Customize default front panel settings

How do I set a default color for the front panel?

From the Tools menu, select options and then colors. Unselect the "Use Default Colors" box and you can make the default front panel any color you want. One thing that I always do is set the coercion dot color to red so that it is easier for me to see when data conversion is taking place.

    Hi,
You're right. This is an otion in the development environment.Go to Operate>>Make Current Values Default. That will make all the values of your front panel controls the default values.
You can also individually set each control default value by right clicking>>Data Operations>>Make Current Value Default.

  • Front Panel values lost upon save

I am just taking my first steps with Labview. I have created a couple of VIs and have managed to get I2C communication happening through a third party DAQ box. The problem I am having is fairly simple, I am trying to save VIs but they are not retaining the values I have entered in the Front Panel.
I have a top level VI and a couple of subVIs that contain lower level functionality for sending I2C messages. The top level VI has a couple of value controls that let me enter device addresses, etc. It also has groups of toggle switches that I am using to set bits that I later combine into bytes of data that I can send.
But whenever I save a VI the front panel settings are defaulting to some other value. I dont understand it, I just want the value box to hold the number I entered. And more importantly in this case I need the array of toggle switches to stay where I set them so when I run it again the same bytes are transmitted. But each time I open the VI, the toggle switches are all greyed out and set to 0.
Is this normal? How do I get controls to retain there values? Is there a design reason they do not?
    Thanks for any advice.

You may also consider initializing these values from a file. There are lots of posts which go into details about how you can do this. This is a much more flexible and maintainable approach then relying on the default value of a control.

  • Save and recall front panel configuration on FPGA

First of all, I am a first time user of Labview.  The application is with an FPGA on a NI-9146 board.
My question is, I would like to save the front panel settings when I exit the application, then recall them the next time the application is started.
Seems to be a few ways to do this but are not supported with the FPGA module.
The application is fairly straight forward timing and the Windows host PC will provide a GUI to the operator.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but this task is more tedious then it needs to be.
The normal way of doing this on the FPGA is to plop down a FPGA read function for every control on the FPGA front panel, then write them to a file.  Probably using an OpenG function, but really something like the binary write would work if you don't expect to add/remove items.  Then when the application starts you need to reverse the process ploping down a FPGA write function for every control.
Now there is a slighly easier way that in theory works in a limited use case.  The FPGA VI when running is just like a normal VI and you can get a reference to it.  Here you could run the OpenG Write Panel to INI, and Read Panel from INI.  These are two canned functions that save tons of time.  Now the reason this might not work for most FPGA developers is because in the end, the goal is to not see the FPGA VI and instead only run the bit file and call into the FPGA using the hooks NI provides.  It sounds like you are going to have the VI shown anyway so this method may actually work for you.
It does kinda suck and I think it would be nice if NI had a way to read and write all FPGA front panel controls at once for things like this.

How to save the front-panel controllers' settings to different files and retrieve it later?
What I've archived is the "Save Settings" function, but when trying to "Reload Settings", I can only retrieve the saved data to front-panel indicators, but not the controllers!
Can anybody give me some advises?

    Hi
Just write the retrieved data to a local variable (but make it writable first) or property node of the controls.

  • Front panel printing settings

    Hey!!
i wana to ask that are there any settings for printing the front panel window??? like describing certain area to print . I actually tried to print it by selecting PRINT WINDOW from files menu but it printed a page without any objects on it??

    Hi ssddii,
If you select File>>Print from within your VI, it should give you options for printing the front panel.  Among these options, you should be prompted to select the VI, choose the portion you want to print (whole front panel, visible portion only, etc), the destination, and set general print settings.
I hope that helps a little,

  • Front Panel of select VI's pop up upon start-up

I have a main VI which organizes about 200 test cases(also VI's). However when I load the Main VI, about 50-60 of the front panels from different VI's load. I've checked most of the settings and can't figure this it out. Is there anything I'm missing. Someone suggested a VI Server...what's that? Is the only way to have the front panel load one at a time, to make the VI's load dynamically?

Let me see if I understand your problem correctly. Are you saying that when you load your main VI, but before you run it, the subVI's front panels are displayed? If that's the case, there's a couple of ways that this could be happening. First, in the VI that has the subVI, right click on the subVI and select SubVI Node Setup. Make sure that Open Front Panel When Loaded is not checked. Second, open the subVI itself and go to VI Properties>Window Appearance. If the Custom radio button is selected, click on the Customize button and see if Show Front Panel When Loaded is checked.

