Cut and Paste in Finder

I'm new to Mac and just wondering how I cut and paste, I know how to copy and paste.

To elaborate on the other answer:
1) The inability to cut and paste is a protection against cutting an "icon" - the file or folder - and then getting distracted and not pasting it, thereby effectively erasing it.
2) If you have both the source window (where the item is) and the target window (where the item's going) you can just drag it from one spot to another. That's obvious, and the problem is that you don't usually have the target window open. But you can use "spring-loaded folders" to make this work without having the target window open:
- In Finder preferences, General tab, check "Spring-loaded folders and windows" on - leave the Delay setting at Medium, or set it closer to Long till you get used to the feel of this.
- Back in the Finder, grab the icon you want to "cut and paste" and drag it to the folder that holds the target folder (even if the target folder is nested a few levels deeper). DON'T LET GO of the icon! Hover over the folder and it springs open - this works even if you're hovering over a folder in the sidebar; drag the icon over the next folder you need opened, let it spring open, and so on. When you get to where you want it to go, drop the icon there. (Drop it in the wrong place - Undo moves it back to the original location).

  • Work-around for lack of cut and paste for files in finder

I am new to Mac and have observed some past but closed discussions about the annoying lack of cut and paste in Finder. I too find it very time-consuming to move a file into the folder where I want it to live - especially from downloads. Using a MacBook Pro 13", my open windows are naturally on top of each other and using drag and drop with a touch-pad for file organisation is very cumbersome. Four finger behaviour on touch pad only helps so far.
The approach I adopt is to use cmd c to copy the files or folders in question. cmd ` to flick between finder windows (usually more than one is open) and cmd v to place the files or folders where I want them after navigating through to the destination folder. Shift cmd N gives me a new folder if required. cmd ` takes me back to source folder (usually downloads) so I can cmd delete the files and keep things tidy. This is lengthy to write down. It is however reasonably quick if your fingers know the keyboard shortcuts.
Is there a more efficient way for me to work around this inhibitory feature of Finder? "Save as" is only good if you know you have a folder in your file structure already created and named and suitable to receive the file you want to file away (usually an attachment to an email).

This is in reply to your last paragraph...
This is the Mac OS default Save As... dialog:
Notice that there is a downward pointing disclosure triangle to the right of the Save As: field. If you click on the disclosure triangle, a full Finder window will be exposed, and this will enable you to place downloaded files wherever you like.
Notice, also, that in the bottom left hand corner of the exposed finder window, you are able to create a new folder (in any location on your system) to which you are able to download files.
This works the same way in any Save As situation, using any app, and the app you are in will remember where you last chose to save a file so that repetitive navigation in these dialog boxes is somewhat reduced.

I can't be the only person who has this problem with iCal- when a month ends on a Saturday I can't drag events into the next month and instead have to cut and paste - a real pain in the butt. I thought there was something called "scroll" but I can't find that.

Yeah that works, but, it involves a click on the event, a click on edit, a click on the date, keystrokes, plus, since you can't see the next month you have to have a calendar in front of you so as to put it to the right date. It's easier just to cut it and advance the month and paste it, once you are in the right month you can move it around helter skelter willy nilly no problems. Although now that you mention it I will try it, maybe it is easier than cut and paste as I don't really care about the date, as long as it gets moved into the right month I can drag it around all I want.

I transferred photos to my computer by cutting and pasting.  I have some on my phone that I didn't cut and paste.  Now they are gone and and I cannot find them anywhere on phone or computer. Are they lost forever.  I have done no back-up recently or icloud.  My daughters 8th grade graduation was on it.  I am devastated.

A lot of I should haves.  I had too many photos and while at work I opened up the 4 folders inside of the DCIM folder on my phone.  I didn't think it would be a big deal to just cut the photos and paste on my computer as I have  done this before.  i moved one folder that had 803 pictures in it and all was fine.  I ran out of time and unplugged phone and went home.  When I got to work this morning I was looking at my phone and realized I only had 34 pictures.  I knew there should have been 400+ there and they are gone.  Don't know what happened and if they were deleted off phone or computer I cannot see them anywhere.  I didn't back up (I know mistake) Lessoned learned I just hope there is something i can do!

  • Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive?Pls.help.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Finder crashes when i cut and paste

For the last few days, every time that i try to cut and paste files from one folder to another through the finder, finder crashes and i have to relaunch. interestingly, the files are actually pasting properly into the destination folder notwithstanding that finder hangs and stops responding every time. this has been happening with file folders that are about 150 - 250 Mbs in size. All that i'm doing is command-a (select all), command-c and then in the destination folder, command-v. The screen pops up which says that the computer is gathering info about the files to be pasted and then the swirly "working" mouse icon comes on and doesn't leave. Eventually i have to relaunch finder. This has happened about 10 times in a row. I'm not running any other applications at the time (other than widgets).
    Any thoughts? Thanks.

