Customizable EQ in Zen Mi

hi people...i ran a search for this topic and am surprised to find out that there's pathetically little info about this feature in zen micro.
Anyway, i wanted to make full use of this awesome feature because i realised that if i use the other EQ settings (ie. rock, pop). the music that i listen to sometimes get distorted, ie. there will be some cracking sound. However, i only know that the different Hz represent different frequencies. I don't know which is the best combination i should use to obtain the best quality for the music. Anyone has any idea which combination i should use? I tried:
80 Hz : 8
250 Hz : -0
k Hz : -8
4k Hz: -8
3kHz : 6
It's better than the rock mode, coz i dun get distorted sound..but the sound is too soft, and i will have to use volume 5 and above to get a decent loudness..however, in the long run, it's going to drain my battery really fast..u guys here have any suggestion? i want to try new combination of settings.. thanxs in advance!

I listen to many genre of music, like ballad, r&b, pop, new age, etc...
and i use Sennheiser headphone, so i guess it's pretty good. What i meant by soft is, with the old EQ settings i use, i get really soft sound, so i always have to pump the volume high up. And as u know, EQ mode plus high volume is gonna drain my zen micro battery in no time. So i am asking for more opinions, after it's a customizable EQ isn't it's So there are tonnes of combination people use..and i am interested in finding out more! So keep the comments coming..thanxs!

  • Creative Zen Review With the AudioBook Listener In Mi

Here is a copy of my review of the Creative Zen which I just published on the amazon.com mp3 player forum in the thread I started over a year ago entitled "What's the best player for AudioBooks " It is the longest thread in the forum with little indication of slowing down, and it can usually be found as the first thread in the forum.
    http://www.amazon.com/tag/mp3%20play...MxM6KCQW5Q9B6C
I wound up getting the Zen 4GB a few weeks ago but delayed posting until I figured out how I liked it.
    - I like that it has a big screen with big text that I could get by using without my reading glasses (old eyes) in a pinch. That is a very toughtful touch I have't seen on any other players (not that I've seen them all.)
    - The big screen will also show pictures and videos which I don't care much about but is a nice feature if desired.
    - The big screen doesn't come with a cover and it will get scratched up fast. It took me a while to figure this out so my screen got a little scratched up before I realized it.
Consider screen covers mandatory. They are sold seperately in a 3 pack for around $8. This is so important the device ought to have come with at least one screen cover in the box, even if it raised the price $2. My screen cover has been on for a few weeks and shows no sign of wear or coming loose. I did combine it with a rubber device cover I got on amazon for $3 which protects the whole device and covers the edges of the screen and screen protector. The unit is now protected. The cover comes with a little strap and D-Ring clip which is good for hanging onto some piece of clothing.
    - It has a built in battery which is good. It supposedly takes a long time to recharge but that is not an issue for me. I just plug it in to a USB port with the included 4" long cable and it has plenty of time to charge during the day for my use. A fast AC charger is available at extra cost (~$25 I think.)
    - Defect: The unit shuts off after being on pause for a few minutes (good) but it starts up at the beginning of the track when you restart (bad.) If you turn it off, it restarts where you left off as it should. This would not be an issue for music listeners, but it is for audiobook listeners when the track may be an hour to several hours long.
    - Defect: Bookmarks are not at the top of the Menu list and although some menus are customizable, the one with Bookmarks is not.
    - Defect: You can't get to Bookmarks when in the book. You have to back up to Music Menu, click to get to menu, and scroll 2 spots to get to Bookmarks. Not a deal breaker when you get used to it, but clearly not designed properly with the audiobook user in mind.
    - Sound quality: very good. Even with music, very nice.
    - Included headphones: Nice sound. They fall out of my ears and get tangled up a lot but I think thats true of most earbud headphones. I'm going to get the Sony Sport headphones I've had before with a foldable over the head strap.
    - Bookmarks: 0. Plenty for me. (Who listens to more than 0 books at a time )
    - Price: $90 for 4GB. I thought that was quite reasonable.
SUMMARY: With a few menu enhancements and the ability to return to it's place after a pause/shutdown, I'd consider this device close to perfect for the audiobook listener.

Try going into "Control Panel->Administrati've tools" and clicking on "Computer Management". Find "disk management" in the left pane and click it. Your Stone should be in the right somewhere. I think you need to right click, then "choose dri've letter and paths" and give it a dri've letter with the "add" button. Let us know if that works.

