Cutting out part of a clip in the middle

Is it possible to snip a clip in 2 and then trim unwanted parts out of the middle and then rejoin? This is how I am used to working with audio in Cubase SX.
Or would you have to duplicate the clip and then trim from the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to accomplish this?
Never mind. I found out about the razor tool in Creative Cow, not in the first 10 tutorials I went through.

Glad that you found the Razor Tool. That, plus a Ripple Delete (to close up the gap), will be very useful.
With Track Targeting, and Multiple Track Targeting, you can also use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl-K. Just depends on how you like to work.

Best way to lengthen a clip in the middle of sequence?

Setup:
FCP 7 with a newb at the wheel.
I've got a sequence with about 30 clips in it.
Problem:
Let's say I want to lengthen the duration of clip #17 by a second or two on the timeline. The best way to to figure out how do this was a bit cumbersome. I had to:
1) Move clips 18 thru 30 further down the timeline.
2) Lengthen clip 17 to where I want it
3) Delete the gap between 17 and 18.
I've searched and searched for an easier way to do this but haven't had any luck. Unless I'm using them wrong, ripple, roll, and slip tools don't do it because they either affect the length of the adjacent clips or change the in point of my clip.
Question:
What's the best way to lengthen a clip in the middle of a sequence?

Select the cut between 17 and 18.
Press 'u' twice (Only the left side of the cut is selected that way.
Press '>' or SHIFT-'>' as many times as you like to ripple the clip to the length f your desire.
OR
Double click on this cut betweeen clip 17 and 18.
The trim window opens.
Click on the Left window of the Trim Window (note that only the left window will have a green line on top now).
Again use the '>' button. And again this will trim the shot. Only now you'll be able to see what the new outgoing frame is (left window).
Most important:
Do as Tom Wolsky says and read the manual about ripple and trimming and roll and slip and slide. That'll be very valuable tools for editing fast and easy.

Cut out parts of a file and process the copied information

Hello all,
I have a problem as described. There are files with clearly distinguishable start and end markers as well as some characters in-between that need to be replaced. Such files may have e.g. the following structure:
Start of file
... file content here ...
<Start marker>
... file content here ...
<Character_1 that needs to be replaced with another character>
... some more file content ...
<Character_N that needs to be replaced with another character>
... still more file content ...
<End marker>
... and even more irrelevant content ...
End of fileI need to copy the file content between <Start marker> and <End marker> thereby replacing encountered special <Characters> in-between. The so 'cut out' content where characters were replaced needs to be saved to a file or just available as file object for further processing.
I am wondering if there is a way to do the copying of content and substitution of characters simultaneously to speed up the whole process as the files may be quire large. Any suggestions with regard to the described task are most welcome. Thank you very much in advance!

- read char
- replace char if necessary
- store char
Repeat until you hit end marker
Whether that actually speeds it up needs to be proven, though. I'd guess char-wise reading slows things down.

Sound Cuts Out Half Way Through Clip

I'm importing an AVI file into iMovie HD to edit it. There is nothing wrong with the file itself, there's sound the whole way through, but when I import it into iMovie the sound cuts out at a certain part. I've tried uploading it multiple times and every time the sound cuts out at the same part of the clip. I can't figure out what's wrong.

AVI isn't a format. AVI is a container, just like MOV. These containers can contain video in any format (=codec) of the hundreds available. Which codec is YOUR video encoded with?

Cutting out images in indesign, clipping path problems

Hi,
I have been putting images of my drawings from photoshop onto indesign for my portfolio, after looking around the only way I can seem to find to cut them out is using clipping path/detect edges.
The problem I have is because they are scanned sketches this method produces really inacurate and shoddy results and no matter how much I play around with the threshold and tollerance this means I still have to mess around with the pen and arrow tool for ages on each image.
Is there a quicker solution to cutting them out like the magic wand or lasoo tool on indesign?
It has taken days now in in design , I have all the images already cut out from their original pages on photoshop but the white box always comes around again when I drag or place the images in indesign.
I have been shorcutting some pages and doing layout on photoshop and placing the image behind which works fine sometimes but is really inconviiant when I want to move the layout around text ot anything...... i have attatched some pictures to show you what I mean.

Cutting out part of a photo and reshaping

Dear illustartors,
this may be a photoshop or illustartor question, I'm not sure. Here's what I want to do:
take part of a photo and cut it out - the shape isn't regular, something of a rough rectangle
take the cut out shape and reshape it, I need to move two oof the corners in to form a rough trapezium
I want the contents of the cutout shape (part of a photo) to shrink appropriately within the reshaped object... Imagine the shape is an old door, The shape wouldn't exactly be a rectangle because it's a bit beaten up; having cut it out I want to make the new shape but still see the edges, coners and panels, he new shap will be the same hieght on the left-hand side but reduced on the right-hand side - as if creating perspective.
Is this possible somehow?

