Cutting clips from a video.

I have a video that was taken which is roughly 45 minutes. I would like to cut this into clips. Unfortunately I haven't found how. I am sure its easy to do. But perhaps someone can lead me to the right direction?

Sounds like you need some basics. Open imovie. Go to the help menu at the top and select watch apple tutorials. They give a great start to how to import, cut, and export your video. That is what you need to do.
the apple store is also very helpful with getting people going. they have classes that help you in person for free.

how do i move clips from home video to roll?

Ahh, Ok. I actually had to go to Lynda.com to watch a training video of this highly bassackwards maneuver, but now I have it. In other words, while the intuitive thing is to make a new event to hold the clip you want and then open the old event and drag the clip into it's new event, the only way to accomplish this maneuver is to NOT create a new event, but rather, go to the clip AFTER the one you want to move, select it and then Right-Click on it and select SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP (or go to FILE>SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP). Then you wait a few seconds while the program thinks a bit (no feedback it is doing this - just a pause) and then it automatically creates a new event with the clip you wanted. Now just double-click the new event and name it something meaningful.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Batch export of multiple clips from one video in Premiere CS4

    Hello,
I'm really in a bind and hope you guys can help me out. I have about 30 hours of video in about 30 mpg files..1 hour in each video. I need to splice out small clips from each video..anywhere from 10 to 20 clips in each and send them to Media Encoder to store as video files I can then re-use. In CS3 I can do this manually one clip at a time ..set In point, Out point and then export. This however takes a very very long time....set the ins/outs, then export, then wait, then repeat..very tedious
In CS4 can i set multiple ins/outs for the entire video and then have premiere go to work and do a batch export? Or is there another way of doing this? I have about a week left to get this done and at a total of about 450 clips to export each 2-5 mins for encoding this will take forever...plase help!
    Stan

It wont do exazctly what you want but.... But the batch encoding should save you some time since you can continue to work while it encodes/exports.
Do you need to make more than one output type? Like DV, WMV, FLV... for each one? If so, I suggest this workflow:
    1. Open source file 1 in Source monitor set in and out, ctrl drag subclip to a folder in the project panel.
    2. Repeat step 1 for any other subclips needed from source clip 1
    3. When done with first source clip go into bin where you put your subclips click on them one at a time and do export/media to your lowest compressed need (like DV AVI for example); it will be added to AME queue
    4. Repeat step 3 for all subclips, then click start queue.
    5. While AME is exporting all the subclips for your first source clip, repeat steps 1-3 on source clip 2...
When you are all done; if you need to make multiple output types for each file; Do (IN AME) File>New>Watch Folder
Create a Watch folder for each output type you want. Then simply copy all the exported clips you want inot each of these folders and AME will process them all for you in batch.
It doesnt do exactly what you wished for; but should save you a few buckets of time.

  • HT2479 I'm trying to extract a photo clip from my video.  How do I do that?

I just took a video of my daughter's new wine and cheese shop.  She loved it and wanted a picture of her that is in the movie.  Can I extract a photo clip from the movie?  I can't figure out how to do it and would love some help.  Thanks.

Or just play back in full screen and pause the video on the section you want and take a screen shot(Shift CMD + 3).
Another thing you can do is Export using Quicktime from the Share menu and change the Export setting to Movie to Image Sequence. Make sure you export into a folder as you will get approx 30 images for every second of video you export. I would recommend creating a new project and just adding a couple seconds of the video clip around the spot that has the image you want then export Movie to Image Sequence (into a folder).

  • How do I keep the vocal soundtrack from on imported video while inserting clips from another video?

I'm new to iMovie10 and this is a first for me to ask a question on the community support site. Anyway, I have this video of a stationary shot of a demonstration with the presentor giving his vocal explanation of how to perform the task at hand. I also have a video of hand-held shots with close ups and different angles of the same presentation filmed simultaneously. How do I insert the clips from the hand-held video into the main video without losing the audio of the main video? Thanks ahead of time for any help.

First, go to iMovie/Preferences and make sure the Advanced Tools are enabled.
If so, you can use the Cutaway Feature.
Drag the second clip and drop it on the first clip at the frame where you want the second clip's video to start playing. A popup menu will appear. Choose Cutaway.
Here is a good Tutorial on the Cutaway Feature.

  • Twixtor  & premiere 4.0.1  - black video then cut clip from beginning

Revision FX say "Sorry about that, I did report it
Feel free to report that in point trims cause plugin to use the wrong frames in CS4, worked fine in CS3 "
    Whats wrong ?

    Hi Denis VID,
I did write this solution on one another topic at this forum.
Premiere Pro CS4 has a bug that cause "black, empty frame" results with time related plugins. You can try nesting the clip for handling this bug, till a fix will exist.
This bug is a result of CS4's way of serving frames to plug-ins, in my opinion. I hope a fix will come soon.
Right click to clip that you want to apply your effect at timeline. Choose "Nest" from right click menu. So you'll have a nested sequence of that clip. Now you can apply your effect ("twixtor" in this case). I think and I hope it will work fine...

  • How To Cut & Paste From Second Video?

I have two videos.  They're almost identical except for one scene.
I've been trying to copy that scene from the first video and paste it into the second.  It would replace the scene in there now exactly.  Both are the same length.
I haven't had any success.  Is this possible with iMovie?
    Thanks.

