Customize countdown in Print to Video--How to??
FCP 4.5HD.
Ted.

If you didn't use black after the couple of frames of the "2," what would you put between there and the starty of program?
You CAN change the black if you want... but there's a reason for :02 of black:
It's expected and necessary in live television.
Black is necessary on the tape in order to be able to go from "black to black" as when going into a commercial break.
------- stop here if you don't want the background on why---
The tape is cued to a specific number of seconds ahead of sound and then rolled when the director calls a "roll tape" or "Roll VTR _" cue. The countdown rolls by in the monitor, and the director and technical director can see when picture's up, then take the video.
There's usually a fade to black out of program and then eithe a cut or fade to the next video/audio source.
A similar process happens at the end of the commercial. At a specific number of seconds before the end of commercial #1, commercial #2 is rolled... then taken... and so forth if things are coming off of separate tape machines.
Black at the head and tail of spots lets a simple routing switcher make the change from playback device to playback device.
In the "olden days" before automated tape playback machines, commercials were either on film reels (edited together into clusters with a countdown at the beginning and black leader on the tail,) on a videotape that was edited together in a similar fashion... or... (sometimes dangerously so) rolled from four or five different tape machines "live" on the air.
If things were rolled "live," one right after another, I'm sure that there were a lot of praying break operators in stations where equipment was old, maintainence was lax and Murphy was a regular visitor.
The countdown and black on each commercial was a necessary timing tool in order to get through the break cleanly. I can tell you from experience that NOT having them made life verrry dicey when it came to getting in and out of program elements cleanly.
The RCA TCR 100 Cart machine and the Ampex model that did the same thing) would play all the elements in a break and do the switching in between... simplifying the process... until there was a breakdown of the machine, and then you should have seen the scramble in Master Control and/or the tape room.
Its a lot different these days if the station or network airing the commercials plays spots (commercials) off a file server... it's a different game entirely.
Everything is automated and "trimmed" when it's transferred (or start and finish marked on the file).
In that case. the countdown is not needed to get the commercial on the air... but is included to ensure that there's a reference for where the spot actually begins. The :02 of black is still included, since stations traditionally fade or cut to black between spots.
The countdown itself was designed to allow theater projectionists make smooth changes from reel to reel as a movie was projected on the screen.
The projectionist would thread the film on the incoming projector so that the first "10" was in the gate.
As the outgoing reel ended... little cue dots in the upper right hand corner of the screen "cued" the projectionist when to roll the upcoming reel... and then a specific number of seconds later—ten in our example—a second set of cue dots (four frames worth) on the screen would cue him to hit the changeover button, opening a douser on the incoming projector and closing one on the outgoing projector... and swapping audio sources at the same time.
The countdown performs a similar function in live television: The tape is cued to a specific number of seconds ahead of sound and then rolled when the director calls a "roll tape" or "Roll VTR _" cue. The countdown rolls by in the monitor, and the director and technical director can see when picture's up, then take the video.
You'd think that woould be the case for movie packages and syndicated television shows, right?

  • Printing To Video Nested Sequences

This is a basic question I'm sure, but I just need to know...
My first time nesting sequences. When I print to video, how do I make sure that only those nesting sequences get printed? In other words, on my timeline I have my 7 original sequences, and then a master sequence that contains all 7.
Am I correct that by opening that master sequence and then going about the print to video function, only that master sequence will print?

The master sequence will print with the nests that it contains. Make sure you render and mixdown each nest as well as the master sequence.

  • No audio after I Print to Video...help!

After I have printed to video there is no audio attached to my edited sequences, even though during playback in the timeline there is obviously audio. When I print to video how do I make sure the audio goes along with it?

Monitor audio from the deck you are outputting to. Make SURE audio is being sent to the deck...if via firewire, make sure in the Audio/Video settings you have audio out set to firewire.

  • How to allow domain users to customize  Adobe PDF  printer page size in Printer Preferences

    Hi
I am able to customize  Adobe PDF  printer page size in Printer Preferences in admin login but not able to customize  Adobe PDF  printer page size in domian users login...
can I have a solution to customize  Adobe PDF  printer page size in domin user login

WOW! I was amazed to see that within minutes of posting my initial thread, I tried something that works.
Apparently, the only way is will actually convert is if you select the regular Print option in the File tab. Then, change the Printer to Adobe PDF & the Paper Size to 11x17. It also worked for 36"x48" becuase I created a custom size named "Poster", so I changed the paper size to Poster & it worked!
I hope this helps someone. I searched for an existing forum on this issue off & on for MONTHS before creating this thread. If anyone has any suggestions why the Adobe PDF tab /PDF Maker wouldn't work, I'd like to know.

  • How do I print to video on a Sony PD 150?