  • Q&A Guide about ZEN Touch 2

    Hey people!
I had time to kill, and I've been around since a while now; I now own a ZEN Touch 2 since more than 6 months. I figured out I'm able to help quite a lot of people about this device, actually (even though I don't have an astronomic number of posts), and I felt like writing a little guide about common questions about the ZEN Touch 2 could help, why not?
First of all, this is a guide applying to the ZEN Touch 2, I don't know about the ZiiO. Maybe my tricks will work on both devices, but I can't be sure about it.
    LAST UPDATED: November 23th 2012.
Q: Why does my ZEN Touch 2 freeze so often?
I've got 2 theories about why these freezes happen so often: I own another Android device, which have a fairly weaker processor than the ZEN Touch 2, and it does not freeze at all. So the ZEN Touch 2 is quite powerful! But even on Android 2.2.1, it's perhaps the installed stock firmware that is unstable. That cause the problem.
Second theory, I believe the ZEN Touch 2 don't have much RAM availible! Around 200-256 MB. What's interesting here, is that my other cellphone does have a weaker processor (600 MHz VS 800 MHz), but it also have more RAM, 512 MB! That could be the reason why the ZEN Touch 2 freeze so often, when the device is basically running out of RAM.
Or it could be both! An unstable firmware installed, and no enough RAM. Who knows?
Q: Okay, but how can I fix this issue?
There's no magic way to make your device running super-fast like any other smartphone, especially if the problem is the lack of RAM, rather than the unstable firmware. The number 1 solution, it's obvious: uninstall APPs. The more APPs are installed, the more RAM they use. The more your device is going to freeze/crashe. Myself, I don't have many APPs installed, only 17 (Some of them being like 500 Ko, or even extensions or themes, that are only 150 Ko). I use my ZEN Touch 2 only for listening to music, and browsing the Internet using Flash Player. It does the job well enough.
What you could also do, is install the APK/APP Fast Reboot Pro. I have it installed, and it free your phone memory everytime you unlock your screen, or press the widget. Extremely usefull. That'll help to prevent the ZEN from freezing, a bit.
Well, even though I have 17 APPs installed, including Fast Reboot Pro, my Touch 2 still crash, rarely. I've been experiencing a serious issue about my ZEN booting loop, for no reason at all! Had to boot in recovery mode, and wipe the data. Which lead me to think the stock firmware can also be the problem for unstability.
Q: How do I install APPs on the ZEN Touch 2 ?
Since the Market is unavailible (I've tried to install it without any success. However, seems like some people managed to install it, most probably with root. I've tried, but cannot get it to work, myself), you'll have to download APK files. You have the choice to download from ZiiO Space, or from any other website. Download an APK file, save it anywhere on your SD Card, then open the built-in APP "Explorer" on the ZEN. Lauch the .APK, install it, and you're done.
Remember to check "Enable unknown sources" on the "Manage Applications" menu!
A fastest method, you could manually download and install "SlideME". I've used it for a while, and it's a Android-Market / Google-Play "Like". It'll work without any problem on the ZEN.
Q: Is the ZEN Touch 2 rootable ?
    Yes it is!
First thing first, rooting your device will void your warrantee. I did it, since I live in Canada, and I have no intention of returning the device in California if it break. I am not responsible if you brick your device doing the process, even though nothing wrong should happens. If you don't know what is Root Access, you better not doing this.
I've used the following method. It worked like a charm.
Install the Z4Root APK. Now your Antivirus (Computer maybe, and ZEN Touch 2 antivirus as well, if you have one) will warn you it contain a malware. Z4Root is not a virus! Simply because it perform actions that can be dangerous to your device, that's why you get a warning.
Launch Z4Root, and press the "Root" button (Not temporary). Z4Root will do the rest automaticly! Then your device will reboot, which is normal. Don't do anything during the rooting process, however!
If the rooting worked, you should now see the APP "Superuser" in your APP Drawer.
You still have the option to Un-Root your device - assuming you want to return the ZEN to the store, for example - by launching Z4Root again, and press the button "Un-Root". Simple as that.
Q: Can you install a Custom ROM such as Cyanogenmod ?
I've tried without any success... I was hoping install another firmware would make the device as stable as it should be.
I installed ROM Manager, but when the APP ask you to backup your current bootloader and select your device, the ZEN Touch 2 isn't in the list, so I couldn't perform the backup.
There are more complex ways of installing another ROM, but I haven't tested those. This is becoming quite dangerous.
I requested help on XDA Forums, but haven't got any, sadly.
    Q: The GPS doesn't work !
Okay, so I don't know if your device really is defective, but I can tell you about my experience; I always disliked Google Maps APP, since it requires you have a Wi-Fi connection availible to use your GPS. Not pretty helpful when outside.
What I recommend you, is to install the APP Locus (Keep that in mind: the more APPs you install, the more your device will freeze.). Free version is powerful enough. What I like about this magical APP, it allows you to download maps, so that you can view them offline (They are pretty big in size)! Download a few maps, and activate your GPS, it should seek your position.
I believe when people says their GPS doesn't work, it's mainly because the ZEN Touch 2 GPS is really slow to find your position. Really. I first had trouble with this too, and for the GPS do to his things, this can takes up to 15-30 minutes, no kidding. And when the GPS work, it have chances to loose your position randomly.
So yeah, sad to say that, but the GPS on the Touch 2 isn't the best. My position is find instantly on my other 600 MHz smartphone (LG Optimus One).
Q: What is the Recovery Mode, and how do I access it ?
You can access Recovery Mode by holding the HOME button and then turning ON your device at the same time. This menu can be really useful, and even save your device, like it did for me.
    Here are the options availible:
    - Reboot System Now;
    - Apply Sdcard : update.zip;
