Cutover Migration from EX2010 to O365

Starting this weekend, we are going to be performing a cutover migration from Exchange 2010 to Office 365. To give an idea of the size of the current email system, we have around 90-100 users and a total of 400GB of data and approx. 2,000,000 items. Average
mailbox has 19,000 items at 4GB. The cutover migration will be done using an Outlook Anywhere endpoint. The internet connection from where the migration will take place is 20mbps download and 4mbps upload.
We were never expecting the migration to be quick, given the amount of data, but after some simulations and calculations we have found that, best case scenario, the initial synchronization phase will take 7 days.
Our major concern is use of upload bandwidth during the initial sync and how it will bog everything down from a user's perspective, not just regarding browsing performance but mainly because on the same internet connection as the Exchange they have a site to
site VPN with another branch. We were therefore thinking of using the migration batch's start and stop functions to control the migration to happen only during out-of-office hours. Naturally the migration will take much longer to complete overall but the top
management prefer this than having 7 days of nearly unusable network performance.
This raises three questions:
Is the start/stop approach to the initial synchronization phase a good idea?
This is a problem I'm sure most companies face when migrating to Office 365. What approach do companies normally take to reduce the effects on the production environment?
What would be the best approach in such a situation, more simultaneous mailbox transfers (e.g. 10 mailboxes) to speed up the sync but bogging down the network, or less simultaneous mailbox transfers (e.g. 1 or 2) which might slow down overall migration but
hopefully free up some upload bandwidth?

As per your description, I would suggest you to start from here :

This covers almost all the required aspects while need to do cutover migration from Exchange 2010 to Office 365.
You should note that a maximum of 2,000 mailboxes can be migrated to Office 365 by using a cutover Exchange migration.
You may give a short span of time to this another informative reference :

Also, Exchange server deployment assistant is your friend that is available from Microsoft team and provides step-wise assistance when performing cutover migration.
As an alternative, if you wish to accomplish this task automatically, you may also consider on this automated solution (http://www.exchangemigrationtool.com/)that could be a good approach for you to get
this job done without any downtime(that's the main concern of most of administrators).

  • Majority of mailboxes fail to migrate to Exchange Online, Cutover Migration from Exchange 2010

Hi, hoping someone with Office 365 migration skills might be able to help with this one:
I have about 90 mailboxes in a Cutover migration batch process which only 4 mailbox succeed.
    The rest fail with error:
MapiExceptionLogonFailed: Unable to make connection to the server. ‎(hr=0x80040111, ec=1010)‎
I've done a bunch of searches on this error and it looks to be a permissions issue. But comparing the successful mailboxes to the rest, I can't see where the issue lies.
The endpoint uses the domain\Administrator account which has Full Access to all the mailboxes and I have run the powershell command to grant Receive As to the mailbox database.
    Any ideas?
    The full error is:

    Update:
I managed to fix this by creating a new admin account in Active Directory, assigning it the Receive As permission to the datastore
    "Add-ADPermission -Identity "Mailbox Database 0383061665" -User "iif.admin" -ExtendedRights Receive-As"
Then restarted the Mailbox Assistant service (which could have also fixed it I guess, not sure).
Edited the endpoint in O365 to use the new account then reran batch process.
All accounts now appear to be syncing properly.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Cutover Migration to Exchange 2013 On-premises

I have two clients who will be merging their on-prem Exchange
organizations. Different forests.  I've done many cutover migrations to
Office 365 for other clients so I'm familiar with the process.  My
question is:  Is it possible to do an O365-style cutover migration (create migration endpoint, cutover batch, etc.) from
an on-prem Exchange 2010 server to an on-prem Exchange 2013 server using
    the same steps?
Thanks in advance for any input.
    Steve

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, the Cutover Migration is used for migration to Exchange online. There is no related document about
Cutover Migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013.
To perform Exchange 2010 corss-forest migration to Exchange 2013, you need to use Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) migrate user accounts.
Here is a related blog which may help you. (Even though this article is for Exchange 2010 corss-forest migration, it's also applies to cross-forest migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013.)

