Customizing Front Row responses to IR remote

Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but I am looking to customize Front Row's response to the IR remote. I am not averse to programming if someone can provide pointers to where I should look. I know there's iRedLite, but it crashes when I try to customize it. Thanks.

Thanks Doug. Remote Buddy is quite good, and it allows me to customize responses. I have exactly the response I am looking for, now. I wouldn't have minded learning how to program it myself, but this is a cinch.
Chris: thanks for your response. Yes, iRedLite is still in beta (& free), so I can't be too particular.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger - Front Row wont respond to remote?

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I thought I'd better get with it!.
I use front row a fair amount as the iMac is used for multimedia mostly.
However, the computer doesn't respond when I press the menu button on the remote, even when I get really close.
I have check the security settings but they are almost all shaded out. The remote is not paired and the setting state that any remote can be used. However, when the security pane is open the menu button works and opens front row?
It might be irrelevant but I use eye diversity with a remote. I also have B&W speakers with a remote. However, it all worked fine on Tiger.
Having to go onto the iMac to open Front Row sort of spoils the point of having a remote.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?
    Many thanks.
    Andy

    Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your input. It seems obvious. Obviously one of those Mac things I hadn't picked up on yet.
Unfortunately the remote still wouldn't pair. I pressed next and menu for ages as instructed but nothing?
I have messed around a bit more and it appears that Front Row works when I quit Eye Diversity TV. The iMac appears slow to open applications with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger, especially after waking. Do you know whether this is normal?
I'll try and raise the issue with EyeTV but clearly something odd is going on. I read a comment that it was best to format the iMac before installing Snow Leopard. I'm just a bit worried about losing the data and programmes I already have on the iMac.
    Many thanks.

  • Front row doesn't see remote source movie folder

    Hi,
I did a forum search and didn't see this addressed anywhere else.
When I open a remote source in Leopard Front Row, and navigate to the movie folder, it displays what is in the local movie folder rather than what is in the remote computer's movie folder. It will see movies in the remote iTunes library. All machines I have tested are at 10.5.1. I enabled iTunes sharing on each of the machines I used as a remote source.
Is there a setting I am missing somewhere or is this just the way Front Row works in Leopard?
    Thanks!

Funny, I was just investigating this myself. This occurred in my setup as well, which includes:
    - iMac running Leopard 10.5.1, iTunes 7.5 (19) with password-free sharing enabled, running as a media server, hosting these types of files (all legally purchased and owned, in case anyone from the MPAA is reading this):
    - DVD movies ripped to VIDEO_TS folders using MacTheRipper
    - MP4 movies ripped with Handbrake
    - MPG and MOV format home movies
    - Macbook Pro running Front Row 2.0 (229) on Leopard 10.5.1 as a client
    - Local Wifi D-Link 624 (802.11g) network with external firewalls, but no restrictions on local traffic
    - OS X firewalls disabled on both iMac and Macbook Pro
As a workaround, I did the following:
    1. Using Finder on the Macbook Pro client, connected to the iMac Movies folder. This mounts the remote folder locally on the client.
    2. Grabbed the iMac Movies icon and dragged it to the Macbook Pro client's Movies folder. This creates an alias to the remote folder. If you want, you can rename this alias to something like "Remote Movies".
    3. Opened Front Row > Movies in the Macbook Pro. I now can see my locally stored movies as well as the remotely-stored movies under the newly-created folder alias. All my remote movies now play locally in Front Row.
Anyone else have a more-elegant solution?
    Regards,
    Steven

  • Customizing Front Row

    Hi,
I am trying to customize the menus in FR. I was able to remove certain menu items (e.g. podcasts) and change the "TV Shows" button to "Slide Shows" (allows me now to play .mov files created from slide shows under the 'appropriate' menu choice). I'd also like to get rid of the "iTunes Top TV episodes" or the "Theatrical Trailers" header in the "TV shows" or "Movies" menu lists, respectively, but simply can not find where this information is contained (.plists ?). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think that's possible to re-arrange the menus. You can use Front Row Trailers to block access to the online items (the "iTunes Top TV episodes" or the "Theatrical Trailers" header in the "TV shows" or "Movies" menu lists).