UPDATE: yes that's good. I created a "sunray" using a line which I transformed to have as many lines as the mesh I used (actualy it had half the number plus 1 for the lower half of the sunray, then repeated the operation fo an identical line on top of the first but wit the ange of transformation = to 360 - the angle of the first line's transformation) and made the line long enough to get the perspective right, this I then used as a guide to move the mesh lines. The only thing I would have liked is to a) lock the verticalsin the mesh so I didn't move them inadvertently and b) if I could have moved the beginning and end point of a mesh horizontal and said now redrawn the line between these two points it would have been quicker. (I was using illustrator)

How to cut out part of an image and replace with another?

ok, i'm a newbie to image editing, and i want to cut out a persons face in a picture and put in another face on the picture. i'm sure this is pretty simple, i just have no idea where to start. can someone point me in the right direction? thanks!

Aperture is not a pixel editor, which is what you need. Photoshop is the app used for this, but it's cost is several times that of AP! As suggested in the second post, look into Photoshop Elements, a slimmed-down and much cheaper version of Photoshop. [I don't use Elements, so if someone knows that it can't do area copies from one pic to another, please join the conversation!]
And get a good book on Photoshop or Elements, there's a huge learning curve involved. I'd suggest going to a book shop, pulling a few such books off the shelf and check their index for editing techniques. Sometimes you'll find one book that gives you the exact step-by-step instructions for doing what you want. Then there'll be others that don't get into the topic or do a poor job.

I have been watching a rental movie and the audio cut out half way through, tried restoring the apple TV now I've lost the rental.

I have just been watching (The Adjustment Bureau) a rental movie and about half way through the audio cut out, I tried rerunning the chapter but still the same problem so I tried the restoring function and now I have lost the 48 hrs viewing of the movie. So how do I get the movie back without paying for it again and is this problem likely to reoccoure and if so how do I rest without loosing the movie?

This must be a glitch in the movie file on the iTunes server because my husband and I just reached the same point in he film (The Adjustment Bureau) and no audio! Totally cuts out and doesn't come back in. We tried the same - turned off, signed out, and also couldn't see the rental in the menu... Sign out, sign back in and click 'Check for rentals' in the 'General' menu just under where you signed in.
It may come up with a negative 'no more rentals can be found' or similar but go back to the main screen and check anyway. It should be there.

How do I delete a clip from the middle of a scene

Trying to delete a clip from a scene in the middle of a movie.
The trim option only seems to let you keep what you want but won't delete what you don't want.

The choices you mention only appear when in the Event and perform what AppleMan has described. You need to do the edit in the Project. Following AppleMan's advice, you will see this pop-up menu:
The project simply references the video clips in the associated Event. Deleting the selection from the project will not remove the video from the Event, but will just extract that portion from the clip in the project, as AppleMan described.

Adding a Clip in the middle of the timeline

I know this is a dumb question, but I've been watching tutorials and reading about FCE; however, I cannot locate an explanation of how to insert a clip in the center of the timeline or a transition in the center of the timeline without messing everything else up.

I assume you want to insert a clip between 2 others?
Drag the clip to where the other 2 "join".
If you do it carefully, you will notice that the cursor arrow points right when you have it in the top half of the timeline and swivels to point down when you move it to the bottom half of the timeline.
To insert your new clip you must release it while the cursor is pointing right.
A bit more info:
When the arrow is pointing right, showing that you are about to insert the clip, the clip is displayed with a thick dark line around it.
If the arrow is pointing down, showing that it is going to over-write the underlying clip, the clip turns from blue to brown.

After latest update, I keep getting logged out of my email, even in the middle of reading emails!

Approximately two weeks ago, I installed an update to Firefox. Immediately after that, I keep getting signed out of my email, even while I'm in the middle of reading it or composing an email! It's very frustrating!

Check the Security panel of System Preferences and see if there's a select under the "General" tab of "Log out after xx minutes of inactivity". If that's not the case, launch the Console utility and see if there are any messages that might explain the log out.

Printed photos cut out part of the image!

Just got my Mac 3 months ago........I transferred photos from Nikon Transfer software to iphoto. When I finished editing photos in iphoto I sent them to a desktop folder then burned them onto a disc. When my customer tried to print them it cut some of the heads off of the subjects. I shot them in a very high resolution so that my client could get the best photo quality for extra large prints, if she desired.
Average size of photo is 3069 x 2337. Jpeg format
Please help, as I am new to mac and want to re-burn the photos so that they may be printed smaller without loss of parts of the actual image (like peoples heads).

Crop them to the ratio that your friend will be printing - 4:6, 5:7, 8:10 - what ever
Digital photos form point and shoot cameras typically are in a 4:3 ratio and from a DSLR in a 3:2 ratio - they are probably printing is a different ratio

TV shows cut out part way through...

I purchased TV shows...loaded them into my 80g IPOD...they play for about 8-10 minutes, then boot me out to the main menu. I also have a similar problem with music, where I select a song to play...the song comes up on the screen for about 5-10 seconds (without starting to play) then it goes back to the main menu. I haven't tried buying/playing any movies yet...but I have to imagine it would be the same. It doesn't always happen, but often enough that I'd say it's a frequent problem. The only way I have figured to temporarily "fix" it...is to reset the ipod by holding down the "menu" part of the wheel and the center button at the same time until the little apple appears. Then I can go back into the same TV show/song and it works fine. VERY frustrating & time consuming though! Any ideas/help?

What version of firmware does your iPod currently have?