  • Migrating from Exchange 2010 to EX2013 cu3

I'm in the middle of a migration from EX2010 SP3 to EX2013 CU3.  Transfers were going real slow, so I disabled global chimney and RSS scaling to see if that would help.  Running W2K8 R2.
Mailbox migrations now fail with this error message:
Relinquishing job: The request has been temporarily postponed: Resource reservation has expired. --> Resource reservation has expired.
Has anyone seen this before?  Thanks

    Hi,
Please check your mailbox status and move request status. If the mailboxes are still in Exchange 2010, we can try remove the move request and create a new one in a free time to check whether the issue persists. Please make sure
Mailbox Replication Service (MRS) is enabled for moving mailbox.
If the issue persists, please collect more event logs for further analysis.

  • Migrating from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012R2 Standard with 365

Im looking to move SBS 2011 to Server 2012R2 standard and with a 365 migration as well.
    Im thinking
    BPA for AD (health check)
Add the Server2012R2 as a DC
    Ensure replication
    Move DHCP
    Change DNS
Now this is where I get lost, now Im lost to use either dirsync or add essentials service, I have gone for standard and 30 cals with the option  as I have 28 users and the essentials service would make everything quite nice for remote access and backups
etc....  however I don't know whether to just use dirsync with password replication instead ?
Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network and sync'ing people to the cloud ? So Should I use DirSync on a different server
instead to sync up to azure ?
Finally with 365 I have only ever done a migration involving an export of pst's from an exchange box and then on a new domain with new pc's and reimport the pst's on the user accounts in outlook.
However I have read when migrating to 365 was using exchange 2010 there was a application
to move everything across however you needed an ssl cert iirc ? so I dont know how it works now since the nice new dashboard upgrade (assuming the tool has been updated like dirsync)
along with the above how does AD now know where exahcnge if you use the migration app with an ssl cert and is it a case of still running the 365 config tool to configure each user to look at their mail in the
cloud ? Also is it a good idea to enable essentials from the start of the 2012r2 dc for replication top 365 or to use dirsync ?
then finally when replications is all good start transferring the FSMO roles over to the new DC and demote and remove the SBS server
I have seen (below) but i dont think it covers this scenario and I cant be the only person in this situation =\ ?

I’m a little confused with the description. Did you mean that set up DC (Windows Server 2012 Standard) and
then install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role? If so, when you migrate, please refer to the article:
Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience

    Hello Joshywahcho ,<o:p></o:p>
First Check  is the MRS proxy is enabled or not and restart the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service and
    IIS on Hybrid .<o:p></o:p>
As now Microsoft has change the procedure to roll back the mailbox from O365, please follow the below mention Step<o:p></o:p>
Moved the affected user's mailbox to the Hybrid Server from Office 365 <o:p></o:p>
Connect to Exchange Online using remote PowerShell<o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
    $Credentials = Get-Credential<o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
New-MoveRequest -identity <e-mail address of the affected user> -OutBound -RemoteTargetDatabase "Name of the Datbase" -RemoteHostName <Your Host Name> -RemoteCredential $Credentials -TargetDeliveryDomain <Your Target Delivery Domain><o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
Get-MoveRequest -Identity <e-mail address of the user> to check the status of mailbox move<o:p></o:p>
once the mailbox move from Office 365 to Hybrid Server was completed then initiated a Mailbox move from the Hybrid Server to On-premise server <o:p></o:p>
Mailbox was moved successfully from Hybrid Server to the On-premise server .<o:p></o:p>
checked in the On-premise server 2007 and the affected user's mailbox was showing there<o:p></o:p>

  • Dirsync after Cutover Migration

    Hi All,
I am trying to setup dirsync following a cutover migration.
There is lots of unclear and out of date information about in the forums regarding this.
So far we have done the cutover migration - sucked the email into 365 and repointed all the clients to 365.
I successfully uninstalled Exchange 2010 onsite.
    Everything is working OK.
We now want to use dirsync to sync the 365 passwords with the local AD.
I have installed the latest version of the ad sync tool and configured it.
I have locked down the sync to 1 OU to test to make sure I dont break any of the other users if there is a problem.
I have a test user in the OU which I am attempting to sync (this user was created / migrated using the cutover migration process).
I  get the following error "Unable to update this object because the following attributes associated with this object have values that may already be associated with another object in your local directory services: [ProxyAddresses <with the
email address of the object I am trying to sync>"
There was discussion of a process for doing this with Exchange 2007 that required a script to update the AD users prior to syncing - is this still required with Exchange 2010 ?
If there is a document that covers something I have to do prior to this process or should it just work ?
    Thanks.
    M.