This is used to update your firmware if you're still on Android 2.1. You could also install Custom ROMs with the filename update.zip that you've put to the root of your internal storage. Highly not recommended to install any Custom ROM, since these ROMs aren't customized for the ZEN Touch 2, simply!
    - Wipe Data / Factory Reset;
This delete all of your data on the ZEN, to bring it back to his original state. For some reason, when I used this option, it kept everything that's on my internal storage (Music, Pictures..). GLAD that did. What I've lost, were the APPs I installed, and my Android settings. My APPs were all backed up, so that was no big deal. I wiped the device 3 times, and I can confirm that the data in /mnt/sdcard (The internal storage where you put your music, on USB) isn't deleted. All you have to restore is APPs (If they're backed up, that's fast) and ZEN settings.
Also, be advised that wiping the device does not "unroot" the ZEN - Superuser APP is still there, and the device is still rooted. Notice that if you have uninstalled system APPs (see below), the APPs won't be reinstalled automatically. You'll have to reinstall them manually, if you want them back - hope you have a backup of these APPs!
I had to use this option to stop my ZEN from booting in loop. I thought it wouldn't change anything!
    - Wipe Cache Partition;
Wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use.
Thanks to Haroon Q. Raja from AddictiveTips for the info.
Q: Would you qualify the ZEN Touch 2 as a durable unit ?
Well, "on the outside", yes. People (Not me! :P) dropped my ZEN twice, without any consequence (That freaked me out).
Maybe I was lucky, don't know. But durable "on the inside", the firmware and all this stuff, it's a no-no. I should you have more chance that your ZEN will die for no reason because of the firmware, rather than die because you dropped it (Well, just don't drop it in the pool...).
Q: The stock music player suck, I have no control at all !
What I recommend you to install (Personally) :
    PlayerPro for the look;
PowerAMP for functionalities. I used PowerAMP, since it sort my music better. I've switched to NRG music player, since PowerAMP became glitchy, for some reason.
Both are shareware, but since there's no access to the Market, you have no choice, but to download illegally. I apologize Creative, for approving the download of APPs, but what else can we do? Simply make the Markey availible, that will sove this issue.
If you plan on getting PowerAMP, get it here, along with the Full Version Patch (You HAVE to be rooted for this to work! Tested, and work in my case):
    http://forum.mobilism.org/viewtopic....fdb7e20fd84c70
    1. Unistall your current version of PowerAMP.
    2. Install PowerAMP.2.0.4.467 APK (Do not run it!)
    3. Install PowerAmpPatcher by ChelpuS APK
    4. Start the Patcher, and press the button.
    5. Reboot the ZEN, then start PowerAMP. That should do it.
Warning: You will loose all your previous PowerAMP settings, however!
Since the ZEN Touch 2 is not a Google cellphone / has no Android Market, this is the only way to have PowerAMP all the time on your ZEN.
NRG Music Player is pretty decent as well, it can play different formats that PlayerPro can't. Still a shareware, but easy to download and install without hassle.
Q: Which Photo Gallery do you recommend ?
Everyone agree, nothing is worst than the Android stock Gallery, super slow, and doesn't sort your pictures at all! Again, I have 2 recommendations:
Grab Quickpic or Picturen. Both are extremely light (500 Ko), fast and there are a lot of zoom steps, for us ZEN Touch 2 owners without any multi-touch support! You can also hide the useless folders, or add a password to these hidden folders, if you prefer!
JustPictures! is also excellent, as well. Take a bit more space, a bit slower, but the interface is more attractive, and One-Touch zoom is supported. Some functions that are in QuickPic aren't in this APP, but I feel like JustPictures sort my photos better. I can put differents "accounts" or "folders" to sort all my pictures.
    Screw the original 3D Gallery!
    Q: Any browser I should get ?
That really depend on what you do...
Read this article, from november 2011:
    http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Android-...view-1705.html
Opera Mini is lightning fast, but unfortunately, Flash Player is unsupported on this browser!
Note: Avoid browsing the Internet with a ZEN full of APPs, you'll get in trouble. I did this, and this was a nightmare, freezing all the time, have to reset...
I do this now, but with my 17 APPs installed. It's quite OK, I should say. Especially that I use Flash Player a lot.
Q: Any Home Replacement you recommend ?
I've been using Go Launcher Ex for a while, because it's resonably fast, beautiful and way customizable; ADW Laucher is pretty fast, too. I've now switche to Nemus Launcher - way lighter (The GO Dev Team applications really are getting bloated by useless features, sadly), and still pretty beautiful. Go Launcher Ex is more customizable, but is getting bigger and bigger in size (And RAM, maybe. Not sure.). 8-10 MB or up for an APP? Even for a Home Screen, I hope you're kidding me.
Both APPs allow you to add folders to the APP Drawer ! Excellent!
Q: I want to disable / customize the lockscreen.
    Disable the lockscreen: NoLock;
    Customize the lockscreen: WidgetLocker.
Q: Does the games play well ?
Yes, pretty good, with the 800 MHz processor of the ZEN Touch 2 !
Comparing it to the 600 MHz processor of my LG Optimus One, there really is a noticeable differece in fluidity. The vast majority of the games doesn't lag on the ZEN Touch 2, that's great.
If you want to try those games emulators (SNES, Genesis...), go ahead, they work decently. Unfortunately, since the Touch 2 doesn't have multitouch, that's a problem, but try to set Left-Right as volume Up-Down to move your caracther, it's pretty playable and fluid enough. The best games are the RPGs, for sure, since multitouch isn't necessary at all.
There are also 3D emulators, such as N64oid or PSX4Droid; these also work, but watch out! At that point, 800 MHz is not enough for these games to be "playable". Super Mario 64, for example, is the most playable game availible for N64oid, and still then, it is really slow (Not that enjoyable, seriously).
You're free to try N64oid or PSX4Droid for fun, but just saying, if you want to freeze your device, this is the way to go.
Super Mario 64 shouldn't freeze instantly your device. However, Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong 64 or Tony Hawks (Tested) freeze your device for sure - you wouldn't even get past the "Press Start" screen. My advice: only try Super Mario 64.
