Cut in & Insert edit functions not operational.

I have FC Express 4.1. Using it for 1st time since I bought it. Can't get the cut in (F9) or insert edit (F11) to work. There are no buttons for these items below the canvases as per Final Cut Pro. How do I set it up?
ANY PROMPT HELP GREATLY REQUIRED!
ps: sorry about the Avid lingo -I'm an Avid editor by trade.

F9, 10, 11 are defualted to Expose and Spaces and you can turn them off in System Preferences then FCE works with these keys.

PE7 Edit functions Not Working well after Upgrading from Vista to Windows 7

My PE 7 was working very well under Vista Home Premium - 64 Bit. But after I upgraded (not clean install) to Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 Bit, it appears that the PE7 is working OK except for the EDIT functions.
I am talking about the Tool Icons on the left side. When I select any icon, the Mouse Curser does NOT chnage to reflect the proper shape. For example, when I click the Crop Tool, my mouse curser chnages to 3 little (tiny) crop icons in a row, and the crop functions don't work like they should.
Can anyone please help as to waht I need to do to correct this situation.

External edit function not opening photo in external editor

Hi folks , hope you can help , my external editor function in lightroom 4 has stopped working ie It will open the external edit space but the image does not open in that space any ideas . Your help much appreciated

You cannot use iphoto that way. PSE can't open photos from iphoto because if it were to write to your iphoto library it could easily corrupt it and cause the loss of all the images there. You should NEVER poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto.
You have two choices:
1. Set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto. Save, not save as without changing the name or format and iphoto will remember your last saved edits and the original, but you will need to lose the edits to revert back to the original. You will need to go to the PSE preferences>saving files and set On First Save to Save over existing to make this work. When you see the Save As window, something is wrong.
2. Export the photos from iphoto, use file>open in the editor and make all the changes you want, then save your image in any format or with any name you like and import the edited photo back to iphoto as a new file. This lets you save as many versions of your photo as you like.

You cannot; it's intentionally disabled to guard against accidental file loss. If you press Option when pasting the files, they'll be moved instead of copied.

Insert key does not function in Wkindows 7

Insert key does not work in Windows 7. I use this as a toggle to insert / overwrite and since going to Windows 7 SVP1 it does not function. I do an enormous amount of editing and need this function! Using universal keyboard.

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD.

Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders. Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs. Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

I'm thinking I can convert the files with Compressor and place them in a new folder with their original file names (not sure how to get compressor to do this yet) and then do a major "Reconnect Clip" afterwards.
Not sure if there's a more efficient way to get all the clips in the timeline to compressor. I want the full files, not a sequence export. I can go through one clip and a time and add the master file. I'd rather not.
The more automated processes the better.

yeah Media reconnect can be an issue.
Will Media Manager convert files? Another thing I was thinking was to Media Manage the sequence out, copying all the used files to a new folder, and then running that through compressor. But it still leads to a massive reconnect. Fine tuning all those edits would be less involved than re-editing the whole thing, I hope.

Preview with light or shade editing function is not working (black or white picture)

I have a problem with the preview function in iphoto (version 9.4.2 on a white macbook, mid 2007, os x lion, latest version, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD).
Whenever I use the light or shade editing function, the picture in the preview is getting completely black or white. If I close the editing screen, the normal preview is working with the edited picture.
I repaired the iphoto library, I tried to reinstall iphoto, I did a SMC reset but nothing worked. Yesterday, reinstalled my complete system and reinstalled iphoto but even this did not work.
Has anybody an idea how to deal with this problem? Is there a kind of BIOS funktion to activate or to deactivate like graphics boost or something like that? It would be great if anyone has an idea because editing photos efficiently is hard with my problem.

On the contrary, or at least I think so. If I remember it correctly, you can simply go to the top menu bar and click 'Photo', 'Edit in', 'Edit in Adobe Photoshop' and it will put your panorama in Photoshop so you can simply continue working on it. Hope it does the trick!

Insert edit partially disabled

i was doing some simple edits on Final Cut Pro 7.0.3, when suddenly the program began operating differently, as if i changed a setting.
when i drag clips around on the timeline, i no longer have the option of choosing an insert edit. i only can do an overwrite edit. this occurs whether or not my mouse cursor is above or below the horizontal line.
i consulted the internet, and i discovered the option of dragging the clip from the Viewer into the Timeline. When I do this, i am given the option of insert edit or overwrite edit.
I also found out about pressing the "option" key while dragging the clip from one place to another on the timeline. This allows me to do an insert edit, but it also leaves the original clip in it's former place, which I have to go back and delete.
Using these two methods is OK, i guess, but I'm a novice editor and I was very comfortable simply dragging my clips around on the timeline, rearranging the order. How can I get back to this?
I've started new projects, but the problematic program behavior remains. I've also gone back to old projects where this was never an issue, and the behavior occurs here, too.

unfortunately, this didn't help me. i tried to use the Preference Manager program to dispose of any altered preferences, but the program told me there were no preferences saved.
similarly, I tried to go to Library/Preferences to delete the appropriate file and thus bring Final Cut back to it's original settings, but the file that was specified is not there (i assume because there are no preferences saved).