OK for everyone else I found the issue I was facing. I had previously deployed dirsync prior to the cutover migration (we were going to do things a different way). We then had to disable dirsync and delete all the users prior to changing to a cutover migration
    - this left duplicates in the deleted users in 365.
I had to follow this http://365command.com/justins-tech-tip-of-the-week-purging-and-removing-deleted-users-and-mailboxes-from-office-365/ to permanently delete the users in the 'recycle bin'.
This then resolved my issue with dirsync.
    Hope this helps someone else.

migration it just hangs for a couple of minutes trying to authenticate, I assume to the rackspace server.
Maybe I dont have the right rackspace server name but I have tried rackspace.com, cp.rackspace.com, apps.rackspace.com and email.rackspace.com. My users use apps.rackspace.com to login to their email. I use cp.rackspace.com to get the control panel. I have
seen them called email.rackspace .com and I threw in rackspace.com for good measure. When I login at apps... I use
[email protected] as the login id. When I login to cp.... I use only rpierce.
I have tried many cominations of server addesses, login ids etc. and I always die in "Connecting and Authenticating to source server". Does anybody have any ideas here?

I realize this is a very old posting, but I just went through this migration process this weekend and wanted to share for future posterity.
So, if you want, you can use the Microsoft Exchange EAC Migration tool to migrate over your email from Rackspace. It worked fairly well - HOWEVER, it is only email and not your contacts or calendar, which for us was not good. If you still want to do this,
    here's how:
    1) Go to the EAC Migration.
    2) Add - Migrate to exchange online
    3) For pretty much any hosted exchange system, you're probably not going to be able to do nice migrations like Cutover. Instead, you're stuck with IMAP...which is also why you can only do your email and not calendar. Companies like Rackspace will not give
you enough access to do Cutover migrations.
    4) Upload your CSV file.
    5) For your IMAP server, type in your mail server. If you do not know it, you should be able to get it from Outlook. Go to your Account Settings. To get the proper server, you may need to go to "More Settings", Connection, Exchange Proxy Settings,
and copy the proxy server name. For our Rackspace server, it was mex07a.emailsrvr.com
    5) Name the migration and start it off.
Ok, so that does JUST email, but NOT calendar and contacts. We needed that. So, after a lot of hunting around and finding a couple of posts that helped, the only real option was migrationwiz.bittitan.com . It does cost about $11.99 an account, but it did
a good job. You can setup trials and run free migrations which migrate a few emails/calendar/contacts as a test.
When setting up the migration project, their system allows you to type in the source/destination servers, or they have a "I know my service provider" option. I clicked on that and was able to find the desired Rackspace server in the list.
Everything went real well, EXCEPT stupid me had done the IMAP migration and then the MigrationWiz. All emails wound up being duplicated. MigrationWiz keeps track of what it migrates and does not duplicate, but since I had all of the emails in the destination
already and then did it again, I duplicated everything.  I wound up having to switch to the "Classic" interface for MigrationWiz, selecting all accounts, clicking on Bulk Options > reset mailboxes, and reset the statistics and errors for all accounts.
Then I had to clear everyone's email accounts out of mail. Again, problem - DNS was already pointed to new server, so I literally had to go into everyone's account on OWA and delete off all emails that were before the DNS change.  UGH.  Then I went
back to MigrationWiz and started their migrations over.  So, much of that would not have been necessary if I didn't migrate with two different tools and if I had waited to switch DNS.

  • Cutover Migration Issue

    Hi ,
I have an issue with Cutover migration to office365.
    Exchange environment:
    3 Exchange 2003 Servers
    3 Exchange 2010 Servers.
    AD domain : abc.com
    Exchnage organization: abc.com
We have acquired two other companies, so we have added additional email addresses to mailboxes created in our Exchange with below domain names.
Test1.com and Test2.com ( I am not publishing the domain names here).
We connect to our mailbox using abc.com credentials, however primary SMTP address of the user alters between test1.com and test2.com.
    Now:
i have added necessary permissions on mailbox databases for migration user.
Tested the RPC Over HTTP and it is working fine.
Started the the migration batch and it provisioned all the user mailboxes, distribution groups , contacts etc.
But the problem is it is not moving any data from onpremise to cloud.
    Failing with error :
AutoDiscoverFailedConfigurationErrorException: AutoDiscover failed with a configuration error: The migration service failed to detect the migration endpoint using the Autodiscover service. Please enter the migration endpoint settings
or go back to the first step and retry using the Autodiscover service. Consider using the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer
I confirm that auto-discovery is working fine, but still the items are not moving.

