Customize Keyboard Layout

Hello,
I need to use umlauts (German) and the alt + , or cmd + u solutions are not working well for me. What partially works is to use the German keyboard layout which has keys for those letters. However a very annoying thing to term with is that they swapped the y and z letters, and I´m not willing to get used to that. How could I modify/personalize the keyboard layout so to arrange these as in the english keyboard?

Try the US International layout:

  • How can I get Final Cut 7 to remember my customized keyboard layout?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this community, my name is Flavio, from Argentina.
I'm on a Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo 2, using Final Cut 7 and I'm using a customized keyboard layout (1 for zoom in, 2 for zoom out), but everytime I launch the application I have to go to Tools>Keyboard Layout to change it, is there a way to tel the ap to launch that layout almays?
    Thanks!

It works for me without doing anything special.  You might try deleting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
If that doesn't solve it, describe exactly what your doing to customize the keyboard.
I assume if you do a "save keyboard layout" from the tools menu: keyboard layout  after customizing the keyboard and then load keyboard layout after relaunching fcp, that at least works.

  • [SOLVED] After a crash, my languages and keyboard layouts are gone!

So my CPU hanged, I rebooted, unfortunatelly a lot of my personal (and perhaps system) files were corrupted. All my personal GNOME settings were set to default. I had to wipe out the entire ~/.config/dconf folder in order to regain the capability to customize everything again. So all was left behind was my keyboard layout. So I went to `Regions and Languages` and... all but the system language (English) options were gone, including the layouts!
I just reinstalled the groups gnome and gnome-extra, no to avail
    What can I do?
edit: stupid me! The layouts were 'hidden' in the tiny window size of the thing!

  • How to Make a Keyboard Layout for X11/OpenOffice

While OpenOffice has a setting to use standard OS X keyboard layouts, you may find that some of these do not work correctly, especially if deadkeys are involved. In that case you will need to create a new layout in the form of a keymap file, which you place in your home folder and invoke when needed via the command "xmodmap mykeymap" in an xterm (or by putting the same line in some config file).
You keymap file should just contain the minimum necessary modifications of the default X11 map, which you can see by doing the command "xmodmap -pke | less" in an xterm (after making sure the preference item for using OS X layouts is turned off).
Some fiddling with the entries of your file may be necessary, as both X11 and apps that use it have quirks and bugs of various sorts. Below is the file I made to do Vietnamese in OpenOffice as an example:
    keycode 26 = abreve
    keycode 27 = 0x00E2
    keycode 28 = 0x00EA
    keycode 29 = 0x00F4
    keycode 30 = dead_hook
    keycode 31 = dead_grave
    keycode 33 = dead_belowdot
    keycode 34 = dead_tilde
    keycode 36 = dead_acute
    keycode 37 = U0111
    keycode 38 = U01A1
    keycode 41 = U01B0

This is a feature Apple should definitely add customization to on OS X.
You can make custom keyboard layouts that include any characters you want using Ukelele.
    http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?siteid=nrsi&itemid=ukelele
I doubt Apple is going to incorporate this into OS X, but you can suggest it here:

  • Xorg bug: max number of possible keyboard layouts

    Dear forum,
yesterday I installed Archlinux for the very first time on my home notebook.  It was the first time for me that I saw KDE 4 running, too.  After short time I encountered my first problem with that.
It seems to be a bug in the Xorg protocol that limits the total of keyboard layouts to 4 (four).  This, however, used to be circumvented in KDE until version 3.5.10 to allow more layouts, but after they removed their hack (and with it the functionality) it's been reported several times as a bug.  The issue was even introduced to KDE4 as a feature by the kxkb maintainer so I don't expect any progress from this side soon.
So KDE4 was rendered basically useless for me as I need at least 6 different layouts.  I came here to the forums for help because I don't know yet (after one day) what would be the "arch way" of eliminating this so-called feature without breaking my package dependencies.  Two possibilities came in my mind:
1 Downgrade kxkb or whatever causes the problem to the last usable version.
2 Downgrade KDE to the last usable version (that would be 3.5.10).
Third possibility, as I'd like to use the machine for work, would be to install another distro that provides solution no 2.  I hesitate to do this because I picked arch for some reason and would like to become familiar with it.
Any help would be much appreciated; thanks in advance!
    Philipp
EDIT: I thought of a fourth solution that could be any other WM or DE that doesn't restrict itself to Xorg's limits.

    Hi there,
Well if you need high customizability, check out FVWM (I'm using that), *box or awesome. These three are really for powerusers and thus their configuration may be more difficult, but you can do more with them...
In FVWM you can call any scripts you want via keystrokes (I believe in other mentioned WMs it is possible too). My Keboard Layout switching script is really lightwheight and it can store as many keyboard layouts as you want (at least it will cope with your 6 with no difficulties). It may work even in KDE, but you should then create a key binding.
Search in this forum for xkbswitch. There was a discussion before about it.

