I can only cut and paste files in finder (with the mouse) when i give my password at every single action. This is too time consuming of course. The option in the menue bar cmd x is depicted in grey in stead of black, thus not possible. How to solve this? I use the lion version.

Wow, thanks for the tip!  Should've known Apple wouldn't have made it any easier for us to tap this hidden function.
In the meantime I've gone back to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model, where I use PathFinder as a Finder alternative that allows cutting and pasting, among other features I like (such as enlarging the default sidebar icon sizes in 10.6.8).  My battery life was cut in half with Lion and most of the new features have been supplemented in Snow Leopard by third-party utilities.  The only missing feature is iCloud, but I'm convinced Apple will backhaul this functionality to Snow Leopard at some time.  Otherwise frustrated Snow Leopard users will move to Windows to move up to the cloud!

  • What has happened to cut and paste files?

    Hi,
I was a Windows user for a long time and then I switched to Linux, and finally to Mac OS X. So I'm quite used to cut and paste files in Windows and Linux, I didn't discover this problem in Mac OS X until I tried right clicking on a file in order to move it into another folder, but I found out that there is no cut or move option in the menu, so I tried Edit> Cut in the menu bar of Finder but surprisingly I found out it is grayed out, nor does the command X button have any effect. so I always have to drag the files and navigate into the desired folder in order to move them there, which is really frustrating sometimes. Is it my Mac or every other Mac out there has the same Bug? What is the work around solution?

Thanks for the tip, its what I have been doing for a while.
You made a good point about cut files being deleted, however I think that is not the case, at least in other Operating systems that I have used, even If I forget to paste a file into a folder, they will never be deleted, at least it never happened to me, but I'm quite sure about this, so I don't think this would be a problem in Mac either, and if it is, which would be embarrassing, then what's the point of putting a dead Cut option in the Menu bar? am I missing something here? there has to be a work around, is it possible that I should change a security setting or something, somewhere?

  • How do  I cut and paste files on Mavericks?

How do I cut and paste files from Mac to External Hard disk? I was copying them and later moving the files from Mac to trash and then emptying the trash. This is so lengthy and time wasting process that Apple

Press and hold command as you're dragging and dropping: that will move the file, in stead of copying it.
Two other things that might be handy:
    * option-drag will force a copy, even if the file is on the same volume
    * command-option-drag will make an alias to the file/folder.

  • Cut and past files?

How can i cut and past files from lion to the external hard drive (My Passport WD)?

    Ahh, details, details.
my external hard disk allready has files in it from my windows laptop
Is the WD drive formatted as NTFS?
If you're not sure, select the disk in the Finder and choose File -> Get Info and look at the Format: label
If it is NTFS then there's your problem. Mac OS X can read NTFS-formatted volumes, but not write. Therefore the problem is not with copying files per se, but the fact that the Mac can't write to this disk at all.
Mac OS X can write to the disk if it's FAT32-formatted, or formatted under a number of different formats, but not as NTFS.
You'd need to reformat the disk (or, at least partition it) to create a Mac-writable volume for your Mac files.

  • How do you cut and paste files from a Macbook?

I am trying to cut (edit, select all, cut) and paste from a Macbook Pro, but when I try to paste into an external hard-drive, the paste function is greyed-out.  Command V doesn't even do anything.  How can I complete this simple task?  Thank you.

The hard drive is probably not Mac-writeable - likely it's NTFS (Windows) format.
If it's empty, you can reformat it to Mac format using Disk Utility.
If it has files that you need and/or you don't want to reformat, you can try Paragon NTFS to allow you to write to the drive.

  • I synced with new computer, lost apps. reinstalled but Office HD docs that we're not lost when I reinstalled will not cut and paste. Will I need to use only new documents to cut and paste?

I synced my IPad2 with a new computer and lost all apps. I reinstalled apps. When I reinstalled the Office2HD, all documents were still ther, but I am trying to cut and paste one and it is not allowing? Will I need to save new documents there for this function to work?

There are dozens of possibilities, Lisa.
Which C50-A do you have? There is a label on the bottom.
What security applications do you have installed? Webroot is a common offender.
Do you have Microsoft Office installed? If so, which version?
    Do you use Bluetooth?