Yes.. We used Exchange Remote Connectivity analyzer to Test Auto-discover.
This issue is now solved, with the help of Microsoft.

  • Migration from CA service desk to SCSM 2012 r2

Does any one have experience with migrating from CA Service Desk to SCSM 2012 R2?
How did you accomplish the migration

This is a common misconception about IT Service desk software, and a common reason that most helpdesk and service desk implementation fail miserably; that this something that you can just swap in and out like an email system. A service desk system isn't
just a file sharing site that you can forklift your data from and move on like before. Your service desk software is an
ERP for IT. Your Service Desk software is somewhere between a model of your IT department and a 5th column manager for your IT staff.
The typical methodology for doing this type of migration is to construct a straw model of your IT department, specifically your service book and work groups, and review your service book and incident handling procedures. once we have a solid understanding
of how your department actually runs at a conceptual and work item level, we can build a model of those work flows into service manager.
At that point, once we have a functional model of your department constructed in service manager, then we can start moving config item data. For 8 out of 10 implementations, this is better accomplished using a fresh discovery of config items from original
sources, which can then be reused to create an update methodology.
Provance's DMP (and to a lesser extent, the out of the box connectors, like the CSV connector) is a great tool for this, since it lets you build import templates that can be periodically run to update new data like purchases
for work items, a Knife edge cutover day is the simplest conversion, but certainly not the only option, that is, you decide January 15th is the day that the new system is available, and all work items go into the old system until January 14th,
and the old system will be locked for new requests on the 15th. any work in the old system is worked and closed using the usual process (even after the 15th) until the old system fades into obsolescence over the next 30 or 60 days.
You might notice that for medium enterprises (5,000 employees or so), this process typically takes several weeks of prep, and a couple of months of implementation, and it scales fairly linearly based on the size of your IT department. small departments
(somewhere below 20 analysts) can be done in a month or so, and very large IT groups, this can take a year or more.

  • Exchange Cutover Migration Mailbox limit

    Greetings,
    In the Microsoft documentation says:
You can migrate a maximum of 2,000 mailboxes from your on-premises Exchange organization to Exchange Online using a cutover migration. This migration method only moves mailboxes,
mail users, mail contacts, and mail-enabled groups.
But in the EAC migration console when I select cutover migration it says the limit is 1000 mailboxes
I need to validate if the limit is 2000 mailboxes or 1000, and also if I can migrate more than 1000 mailboxers without issues even when EAC says the maximum is 1000.
Thanks in advance for the help!

    Hi AC,
As the documents said, the limit now is 2,000 mailboxes.
I notice following information in the article
    http://community.office365.com/en-us/w/solutions/4294.aspx :
In Remote move migrations, you have to implement a hybrid deployment to migrate more than 1,000 Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2013 mailboxes to Exchange Online.
Please verify whether you are in the Remote move migrations.
Also suggest asking Office 365 forum for help so that we can get more professional suggestions. For your convenience:

  • IPrint migration from NW 6.5 to SLES fails

Using SCMT 1.1 to migrate from Netware 6.5 to SLES. Migration works
perfectly, except for iPrint. We're getting the error detailed in TID
10098587, but the "fix" it shows doesn't work. We just want to copy the
existing PAs to the new Print Manager running on Linux (same tree,
    different context).
    Anyone else seen this?
    Thanks.
    Mark Hepinstall, MCNE

That seems contrary to the documentation. I couldn't find anything on
moving a Print Manager from Netware to SLES. That was originally my
thought as well, as I've done lots of server-to-server NDPSM moves
without any problem, but there doesn't appear to be a documented method
for moving an NDPSM from Netware to SLES. Also, in this particular
case, the client is trying to build a "parallel" setup for testing
before they actually execute the final migration and cutover.
    Thanks.
