CVI 2009 Very slow installation of distribution kits

I'm having an issue with distribution kits built with CVI 2009 taking a long time to install on some PCs.  In the installer, the progress bars will both be completely full, with the top one displaying "Overall Progress" "Currently Installing [application name].  Part 1 of 1."  The bottom bar displays nothing.  During this time, there is usually a few instances of msiexec.exe sucking up considerable CPU time according to Task Manager, and the disk does not appear busy.  If I wait several minutes (sometimes 10 minutes or more), it will eventually move on, with the next step displaying "Validating Install..." on the bottom progress bar.  This only happens on some PCs, other ones install in a reasonable amount of time (less than a minute).  Once the installation is complete, everything appears to have worked and the installed software runs fine.  The only pattern I've noticed that the PCs that show this problem tend to be older models.  One is a P4 3.2Ghz desktop with 1.5GB of ram, and the other is a Core Duo (not sure about speed at the moment) Dell laptop with 2GB of ram.  Both are running Windows XP SP3.
Any insight into this would be appreciated, as some of the PCs that show this are ones used for testing software packages and often having things installed onto them.  Thanks.

Hi tstanley,
I was wondering what you were running distribution kits from - hard drive, CD, network or USB stick?

  • MacBook Pro 2009 very slow and extremely hot

My MacBook Pro 2009 is lately getting extremely hot and is very slow with frequent stalling. Does anyone have any idea?

You can first try to clean up all of the old system files and cache files left behind. Also, try to debloat it. I generally use an app called Detox My Mac which works really well. My mac was doing the same thing and it cleaned it up and i've had no problems since then. I made an article on it if you want to read it and get a download link. Here it is: http://www.softwarestogo.com/speed-up-your-mac-with-detox-my-mac/

  • Macbook air mid 2009 very slow

    Hello,
    I recently bought a Macbook Aid mid 2009 with 2 GB ram, 120GB Sata and 1.86GHZ Core2Duo.
I'm running on OS X 10.9.3 since I bought it.
The laptop is loading very slow many times and I noticed 'kerner_task' taking alot of CPU and RAM.
I'm wondering if my laptop is not good enough for OS X 10.9.3 (this is my first Mac).
Ia there anything I can do?
    Thank you

Yours is the first computer I've heard about on these forums that is attempting to run Mavericks with only 2GB of RAM.
Indeed that is acceptable per the Mavericks requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
... but as you may know, Apple has not sold computers with as little as 2GB RAM for quite a while.
I suggest therefore you make sure you remove any applications that may be overtaxing your machine.  Examples are browsers other than Safari, Mac cleaning products (such as Mac Keeper), or any other non-Apple app that has some startup process running (such as Outlook).

  • MBP (mid-2009) freezing, slow installations and file transfer

I bought the latest MacBook Pro model and installed Snow Leopard on a cleanly formatted hard drive. I have tried migrating via ethernet and FireWire from my iMac, but the migrations failed either due to freezing (via FireWire after roughly 24 hours of file transfer) or by an error message (ethernet with Migration Assistant).
Only through a Time Machine backup was I able to transfer my account files to the MBP, which again totaled at over 20 hours of transferring. The system was a mess, clogged constantly by freezing and spinning beach balls of death for durations lasting around 10-20 seconds during which music would clip after 5-10 seconds of everything not responding, this being accentuated especially during installations. I decided to format and try anew.
Now I've formatted the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and will transfer my files manually onto a clean account. Installations take a long time although SL installation is within 30 minutes, iLife took 1.5 hours to install 5 GB. During the installation Safari stopped responding, as did the entire system, and the spinning beach ball would keep spinning. Watching a 480p trailer in Quicktime made the entire computer freeze up (no video/audio) for 10 seconds halfway. Transferring 136 GB (my Music folder) will take around 15 hours according to the estimate after 10 minutes of transferring.
I've sold my iMac now and all I have are the files on my external hard drive. I want to get them onto my MBP ASAP but the slowness is preventing me from doing what needs to be done and it's very frustrating. When I try to boot into Hardware Testing by holding D down the computer doesn't do it no matter what (Application DVD in or not, plugged into power or not). I've tried resetting PRAM but I get the same inaction.
    Any ideas?
Edit: I've done Disk Utility to no avail, it finds nothing wrong.

Installed, still getting freezes with spinning beach balls. Transfer says it would take 1 hour opposed to that 15 hours, but it stops transferring after X amount of gigabytes (from 0.5 to 5), not do anything for a while and then continue, stretching the estimate to over 2 hours after some time. I don't know if this is just with the hard drive.
The freeze-ups are frustrating as **** and make for a very poor experience. Any ideas to get to the bottom of this? I still haven't been able to boot into the Hardware Test no matter how much I try.

  • Very slow installation (nearly 3 hours!)

    Hi,
    I just successfully (I think) updated a 2003 imac G4 from 10.3.9 to 10.5, then in turn 10.5.3.
Everything seems to be ok so far but the installation took nearly 3 hours to run on the disc, this can't be normal can it? It took over an hour to even check the disc.
It was again slow when I updated to 10.5.3 via software update, though nowhere nearly as bad. And all restarts are slow at the moment.
It's currently running a spotlight index which will be running for about 3 hours.
*Any idea why it was so slow?* Should I be worried or am I just suffering from Leopard Paranoia?
    Cheers
    Scott

My G5 iMac took about 2 hours to install 10.5 from 10.4.11 and probably a little under a hour for the combo update from 10.5 to 10.5.3. Did the same routine on my son's iBook and it took a long time, but we didn't time it.
It "seems" to run applications / web surf faster than Tiger, but I added RAM at the same time so don't know if Leopard, or the RAM, is the help.

