Customised layout in iphoto

Hello everyone,
I am currently working on a rather large photo book in photo essay theme. For some pages I have chosen the custom layout, with one picture in the middle and no others around. The one in the middle is grey and the others are blue. I therefore understood, that I can unse just the one in the middle.
When I am now trying to buy the book, it does not allow it, because I have 'frames on one or more pages that do not contain photos'. Does anyone know a way around that?
Thanks

Look for a page with a layout similar to this:
It's the use photo as a page background that's the key to the problem.

  • Layouts in IPhoto when making a book

Is there any way to choose from the many Layouts in Iphoto. What I mean is when your mfaking a book, you get to choose how pictures on each page, and then we choose the layout. but sometimes the mac chooses a layout that I ddin't have an option to choose, due to an odd sized phot etc. Or it some tiems flips the layout around. I'm wondering can I choose which layout out of these mysteriuos extra ones. In Iphoto six I could double click on a layout and it would would switch back and forth. Anyone Know what i'm talking about and how I can do it? Thanks

    mpkline:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sometimes, if the layout is for multiple photos, it will depend on which photo is added first and where. You may have to experiment with adding the photos in a different sequence and/or frame on the layout to see if you can get what you want.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Where are the  customisable layouts in the Lightroom 6 book module?

I have just downloaded and paid for the Lightroom 6 upgrade. Blurb tells me I have over 100 customisable layouts in the book module. I don't, I only have 3 or 4 very basic ones. The Adobe TV videos talk about lots of customisable layouts. Where are they?

  • How can I change get a 2xportrait page layout in iPhoto 11?

I am laying out a new wedding photo album in iPhoto 11 (version 9.2.3) using the Formal hardcover theme. A new album appears with a number of pre-set layouts: one of which has two portrait photos side by side.
There are two pre-set pages with this layout but I want more like this as I have a lot of full length photos from the shoot. However, this layout does not appear in the 2-photo layouts that are offered when I try to change the layout of a particular page. The closest is two landscape photos.
If I drag a portrait photo into one of these, it gets cropped.
Is there a way that I get a two-portrait side by side layout? If not, then can somebody recommend an alternaive to iPhoto for producing high quality printed photo albums?
    Gareth

That theme will only offer landscape for 2 photos per page layouts.
1 - click on the Layout button at the bottom while viewing the page you want to change:
In the Layout tray at the right you can select any number of photos per page and layouts for those photos:
If I drag a portrait photo into one of these, it gets cropped.
Some themes allow you to Control-click on the photo and select "Fit Photo to Frame Size":
but the Formal theme is not one of them.
The Modern Lines theme gives you two portrait per page with a variety of frames under Options and Fit to Frame Size:
With a gray backgroud you get this:
HOWEVER, if you have an image editor that supports layers or Pages (part of the iWork suite of apps) you can create a custom page for the Formal theme with the two portraits side by side.  This tutorial describes how: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book

  • Ibook layouts in iPhoto 6.0

I know that this issue has been addressed earlier, but I have not been able to find answers to this problem. We want to manipulate the layouts that exist, like move panoramic photos to the left side instead of the right, or move the four photos in the six photo layout to the bottom or to the left instead of the top right corner. How do I go about this? Is it even possible? Another question is that the book is for my wedding as a guest sign-book, and we wanted to leave some parts blank. I notice that when there is no photo, it shows up grey. Will that become white when the book is published, or will it be grey? Obviously, we don't want grey spots in our book, and if they are white, that is perfect so people can sign it. I hope this makes sense and i hope someone can help us. Thanks.