  • How do I drag and drop files in iTunes 12?  I don't see my other computers in the side bar only playlist?

I upgraded to Itunes 12 and now cannot drag and drop my movies & music files between my shared computers?  The side bar option, which only appears under the Playlist tab does not show my other shared devices where I used to simply drag files over and drop them on them to transfer.  I have 2 IMACs and a macbook pro that i like to keep hard copies of my music and video libraries on.  Anyone know how I can get my shared computer to show up on the side bar so I can drag and drop like I've been doing for the last 5 years?

Thank you Peter.  Mine is more about creating playlist on my iMac and then wanting to drop it it on to my macbook pro for tailgating and family events, instead of recreating.  That doesn't seem like something that should bother apple as I already have the music and I am not going to go purchase it again off iTunes if this is what they are thinking.  I think this is about limiting our ability to share music and movies.

  • I recently lost access to external hard drive connected to my iMac (no icon visible). My iTunes and iPhoto files are accessed from this drive.  I can't seem to get the time machine to restore these two. that drive was NOT excluded from time machine backup

    Hi.
help!  recently I noticed  the external drive icon missing from my desktop...the one with my huge itunes and iphoto libraries. I tried several things but couln't get it back. So I tried to restore to an older date in time machine with no success. I'm sure the drive was not set for exclusion from the backups. Any thoughts as to where i'm going wrong? I was under the impression that external drives were also backed up with time machine...am I delusional?

Frequently doing a SMC reset will help this issue, for directions please click the iMac SMC and PRAM reset link. Also check the obvious such as cables and connections. Or it's even possible the EHD has failed, they can and do.

  • My menu bar is missing but when I right click in the top section and see all of the toolbars the menu bar has a check by it but does not appear. Hitting alt does not make it appear either...any ideas?

  • Finder crashes when i cut and paste

For the last few days, every time that i try to cut and paste files from one folder to another through the finder, finder crashes and i have to relaunch. interestingly, the files are actually pasting properly into the destination folder notwithstanding that finder hangs and stops responding every time. this has been happening with file folders that are about 150 - 250 Mbs in size. All that i'm doing is command-a (select all), command-c and then in the destination folder, command-v. The screen pops up which says that the computer is gathering info about the files to be pasted and then the swirly "working" mouse icon comes on and doesn't leave. Eventually i have to relaunch finder. This has happened about 10 times in a row. I'm not running any other applications at the time (other than widgets).
    Any thoughts? Thanks.

I'm going to ask around in the meantime run Repair Disk and see if it turns anything up:
EDIT: Actually, you can run "verify disk" from Disk Utility on your Mac. If that turns up anything then follow the instructions to repair.
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear..
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

  • Is there a file size limitation on the cut and paste function in OSX?

I have noticed that sometime I am able to cut and paste files and sometimes I can only copy them.  Is there a limitation in the system and if so what is it?  I have also that sometimes I get the option to keep a duplicate file and sometimes it will only allow me to replace it.  Clarity anyone?

You should not be able to "cut" a file at all, regardless of its size. Files can only be copied.
Depending on where you copied it from and where you are trying to copy it to, you may be able to only copy.
If the enclosing folder has an ACL that denies delete, then you wont be able to move it, only copy.

  • Cut and paste from Word into Mail

I have an earlier post where I thought I had solved this problem, but now it's back with a twist:
I can cut and paste from Word, but after a few cut and pastes, it seems as if I can only paste the last successful section of text: copying new text from word seems to work, but when pasting into Mail, only the previous section of cut and pasted text appears.
I have checked the preferences within Mail, and they are set for plain text... so there should be no problem, yes?
I also tried quitting and then restarting Mail, but had the same problem...
    Any advice?