Still then, the ZEN does play games (2D or 3D) smoothly enough!
Q: My ZEN keep booting in loop! What should I do ?
That happened to me once in a while, and this is freaky.
"ZEN Touch 2" screen, "Touch the Sound of Perfection screen" again, and again, and again...
    First: wait. Maybe it'll boot
If your launcher still doesn't start, reset button (Inside the SD Card slot, very tiny) is your only choice, of course. Reset, then power it up again. It booted for me all the time, except once.
If that still doesn't work: Recovery Mode, like stated earlier.
Now, here's what could happen if you reset during the boot sequence; I got this extremely annoying problem like 3 times. Hooray, you can get to the launcher!
Now, what can unfortunately happen, is that you get random popup like "SmartKeyboard Pro Force Close", this stuff. You'll keep getting these popups. That mean the vast majority of your 3rd Party APPs are corrupted, and you'll have to uninstall, then install again almost every single APP... This is a serious pain!
Now, don't install again. It is very important that you uninstall first, then reinstall. Otherwise, it won't work. Luckylli enough, your stock APPs will remain intact (Default Music Player, ZiiO Space, Explorer...)
Hope you don't get this problem!
Q: The ZEN freeze at "Touch the Sound of Perfection" screen...
I would suggest you to wait for a while; I guess it's because the ZEN is getting too hot. Reset the device so it can power OFF, and wait for the ZEN to cool down a bit (Do not reload it, unless you don't have the choice to.), and try again later. Also try to connect the ZEN to USB, it'll power ON on it's own, perhaps it'll get to the Home Screen. If it still freeze, too bad: do a factory reset (that should work).
Q: Can I uninstall preinstalled System APPs (ZiiO Space, Audible, Default Browser) ?
Yes, you can! I'll show you the easiest way to do it!
If this isn't appropriated, ask me Creative, I'll remove this question.
First, you HAVE to be rooted, again!
Second: doing this can be seriously dangerous if you delete a APP that is required for the system to work, you could really kill your ZEN! Again, I take no responsability if you kill your ZEN because of this!
Okay then, download the APP SDK Stock APP Removal (Thanks to the developpers!):
    http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&...vTHqe6KdBudQLg
Install it (If you have an antivirus on your ZEN, it'll detect it as dangerous. Ignore it. It's normal, since the APP allow you to delete system APPs, which can be dangerous), run it.
You can now see a list of every single APP installed on your ZEN, including the system APPs. ALWAYS make a backup of the APP when you delete one! The APP itself being extremely easy to use, no need to explain how it works, you'll understand it by yourself, for sure.
Just keep in mind, it is your responsability to verify if it's safe to remove an APP or not! Always check!
I used the APP to remove ZiiO Space, Audible and the default Browser (Without any consequences), since I never use those. Not sure if it's safe to delete the default 3D Gallery.
Mainly because I want to free up the most space as possible on my ZEN to avoid freezing issues, of course!
Q: How can I backup my APPs ?
It's quite easy to do. I've realised backing up my APPs was very important, on the ZEN Touch 2, since you never know when the device is going to freak out, when you'll have to do a reset, and that your APPs get corrupted!
You can of course use Titanium Backup, but I would recommend Smart App Protector / Pro, for his simplicity.
The main purpose of this APP, is to password/pattern-protect your APP (Which does the job perfectly well), but you can also backup (on SD Card, well, ZEN internal storage) and restore your APPs extremely easilly. No root required, here!
This APP completely saved me, when I wiped my device...
Q: What about my contacts ?
In the stock Contacts APP, there's an option to do a full backup of your contacts, on the ZEN internal memory.
If for some reason, you can't find it, download the APP Go Contacts Ex (In my opinion, the best contacts APP availible). This APP also have an option to backup and restore your contacts super easilly.
Q: In some cases, the ZEN Touch 2 isn't loud enough!
Something I would recommend is using a different music player with an equalizer. PowerAMP + PowerAMP patcher should do the job. Open the equalizer and increase the value of the first bar on the left. You'll get a small volume boost. I do use it for some tracks that have the volume REALLY low.
Q: The Agenda / Calendar does not work at all! When I start it, I get the message "You have no calendar" !
Dear calendar... It's always been a pain to set the calendar on the ZEN Touch 2, since it's not a cellphone...
    2 recommendations:
First: forget it. I've tried, and seems this is possible to get this to work, but quite uneffective. First, you should download the APP Calengoo, a more than excellent calendar. It'll sync with your Google Calendar, so try using a Gmail account, to get it to work. It seems to have troble with the sync, and it doesn't work all the time.
Haven't done this in a while, this is seriously a pain. I'm using the calendar on my LG smartphone anyways. I won't be able to help that much about this issue.
Second: what you could do instead, is to download the calendar Jorte. It's a standalone agenda, so it does not requires sync to work at all. It'll work without any problem on your ZEN, you don't have to set-up anything.
However, I fairly prefer Calengoo over Jorte, way more powerful.
    Q: Where's the reset hole?
Inside the micro SD slot. You can use a lockpipe (recommended) or a linguee mine (less safe).
    Q: Is the battery removable?
Unfortunately, no. Unless you manage to open the ZEN in a very specific way, using a knife and a hairdryer to make the glue melt, I've read. You should probably gain access to the battery this way, but I've been completely unable to know the exact battery type (Lithium-Ion, but details), so replacing it would be a real pain. Creative couldn't help me, since they do not encourage self repair; they recommended me to purchase another device if this case happen, which I honnestly find pretty ugly.
Q: The default Android keyboard is not good enough...
The APK "Smart Keyboard Pro" is the answer.
Q: I would like to quickly turn ON WiFi, and ajust screen brightness without going in the Settings all the time.
    Grab the APK "Extended Controls".
That's it, hope this guide was helpful!