  • Can't scan from 5610 all in one front panel

I have an HP5610 all in one installed on my Dell Vostro 200 with E6550 dual core processor, XP SP3 home OS. I noticed the problem when I tried to scan from the front panel of my 5610 and the orange exclamation light started blinking. The display said "No Scan Options". I ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor and it said to set the front panel scan destinations. I selected the default settings and closed the HP Direc.exe. When I opened the HP Direc.exe and looked for the panel destination that I set, I saw that they did not save. I can scan just fine using the HP software and have been doing so for many years. I now am wondering if I have had this issue all along, especially since I never remember trying to scan from the front panel of my 5610 until the other day.
I have done just about everything the Printing and Scan Doctor told me to do. I have shut down my 5610, unplugged it for several minutes, plugged it back in, removed the all in one program and reinstalled from the HP website. What is strange...I have the 5610 software installed on a Dell 3000 Dimension I have in a home network and it works perfectly. I'm seriously thinking about moving the 5610 in the room with my Dimension 3000 and buying a (print only) printer for my Vostro 200. I can work around this but I can't stand to have something not work correctly with a very good computer. Please, no comments on my preferred operating system. I am not upgrading, and as I said, this all in one works perfectly with a PC built in 2004. And contrary to belief, I am still getting security updates on a biweekly basis from Microsoft. One day last week I got 8 in one day. Thanks all for all of your excellent help!

  • Japanese font on Front Panel not working

    Hi,
I am new on using LV and finds out that whenever I type a Japanese character, it shows garbage text.
    System:
    Windows 7 Pro 32bit SP1
    Labview 2013
    Problem:
Whenever I key in Japanese character, the result is garbage, however when I tried to export the VI, and when I opened the txt file, the character is written correctly.
Seems like only in the front panel the characters are displaying incorrectly.
I've attached the Locale settings and also the garbage in the front panel for reference, as well as the printscreen of the export txt.
    Any solution for this one?

    Hi,
There are several ways to display foreign languages in LabVIEW front panel.
    1. set “UseUnicode=True” in the LabVIEW.ini file.
    2.  use the app locale utility from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13209). With this tool you can run LabVIEW (or builded app) under different locales without changing system locale in Control Panel.
    3. By default UseUnicode in the LabVIEW.ini file is disabled.  Remove it or make it False if you've added the UseUnicode.
Then go to control panel>> Region and Language >> Administrative tab.  Then in language from non-Unicode programs, select the language you want to use.  With UseUnicode False, Windows will see LabVIEW and a non-Unicode program and enable this feature.
Maybe you can refer to the links below.

  • VI locks up when front panel is displayed

    Hi
Firstly, I apologise if I’ve sent this to the wrong forum – I’m not sure if this is a TestStand or Labview related issue or possibly both.
I have a test procedure developed using Labview 7.1 and TestStand 3.1. It’s run from TestStand’s Operator Interface VI (full version), and executes about a dozen TestStand sequences in turn which call lower level VIs that perform the actual tests.
The code was written on a Dell GX240 Pentium 4 PC, with Windows 2000 + SP4 installed and runs without a hitch. However, I also have a second PC, same model & spec, but running Windows XP + SP3 instead of Win2K. I’ve also installed the same versions of Labview & TestStand on it, and copied across all my TestStand sequences & VIs into the same working directory. However, when I run the program on this machine, again using the same Operator Interface, it executes until about half way through and then hangs up.
In several tests, I call up a graphical user interface VI which displays a picture and prompts the operator to click on either a ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ button – the actual text being passed as a parameter. When the lock up occurs, the front panel is displayed, but there’s no picture and the buttons are blank. Up to that point, previous calls to the VI have executed ok.
If I modify the step that causes the problem, to call another VI - for example, a sub VI that doesn’t display a front panel - the new VI executes and the program continues to run. If I then change this VI’s configuration so that it’s front panel is displayed at run time, the problem re-occurs - the front panel outline appears but everything then freezes.
Attempting to close the front panel window, results in either error code –18001 and the message ‘an error occurred accessing the Labview ActiveX automation server’ being displayed or the Windows prompt to close Labview as it’s not responding. Usually, clicking ‘End Program’ causes the PC to crash out & re-boot.
Skipping TestStand sequences, whether they execute the GUI VI or not, just moves the point where the lock up occurs further down the list of tests, to the next step where the GUI VI is called. It’s almost as if something isn’t being closed properly when the program runs, and eventually reaches some limit, but why this doesn’t appear to effect the Windows 2000 PC, I’m at a loss.
    Very much appreciate anyone’s thoughts.
    Thanks
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,
I found a KnowledgeBase article relating to the error you are seeing.
It describes error 18001 "Error occurred accessing LV activeX automation server".
Let me know if this helps you out.
This problem may also be due to how you have configured the Distributed COM (DCOM) settings on your machine. You will need to ensure that your DCOM settings allows the LabVIEW ActiveX Server to be launched and accessed through ActiveX automation. Even Administrator accounts can be denied launch and access permissions. To modify these permissions follow the steps below for Windows XP:
Login to Windows using a UserID that has administrator privileges.
Select Start»Run and enter dcomcnfg.exe. This displays the Component Services dialog window.
Navigate to Component Services»Computers»My Computer and select DCOM Config. Ignore the warnings that may appear.
Right-click on LabVIEW Application, TestStandLVRTS or the name of your LabVIEW ActiveX Server and select Properties to open the LabVIEW Application Properties dialog window. Select the Security tab.
You must give permission to the appropriate users so that they can access the LabVIEW server. You should give everyone access permissions and appropriate users launch permission. Only users who have launch permission will be able to access the server. Add permissions by selecting Customize and Edit for each of the three permission settings and manually adding permissions for each user.
I doubled checked that LabVIEW 7.1 and 3.1 are compatible with windows XP and they are.  Just to make sure, it is 32bit or 64bit you are using?
Let me know how you get on.
    Kind Regards