    Thanks, aqua*star -
I just checked the "archiving" and "back-up" suggestions in the Mail "Help" window and got the following info:
    Mail preferences and messages
Your Mail accounts, rules, signatures, and Smart Mailboxes preference settings can easily be backed up. Tip: All Mail-related preference files should be backed up or restored as a group.
    To back up:
Note: These steps back up Mail preferences, but do not back up Mail messages (emails), although you can do that with the .Mac Backup utility. See below if you want to manually back up Mail messages (mailboxes).
Create a uniquely-named folder on your desktop (or other favorite location). For example, you might call it "Mail Prefs Backups May152005" (adding a date is a good idea).
    Quit Mail if it's running.
In the Finder choose Home from the Go menu.
    Open the Library folder.
    Open the Preferences folder.
Copy the "com.apple.mail.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file. Don't remove the original file from its current location (this file contains your Mail accounts information).
    Close the Preferences folder.
    Open the Mail folder.
Copy the "MessageRules.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (this file contains your Mail rules).
Copy the "SmartMailboxes.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (you guessed it, this file contains Smart Mailboxes information).
Finally, copy the Signatures folder to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the folder. (Your custom signatures, if you use them, are stored here.)
To restore: Just move all of the copies of the files and folders from your uniquely-named folder to the original locations from which they came, as listed above.
It looks like I can save and restore the Mail rules separately from the plist...

  • No cut and paste function?

    hello,
coming from a window world, i don't know all about mac.
i was surprised not to found the cut and paste option on leopard.
is it me or it doesn't exist ?
    thank you

    To (hopefully) clarify:
In Windows XP, you can cut and paste files and folders in Explorer using ctrl+x and ctrl+v. This is essentially the same thing as dragging and dropping items between folders, as long as you're doing it between folders on the same volume.
In Leopard's Finder, you can't cut and paste files, but you can copy and paste them, either by using the menu or keystrokes (cmd+c and cmd+v). Dragging and dropping files between folders on the same volume has the same effect as cutting and pasting (moving). If you drag and drop files between folders on different volumes, however, it will copy rather than move the file by default.
There are also some interesting things you can do by combining key commands and dragging and dropping. Holding the following keys while dragging/dropping will have different effects:
    Option - duplicate the file
Command + Option - create an alias (shortcut) to the file
    Hope that helps.

  • Help the Noobie-Cut and Paste

Im new to Logic, coming from a protools/dp backround. Why is cut and paste so difficult for me?
Lets say I have a guitar part where the first verse is a better performace than the second verse. I want to cut a p[aste the 12st verse on top of the second verse.
I go to snap bar mode , highlight , copy , go to beginning of second verse , paste (in overlap mode). And everything seems fine. But once i click somewhere else in the track. The pasted region is hidden behind the longer original recorded region. What gives? Ive looked in the manual and cant find an answer. This is slowing down my work so much, please help!
    thx

*You can either select drag-mode "Crossfade" (next to the Snap mode menue) - L8 will then automatically perform crossfades between the region or you use overlap mode and draw the crossfade in by yourself with the "crossfade tool" from the toolbox.
*You can choose "tie Regions by length change" from the Region menue (that´s probably a poor translation from my german menue), L8 will then shorten your first region so it doesn´t overlap anymore (setup a keycommand for it if you wish). Anyway, L8 will give priority to the second region so the first region will be cut off from the Audio output when Region 2 enters as you can´t play two regions from one Audio object at the same time. If Region1 already has the exact lenght you want and fits with the lenght of your first verse you can also use the command "perform multiple copies of region" (you find that in the Region menue also, setup a key command for this too if you wish).
*You can just press alt+click on region (which copies it) and drag it to the point you want it.

  • Cut and paste not working in iphoto

I can't cut and paste between events in iPhoto any longer.  i tried flagging a photo but the add flag item to event was grayed out. how can you move photos between events.  i tried dragging but page didn't scroll very well so was a little inefficient

I see, in the "Photos" album I cannot cut and paste either. I can cut the photo from the event, but not paste it into a different event, because It is impossible to select the event for pasting in the Photos album.
@ Terence Devlin, is pasting into an event supposed to work inside the Photos album?
I can paste into an event in the Events view. And dragging and dropping between events is working well in the Photos view.
i tried flagging a photo but the add flag item to event was grayed out.
This cannot work in Photos view, because "Add flagged items to the selected event" requires an event to be selected, an in the Photos album is no selected event. You can create a new event from the flagged photos and drag this event on top of the event where you want them to go.
So, I am afraid you will have to switch between the Photos album and the Events view to move your photos around.