I'm pretty happy with the device--everything pretty much works--but doubt my experience would have been so positive without this guide. I do have some observations as a kind of follow up.
    1. I'd recommend staying with Creative's web browser. I tried a couple of alternatives. I tried Opera and Firefox. I thought they were painfully slow. I quickly abandoned them. The default browser seems good enough. That's not really what I got the zen for.
    2. I bought PowerAmp. I had issues where it would work for a few days and then fail with licensing issues. Reinstalling fixed matters, then the licensing failure recurred. So I tried ProPlayer. To me, it's better. I like the way it handles folders.
    3. I bought Locus Pro. It's pretty good. I like the ability to download a map so you're not tied to the internet. The GPS is slow, but it does work.
    4. I did root the device with z4root. For me, the only advantage seems to be that I need to be rooted to get ClockSync to work. Being able to sync the device's clock with NTP is a really professional touch.
    5. I use Go Launcher Ex (paid version). One thing to mention is that the default launcher has a Bluetooth widget which doesn't seem to survive the installation of Go Launcher Ex. I installed another Bluetooth widget I found on AndroidPit App Center. By the way, this App Center seems pretty decent, since Google Play isn't supported. (I also use the SlideME Marketplace.)
    6. I like the Go Power Manager for monitoring the battery. It has a widget and power usage modes that are quite good.
    7. I don't seem to be having lock up problems. (Note that I only use the default browser). I think this may be due to my being really careful about RAM usage. There are a set of things I've done in this area. First, I use StartupManager. (This is a second reason to root the device.) This keeps the things running at start up to the minimum you want. I've also installed FastReboot. I run this from time to time. But there are two other things that I really rely on. One is the Go Task Manager. This lets you monitor RAM usage and kill things to recover RAM. Another thing I use is a widget--I can't remember where it came from--that displays RAM usage on the home panel and a button in the shape of a broom, which, when tapped, recovers RAM. I think this is part of Go Task Manager.
    8. It seems obligatory to have a scanner app for all the 2-D bar codes that have sprung up everywhere. I haven't seen any advice about which app is preferred. I'm using Unibet Scanner, which seems to work.
    9. Because Google Play isn't supported, I've had to get some things via googling for apks. One finds these in strange quasi legal places and I worry about viruses. I'd be interested in advice regarding a virus scanner.
Thanks again for the guide. -- al
    Thank you very much!
    1. Maybe you want to try Dolphin Browser Mini / HD, it's pretty powerful. But if you're looking for a lighter web browser, you could give BoatBrowser Mini a shot, if you want to.
    2. I've read that PowerAMP cannot activate on a non-Google phone, which I find pretty ridiculous.. I have to patch it with an illegal app, but now I get that strange noise when my music play, and the app is basically dead, unless I reinstall and loose all my settings!
    7. That's the right thing to do. If you don't have much APPs installed, that shouldn't lock up.
    9. Same here. I've used Lookout Antivirus before, but you wouldn't be able to uninstall it, if you're not rooted. I've then switched to Zoner Antivirus (Free). Less known, but for some reason, I've read it detected more viruses than any other free Android antivirus.
    Enjoy the ZEN Touch 2.