  • The front row is not working. Remote control not triger,

Front row is not working, Remote control no response, command-esc not triger as well.
check keyboard shortcut from system preference, there is no front row.
    anyone know why?

Ok first try it in another Account.
    1. Open the account system pref window (System Preferences > Accounts)
    2. Click the plus button at the bottom
    3. Specify an account name (ex: test)
    4. Add account
    5. Logout of your current account, and login to the newly created one
If it works, then something was wrong with your account, move your files to the new account, and delete the old one.
    If it did not work:
    1. Try the reinstall again (DO NOT DO "ARCHIVE AND REINSTALL", as this may keep some file that is hindering FR from operating correctly
    2. Make sure the FR file is in the Core Services Folder (Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
    3. Make sure that you do not have the IR sensor turned off on your computer (System Prefs > Security > Uncheck "Disable Remote Control IR Sensor")
    4. Make sure that your remote is paired (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302545)
    5. Make sure that the Command + Esc key is setup to respond by opening front row:
    (1) Open system prefs
    (2) Open keyboard & mouse prefs
    (3) Click keyboard shortcuts
    (4) Scroll down until you see front row
    (5) Assign the Command + Esc key if it is not mapped
    6. Finally, if all else fails, call AppleCare while your computer is still under warranty
    Hope this helps,
    Cory

  • Front Row without Apple Remote

Is there a way to open Front Row without the apple remote?

  • Remote kicks out after a while of watching dvds with Front Row

Hey there! Recently I have done a lot of dvd watching on Front Row, using the apple remote that came with my MacBook. The problem is, after a while of watching, my remote stops working. The dvd keeps playing and everything runs as if the remote was still working, but no matter what I press, nothing happens. To get it to work again, I have to close my MacBook, wait for it to fall asleep, wait for a little while, then open it again, and my dvd continues from where it left off and my remote is functioning again. However, the cycle then repeats after another period of time.
This is really starting to bug me. Any ideas?

This sounds similar to the problem I describe here. Does Front Row stop responding to the Keyboard (volume keys for instance) as well?

  • Front row doesn't work with both apple+esc and remote

My new macbook can't open front row, not with the remote, and with apple+esc, could it be a file that i have to delete and then restart the computer and that that file automatic comes back??

If, for whatever reason, Front Row isn't in that location, you'll have to re-install it. This shouldn't be a big deal except I'd be a little curious to know why it disappeared...
Insert your original Mac OS X install disk that came with your Mac. You do not need to startup from the disk. Double-click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" option on the disk. At the "Installation Type" window of this installer, click the "Customize" button. This will give you a list of software to check on or check off. Check on the option for Front Row but uncheck everything else (unless there's something else missing that you need!). Run the installer and this should put Front Row back in its proper location. Depending on which version gets installed, you may wan to run the Software Update to make sure Front Row is up-to-date.

  • Front row & shared libraries on same computer

    Hey
My girlfriend and I dont have the same music taste, which is why we like to keep our music on different accounts. However recently I've bought a Mac Mini intended to work as a mediacenter. I've planned to use Front Row along with the remote control, but I still like to keep 2 different music lists for me and the girlfriend.
So far I've tried with 2 accounts on the Mac mini each of them with shared Itunes libraries. I can access the 2 different libraries on other computers fine, but not through Front Row on the Mini itself.
Any ideas on how to solve my issue?
    Thx in advance.
    /Rocky

Ohhh it's easy... just get a new girlfriend ? <G>
    So I see your problem.
Just to be clear, you seem to be aware that using Fast User Switching, as opposed to logging out is the only way to half way make this work. But you are right, it doesn't seem possible to share different iTunes user accounts on the same computer thru Front Row.
As a matter of fact, I was playing a shared song in iTunes from another user on my computer, and when I clicked the remote to engage Front Row, the song stopped....
I would like to point out that it IS possible to share two different user's iTunes on another computer..... so if you set up your first computer with you and your girlfriend's accounts, set iTunes to share on both, then keep both accounts active by using Fast User Switching, THEN on your Mac Mini, you can access both of those shared accounts... just not at the same time.. This is done under the SOURCES menu...
If I come up with any other ideas... I'll let you know.