  • MacPro 13in Mid 2009 VERY Slow "Kernel_Task" 500+ MB memory

I have loved my MacPro for years, however, after upgrading to Yosemite the performance is horrible. Can anyone help me understand what I can do to improve the performance?  Safari takes forever to connect, and I often just get the lovely color wheel.
I have checked my Internet and it is working great on other items.  The only issue is this MacPro.  Kernel_Task seems to be eating a ton of memory at times when I am having the most issues, but I am not even sure that that is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do I create CVI 2010 distribution kits silent installation

I need to build CVI/Labwindows distribution kits that will install silently.  Options that would be helpful would be things line 'run silent', 'create log file', 'redirect destination target',  etc.   Is this possible?

This KB article is targeted toward installers for NI products, but also applies to distributions built with NI Development Environments.

  • Error During Installation of a Distribution Kit

While the distribution kit that I have developed will install successfully on Win XP machines,  the kit installer produces the same error message on Win 7-32x machines.  The installer 's error message, occuring the beginning of the load process, is that it "cannot find the file specified", yet it does not display the file's name - space is blank.   Furthemore, as I attempt to install older version distribution kits that were formerly successful, I get the same installation error message on  WIn 7 machines.   I would appreciate any clues.  Are there any event logs that are produced during kit installation that will help identifiy this missing specified file?
The distribution kit was generated with CVI 2009 using a Win 7 -32 bit machine.
    Thanks,

Adding more mystery to the distribution kit error discussed above.  I have found that the kit installs successfully on Win 7 x64 machines as well as WinXp x32  machines.  However, the installation error message still exists on Win 7 x32 machines.  On one of these Win 7 x32 machines the error message infers that there is a .dll file  that cannot be found, with no mention or hint as to the file's name.   Again, any tips would be appreciated.

  • Distribution Kit and Installation Question

I have an app that I built with LabWindows/CVI 2009.  I also built a distribution kit for it.
How can I indicate in my distribution kit that I want to be able to install the same version or an earlier version over an existing version?  My customers in the field may need to "repair" a corrupt file by reinstalling a version "over itself".
    Thank you.

I would not recommend the "side-by-side" option in this case.
I think that the simplest solution is to tell them to uninstall and then reinstall in the rare cases where a corrupt file needs to be fixed, but that is probably how the issue is addressed now.
Based on my experiences here  (last half of that thread was hijacked for a separate topic) I doubt you will be able to change a setting to do a "repair" installation, but NI staff should be able to provide a solid answer.

This has just now happened. CVI 7.1.1 and versions newer than 8.0.1 (i.e. 8.1.1+) work.
    Any help would be appreciated.
/* Nothing past this point should fail if the code is working as intended */
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It turns out there are a couple different problems that come up in CVI 8.0 distribution builds when you have CVI 2009 or newer installed:
ActiveX Container Support won't be included if you're installing the run-time engine in the application directory, or if you're not including everything under the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine grouping. In either of those cases, the ActiveX Container merge module will need to be used, and CVI 8.0 won't be able to find it.
The Instrument Driver Run-Time merge module (instrsup.msm) and Mesa merge module (NIMesaDLL.msm) cannot be relocated to the application directory (i.e. the option on the Advanced tab I mentioned in the previous post). This will result in the distribution build failing with the error you reported.
To solve the first issue, I recommend making a copy of C:\Program Files\Common Files\Merge Modules\ActiveX_Container.msm, and renaming the copy with a space instead of an underscore ("ActiveX Container.msm").
The second issue does not have an easy work-around. If acceptible for your use case, I would suggest either making the run-time installation global (by unchecking the Advanced tab option), or removing the CVI run-time engine from your distribution build. In the latter case, your application would rely on a global CVI run-time engine already being installed.
If neither of those will work for you, I can get you copies of the pre-2009 instrsup.msm and NIMesaDLL.msm that you would have to manually swap in and out with the versions in your Common Files\Merge Modules directory whenever you needed to build this distribution in CVI 8.0.
I'm sorry about these issues. Let me know if you need those older modules.

The first two things I recommend is boot from your installer dvd or external bootable drive and repair/verify your drives with Disk Utility (not repair permissions) and do a smc and pram reset.
Also make sure you have at least 20GB to 25GB free space on your boot volume for OS operations.

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
    thanks for your responce

  • Early 2009 iMac is running very slow

My early 2009 is running very slow.  Takes about a minute to open Safari upon start-up....even opening up folders from finder take a long time.  Get the spinning beachball often.  Opening websites takes 30-40 seconds sometimes....they do open eventually.  I have run permissions repair from Disk Utility. Our iPad has no such problems.  iMac is hardwired, iPad is wireless.  I ran a report with "EtreCheck" but don't really understand what it is telling me.  I have about 100GB of space left out of 300GB.  Will attach "EtreCheck" report if I can figure out how!
Thanks so much for any help!  Only recent changes I have made is upgrading iPhone and updating Charter Cable Security Suite.

I am having the same issue. I am going through some of the things listed above. When doing the Go To Folder portion of the Adware tutorial none of those files existed on my iMac. I will do the rest but was wondering if you can see any clear problems from my EtreCheck report. Thanks!

  • My 2009 Macbook Pro is running very slow

After installing Maverick on my 2009 Macbrook Pro initially the result was very slow, practically unresponsive and unusable. After investigating many reports of similar problems I have not found anything to rectify the problem. Have downloaded and reinstalled Maverick - have tried many suggestions but whilst currently marginally usable I am getting to the end of my patience and am very disapponted that it would not seem that Apple have sorted this problem out with an answer or even an apology. Please, please Apple sort yourseves out - you will cause yourselves iripairable damage if you continue to ignore the many problems that are being reported - this is my question to you - when and if will you sort this out please?

Thank you for your reply and help - information below:-