If the relevant scene is also still in an Event, you can drag it from that Event to the project. When you drop it onto the scene to be replaced, a pop-up menu will appear - choose Replace.
If you can't access the particular scene in an Event, then export the first video and re-import it to an Event. Then select the required scene (drag across the clip to highlight the segment with a yellow border) and drag it to the other project as described above.
To export the project and retain full quality, follow the steps I outlined in this discussion topic:

  • Cut audio from a video file and edit in an audio editor?

Using Pre 9 and a Nikon D7000 video file: Is it possible to cut the audio portion of a movie clip (where the audio was recorded in the camera and is part of the import), edit in an audio editor (I like Sony Sound Forge Studio), then paste it back into the clip?

I use Steve's method all of the time, and edit the Audio output in Adobe Audition. You will want to Export/Share to PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and keep that format both going and coming back into PrE. Remember that you will be working with an Audio file, that is the full (or almost) Duration of the Timeline. When you Import that edited Audio file, give the program a few moments to Conform that newly Imported PCM/WAV for editing. I suggest not touching the computer, until Conforming has completed 100%, and the little progress bar in the lower-right of the GUI has disappeared. If the Imported Audio file is short, and your computer is fast, you might not even see that progress bar, but the Conforming has taken place, just the same.
I like to keep the original Audio on its Audio Track(s), and just use Window>Audio Mixer to Mute that/those Track(s), leaving only my edited Audio on its own Track un-Muted. This is a "fail-safe," just in case I change my mind along the way, and wish to revert to the original Audio for some reason. It is much easier to Mute-Unmute, than to gather up all of that original Audio again.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • How do I create clips from my video.

I have a long video that I want to break up into smaller clips.  I'm a noob and could use a little help.

    so?
the more in detail you describe your problem, the better the answer ...
you told us, you want to 'break up' a clip in smaller segments ...
    • 'mark' (click and hold mouse button) the part in the Event window
    • drag to Project
that's what the videos and advices tell you - so, what part of this advice doesn't work for you?

I have a number of large video files that are far too long in playing length to post to you tube so I am looking for the easiest way to cut 10 minute clips from each video file so I can upload them onto You Tube. I don't want to have to shell out money for software so what would be the simple way of doing this.

  • Editing Clips from ITUNES

So i have a presentation in which I'd like to include video clips. I downloaded episodes of a TV show from ITUNES and downloaded Quicktime Pro. I was hoping to cut clips from the TV episodes and save them as a separate files so i have a few small files. I am able to cut the clips but then when i click on "save" or "save as" nothing happens. Is this happening because ITUNES files are "protected" (and what i want to do is impossible?) or am i just doing something wrong?
Many thanks to anyone that can answer
      Windows XP

Purchased iTunes files are protected. I believe you can share them to a limited number of other computers but not copy/paste parts into other movies.
You may want to visit the iTunes for Windows groups to obtain more information about the sharing of such files:

  • Still photos from a video to be used in another program

I am new to iMovie. Is there a way to take a still clip from a video clip and make it into a jpeg or other photo to be used outside of iMovie? If so, what does it get named, and where would I find it to access it from a photo program?

Choose JPEG, file name and file destination folder.

  • Imovie 11: When moving clips from event to project, the top of the video clip is cut off.

I'm working with a new project. When I add clips from an event to the project window, the top of the video clip is cut off.  Quite a bit of it is cut off.  It happens on every clip.  The aspect ratio is correct and I've set the video to fit in frame.  How can I fix this?  I would really appreciate any help.

You may have stabilization turned on in the project. On one of the clips, click on the small gear icon at the start of the clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that opens, uncheck the box "Smooth Clip Motion" against Stabilization. If this fixes it for you, do the same for the other clips.
Also, it's a good idea to turn off certain preferences in iMovie>Preferences (an iMovie menu item). In the Browser tab uncheck the boxes for both "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed" and "Apply rolling shutter correction for clips that have been analyzed". See this picture:
The stabilization process causes a zoomed in effect on the video, as it has to "average" the pixels in order to smooth any shaky motion. You therefore lose a certain amount of the picture, depending on the extent of stabilization applied. Here's what iMovie Help states (in part) about this process:
"iMovie stabilizes video by analyzing the camera motion in the video and then moving the picture the opposite way to steady it onscreen. In this process, iMovie zooms in on the picture slightly. The amount of unstable motion in the clip determines how much zooming is necessary.
Zooming in crops out some of the picture, but you can fine-tune the level of stabilization to strike the right balance between keeping the video steady and retaining as much of the picture as possible."

  • Why does Compressor take so long to export a 10 minute video clip from Final Cut Pro?

I've been trying export a 10 minute clip from Final Cut Pro. so it can be used with DVD Studio Pro and burned. However, the rendering process has taken 12 hours! The clip I'm exporting has minimal effects, no music, and is in 1080i 30fps. Does anyone know what's going on or what I can do to speed up the process?

First: How are you exporting? Are you using the Share feature or  Send to Compressor?
Second: You haven't said anything about your system configuration or really very much about your movie. What is its format… is it really 30fps or 29.97? Whatever it is, are the project settings identical to the clip properties, or were they changed?
