Cutting QT movie into smaller segments

I'm new at this so if this is a typical newbie question I ask your tolerence. I've looked through the archives about sub-segments but haven't found what I need. I'm trying to cut a QT movie file into smaller segments so I can rearrange the order of things. I'm unsure how this "make subsegment feature works. Do I have to make new In and Out points one at a time, then make each one a subsegment or do I make the primary sequence a subsegment then work on the subsegmented piece, placing new In and Out points in it?

That's what editing is all about...
Do you mean you're trying to edit? in FCP? or you want to cut up your QT files outside of FCP?
I think you might have to do a bit of reading about basic 3-point editing techniques.

  • How to split a movie into smaller segments before importing to iMovie 09?

I got software from Roxio allowing me to get VHS tapes to the computer in the form of .mov. It was supposed to convert it for use with iMovie but it didn't work. So I'm using MPEG Streamclip converting it to DV. But it takes too many GB's. I need to break the alaska.mov to several smaller parts. I know this is simple but can anyone help? Thanks.

thanks for your helpful suggestions. I opened the old VHS movie converted by Roxio VHS to DVD. It opened in Quicktime. I then trimmed it into more or less 4 equal parts, using the trim function in Quicktime. I then converted each part to DV using MPEG streaclip saving it to an external drive. I then used iMovie 09 to import it and create thumbnails. Now I'm ready to edit. I could have avoided all those steps by dragging it directly into Final Cut Express which I have, but this program is too complicated for me to learn.

  • Break up a movie into shorter segments

    Hi
I'm trying to upload a 4 min 18 sec movie to a site for a college portfolio
the file is about 120MB and the site only allows you to upload 20MB at a time, just need to know how to break up my completed movie into smaller segments without messing up the transitions or anything
    so I can upload?
    Thanks, any help is appreciated...
    Alison

One way is to do the following. Select your Project Name in the Project Source List.
Right-click (or control-click) on the Project Name. Select Duplicate. You should now have an exact replica of your project. Repeat this as many times as necessary.
Now, Take the first 40 seconds of your movie (or so) and delete the rest. Go to the 2nd Duplicate. Keep the 2nd 40 seconds and delete the rest. Go to 3rd Duplicate. Keep the 3rd 40 seconds and delete the rest. Continue until you are finished. Now Share the movies.

  • Splitting a large video file into smaller segments/clips using FCE

Is there a way to split a large FCE / iMovie Captured event into smaller segments/clips.
Am attempting to convert my home videos ( Analog: 8mm) into iMovie clips.
Used a ADS Pyro that converts my composite signal ( RCA: Yellow+Red/White) to a digital signal via Firewire using the iMovie capture. However, this creates a single 2 hour file that takes approx 26Gb because there is now DV information.
I would like to (a) Break this into smaller segments/clips then (b) Change the date on these.

Do you know if this will create a new file(s) ?

What I want to do is to break up my 2 hours video into smaller chunks then burn the good chunks as raw footage ( AVI/MOV) onto backup data DVDs. Then export all the chunks into compresssed files (MPEG-4?) and save these on another data DVD.
Avoid to compress. Save as quicktime movie.

Download MPEG Streamclip, which is free, from Squared 5.
Drag your long clip into MPEG Streamclip.
To split your video, move the playhead to your desired in point and type i. Then move the playhead to your desired out point and type o. Then File/Export to DV.

  • How do I cut a movie into numerous smaller videos?

I have a DVD/movie in iTunes that is simply a bunch of music videos. I want to divide this one DVD/movie into the 10 separate music videos it actually is. Can someone help me with this? I couldn't find any existing topics on it. Thanks!

Not sure if this will work on any sort of protected video file, but works on unprotected files (I just tried it on a home movie I have in iTunes). I use this method a lot of music, but hadn't thought to try it on a video until you posted. Anyway...
Select the video file and do a "Get Info". Under options you can set a start and stop time for the video. What you need to do is record all the start and stop times of each video. For each video you want to extract, set the start & stop times to be just that video. OK out of the Get Info box. Now right click on the video and pick the "Create iPod or iPhone Version". This will create a new COPY of the original file but it will ONLY be the part between the start and stop times you picked.
You would then have to go in and reset the start/stop times for each video and repeat. And at the end be sure to set the original video back to the full length by unchecking both the start & stop times.
Downside of this method is that you ARE creating version suitable for iPods and iPhones, so things like high definition movies may be downsized. You will have to try it and see.
    Good luck,

  • Split an AVI movie into several segments in PE 4

I am new to using PE and have an old version which I never used.   I have tried to do this with Roxio Creator 2009, Nero 9, and Studio 9 with no luck.
I captured a video from a Canon ZR 45.  I contains 2 actual sessions which I would like to make into 2 separate videos.   I can find no way to actually just split at the point I want and save the avi file into 2 separate files.   I also want to take one of the sessions and split it up into multiple sessions to load on facebook.   I have read some suggestions using PE 7, but I am not sure they work on PE 4 that I am using.
Here is basically what I want to do.
Split the origiona 12 GB avi capture file into 2 files.
Take the first session (23 minutes) and split that into smaller sessions (files) so I can do something different with each.
Any suggestions or recommendation for other software that can do this?
I do not want to get PE 8 unless I can get this to work...

