Customized kernel for reducing laptop power consumption

Do there exist any custom kernels that reduce power consumption, possible even geared towards laptop (e.g. 2nd gen sandybridge) users?
For instance if one uses the stock kernel vs. linux-ck, etc... are there any drastic differences in power consumption, or are most of these custom kernels geared towards performance improvements?

I know you were looking for a customized kernel that reduces power consumption but have you looked at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop_Mode_Tools ?

  • Custom kernel for es1371?

Do I have to build a custom kernel to get the es1371 sound module?
If so, is abs/pacman the best way to go just to get it? I am using 2.6.20-ARCH and it works fine other than sound.
Please, no directions to wiki alsa page, or to gentoo alsa page, or the alsa homepage
    Been there, done it.
The onboard chip works great with the oss driver on linux, works great with *bsd, and OS/2. Just not alsa.
    Thanks.

EDIT: sorry I wasn't very clear. I am wanting to use the oss module. Do I need to recompile a kernel for that module?

That is the one I don't want to use
That is the alsa module isn't it?
I am wanting the oss module "es1371"
    Thanks
I would dearly love to see what somebody has configured to use with alsa/snd-ens1371 that will work all the time and even through reboots.
fwiw- mine is an onboard chip

  • Trouble with custom kernel for EeePC 1000H and bluetooth

I believe I've got pretty much everything working on my 1000H except for bluetooth. I can't seem to get the hardware working. The module is loaded, and dmesg has references to bluetooth, but blueman does not list the adapter, and running "hcitool scan" from the command line returns "Device is not available: No such device".
I've enabled every bluetooth-related item I can find in the kernel, so I don't see what I'm missing. I did import the config from the stock kernel, where bluetooth was working fine.

NOTE: I load eeepc-laptop via rc.local to save time. I don't have any other hardware issues that I can think of.

Got it. I tried booting with MOD_AUTOLOAD set to yes, and it was working fine. Looks like I needed to specify some more modules in my list.

  • [solved] building the kernel headers for custom kernels

well, ive been building several different kernels for my laptop, so that i can test stuff. but ive got a problem with the kernel headers.
ive mirrored the arch kernel's PKGBUILD and modified some naming to get a custom kernel. but when i try to build a custmo module, it complains the headers are broken. (example, vbox_build_module).
im pasting the pkgbuild here for future reference...if someone sees something thats plain wrong, please say so.
    thanks

for anything that might be missing. The error message when compiling would give you more of a clue. Off-hand, you may need to add 'generated', as I recall I needed that when the kernel moved to 2.6.33.
Problem with vbox_build_module after Kernel update.
Would you care to elaborate for us less versed in "Linux Geek" skills?

I needed to create a custom kernel for my motherboard in order to have support for my integrated LAN and AGP bus...  My chipset is ULi's M1689.  Apparently, it will be native to maybe the 2.6.11 kernel, but definitely to the 2.6.12 kernel.
In the meantime, I created a custom 2.6.10 kernel with the required patches as described in the wiki.  It works! Thanks!
Now, I want to also create a custom Nvidia package that compiled for this kernel, so if I every re-install etc.  I just need to have these 2 packages handy to be up and running quickly.
Has this been done?  Is there a how-to?
    Thanks!
    KF

Doesn't the genuine arch package work? Just run pacman -S nvidia in runlevel 3 and it should work. You just have to have sources of your kernel. Well, at least this works with my non-stock nitro kernel. Here's some more reference. I guess it gets a bit more tricky with multiple kernels, but it's not your case, is it [didn't get it clearly enough]?

  • [SOLVED] Macbook 2,1 Intel 945GM: no backlight property custom kernel

    Hi,
I just finished compiling a custom kernel for my Macbook and for the life of me cannot figure out which option enables backlight control. I'm suspecting it might be CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT, but I can't actually find it via 'make menuconfig.' In other words, I can grep it from the raw config, but don't know where it is:
    $ grep -A10 -B10 CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT .config
    CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
    # CONFIG_FB_CFB_REV_PIXELS_IN_BYTE is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_FILLRECT is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_COPYAREA is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_IMAGEBLIT is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_FOREIGN_ENDIAN is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SYS_FOPS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_WMT_GE_ROPS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_MACMODES is not set
    [b]# CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT is not set[/b]
    # CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING is not set
    # Frame buffer hardware drivers
    # CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
    # CONFIG_FB_ARC is not set
    But menuconfig is like this:
    --- Support for frame buffer
    [ ] Enable firmware EDID
    [ ] foreign endianness support --->
[ ] Video Mode Handling Helpers
    [ ] Tile Blitting Support
It's hard to reproduce entirely here, but the point is that the config grep returns fb_backlight just above mode helpers/tilebitting, but above those are foreign endianness, and that's not where the backlight setting is.
The card is the Intel 945GM; on the default Arch kernel I can use xbacklight to adjust brightness. With my custom compiled one, I get "no outputs have backlight property" with xbacklight and, indeed, /sys/class/backlight is empty.
Would someone kindly tell me which kernel option provides the backlight property for this card?