How can I show only text edits and not text formatting when using print comments summary?

Acrobat 9.3.0 for Mac.
Here is the scenario: I used the Compare command to see the changes between 2 PDFs. The resulting file some edits are inserts and some are deletions. I want to print a comments summary only showing the text edits. In the Compare Option pane, I select Text and deselect Images, Annotations, Formatting, Headers/Footers, and Backgrounds. Now on the screen I see inserts are highlighted in blue and deletions are marked with sort of a caret and vertical bar symbol. So all looks good at this point. However, when I show the Comments List, I see addtional comments that indicate "Replace - The following text attributes were changed: fill color." Those comments do not appear in the page view unless I check the Formatting check box to show them. With Formatting unchecked, I print a comments summary and all of the "Replace - Fill Color" comments" appear on the resulting comments summary.
I only want to show text edits, not text formatting changes. So questions are:
1. Why, when the Formatting checkbox is unchecked, do the text formatting comments still appear in the comments list when they do not appear on the page display.
2. How can I print only the text content edits and not show the text formatting changes when using Print Comments Summary.

You can set ExecuteWithParams as default activity in the task flow then method activity to return total no of rows passing to Router activity if your method has value 0 then call Create insert operation else do directly to page.
Following idea could be your task flow
Execute With param (default) > SetCurrentRowWithKey > GetTotalNoOfRows (VOImpl Method)

1. If pageFlowScope outcome is 0 then call CreateInsert > MyPage
2. if pageFlowScope outcome > 0 then MyPage

You can incorporate video into Flash 8 and do extra animation with it.

Problem with insert edit on hdcam sr 5500

Hi,
We are having a hard time doing insert edit (video only) with our Kona 3 card. What it does is that it records a few black frames after the out point. In point is frame accurate. If we transfer the same edit via Avid (on the same computer, but using a separate boot drive) everything is fine. We would prefer being able to do it directly from Final Cut, though.
We use FCP 7.0, quicktime 7,6,2 MacPro 3ghz dual quad core Xeon, 4gb ram, Leopard 10.5.8
Any idea of a workaround?

Ah...I've been bitten by this. Make sure you are in EDITING mode, not MASTERING. Or, if you are in MASTERING, click on the MASTERING SETTINGS tab and make sure to UNCHECK the TRAILER black.

FCP X: Video / Audio Synch Function not working

Hello,
I am currently editing a project on FCP X (version 10.0.8) on a Macbook Pro (2012) with 8 GB RAM.
I have imported video shot on a Canon 7D, and I am using independently recorded WAV audio files that were captured on an independet dedicated audio recording unit.
I am attempting to synch the master WAV audio files with the 7D video footage, and up to this point every time I create a sych clip, the clip contains only the audio as recorded by the camera and not the audio as recorded by the seperate audio unit. I am selecting both clips, and then instructing program to synch the independently recorded WAV audio files with that of the camera.
Any thoughts as to why the FCP X synch function is not operating properly would greatly and very deeply appreciated!

Not sure what you're trying to do but it sounds like more than 7toX style translation can do. Any particular reason why you're doing part of the work in X if the main project is all in 7? To be honest- unless it's the main editor I'd recommend the whole movie stay in either X or 7 but not both. Bouncing between them has issues (as you've discovered).

Insert Edit

I know this is pretty basic, but I just turned to a Mac and Final Cut Express. I am editing a project and I am trying to insert video in front of another piece but it keeps moving everything down and I don't want it to slide down. How do I insert edit

That's what an insert edit does. It moves everything down in the timeline to make room for the clip. What do you want to happen? You can overwrite. That wipes out what's already in the timeline. Or you can overwrite to another track and that puts it on top of the other clip. I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do if you want to do an insert that doesn't move the rest of the clips in the timeline.

Editing functionality

I'm not sure if this question is going to make sense but I'll try.
Say I had a pic of a building with 2 windows, could I cut out one of the windows and place a video file within the jpeg file? I'm not sure if that gives you the intended visual.
I recently bought Wondershare Video Editor for Mac but maybe I need to buy another editing software?

Glad to be of help! I just had a quick look at the Wondershare web site. It appears that the Windows version has PIP, but not the Mac version. I can't comment on its capabilities as I've never tried it - but I doubt very much that "it had the functionality that supersedes iMovie". iMovie '11 is a very powerful application, with many functions not obvious to the newcomer. A quick look through the Help pages, and other tutorials will reveal its full capabilities.
Regarding split-screen, that is also a feature included in iMovie '11, although somewhat limited. It allows you to have two side-by-side videos playing at once. See the following iMovie Help topic -