    clarity23:
What you have to do is create your own layout image in the size 8.5 x 11 inches at 300 dpi with a 3rd party editor that will handle layers. Photoshop Elements for Mac is, IMO, the best option (more bang for the buck) for that. If the theme you've chosen has a specific color background and frames around pictures then it's much more difficult. You can create a book with no photos but the different layouts. Then follow the instructions in Tutorial #6 for getting each book page into iPhoto as a separate jpg file at 200 dpi. You can then up that to 300 dpi with PSE and then cut and past the various frames, etc. into a blank page of that theme. Then select a one photo per page layout and add your own page.
It can be difficult if, as I said, you're trying to use some of the elements of the theme. If you want to make your own layout from scratch, then it's relatively simple. Just create a blank canvas 8.5 x 11 x 300 dpi and add your photos to it. If your photos are large enough then will up to 300 when you resize them to put on the blank canvas.
When there's no Photo it will not show gray. Just pick a blank page layout or create a sign in page in a text editor, landscape oriented, do a Print to PDF/Send PDF to iPhoto and add that file to a one photo per page layout. It will look something like this rough example of a landscape text demo.

  • Is it possible to get a black background when using Picture Book layout in iphoto?

I want to customize the layouts more in iphoto--either be able to use a black background when using the Picture Book layout, or have more layout options in the Photo Essay layout.  Are either of these possible?
    Thanks!

    Yes.

  • Layout of iPhoto Books

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the general layout of an iPhoto book from landscape to portrait? Generally, my clients have been happy with the books as they are but more recently, I am getting a lot of enquiries about books laid out in portrait.
I've searched a couple of non-Apple web sites for help and guidance but have not come up with anything yet.
    Thanks in advance,
    Cliff

I had the same situation...however, I found it pretty easy to redo the book page by page. It didn't take very long, and seemed easier because of the "Add page" function. I think it took about 20min total.

  • No more layouts on iPhotos's Calendar

    As in the title..
for the first time in eons i wanted to print a calendar from my iPhoto's images.
I just found out, though, that i just have a single layout, called "picture-calendar" , but nothing else.
I wanted to reinstall iphoto over the existing one, but the AppStore won't let me do it, and as it's updated, no action is permitted.
So, i am waondering what can i do in order to fix this problem?
    Thank you,
    D

Did you MBP come with Lion or Mt. Lion preinstalled?  If so then you'll need to use the App Store to reinstatall iPhoto from the Purcahses section.
If the MBP came with Snow Leopard or earlier preinstalled use the disks that came with the MBP or (if you purchased an iLife disc) the iLife disk to reinstall iPhotos and update it to the latest version thru the  Apple - Support - Downloads website.

  • Custom page layouts for iPhoto books- bleeds and type

I've been digging through the forum for info on creating custom page layouts. I have the basics: print PDF (to capture the page BG and graphics elements), manipulate in PhotoShop and place the custom page as a full page photo.
How does iPhoto deal with bleeds? Since I'm trying to recreate the style of the other pages I'd like it to match.
Is all type in an iPhoto book rasterized? The printed PDF retains type. Will rasterized type in PS layouts match "native" text in iPhoto?
I haven't purchased a book yet and I'm wondering if the book is sent to Apple as a PDF with vector data. If that's the case can custom pages be inserted into the PDF with vector type intact?
    Thanks all!
    rg

    gatz:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know much about bleeds but you can manipulate it in the iPhoto preference file with Pref Setter.
Regarding the rasterized type, you'll have to give it a try and then create a pdf of the book to check it out. In iPHoto 5 we used to be able to get a copy of the pdf file that was uploaded to Apple but in V6 that's not possible. I think the pdf file may be the same as we get when creating it via Print to PDF. Here's the info I received from Apple about book quality and materials:
I contacted Apple and asked for information that I could pass on. Here's the reply I received from Apple:
"Thank you for contacting the Apple Print Products Customer Service.
I understand that you would like to know the printing process that is used and the color mode the files should be in, so you can better advise users in the iPhoto forum.
iPhoto version 4 or later, allows you to import and print files through the Apple Print Product service as RGB, grayscale, or CMYK color space. JPEG files with RGB color space are recommended for best results.
While iPhoto 2 can import files of various formats, including RGB color, grayscale, and CMYK, this version requires JPEG files with RGB color space when printing photos and books.