  • Problem with transfer and ordering of tracks on new Zen Nano P

I recieved my Gb Zen Nano Plus player on wednesday and transferred quite a few tracks to the player that night. They transferred fine, I was able to customize the playing order and all the songs play fine.
But since then, I have been unable to transfer tracks to the player or change the order of the tracks. The player is recognised when I plug it in, but I am just unable to do anything with the tracks!! I have plenty of memory left and it isn't anything to do with the USB.
I really need to know what's going on and how to fix it :-(
    Help!!!

What error message do you get when you try to transfer the extra files?
Are all files in the root folder? If so see the FAQ.

  • An extensive look at the Zen Vision:M for those considring buying one (plus my firmware wishli

<SPAN> Well first, I want to say that this is the 0th mp3 player that I have owned. This is definitely the best and most powerful player I have ever owned. With that said, its not perfect either, hence the purpose of this review. As I did on this board with the Zen Micro, I write this review in hopes that Creative will listen. Hopefully, creative will read this and take it to heart.
    SOUND QUALITY:
<SPAN> This is what any music device should be about right? Nothing else matters if the sound quality stinks. I used to own Creative?s Zen Micro. The sound on it was great but the bass was lacking. The best sounding mp3 player I?ve ever owned was Iri'ver?s old H20. With its customizable SRS settings, it still stands out against all others I have encountered. If that Iri'ver was the best, I am happy to say that this little device is a very close second. Creative included a bass boost function, and paired with the customizable EQ settings, the sound is amazing. It knocks the micro out of the ballpark.
    MENU NAVIGATION:
<SPAN> The menu on this thing is very familiar to that of other Zen players, including the micro. That?s not a bad thing since the navigation system is the most popular among most mp3 players of this class. I used to own Phillip?s HDD 6330, and that player and the 5th generation iPod have something that the Vision:m lacks. I have all of my music specifically organized by genre. I would like to go into the genre folder, and select a song by title, not by artist, then title. On the 5G iPod, and the HDD6330, the first menu option when going into the genre folder in ?All Titles?. So, all you had to do was select genre / all titles and you had every song in your library from that genre. This player lacks that ability.
<SPAN> I will give praise to Creative for its side alphabetical bar. This has made scrolling my library very much easier. This is a very innovati've feature to use. I also give them props for making the main menu customizable. If Creative will add that one thing, its menu system would be unmatched and close to perfection!!!
    FEATURES:
<SPAN> Creative has built a host of features in this thing as they do with a lot of their players. The FM radio is good and the voice recorder is good. Now lets get to the good stuff. The Vision:m actually lets you choose your own background. Not only that, but for the picture you do decide to use, its lets you edit its brightness and color tone. This feature definitely comes in handy. I selected a nice picture of me and my son at the town fair, and it was way to bright. The letters on the screen were hard to read no matter what theme I used. Upon selecting a picture to use as background, the player gives you the option to raise or lower its brightness and color tone. I lowered the brightness and changed the tone and now, the background looks great. Creative should have gone that extra mile and gave the player the ability randomly select a new background every day.
<SPAN> Also, I am liking the content password feature that gives you the ability to hide video and picture folders. Basically, if I wanted to, I can create a folder on my Vision:m, put some porn in it (come on, that?s what this is really about), and on the player, set it the folder to ?protected?. On the players System settings, set the option to hide all protected folders to ?hide? and you are all set. To unhide the folders, go back into System Settings and select it. Upon selecting it, you will be prompted for the password. I also like the fact the Creative include a calendar and organizer into the player. It?s nice however unnecessary it may be.
    USER INTERFACE:
<SPAN> I have got to give creative its pro
    ps.
Those who criticize Creative for copying iPod really have no idea what Creative has done! Its ergonomic design is the best I have seen since the iPod!!! It is designed for one handed thumb use. One of the problems with the micro and other players like it is the fact that its touch pad was too sensiti've and by simply holding the player, it was a good chance you would accidentally access a function, when the hold switch wasn?t on. The only thing that?s touch sensiti've here is the scroll pad. Creative brilliantly included two side buttons along the thumb pad, which you can easily press with your thumb. This is not copy-catting. This is innovation! Add to that, the other outside buttons that surround the thumb pad are NOT touch sensiti've. They are clickable buttons. The chances of accidental button pressing are greatly minimized. My only problem with the setup is that Creative foolishly assigned the scroll pad buttons to song skip access. That?s fine and dandy when you are in the ?Now playing screen?, but when navigating the menu, it'ss a slight discomfort. The side buttons would be extremely useful when navigating the menu system. Especially with one handed use.
    VIDEO and PICTURES
<SPAN> Well, the one feature that sets this player apart is its ability to play video right? Well, when I first got my player and through my content on it, I threw some videos (less porn) that were on my computer on the player. They played flawlessly with no video conversion necessary. They included a downloaded episode of ?BattleStar Galactica?, ?Boston Legal?, and ?Prison Break?. They all played beautifully. I don?t know if the player?s CPU can handle it, but I would love the ability to fast forward or scan through long video files a lot faster. Selecting ?Seek To? from the menu helps a lot, but its not fast enough. Also, I would like for Creative to add quicktime or .mov<SPAN> support if its possible (legally). My digital camera and cell phone records video clips in .mov format. I also have lots of trailers on my computer in quicktime format. It would be nice if I can simply drop some of the clips on the player without converting them first.
<SPAN> The Pictures show great on this player. You can't scroll through them as quickly and as crisp as with the iPod but there is a reason for that. The ipod scales down and convert photos so they can be shown on the screen. The Creative doesn?t do that. Simply drop the picture on the device and it will be displayed. The benefit to this method is that the player allows you to zoom in on the photos which is a very nice feature and an adequate trade
In. It makes transferring pictures faster also.<SPAN> Add to that, you can switch the folder view and thumbnail picture view to vertical scroll. Speaking of which, where is the USB OTG? This would be a big plus if you had it.
<SPAN> The AV out works great also. I don?t have a/v cables that connect to the player on hand but I did have red and black audio cables that would connect. I stuck the jack in about half way and connected the red on to the video in port on the TV and it worked. I still highly recommend purchasing the a/V cables for it.
    PLAYER DESIGN:
<SPAN> What can I say. So, it looks like the iPod. But should we really fault Creative for that? iRi'ver?s H300 was the first mp3 player to have support for photo?s. When the iPod photo debuted, you could very well have accused Apple of ?copying? iRi'ver. The only way this player copies the iPod is the fact the screen is the same size and dimension. Oh, and the controls are on the bottom. Kind of like the same way Apple ?copied? iRi'ver. I emphasize the word copy because both of theses players were in development at the same time. Creative released their player a short time after Apple. There is no way Creative could have thrown a player this functional and feature heavy together so quickly. The fact that the players look similar is mere coincidence. Other than that, like the 5G ipod, it'ss a beauty. The fact that the buttons glow gives it an extra coolness. I give creative props for its new interface which rocks and what I like to call? The Thumb Click?<SPAN> Oh, and Creative, the next time you release a player, you can keep the so called ?sync adapter?. I don?t like it one bit. Find a way to build the outlets into the player without compromising is size!!! Its just one more thing I have to keep up with.
    SOFTWARE / COMPUTER INTERFACE:
The last time I dealt with Creative?s software is when I had the Micro. It was clunky but functional. I like what they have done this time around. Still the familiar software but more organized. My only problem is when syncing. I edited an id3 tag on my computer and synced the library again. The software failed to sync the song, listing it as an error. The only way to correct this was to delete the song from the player and re-sync it.
    ZEN CAST ORGANIZER NOTE:
<SPAN> Creative, I say this with the best intentions not to be taken the wrong way. You guys need to scrap the current beta software and go back to the drawing board. Do you guys even realize the potential you have with ZCO? First off, when using the sync organizer, it works, but it can't handle video. It is ridiculously slow when handling video. The syncing software in explorer works a lot better. And then ZCO doesn?t show all of the podcasts available on ZenCast. It brings up internet explorer. What you guys need to do, is go back to the drawing board and design software that expertly organizes my entire media library with extreme simplicity. Have a section for music, pictures, video, and zen/pod casts. The Music section can have the option of connecting to an online music store, the video section can have the option of connecting to an online video store, and the ZenCast, to to the Zencast website, where you can easily subscribe to any zencast<SPAN> without bringing up the browser.
<SPAN> Lets say you guys strike a deal with?.say?..NBC. and NBC makes its episodes of ?Book of Daniel? available on the Zen video store. I should be able to purchase a season pass, and every time I sync my player, it will automatically download and/or sync the latest episode.<SPAN> The possibilities are endless!!!
    BUGS:
I have only noticed two bugs with this player. It seems that the Vision:m has an obsessi've compulsi've need to display album art for every song played. Even songs with no album art associated with them. Since my library is organized by genre and not by album, the player simply picks another album art from the folder ad displays that art for a song with no album art. Creative please fix this because its annoying. Also, one almost unnoticeable bug. The ?song time? count at the bottom of the progress indicator in the ?Now Playing? screen seems to have a hard time counting seconds in some songs. Its too slow and eventually catches up. Then counts regularly, and speeds p again. At first I thought the problem was with VBR mp3?s but it does it with regular 28 kbit rates.
Overall Creative has built a very good player and is currently the best out there. I was a fan of the micro and am now A HUGE fan of this one. This player has yet to crash since I have had it, considering that the micro crashed 3 times by this point of my having one. In fact, this looks to be the most stable player I?ve owned as well. I want to personally thank the Creative development for making a player so superior to anything else out there and at such a competiti've price. I will stomp for your company and brand every chance I get. But You have to meet me half way. Outside the Geek world, your brand is barely recognized. You need to set up a huge base of operations in the US and heavily promote your brand. Not just in magazines and one or two city billboards, but on constant TV commercials, get some music artists on TV promoting your player. Come on guys, really show Apple that you are serious about taking them on. I realize that this costs money to do, but you have to spend money to make money right?
Below is my Firmware Wish List I prioritized them starting with the most important thing. Please try to get to some of these issues.
    <SPAN>-<SPAN> fix album art bug
<SPAN>-<SPAN> make a main menu option for Zen cast. This shouldn?t be in the video folder.
<SPAN>-<SPAN> Add the ability to browse by title in the Genre folder.
<SPAN>-<SPAN> Add support for .mov format to video please.
<SPAN>-<SPAN> USB On the Go would be a nice addition as well
<SPAN>-<SPAN> Add the ability to randomly select a new background from a pre selected group of photos every time the player is turned on or each day.
<SPAN>-<SPAN> SRS if possible.<SPAN> It sounds wonderful on other players.<SPAN>
<SPAN>-<SPAN> Make side scroll pad buttons to be used for navigating menu system.
<SPAN>-<SPAN> A small game or two wouldn?t hurt, but add more coolness to it.
    Thank you for listening