I can't figure it out! The timeline displays on the LCD monitor of the Sony camera. I can hear the sound through the camera's headphones. But when I choose File > Print to Video... and then choose OK, it tells me "Ready for playback, click OK to start recording media onto deck".
I click OK, but then I get "Unable to perform edit operation. The tape appears to be write protected or the deck may be in Local mode."
Does anybody know what I need to do? The tape is not write protected, but the camera belongs to a friend and I don't know anything about Local mode.
    Please help. Thanks!

On the PD 150, you close the outside door without first closing the tape carriage on the inside. By doing so, the inside metallic carriage that physically holds the tape doesn't quiiiiite click into place (although the outer door has clicked shut). But since you heard the click, you assumed you were fine. And then you pulled your hair out for half an hour.

  • How do I print to video  HD footage captured from HD Canon HD20?

So far I've not seen any solutions on the discussion threads for those of us who are unsuccessful in printing to video via firewire back to our HD cameras for archive or display on a HD display via HDMI.
I have combed the posts in several places for settings, and believe mine are correct. FCP
seems happy to export. My camera is obviously not recognized so that it can record.
This seems to be a serious, major, and wide-spread flow in FCP's current work flow, or
am I "unclear" on the concept? Thanks in advance! Apple folks... are you there??

Well, I just BOUGHT this camera yesterday (HV20) and...well...I haven't printed back to tape yet. Don't think I plan to. I'll be making DVDs and outputting to higher end HD formats...like DVCPRO HD or...or...well, that's probably about it.
I don't know what the issue people have with Canon is. I have a GL-1...never had an issue shooting and capturing with it. I pulled the HV20 out of the box, switched it to 24f mode, shutter to 48. Shot for 10 min, captured it without an issue (HDV 1080i60 Firewire Basic) and even captured ONE clip...the camera was started and stopped a dozen times.
But, I haven't printed to tape. I just wanted to say that I have had a positive experience with the camera.

  • How To Print To Video?

I have a cheap PAl video camera I need to put my video on to submit to a Film Festival and when I capture through the camera (I shot the footage on a different PAL Camera)it captures but when I try to print to video it doesn't work. What can I do? Thanks!

    What seems to happen?
What camera is it? Try switching to FW Basic (not sure that really helps, but sometimes magically it does).
    Have you done this before?
Will it CRASH RECORD directly from the timeline?
OH -- here's an important question:
When you play the timeline with the camera connected... are you able to see it on the camera's display? (Make sure external video is set to ALL FRAMES (VIEW menu))
    Good luck,

  • Activate recording deck automatically during print to video?

Hey all, here is my question.
Up till now I have always just prepped a file to print to video than manually started my camera or Sony deck to start recording and then clicked start on FCP and recorded the video to tape.
I have a client that now wants my video to start at EXACTLY the 60 second mark. Is there a way to set up FCP to trigger the deck to start recording as it starts playing the color bars, title, countdown etc? So that the time code on the tape starts at exactly the moment the first color bars start?
Then I can set up the color bars, title, countdown to total up to sixty seconds and have the video begin right there.
    Is my question clear?
I want bar code to start at 00.00.00.00;00
and I want the final countdown to end at 00.00.00.60;00 and the video to begin. Make sense? Is there a way to get FCP to start deck recording?
    Thanks in advance.

That would be Edit to Tape, not Print to Video.
No. You do NOT want timecode to start at 00:00:00:00... How will you pre-roll? One common layout is tape black starting at 58:15:00, Bars and Tone for 60 seconds, 20 seconds of black, 8 second countdown, with a 2-pop and 2 seconds of black to have program starting at exactly 01:00:00;00
    Make sense?
    Patrick
EDIT: BTW, Edit to tape allows you to Black the tape. If using RS-422 deck control, you can set the starting timecode in the dialog. If FW, you'll have to set it in the deck...

  • Print to Video takes over monitor

I recently started to back up all my videos on to DV tapes. When I print to tape my monitor mirrors the playback. My DV deck has a monitor connected so i can see playback there and don't want my Mac taken over by the export. I found a setting in the "Audio/Video Settings" under the Final Cut Pro tab that allows me to turn off mirroring, but the screen still goes black. I've also hooked up a second monitor in hopes that the mirroring output would take over that screen, but no. So if anyone could direct me to some settings that I could switch this, your awsome. I'm using Final Cut Pro 6.0.1