  • Where are keyboard layout & input method files?

I was using the app "Monolingual" to free up hard drive space and accidentally deleted keyboard layout and input method files. Now I am unable to type or use keyboard commands in any application other than Safari. I have another Mac which I could copy the files from, but I do not know where those files are. I also have the original install discs from my MacBook Pro.
Any advice on how to get my keyboard back in working order?

Might be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
You can customize to eliminate things not needed.

  • I'm trying to install an IPA keyboard layout. Any advice?

I have a MacBook Pro, and as a Phonetics student, it would be immensely helpful to have IPA on my computer. I've downloaded and installed Charis SIL, and the next part is to download and install an IPA Unicode keyboard layout. I've done that, and the instructions tell me to put the file into the Library folder called "keyboard layouts." I can locate this folder when searching for an application to open the file with, however when I'm searching "all my files" the folder is nowhere to be found. What can I do to successfully install this file?
    Thanks in advance,
    Esste

    Esste wrote:
I'm not sure exactly how to open the file.
It's not something you "open".  Go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and check the box for this layout, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar, plus the box for Keyboard Viewer.  Then select the layout in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and type.  Select Keyboard viewer from the same place to see which key does what.
IPA can also be input from the Character Viewer (Edit > Special Characters) if you just need a few characters.  In Character Viewer, go to the gear wheel at the top left and select Customize and then check the box for Phonetic Alphabet.

  • International Keyboards or Customize Keyboards?

    Hi,
I am using Turkish keyboards. There two keyboards for Turkish language one is Q other one is F Keyboard in order to write these letters "ıöçşüİğ". Unfortunatelly ipad does not support either of them.
Does enyone knows how to customize keyboards?
P.S. it is SHAME for a world wide company like apple not to support international languages!..

I have the same problem with him, but I dont want to see turkish keyboard on my screen. I only want them when I press the button longer. If I just choose turkish qwerty, turkish qwerty pc, and turkish, they all appear on the screen. I want to use US keyboard with the support of these letters ""ıöçşüİğ".
Normally when I am using my iphone, I choose English - Qwerty - US keyboard and Turkish- Qwerty- Turkish Qwerty PC. It works like that. However,  on the ipad there is no QWERTY option for the Turkish Software Keyboard Layout, so I cant choose English - Qwerty - US keyboard and Turkish- "Qwerty" - Turkish Qwerty PC.
    Can anyone help?

  • How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

    Thanks for the reply Mike
But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
    Any idea?

  • Exchange a brand new computer because of the keyboard layout ?

    Hi !
I'm currently in Finland for work, and I bought a Macbook Air, it's brand new so.
    But I didn't thought of the keyboard layout, which is of course Finnish;
    Do you think I can exchange this MBA with a one with the correct layout back in my country;
Or is it better to return this MBA here, and buy a new one once I'm home ?
I'd like to be able to return or exchange the MBA in my country, is the refund/exchange policy international ?
    Thanks

The European law state you have anyway a 7 day open box return policy for this kind of product, I think I'll go to the store and ask if they can exchange it for one with international/US keyboard or give me a refund if they havn't got one.
I got a callback appointement with Apple Support France tomorrow (my country) to ask them if it's possible to use the warranty to exchange layout. But as you said, I don't think it's possible since the keyboard is working perfectly fine..

download and run Find Any File to search for  "Antidote".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. Any file you find will be in the search results window and can be dragged to the Desktop and then to the Trash bin.

    ## Detail of bug
When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
and the primary language is set to Japanese.
But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.
    ## Captures
I've took some of screen captures.
I'm sorry for the capture includes Japanese words, so I added description in English.
    Capture 1:
    Mac OS X Keyboard Setting
    Capture 2:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard
    Capture 3:
Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard, with a additional registry key configured.

This bug also affects the Canadian English settings.  If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard.  Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times.  The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

            * Windows 8.1 (Hungarian)
    ## Detail of bug
When I connect to the listed remotes the client sets the keyboard layout to Latvian which is a completely different layout than Hungarian (not even close...).
    - On Windows 8 if I set the language on the login screen it stays on that language after the login.
    - On Windows Server 2003R2 and 2008R2 even if I set the language at login it will switch back to LV after the login.
    ## Attachments
Unfortunately cannot include my shots because I'm not allowed to do this...
    ## End of report
Please allow the users to set the correct "target" language on connection basis because the automatic method the app use to determine that is unreliable.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feedback.
I will forward this to the product team.

    sor for bad eng.

Perhaps I'm not following your logic.  But why must you work with remote images?
Let's say your products page is uploaded to https://yourDomain.com/
and your local images are in an images folder that uploads to https://yourDomain.com/images/
Given that workflow, everything will be on the secure server so there is no reason to use remotely hosted images during development.