wow, very nice review Makes me want to get a vision for myself.

I would love that feature. I can't stand useing my computer with a single wall paper anymore (I have 500 anime pics that i rotate between every 2 mins ) If you could make the vision rotate background every x minutes or every time the player is turned on, it would be totally amazeningly sweet!!!! (i might have to go out and buy one then :P)
I just hope that creative has better firmware support with the vision than they have had with the touch.
    Once again, great review

Just wanted to mention - I bought the IR Remote thinking to make the player useful without navigation keys. Now I feel like I wasted more money instead of shifting to some other player by some other company with better customer service.

  • A Petition to ask Creative to update the firmware of the Zen Touch to Include EAX capabiliti

<SPAN>Hi. I have been looking for a new hard dri've MP3 player and am thinking about getting the Zen Touch. But I was unhappy that creative removed the EAX functions that were in their other players. I will be sending this to creative to show them that people do like EAX in the player. If you would like to help me with this you can post and leave your name. Thanks! This was taken off of the creative Zen Extra?s website describing EAX: <SPAN>Customize Your Audio Playback with Innovati've EAX? • Full revision list of the Zen Micro's firmware?

/ I've been digging up various firmwares, and I'll be honest and say that because I use an AC Adaptor that 2.2.02 and ..0 are not in my best interests. While I have no tested whether .02.05 retains charge over time I will probably do so tomorrow. I'd like to know the full history of the device so I know where to stand on this. I like to have the 4 hour standby, but not the 'shorter' charge span simply because all Creative did was drop the peak voltage from 4.9V (Li-Po can take up to 4.235V) to 4.2V. Granted the slope of the charging curve gets very flat at that level, but I do feel that it is best to inform geeks so they know what to expect.
    Version (Recovery Mode version)
    ..0 (0.0.65)
    2.2.02 (0.0.65)
.0.02 (0.0.63) (Pulled off due to complaints)
    .02.05 (0.0.58)
    2.00.2 (Cannot be installed)
I know I missed a few, but because the Zen Micro is past its life cycle I doubt there will be any customizations to the device.

    what problems?
Spending time on a support forum like this, that covers the full gamut of the customer base, you are going to see probably 80% of the posts from folks having problems ranging from minor pilot error to real hardware failure. The 20% with tips, kudos etc are all in the minority and will not be very visible.
Creative has probably sold over 5 million Micro's since inception. There are definitely going to be problems with that many units in the general population. And some of the problems have been real issues such as the battery drain and the issue of headphone jacks. The latest firmware v . has fixed the battery problem, and on the 3 Micros in our household we are all seeing over hours playback time, excellent battery hold time, good charging characteristics etc etc. The headphone jack issue seems to have become a lot less of a topic the past month or so. Noting that Creative sold probably about .5 million of the earliest Micros, and these were the units that seemed to have headphone jacks go bad, if at all, all the later products may have enough of a redesign that the jacks are OK. Certainly we are fine over here with the new revisions.
The pluses of the Micro are many, and the diminuti've size and excellent UI makes using this player a pleasure. Audio quality is excellent, and other than sheer output power is right up there with the JB3 (IMO the best ever mp3 player - irregardless of brand).
Hope this rambling note can help you with your decision.

  • What kind of Headphones are included with Zen Mik

I was wondering about buying a Mp3-Player a long time, and finally decided that Zen Mikro would be the best choice to make.
There is no information about the kind of headphones who are included in the package, and knowing the quality of the Headphones is essential for me, in fact.
So, can anyone here tell me how the headphones are? Are they loud enough? Do they have a full-bass support? Does Zen Mikro have different sound-presets (bass/treble adjustion)?
I am still walking around with an stone-old Sony Discman (unbreakable, perfect, but no Mp3 ) and I have old Sony-Headphones who are really superb, but they are also patched after several accidents.
So, are the Creative-Headphones usefull, or do I have to buy some new ones from Sony?
    Thanks for every answer...

With the Zen Micro, you get what Creative calls "High Fidelity Earphones." They are Creative earbuds that are pretty comfortable as far a earbuds go. The sound quality on the headphones are above better than average. The range on the phones are really good. You get most of the low bass beats and most of the very high tones. If you are an audiophile then you may not appreciate the quality of the earbuds. But for most they offer mediocre satisfaction.
The Zen lets you choose from about half a dozen EAX EQ settings that lets you customize the sound of your audio. If none of those satisfy your tastes, then you can create your own custom setting by playing around with the different frequencies to tweak it to pure audio satisfaction. It can come in pretty handy sometimes. What also helps is the sound quality produced by the player itself is second to none.
    Hope this hel
    ps.

  • Thoughts on new mp3 player "Zen&qu

I love the whole design/interface and I'm sure will continue to provide great video playback, music quality with customizable EQs, and good battery life. MY only issue is the space. I will definitely miss out on the 30gig hd space of the creative zen vision m's (I wanted to buy it, but it's not being sold anywhere). I think it was a mistake to discontinue it because people are still willing to buy. I don't mind the bulkiness of it compared to the ipod video because it excels at everything else.
I guess flash dri'ves are easier to work with for creative (Cnet says that Creative isn't making anymore hard dri've players).
So far the only creative mp3 player i've owned is the creative zen micro (5 gigs) so I was hoping for more space than 8 gigs (since i'll be watching some videos too).

No more hard-disk based players from Creative?
Well, with all the problems their hard disk players are facing, I don't blame them for making that decision. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones with a wonderful 30GB ZVM. 9 Months and still ticking beautifully, although I do admit that syncing is a pain in the ass sometimes as Window$ Media Player would randomly do stupid things like upload the same song twice into the player when I change album or artist name (I make stupid typos like that sometimes, or it would be because the FreeDB/CDDB/Windows Media Online entry has typos), and think that a file has already been uploaded previously even though it's already been deleted. Then again, that would be M$/WMP's fault.
Anyway, given how the price of flash memory has dropped, I think we would once more be seeing 30GB devices from Creative in the market in the near future. And they would not be as sensiti've to shocks, bumps and drops that plague any hard disk based players.
Psst, Creative, now that the product's abandon ware, care to tell us how to upgrade our 30GB ZVMs to 60GB? or enable USB host? Message Edited by RAMChYLD on 09-03-20072:9 AM