  • Unexpected effect of Lock Front Panel in Event Structure

I have been using LV intensely for only a short time, although I have dabbled with it many times since its first appearance. The "problem" that I have had may well be the intended behaviour, but it just seems unintuitive to me. I'm writing a small application to take measurements from a USB instrument. I have already written a basic driver for the instrument, which the application calls, and the driver is working as expected. In the application, the user can configure various settings and then click an Execute button to transfer them to the instrument. The click event is handled in an event structure along with other events. Since some of the instrument operations take an appreciable time, the first action that occurs in the click event case is to disable the Execute button using a property node so that further clicks are ignored until the operation completes, at which time the button is re-enabled.
When disabled, the Execute button is grayed out as expected and clicking it has no visual effect. However, it seems that clicks made during the disabled period are still queued and acted upon when the button is re-enabled, causing the operation to be repeated.
It is the solution I have found that seems unintuitive to me. The Lock Front Panel check box was checked (by default) for the click event, and I assumed that this would be the correct setting. However, unchecking the Lock check box actually makes everything worked as expected. Click events occurring during the disabled period are now ignored or discarded. I'm not suggesting that this is a bug, but I'm interested to learn why it happens, if anyone can explain. I have attached a picture of a simplified version of the event case.
    Attachments:
    Sample.png ‏7 KB

I would say what you see is expected behavior, even though it's a bit complicated.
The "Lock front panel until the event case for this event completes" option will only defer clicks and other things generating events until the current event handler completes. So this means that the click is placed in a queue and only evaluated once the event is finished. At this time, the button is no longer disabled, so an event is generated.
When the "Lock front panel until the event case for this event completes" is not checked, the click is immediately evaluated, but it's happening on a disabled control, so it does not generate an event.
    From the LV help:
By default, when an event enters a queue, LabVIEW locks the front panel that contains the object that generated that event. LabVIEW keeps the front panel locked until all Event structures finish handling the event. While the front panel is locked, LabVIEW does not process front panel activity but places those interactions in a buffer and handles them when the front panel is unlocked.
Note If an event case that locks the front panel takes a significant amount of time to execute, consider using the Set Busy function or displaying a dialog box to notify the user that the front panel is locked.

  • Print front panel by clicking on a boolean button

    Hi everyone,
I need that a user can print the front panel just by clicking on a button in the front panel.
Apparently I need to use Report generation ==> Easy print VI panel + a boolean button.
But I have no idea how to make the connections. My code is in a while loop. Where I have to connect the inputs "VI path" or "contents" for example and then how to connect the boolean button ? (I just want to print the front panel)
(I have seen the manuel help on ni.com but it didn't really help me...)
    Thanks for your help
    Best regards
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You just need to wire a Current VI's path to the Easy print VI panel (VI path input). And that's it. It will print the VI front panel on the default printer.
If you can't use the event structure just place a case structure and wire your Print button to the selector. First make it print on the default printer with default settings and then start to play with things such as contents.

  • Show front panels of sub VIs when running a EXE (build application)

I've created a exe file and it works fine. However, it only shows the front panel of main VI and I can not open sub VIs (it looks like they are all hidden). I know it can be done by creating a library file along with this exe file, but that's not what I want. I want to create a single exe file that shows several front panels, and that can be run with run time engine. Is there any way to show front panels of sub VIs by running a exe file?

In the development mode, how are you displaying the front panels? Did you right click on the subVI and select SubVI Node Setup and choose 'Show Font Panel when called/Close afterwards if originallly closed' or did you choose the same options from VI Properties for each subVI. If the second, then the app builder will automatically retain the front panels of the subVI. If you chose the first option or if you are using VI Server to open a front panel, then the default setting in the app builder is to remove the front panels. You would then have to go the VI Setting tab in app builder and edit the settings.

  • Leaving the front panel displayed on a subpanel after stopping

    I have a tab control.
Each tab control has a subpanel.
Each subpanel has a static vi reference attached to it for launching.
I would like the image of the front panel displayed in the subpanel after the program has finished running so that any information that was displayed is still present.
Is there a way to retain all the settings between run's?

When you say settings, do you mean controls? If so, you can right click on them and select Data Operations >> Make Current Value Default. That will keep the settings initialized how ever you set them up.
I believe you can use use the Get Front Panel Image VI Method node, similar to the way to run the VI. You can create one by right clicking on the VI reference wire and selecting Method for VI Class >> Front Panel >> Get Image.
I've attached a code snippet of the node. If you want you can just drag the file into your block diagram and it should turn into code.
