saved other documents. How can I clear this menu? Clearing the Recent Items menu doesn't do it.
I must have inadvertently saved a file to my backup drive once, because the backup folder appears in the menu in addition to the one on my hard drive, and it's impossible to tell these folders apart at a glance — I have to follow the path back. If I inadvertently save a new doc to the backup, it gets wiped out when the automatic backup kicks in. So I need to clear this menu and start over.
(I listed my OS as Tiger, but I see it appears under the Snow Leopard discussion — don't know how to change this. Sorry.)

Use a tool such as the Property List Editor or TextWrangler to check that application's plist file.

  • Why does my "recent items" show recent applications in duplicate?

    Why does this happen?
Just applications show up in duplicate, not recent documents. All I can do is to clear the recent items list. I'm not sure when this development began, and I can't bring it on at will either.

I was revisiting this situation again and explored into one of the Links that "Limnos"
posted, namely, "X Lab Resetting Launch Services".
    Thanks-Limnos.
    It suggested:
    1. Use a third-party utility, such as Cocktail or Yasu, to rebuild or reset, respectively, the Launch Services database. Be sure to employ a version of the utility that is compatible with the version of Mac OS X you are using.
    OR
    2. Reset Launch Services manually: follow the steps in the order specified for the version of Mac OS X you are using.
I tried the easy way out.
I have had "Cocktail" for a long time (v. 4.4-current for Tiger 10.4.11) and let it rebuild the Launch Services database.
Then after a restart The problem seemed to be cured.
    Cleaned it all up nicely
    So far so good.
    No duplicates at all.
I was afraid I would have to re-associate everything in my system all over again, but no, it seems to be behaving nicely.
    I'll re-post if the problem re-occures , thanks.

  • My recent items list appears again after restart. How do I delete it for good?

When I turn on the computer, the recent items list still displays the documents and applications I worked with a few days ago. I delete it, and after restarting the computer, it displays the same list again (not a new list, but the exact same items over and over again).  Any tips?

Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar).  Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed).  The items will be listed to the right, for each category.  Find the items, select, and delete.
It's on page 20 of the manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf
NOTE:  If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed.  Select and delete them from this list.
I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle.  I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

  • Duplicate Items in Recent Items menu

    HI,
Just recently (in the last couple of weeks) I have suddenly been getting duplicate entries in the recent items folder (not in the apple menu as has been discussed elsewhere). I have 2 entries for Disk Utility, ITunes, Terminal etc. I have checked the plist with Onyx and it says the syntax is OK. I have cleared all items in the list. It behaved fine for a few days then the duplicates reappeared again. Should I try deleting the plist file? I currently have the recent items settings for 30 Apps, 5 docs and no servers.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Peter

Last thing to try, then, is rebuilding the LaunchServices database by running this one-line command in the Terminal app (copy & paste), and restart:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*

  • Recent Item List

How to refresh Recent Items on Nav bar or when I click on an item?
    Hi guys,
we connect our ECC with the CRM system. Then I open the SAPGUI for ECC and the Web Ui for CRM and display the same businesspartner.
Now I change the businesspartner in ECC, the middleware works fine and there is no error.
In the Web UI I choose another item from the "Recent List" and go back to the changed businesspartner.
Now we see the old status from the businnesspartner without the changes from ECC. When I press the EDIT button in the businsspartner then I see the changes.
Is it possible to refresh the "Recent Item List" or the businesspartner view when I click on this item?
Is there a methode in class CL_BSP_DLC__TABLEPERS_IMPL which I can use?
    Best Regards.
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
This is not necessairly an answer, I just wonder if your recent items list is being cached by your browser.
Try to clear your internet history / cache / etc.  And then restart the web ui.
    This is just an idea.

  • Lost my pass words in appleworks recent items

I had all my pass words in the recent items file and had the file in the dock. The icon in the dock has a question mark on it and will not open, I go to appleworks file/staring points/recent items. Recent items will not open , a window comes up to tell me it unexpectedly quit. I go to finder and open recent items and click on the pass word icon and I get the message that the alias can't find the original. I have about 30 pass words in that file , I appreciate any help. Thanks,
    steve

Spotlight is pretty simple; you just click on the little Search icon which is probably in your menu bar and then type the filename into the window. If something of that name exists on your system then it stands a very good chance of finding it.
Yvan already mentioned one likely way that the file may have gone missing, i.e., using Finder actions like renaming the file on an AW file while it's open. This is a well-known bug of long standing which has never been fixed and, clearly, isn't going to be.
I don't think it would have been erased, but the effect is the same: When the 'address' is lost to the system that small chunk of memory will be listed as available and, eventually, something else will move in and write over it.

  • "Recent Items" is really confused and inconsistent

Is there any way to get "Recent Items" to be the same in all applications? Basically, I have two sets of "Recent Items". The "Recent Items" in Safari and Mail are almost always wrong and do not get updated. I just now cleared by Recent Items from the Finder and from Safari. Then, I opened a document from the Finder. Next, I opened an attachment inside Mail. Now, I have to different sets of Recent Items menus, depending on what application is running.
Is this a known problem and, if so, is there a known way to fix it? Thanks.

None that I know about. Why would say TextEdit want to know where Safari last visited? It makes sense to me that recent items/folders/etc should only reflect what the current application can deal with. Since Finder deals exclusively with folders, why would you want it know anything about files? What exactly did you do to clear recent anything from Finder and Safari, since there's only a Go->Recent Folders in the Finder and only a History file in Safari?