I'm going to ask around in the meantime run Repair Disk and see if it turns anything up:
EDIT: Actually, you can run "verify disk" from Disk Utility on your Mac. If that turns up anything then follow the instructions to repair.
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear..
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

OS X is all about keyboard shortcuts.
    To cut       cmd+x
    To copy     cmd+c
    To paste    cmd+v
With the Mouse, hold command and drag to your destination.

  • Cut and paste files by dragging in finder is only possible by giving my password. in the menu bar cmd x is depicted in grey so not available. How to c

I can only cut and paste files in finder (with the mouse) when i give my password at every single action. This is too time consuming of course. The option in the menue bar cmd x is depicted in grey in stead of black, thus not possible. How to solve this? I use the lion version.

Wow, thanks for the tip!  Should've known Apple wouldn't have made it any easier for us to tap this hidden function.
In the meantime I've gone back to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model, where I use PathFinder as a Finder alternative that allows cutting and pasting, among other features I like (such as enlarging the default sidebar icon sizes in 10.6.8).  My battery life was cut in half with Lion and most of the new features have been supplemented in Snow Leopard by third-party utilities.  The only missing feature is iCloud, but I'm convinced Apple will backhaul this functionality to Snow Leopard at some time.  Otherwise frustrated Snow Leopard users will move to Windows to move up to the cloud!

  • Cut and paste not working in (total)finder

    Hi all
I have noticed an issue with my cut and paste option on my macbook pro since I upgraded to Mountain Lion OS. I used to be able to cut items from a folder and paste into another folder quite efficiently. It's fine when I copy and paste, however this means I need to go back and delete the items I have pasted.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Meera

    Hi CT and meera404,
I am having the same problem of not being able to perform "command-x" and "command-v" (cut & paste) in Finder on Mac OS X 10.8.2.
When I go into the Finder menu options and click on the "Edit" tab menu, it appears that the "Cut" button is not available and appears as disabled.
Any suggestions on how I can enable this?
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

  • Multiple problems: can't open two windows, browser doesn't close although window disappears, and after working for a while I loose my ability to cut and paste or use drop down arrows

Maybe two weeks ago I discovered that I could no longer open two windows at a time (I can still open multiple tabs). I am also having problems with cutting and pasting, which is crucial to my on-line job. Plus, when I exit Firefox, it doesn't always shut down, so then when you go to re-open, of course, it won't (unless you go into process and turn it off). I have re-installed multiple times and I have also used restore. Nothing seems to be fixing this and I really, really don't want to use IE, especially for work.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    See also "Hang at exit":

Maybe also do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.<br />
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.<br />

  • Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending documents?

Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending files? I have to type them in each time...And it doesn't remember them for the future, as SendNow did.
Also, it seems that the message I type in is not kept, as it was with SendNow?
    Thanks!

    Hi drlaura,
You're correct on both counts--these features work differently Adobe Send than they do in Adobe SendNow.
If you're sending files from Adobe Reader, you can access your local Address Book, which should make entering email addresses easier. Please see: I’m trying to send a file from Adobe Reader, but I can’t access my computer’s address book to find my contacts. Why not?
Please let us know how it goes.

  • I can't cut and paste any images into apple mail

I have had my MacBook Pro for over three years now, without much trouble, but recently I've been unable to send images that I have cut and pasted into Apple mail. I can attach an image that I have saved in my photos and it will send but I can not send an image that I have cut and pasted from the internet.
I am using a gmail pop account and firefox as my primary browser. It took me a few times to figure this out as the image appears to be attached in my mail, but is removed when I send, such that if I have text and an image in an email the recipient receives only the text. Before I hit send I can see both the text and the image.
I have tried starting again in safe mode and repairing permissions. That has not helped. I can login to my gmail regularly and cut and paste images with no problem.
    This is exceptionally frustrating.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

  • Can no longer drag or cut and paste links or words from one place to another with new Firefox update

After updating Firefox 19.0.2 to my iMac Desktop 10.8.2, Lion, I can no longer drag or cut and paste anything to anywhere, anymore. Please help. Thanks!

Does this also happen if you try to copy/cut and paste text in a text area like "Post a Reply" on this forum?
    Try to reinstall Firefox.<br />
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 19.0.2: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Mac
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