How do I make the print to video faster with these options checked?
    OK...I am biting my tongue
If I have to insert the color bars and slate into the timeline, how do I get the conventional color bars footage with hight pitch sound without recapturing one of the dubs?
    Bithing myth thongue.
In your case printing to video doesn't take longer with the slate checked?
    It is beginning to bleed....
How do you drag your sequence from the browser to the print to video video?
    Oww....
Pat is talking about the EDIT TO TAPE window. Print to video doesn't have this option. And if you are trying to deliver a tape for broadcast, and you are NOT using edit to tape and are using Print to Video instead...how on earth are you getting proper timecode on this tape? Because bars and tone typically start at 58:30:00...go for a minute...then black for a few seconds...then a slate with program info...then more plack (perhaps a countdown)...then show starts at 1:00:00:00 on the nose. What are you doing?
And seriously...adding bars and tone means outputting takes longer? Uhhh, YEAH. If you add 60 seconds of footage to your timeline, the duration increases by 60 seconds. That is typically how things work. Adding bars, tone, black and a slate should add about 2 minutes to your cut. because you need 30 seconds of black BEFORE the bars and tone too...typically. Export faster? No...can't output faster than real time.
How do you get BARS & TONE without recapturing? In the Viewer, below where you look at your footage, there is a drop down menu with the letter "A." Click on that and you will see BARS AND TONE for a variety of footage formats.

  • Problem with Print to Video in FCP 6.0

In the past I have been able to print to video with FCP 5, now not working with FCP 6. My Sony HVR A1U is seen by FCP, I can log & capture no problem. When I go to print to video, the sequence does not show up on my camera LCD and I cannot capture it. I have checked the system profiler and under firewire the camera is listed. In the print to video window I have checked Automatically Start Recording, but this has no effect.
    Thank you for your advice

Just curious. How do you get your computer too see the HVR. I am using I movie HD and it does not see anything. Is there a camera setup procedure? I looked at the vague manual which was no help.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Print to video HDV not working

I'm having problems with printing my HDV project to the camera.
On a DV project it works, but when I open my HDV project I cannot choose any external video options,
I can log and capture, but not the other way.
I read that the edit to tape function does not work in HDV, but printing to video should.
    Just don't know how
    Maybe someone can help me
    Thank you!

If it's a sony camera involved, select the "Easy Setup" that matches the sequence setting... like 1080i for example, and see if this doesn't clear things up. Make sure the camera is in VTR mode as well. If it's not a Sony camera check the settings it uses here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php

  • FCP7  print to video doesn't work on one timeline but does on another., FCP7  print to video doesn't work on one timeline but does on another.

I have a project which I captured from .mov and want to print to video : dvd.  The image shows on the monitor but does not work to capture.  The other sequence that is open does run to capture.  What's wrong and how do I fix it.
    Thanks
BTW, we do this a lot!!!  This glitch is new.  And yes we have rendered the sequence.

Print to Video only works with some Sequence settings via Firewire to the recording device.  Are your Sequence settings for both Sequences the same?

  • Project won't print to video

    Hi,
I have FCE2. I'm trying to print my project to video. I've used both Sony and Canon Mini DV camcorders. When I hit "Ok to start recording media onto deck", the project plays back ontop of a black screen on my computer and my camera is rolling, it says "rec", there is timecode moving, but when I play it back, nothing is there. It does not record anything.
When I do the same thing in iMovie, it DOES work! I can see what I'm recording in the camcorder and it DOES print to video and it DOES playback after I'm done.
What am I doing wrong in FCE2?
    Thanks,
    Squibb

Please give full specs for your system, computer, drives, devices, how everything's connected, settings on the camera in record mode, settings in FCE. Trash your preferences, reboot, connect everything correctly, launch the application. Does it see the camera? If not, do not proceed to PTT.

  • Can Print to Video HDV sequence

Hello, I am trying to export an HDV sequence to a miniDV tape for broadcast. I am using a Sony GV-HD700 tape deck. I am using Print to Video and it just wont work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I am having this same problem, and need help urgently. Does anyone know how to resolve this? I can control the deck through FCP and the FireWire cable, and can even initiate automatic recording from FCP, but once it starts playing the content the deck freezes and does not actually record anything.

  • Print to video / HDV sequence

I am about to export a hdv sequence to my z1.
I have to make a master tape for broadcasting.
I normally export my commercial hdv work to mpeg2 and make a dvd....
To make a master tape for tv broadcast I need to make a dv camtape.
How do I create a dv cam master with the right 16;9 aspect ratio and the leat quality loss?
I understood that I can not use edit to tape. So print to video is my only option....
I thought of first rendering the hdv sequence to an appropriate format.
Which format should I choose. Is pro res an option?
    Any expert out there.
    Advice hightly appreciated.
    thnx
    xx
    Jane

I think what you should do is put the HDV sequence in a DV sequence, then after rendering just lay it out to tape. You could also send it to compressor for the tranfer, but don't think there's much difference if any, in quality. It should end up letterboxed.