    @byte:
Thanks for the suggestion, and the link to the current config. I was wondering where I might find that. Not looking so promising so far:

I don't see much there to wonder about. CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT only gets triggered if certain drivers are enabled. But I don't have any of those. I'm re-compiling right now with one of them, just for kicks, to see what happens. I have the right LCD backlight options set to match the default. On the ACPI front, we have this:

Most of that seems about right, and the end stuff is all specific laptop drivers.
I'll post back when this is done. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I compiled in i915 and intel_agp vs. having them as modules. Should that make any difference?

  • Custom BIOS for GE60 2oc

    Hello!
I would like to request a custom bios for my laptop (MSI GE-60 2oc).
I have had problems with low CPU utilization after updating the embedded controller with official MSI firmware update. At the same time I was supposed to update the BIOS, but I couldn't, using the official driver found on MSI download center, since my system told me it's not the right version.
I wanted to try this new approach as a new bios might help, I figured. I can't find any downgrading for the embedded controller. Would a custom bios be good thing for me or am I doing this all wrong?
    Current bios: E16GCIMS.509
    EC firmware installed: 16GCEMS1.506
The BIOS update that did not work: E16GCIMS.611

I know got my current version of BIOS and EC by MSI support so I will experiment with them. Downgrading to EC v. 5.00 helped I think. I have started to meassure now and the thing is that my GPU seems to have a real low core clock. The GT750m is marketed as 967 mhz but GPU shark and 3DMark 11 shows that I have 405 mhz. When playing Starcraft 2 I get real low FPS considering the settings (25 fps while playing medium quality and 1080p res.) hard to find comparing stats on the net. When meassuring with 3Dmark 11 I get a 2800 score which is comparable to other machines like mine.

  • [SOLVED] How to install custom kernel from AUR?

I am trying to install the custom kernel for the Acer Aspire One from AUR. What is the correct way to go about doing this? I pacman -U the .pkg.tar.gz I downloaded and it put a new kernel folder in /usr/src. Do I just copy the old .config file and make?

  • [Request] cryogenic kernel module to reduce power consumption

    Hi there,
I found a very interesting kernel module to reduce power consumption. It is called cryogenic:
Cryogenic is a Linux kernel module that allows to reduce energy consumption by means of enabling cooperative clustering of I/O operations among the various applications that make use of the same hardware device. In order to achieve this target, Cryogenic provides an API that enables applications to schedule I/O operations on SCSI and network devices at times where the impact the operations have on energy consumption is small.
    https://gnunet.org/cryogenic
Is someone interested in packaging this for the AUR?
    Thanks!

What part of that document led you to think it would automagically reduce power consumption without application support?
I saw that document (and it is the same as your first post... 106 pages..meh), all points me to (still) think that applications have to explicitely support cryogenic to take advantage from it, is pretty clear:
    Page 28
In this section we present the way developers should use Cryoge nic’s API in order to
benefit from its capabilities . We illustrate with examples the code that must be added to modify the behaviour of any application and give a clearer idea of the execution flow .
Did you read that document, yes?

  • Optimizing system for best performance/stability and a custom kernel

I have ArchLinux running on a MacBook 4.1 (early 2008), and it's running very well so far. But I would like to optimize it for best performance and stability (but not at the cost of losing 'graphical interface' quality). I want to compile a custom kernel, and I actually did once, but didn't do it well (and removed it), so I need some help from experts to tell me what should I disable or enable when compiling a custom kernel.
I will post dmesg and lspci (and rc.conf) here, but if you need any other information, please tell me.
    Thanks.

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
(this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
(use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • 3000 J converted to NAS, Are there fan control settings/ways to reduce power consumption?

So I've had this old 3000 J series - (J115 7388) that's been sitting doing nothing for a while, so I decided to convert it into a FreeNAS, I've stripped out the DVD, card readers, anything unneccesary to reduce power usage - on that theme I have a few questions...
    1. Is there a setting in the BIOS to automate the fans as & when needed to make the system quieter & to reduce power consumption - there will be 2x 2tb WD green drives in there with an idle time of 5 mins, atm I'm using one 320GB HDD from an old laptop - the system won't be used 90% of the time & I'd like it to be able to react when needed rather than constantly be on
the specs http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-67129 say the fan is variable, but I can't see anything obvious in the BIOS, it did take me some time to find the boot order, so maybe I'm overlooking something
So that's my main question & this is the bonus
    2. I know there's an Nvidia C51G chipset in there somewhere, is it possible to remove this, there's no GUI on the pc anymore, so again, & also anything else like sound, just to make it as efficient as possible & not to have any unessesary components using power
I have downloaded updated the latest BIOS (circa 2007) onto another pc from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001014 - even if it does provide an update to what I already have - I did note 2007 already on the BIOS version, of course I can't run it to try to make a bootable usb as the downloaded exe is for XP
I'm having a little trouble with the Lenovo site UI, not sure if it's coding - the links to guides/docs/drivers/downloads on http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?selector=expand just don't seem to be working for me

Are you sure there are no trojans or viruses on laptop? Also lounch the task manager and check out the service or application with deranged CPU loading while the laptop is in the idle mode. What is the power usage in the idle mode?