  • Using Front Row on a second display

TVRow version 2 is now available:
    http://sites.google.com/site/robijnx/products/tvrow201
This allows the user to select which display Front Row uses. It is useful for home entertainment (eg using a projector or plasma TV).
This topic is covered in an archived discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1374039&tstart=0
    and some more background at:
    http://users.tpg.com.au/aoaug/mac_video.html#frontrow
(eg external displays on an iMac G5)
It would be useful if this option was available directly in Front Row settings.

Having used TV Roow 2 for a few weeks, I do find it as nuisance that I cannot swap displays with Front Row running. Sometimes I want to run Front Row on the iMac and other times on the projector. I need to select TV Row from the Dock and change the display option to achieve this. In some respects Version 1 was better because starting TV Row automatically sent Front Row to the projector, whereas starting Front Row with teh Apple Remote left it on the iMac.
Still waiting for Front Row to include a menu to select the display to use...

  • Front Row Locking up with Movies

So far computer is behaving well, although I have found that Front Row will lock up if I try and view movies or podcasts, however movie trailers work fine.
I can force quit but after that Front Row won't launch any more until I restart. This seems repetable with same results. Viewing pictures from iphoto works fine.
Is anyone else having this problem. How else can I launch front row other than the remote. I don't see an app called Front Row. I want to see if issue is with remotes functionality or with Front Row.
Oh, also how about DVD playback? I have not run search on this yet but someone else with new imac had one DVD play fine and another one lock up.

Just to follow up on my own post...
Running the sample command on the unresponsive Front Row.app showed it was trying to resolve a font.
I had disabled the Hoefler Text font using Font Book, in an attempt to get iWeb to render blog pages as HTML instead of as images. After re-enabling Hoefler Text I re-launched Front Row, and it did not lock up.
I'll post a follow-up if the lockup recurs.

  • Front Row is missing

Who can tell me how to get front row back.. the remote or command-esc won't open it.
I think I lost it after reinstalling Mac OS X (on the advice of the apple helpline, to solve some problems I had)
    Thanks

If you re-install Mac OS X, then you might lose Front Row. After you startup and log in, you should be able to put your Mac OS X install disk in the drive and you'll see an "Install Bundled Software Only" option. When you get to the Installation Type window, you should be able to customize the installation and uncheck everything except Front Row.

  • Front row, where's the app and login problem....

    Hi all !
When a use front row via the apple remote, each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password... So i have to get up and enter the password, annoying since i'm in the bed trying to sleep on sleeping music :-))
BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?

BTY where's Front row don't find it in the app folder ?
Front Row in Mac OS X 10.4.x is not an "application" so it doesn't live in the /Applications/ folder. It is part of the /System/ folder.
each time my Imac core duo goes to sleep, and i try to change playlist in itunes it ask me for my login/password...
Under the Security System Preferences, do you have the box checked "on" by the option that says, "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"? That must be the option that's causing the trouble. There's nothing built-in to Front Row to require a password...

  • Keyboard disabled with Front Row

Since I upgraded to Leopard, the keyboard no longer works when Front Row is open. The only thing I can do with the keyboard is Opt-Cmd-Esc, forcing Front Row to quit. Remote works fine, but keyboard arrows, Cmd-Esc to close, etc. do nothing on the keyboard.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem with my MacPro. It only affects one user. Try adding another user and see if that user sees the same issue. I have not been able to find what it is that is causing the issue with the one user. I have removed preference related to both front row and keyboard without any luck.
Front row was not availabile for the Macpro before Leopard.

  • To open Front Row, why do you have to hit the menu button twice?

I notice that when I first restart my computer and want to access front row via the apple remote, I have to hit the menu button twice to activate it. Does anybody know why this is?

Not sure, but I don't think FrontRow is set to run when you start the computer. When you click the menu button it'll start up the program - this will take a little time.
Just a though, but maybe you're not giving it long enough after the first button click to start up and enter FrontRow? Since I rarely reboot my Mac (just put it to sleep) I haven't experienced your problem.