Let's assume that you have done the Capture from your Canon and have the AVI's in both your Project Panel, and have placed those onto your Timeline. When you have edited out everything that you do not want, and have your Timeline exactly, as you wish, you need to Export/Share.
To do this segmentally, you need to use the WAB (Work Area Bar), placing it's In Point, where you wish your Exported movie to start, and its Out Point where you wish the movie to end. When you go to Export/Share, you will limit that Export to WAB only. Here's a look at the WAB:
For your multi-segment movie, you'll do the same, but the Duration of the WAB will just be smaller for each Export/Share.
Now, I do not know what the requirements of Facebook are, and there might be formats that would be required, that do not allow you to Export with the WAB. If this is the case, just Export/Share to DV-AVI as, say 4 individual files (w/ the WAB), and then Do 4 new Projects, using Get Media for each of your 4 AVI files, one at a time. Then you can Export/Share your entire Timeline to that necessary format, one at a time.
Good luck, and if any of this is not clear, just let us know,

  • How do I cut a quicktime movie into smaller pieces?

I have several downloaded clips that I want to work with in imovie. I have one in mpeg2 in particular. I have also exported it to a QT movie.
I have QT Pro, Mpg2 Component and Streamclip. I want to be able to work with smaller parts to avoid the non-destructive editing memory hog. Simple question, I hope.

My recommendation would be to open the file(s) in MPEG Streamclip, set approximate in/out points for each segment and convert each to DV/DVCPRO format. Clips can then be dropped/imported into iMovie and reassembled for final edits. (I assume there is audio you wish to preserver here.)

  • How to edit a large movie into smaller, separate movies?

.: Hello. This question is so basic I'm embarrassed to ask it, but I am stuck. I am a new user to iMovie 6, and bought and am reading David Pogue's iMovie 6 & iDVD The Missing Manual, but can't seem to find an answer to what must be the most basic editing task. I have a couple of 40-50 minute movie clips made with a Flip Ultra. I imported one into iMovie 6, and it took about 25 minutes to do so, and appears as a DV-NTSC clip. The movie is 42:21:10, and is of a concert. I want to extract the video of the performance of each individual song, and create a series of smaller movies, each one featuring one song.
I cannot for the life of me determine how to do this. I'm deep inside Chapter 5 of David's book, where he discusses trimming, cropping, splitting, etc., but I can't figure out how to save a cropped clip so that it can be made into a new movie. I am near tears at this point. This MUST be the easiest, simplest thing to do in iMovie, and I can't get past the starting gate.
If anyone can help me with some pointers and advice, I'll be very grateful.
    Thank you and kind regards.

Open a new movie project side by side with the initial one, and drag the cropped clip into it.

  • TS3276 I have a group of 114 members. is there a limit to the number of emails I can send from a group? If I choose this group it only seems to send to some of the people in the group. do I need to divide the group into smaller segments?

I have a group with114 member. Is there a limit to the number of members I can email at one time. do I need to make subgroups so everyone gets the information?

I'm not aware of any limitation in Mail, but many email providers have a limit on the number of addressees to help prevent spam. You might ask your email provider if they have a limit on how many addresses you can have in a single message.
    Regards.

i want to upload a 1hr movie to youtube. i cant seem to break up the movie into smaller segments for upload. ive tried chapters markers, cut and paste, chop(whatever). during this ordeal i have used up tons of disk space on files i cant find (but forget about that just help me break up this movie.

welcome tencupsdavid to the  iMovie boards..
obviously, you totally miss the basic functions of this edit app, e.g. chapter markers have for sure absolutely no effect on the length of a projectc nor on an export..
please use the Help feature of iMovie how to import, drag clips into timeline, how to edit those clips and how to export just selected clips o a project's timeline...
aside: this board is about version 5 of iMovie (HD= vers.5, iMovie6= vers. 6, iM08= version 7)... if you need addtional help, check which version is in use.. (=different versions/diff. help, advices...)

  • Cutting QuickTime movie clips

I would like to take old film clips and use them for GarageBand projects but I dont want to use the entire film because it is too long. What would be the best method to cut these films into smaller, more managable clips. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Use QuickTime Player Pro.
Create a "selection" using the letter i and o keys in the movie controller timeline.
    Edit menu "Copy".
Make a new player window (Command-n) and Edit menu "Paste".
Save As to make a new file.

  • Splitting a Partition into smaller Volumes

    Hi,
On an external drive I have 3 partitions. One of these is an empty 250gb partition. I'd like to split that into smaller 15gb sized partitions for some multiple install testing. In disk utility I have selected the partition and clicked the + sign to add a new one and so on until I had the rquired amount. I then selected new names and sizes (15gb) for each partition.
Firstly, it failed with this error "The chosen size is not valid for the chosen filesystem".
So, I decided to add one partition at a time. This worked. However, the 15gb partition is now only 9.46gb. A 5gb loss seems a bit excessive. Does this seem right?
    Thanks

Thanks Steve. I figured that was the case.  I must be doing something wrong (or my brain isn't working correctly today.) It seems that this should be a really easy thing to do - take one long segment, and break it into smaller segments. But I can't use anything in the clip menu, and the only way I figured out to save the individual clips as their own files is to delete everything else, and then save.  Clip #2, select clip, delete everything, save.  Seems kinda stupid to me. But, again I must be doing something wrong.

  • When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks...)

When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks... the first exported to iDVD ok, but the next one of 15 minutes balked for the same reason -- too long...)

    I wish I had a mac :-P
Sadly, this is Windows machine so I dont have a non-iOS version of iMovie.  I have 2 ideas left.  The first is xfering the project to my iPhone 4 and trying to export it there (if that works, awesome but geez apple the iPad 2 is way more powerful than the iphone 4.. youd think I wouldnt even have to attempt this).  The 2nd idea is to start at the end of my movie and delete clips and sounds backwards, trying to export each time to find whatever clip is causing the issue (when the movie was 5 minutes it mixed no probem, so I only need to go that far).
    Wish me luck?
Also, is anyone else besides me and the 5 dudes in the other threads having this issue??  Speak up, guys - Apple cant a fix a problem they dont know about.