  • Power consumption increased with kernel 3.2.5

The new kernel 3.2.5 supposedly fixed the old power regression introduced in 2.6.39 (or so). On my T60 laptop (Core 2 Duo) not only that the power consumption stayed high, but the pcie_aspm=force option passed to the kernel is not working anymore. The result: my laptop consumes 20W on idle (I use KDE, kmail and firefox on with 2 tabs open). That's 25% more than what I had with the older 3.2.4 kernel and pcie_aspm=force enabled.
powertop2 does not show  anything unusual, the CPU is basically idle on the lowest available frequency 98% of the time (I'm using the ondemand governor).
Did you guys experience something similar or is it just me?

If you don't use Skype then I'd delete it.
PIM services is a bit high. I'd remove each of your accounts under Settings >Accounts. Then reboot the device. Monitor the PIM services battery drain for a while with no accounts added and see how it goes. Then add each account back, one at a time, and monitor for a couple hours to see the PIM services usage. It should be a bit high for the first hour while information syncs to the device then it should settle down. Once you're satisfied the account is working OK you can add the next account. Find the one that keeps the PIM services drainage high.
If the device doesn't show 4G, then what does it show?

  • [SOLVED] Huge power consumption after kernel upgrade.

    Dear All,
I have recently bought the new lenovo thinkpad X1 equipped with a Core I5 processors and 4GB of RAM.
I am quite satisfied with this machine except for the fact that the fan is extremely loud (but perhaps a bios upgrade will fix problem).
    Now my problem:
When I first installed Arch (first days of August) I ran powertop and the power consumption was around 10 Watts when idle with wifi card turned off.
Now, after some upgrades, the power consumption raises to 18W in idle and consequently the battery lasts less than 2h.
    Here my current configuration:
    Linux think-x1 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Aug 30 08:53:25 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
and here the powertop output obtained with the cpu frequency governor set to "On demand":
    Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies)
    C0 (cpu running) ( 5.3%) Turbo Mode 0.1%
    polling 0.0ms ( 0.0%) 2.50 Ghz 0.0%
    C1 mwait 0.2ms ( 0.1%) 2.21 Ghz 0.0%
    C2 mwait 0.3ms ( 0.0%) 1200 Mhz 0.1%
    C3 mwait 2.4ms ( 0.0%) 800 Mhz 99.8%
    C4 mwait 13.1ms (94.6%)

    0.1% ( 0.3) kworker/u:3
    0.1% ( 0.3) watchdog/0
I have also tried to disable most of the running daemons and unload some modules, but I have never got less than 14/15W when idle, which in my opinion is definitely too much!
As far as I'm concerned, the kworker process is responsible most of the wakeups.
    Any ideas?

pogeymanz wrote:I read somewhere that the kernel devs really don't see this as an issue. They just expect that laptop owners should know to try these boot parameters. So, definitely not by 3.1.

enabling it by default in 3.0 caused regressions for some people, so it was
disabled. Hopefully Intel figures it out, and we can switch it back on by
default in 3.1 / 2.6.41 (until then, you'll have to set it by hand).
Interesting stuff, also recommend this thread on phoronix:

  • No /dev/sda1 for flash drive w/custom kernel [solved]

I think I may have made an error selecting the right drivers for my kernel or something. When I put my flash drive in with the official arch kernel, /dev/sda1 is created. However, when I put my flash drive in with my custom kernel, it does not. The weird thing is when I do a tail /var/log/messages.log, it gives me this:

I will be more than happy to provide any more info that you may need. This has bothered me for a while, so any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply penguin!
I tried adding it to the kernel, but it did not work. I think usb_hid is just for usb keyboards/mouses/etc.
I noticed that every time I remove and plugin my flash drive /var/log/messages.log says something slightly different for my flash drive if that helps:

  • Minmal Custom Kernel 2.6.29.6 for NC10 - fatal: acpi_cpufreq

    Hi,
I try to compile a minimal custom kernel based on 2.6.29.6 for my Samsung NC10 netbook. Main reason is to get the namuga webcam running (doesn't work with 2.6.30) but also to get something optimised (boot-speed).
The kompilation and the kernel work and the webcam work, but I have two issues:
    1. During boot I get the message:
    Fatal: can't load module acpi_cpufreq
    Fatal: can't load module cpufreq_powersave
    Fatal: can't load module cpufreq_ondemand
Powertop as well doesn't show cpu-frequency values (what works with the standard kernel).
    I however think I enabled all I need in .config (acpi support, ... cpu_frequ_scaling, .. acpi_cpufrequ )