  • Zen Firmware wishl

Ok I just got the new Zen yesterday which I absolutely love.So I decided to make my own little firmware wishlist. You can add to it if you want and I'll edit my thread. I realize some are more realistic than others, but they are all possible. I have tried to put them in fitting categories so their not all jumbled up and confusing. Also tell me if I have the same idea twice, or one thats in the wrong category, because some I just copied and pasted. Applications- Text (could be a main menu like music, video etc or be in the extras menu)- Calculator (could be under extras menu)- Flash Games (under extras menu with games like solitaire, pacman, asteroids, sudoku etc...)- Notepad (it already has one, when you go under system and change the 'my player' setting, it comes up with a virtual keyboard, also when you do a search for music, so why not use that same idea for a notepad app. ) Customization - Ability perhaps via Zen Explorer to customize the ID3 tag behavior. - Ability to rename music(like the title, album, and artist. I mean you can already delete them, why not edit the names?) - Allow adding, removing, editing of radio presets. I want to select a station ID even if the tuner can't get a good bead on it. (Radio is GREAT). Want to remove a station not just clear it out. The player should skip the blank channels. - Ability to move files from one folder to another - Being able to set a 'timeout' on the screen without having to use the hold switch. - Ability to navigate music in folders like how you can in pictures - Edit Tags on WMF. Genre, name, artist. I hate having to make the fixes in my pc, delete off device and resync - Ability to turn off the screen when docked (my creative V plus does it so why not the zen?) - More color themes (like the color the cursor you use to navigate with, so far only yellow, orange, purple, and green exists. I would like red, black, blue, white, etc. navigation lines) - Option to manually set Mono/Stereo in the FM-radio Codec Support- Ogg and Flac codec(I don't really care about this as I mainly use mp3 and wma, but I know some people would like it)- VGA Resolution video playback support- - Inlcude the h264 codec as well as support for mp4 format
General/Other- Ability to seek to a certain timeframe of the song/video without having to click and hold (you can make the ?seek to option in the menu to ask for set time intervals like 2min., 5min., 0 min., 20 min., etc. - Make ?random play? MORE RANDOM (I hear some songs more often then others)- Being able to resume from where you last paused a track if the player turns off. - UMS - USB mass storage.- Continue radio playback when using other applications.- Gapless playback (no pause between tracks)- Have an arrow or higlight text of the song your playing in the song list/album list/playlist etc...- Ability to zoom pictures up to 200% (eg 25%, 50%, 00%, 50%, 200% and not just one level)- Listen to radio anywhere in the menu (while viewing pic etc.) SD CARD FIRMWARE WISHLIST- Merge SD library with internal- Bookmarking in the SD card- More control over playmode and ability to set playlists from media files on the SD card- Don't cancel/remove/stop now playing when entering SD card
Message Edited by Warhawk on 2-03-200705:22 AM

I also have a problem with the album art like the first poster. It seems that all my songs in one folder have all the same cover art eventhough the songs where a mix of artists to begin with, can creative help me on this
What I would like to see is in continuous patches:
    1. Fix bugs if any should arise
    2. Ability to turn off the screen when docked (my creative V plus does it so why not the zen )
    3. Ability to rename music (title, album, genere, artist, etc.)
    4. Ability to seek to a certain timeframe of the song/video without having to click and hold (you can make the seek to option in the menu to ask for set time intervals like 2min., 5min., 0 min., 20 min., etc.
    5. A way to add album art
    6. Ability to navigate music in folders like how you can in pictures
    7. More codec support (currently even my divx files have to be converted to wma to play)
    8. Make random play MORE RANDOM (I hear some songs more often then others)
    9. Allow adding, removing, editing of radio presets, A menu to jump to a presets would be nice too
    0. Bookmarking in the SD card
    1. Ability to move files from SD card to onboard memory and vice versa
    2. Ability to move files from one folder to another
    3. Simple games like on the iPod
    4. Calculator
    5. A notepad to write in
    6. More color themes (like the color the cursor you use to navigate with, so far only yellow, orange, purple, and green exists. I would like red, black, blue, white, etc. navigation lines)

  • Petition: EAX in Zen Mi

No EAX features can be found in Zen Micro. Hope that Creative can put such features in Zen Mirco by firmware upgrading. Let's join me to fight for this ! If you also want to be enjoyed with such features, please reply this post to show to Creative that we need such features. Thanks for supporting.Message Edited by Catherina-CL on 0--2005 0:03 PM

Simply speaking, music playback can be enhanced by adjusting customizable 3D spatialization effects & EQ if EAX is included. For details, please kindly refer to http://eax.creative.com/eax.asp . Thanks for all supporting.

  • What was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before M

I would like to know what was the last firmware version for the Zen Micro before the MTP firmware?
Please make sure you are 00% on this.
    Thankyou.

I think it does, but I'm not sure; since I wanted MTP, I only used .x firmware long enough to save the original Creative test files (with MediaSource, not ZMME) before upgrading to 2.x. And yes, I had to li've with 2..02's shorter battery life until 2.20.05 came out.
May I ask why you want to go back to .x firmware? The only thing that will get you is the ability to use it with Win98SE/2000/Me--but only if you can install Creative drivers on every PC you use it with. MTP requires WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0, but doesn't need any Creative software at all to work. (Microsoft has made an MTP driver for Win98SE/2000/Me, but it requires customization and may not be supported by other software. I'm tinkering a bit with the customization part right now.)
There are other pitfalls in changing Micro firmware families, in either direction--you'll lose all the files on your Micro, you'll have to install a different ZMME (and I've heard non-MTP ZMME isn't quite as full-featured as MTP ZMME), and you'll need a new plug-in for MediaSource to work.

  • Can't get Zen kernel to build (Solved)

So i've been trying on and off to build zen-git from the aur, and it always stops compiling at the same point. No matter if i customize the config or not. Here's where it stops...
    CC [M] fs/xfs/linux-2.6/xfs_xattr.o
    CC [M] fs/xfs/support/debug.o
    CC [M] fs/xfs/support/uuid.o
    LD [M] fs/xfs/xfs.o
    LD fs/built-in.o
==> ERROR: Failed... Your source tree might be broken. Run 'make mrproper' in src/kernel26zen-stable to clean it up
    ==> ERROR: Build Failed.
    Aborting...
I can't pinpoint which module is causing it. I have talked to the guys in #zen-sources but they told me to rebase the tree as it was bugged. First off, i'm not sure if they just meant to fetch it again, since i have done that and keep getting the same issue. And i've been really wanting to try this kernel as there was talk on Gentoo foums of it solving i/o issues.
Can anybody help? I'm still a bit of a noob at building kernels, well the ones from aur anyway...
Oh, and i am using the stable branch.

Hmm i don't have any makeflags set in mkinitcpio.conf. Only in makepkg.conf, which are:
    CARCH="x86_64"
    CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
#-- Exclusive: will only run on x86_64
    # -march (or -mcpu) builds exclusively for an architecture
    # -mtune optimizes for an architecture, but builds for whole processor family
    CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe"
    CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
    #LDFLAGS=""
#-- Make Flags: change this for DistCC/SMP systems
    MAKEFLAGS="-j3"
I'll try rebuilding again to see if there are any errors further up.