Here are some of the technical specifications for the books, cards, and calendars. I hope this gives you an idea about their quality and form.
    BOOKS
All iPhoto books are printed using acid-free paper for long-lasting image quality. The photos are printed at a high resolution (300DPI if you use iPhoto 6). There is no external modification--such as sharpening or contrast adjustment--of the photos; what you see in the application is what is printed in the book.
    Hardcovers Books
The cover is hard-bound and covered in linen. You select the linen color during the book-ordering process. The hardcover books have a solid, stiff binding that is glued and crimped. The internal pages, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock.
    Softcover Books
The softcover books come in three sizes:
    - Large 8.5 x 11 inches
    - Medium 6 x 8 inches
    - Small 2.6 x 3.5 inches
All of the softcover books have internal pages that are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock. The large softcover book has a white cover (Kromekoteplus Folding Cover, 16 point) with a cutout on the front that reveals the cover-page photo in the book. The covers for the medium and small softcover books have the cover image and title printed directly on the cover. All of the softcover books have a glued binding and feature a thick cover of McCoy 100# Cover Gloss paper stock.
    CARDS
All cards are printed on McCoy 120# Silk Cover paper stock. The postcards measure 4 x 6 inches, and the greeting cards measure 5 x 7inches.
    CALENDARS
All calendars measure 8 x 10 inches and are printed on McCoy 100# Silk Cover paper stock.
To ensure the best print quality, we have chosen to use Kodak NexPress technology. The press uses a dry toner, which is fused to the surface of the paper. Please see NexPress' site for more information:

  • How can I customise layout of photos and text PhotoBooks in Photos

I started a PhotoBook in iPhoto on Maverick. Before it was finished I upgraded to Yosemite and found that iPhotos has been replaced by Photos. When I tried to continue editing ie enlarge my text box or make a photo from landscape to portrait, it does not accept "Command + Option + arrow. As I am in the middle of creating the book, I am in a bit of trouble. Can anyone give me new commands that work in "Photo"?
    Annie.e

Have you tried using iPhoto and the iPhoto Library?  You will need iPhoto 9.6.1 but if you had any version of iPhoto 9 at the time of upgrade you may be able to go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.6.1.
You've learned one of the age old adages of computing: Never upgrade before finishing a project.
One method of customizing a page in a photo book is to create the page in Pages in the landscape orientation for US letter - borderless.  When done do a Print ➙ Save as PDF of the one page.  In Preview select  the one page and export as a jpeg.  Add that jpeg file to Photos add to the Book and use in this layout:
which is using the photo for the page's background.
A tutorial on how another method to customize a page (but for iPhoto) is: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Some of the elements can be used for Photos.  I'm working on a tutorial for Photos but it won't be ready for a while yet.

  • I want to use the Photo Essay layout in iphoto, but with a black background

but this doesn't seem possible (only white bg).  How do I apply a black background to the Photo Essay layout?
    Thank You!

Thanks for those examples.  Yes, I see how to change bg color with a text page, but bg colors are still greyed out when I try to use them with a photo-only page.
It is impossible to select the black (or any other color) bg.  Perhaps this is because, as you said, the white border is part of the Photo Essay template.  This isn't an issue in other templates, and I would be perfectly happy using Picture Book, but that template doesn't give the same arrangement options, particularly on the 6-photos to a page layouts.  I wish there were more flexibility/options with these layouts--they are very limiting.

  • Page Layout in iPhoto '08

I don't see a way to set page layout to landscape, so that you could fit 6 up on a contact sheet, with larger images. There is too much wasted space trying to do 6 up with page in portrait mode. Ideas?

If you select six landscape photos and hit print then select a custom print size that will fit them all on the page (say 2.6" X 3.6") they will all 6 show in the preview and all six print - although cropped - if you want no cropping then pick a size in a 3 x 4 ratio (assuming that that is what ratio your photos are in) like 2.34" x 3.6"

I updated  i Mac and now have i Photo 11 with Mac OS X 10.6.8. Choosing slideshow in albums and books gives you an option to stop the show with cursor and choose music. But I have the problem that this pop up window is dead. I cannot bring music from i Tunes library into it. Stupid preselected music just goes on and on. Help me.
